Take That’s team talk Odyssey Collection Take That’s Odyssey is anything but your bog standard Greatest Hits album. Instead, it’s an ambitious attempt to reinvent the format, via a non-stop mix of rebooted career highlights, seamlessly mixed by Stuart Price and featuring interview snippets from throughout their career. “That day seems to be over,” says the band’s Gary Barlow. “With everything being available now, the Greatest Hits is already online. And we have such a supportive audience they’ve got everything, in fact they’ve probably got it twice. So just sticking a Greatest Hits out felt really uninspiring.” Instead, Polydor and the band got Stuart Price to reinvigorate the catalogue in a unique way. “It just felt right creatively,” says David Joseph, chairman & CEO of Universal Music UK. “A new take on songs that could have a new meaning today. It was an idea that they then creatively enjoyed and that’s why it worked. We were also mindful that they’d been on a run of very successful studio albums and it just felt like the right moment to have a respectful look at the past. It’s a terrific record.” Neil Rodford, CEO of Take That’s management company YM&U Group, credits Joseph and the band with the vision for what could become a new model for compilations if it becomes successful. “It will be interesting to see the reaction that we get from the audience,” says Rodford. “But that was the vision: to try and augment the back catalogue without messing too much with the original songs. The quality of the songs is what will differentiate them from everybody else.” With sales available with a gig ticket bundle, Polydor co-president Tom March says the album already has tens of thousands of pre-orders and predicts it will be one of the few records this year to debut with 100,000+ sales. He also believes it might help the band crack streaming, with most of their albums to date heavily physical. “The campaign will be full of moments of nostalgia for their fans but will also give them something brand new to love,” says March. “We’re expecting to sell huge amounts of physical records, whilst also reinvigorating their catalogue on streaming services and have fantastic plans in place with all the partners.” The only question that remains is, where can the band go after 30 years at the top? “Their music is going to be part of people’s lives forever,” declares Joseph. “Take That occupy a special place in UK music history. As long as the songs keep coming, there are many chapters left in this story.”

Definitely didn’t sound like they were miming, having listened to OOOH quite a few times now. That’s probably the usual social media crowd who like to cause something from nothing.

I think 3 years too, but I don’t see them returning as a 3. I think they’ll wait and say to Jason, this is our last studio album - come back for it and then that’s it

I think a lot will depend on the success of this album. If it sells poorly, then that could be the end, but if it sells well, then it could reinvigorate them and the label (similar to the ultimate collection). Good to see Out of Our Heads is still hovering in the top 75 on iTunes at least

I agree somewhat with milly in that this album is a nice treat. We get 3 new songs, and reworks of classics (including some interesting duets). The originals will always remain the best, but this will hopefully add a new, fresh layer onto tracks that are 20+ years old. I think we will see both a Gary and Mark album the year after next, although I doubt either will trouble the charts. Gary could make top 10 potentially. Although, perhaps he’ll re-release 12 months as he did with Open Road. I’m just going to enjoy this album, promo and tour as much as I can. I hope there will be future material, I think there will be, but it could be 5 years away. Most likely with Robbie and Jason returning in some capacity. Maybe a Vegas 3 month residency is on hold until Howard’s baby gets a bit older. Would probably make sense to do that after this tour.

Robbie and Ayda are the only reason I’m sitting through it. I always knew Rob would be great, but I’m really pleasantly surprised at how well Ayda is doing. Good to see

It’s reassuring to hear that he understands the challenge now though, rather than not (as some of us felt at times!)

It’s a shame that the single didn’t chart, but then when you consider they released it on a Thursday and did no promo or physical options, it wasn’t a surprise. Robbie had a similar struggle with his first single from HES

There’s a very interesting section about the way the charts have changed and how Gary went in to tell the label and management that they had to change their expectations of the band, considering streaming

I’m struck by that too! Even during recent times and tours he’s had difficulties. I’m about half way through the book now!

Just going to repost this here, where it should have been :lol: An extract from ‘A Better Me’: We knew Jason wasn’t going to stick around forever, but when we started thinking about our next album [after Circus], he was already on his way out of the back door. I know people would give their left arm to do what we do. But at times I felt like Jay’d give his right arm not to. In that respect he’s like Dawn: hates the publicity. There was only one thing that would keep Jason for one more record: Robbie. Jason would stick around if the old Take That were together again. And wasn’t that where all this was headed since the comeback? Rob. ‘Yeah, but where is he?’ Rob still felt so far out of reach. I knew Jay would stay if Rob came back. He and Rob are great mates by now. Fact: if we weren’t five, we were three, no two ways about it. I had to get Rob back.

I quite like it! Definitely a Strictly performance incoming. Why would they release this on a Thursday though? First day sales will be completely wiped off after today.
