  1. And outside the top 40, I think it was 'Rule the World' spent 4 consecutive weeks at no.83. Unfortunately due to Chart Stats demise I can't check this.
  2. Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side. Though charting for obvious reasons and not the weather.
  3. For the past 50 years around 2m appears to have been the limit for a 'normal' single. Only one (Mull of Kintyre) has ever done it in it's regular chart run. A tiny handful of others have crept over the mark in the download era. 'Relax', 'Rivers of Babylon' and possibly 'You're the one that I want', not sure about that last one. So it was always an exceptionally rare ocurrence. Just because 'Blurred Lines' won't do it doesn't mean it's never going to happen. I still think BL will ultimately sell 1.8m though. And anyhow, you can't judge where the singles market is going by what happens in one particular year. In the mid 2000s you could easily have said that a non charity/talent show winner would never sell 1m again.
  4. 'Arguably'. Meaning it's debatable. Some people might think so, others not. But she's certainly up there. Not that there is any quantifiable way of measuring 'fame'. And that's the reason it will stay 'arguably'.
  5. Diana was the most famous person on the planet at the time, arguably the most famous person ever. Nobody has anything like that level of fame today. Perhaps the only way it could ever be beaten is by a charity record in response to some unimaginable disaster in this country ocurring, tens of thousands or more killed. But beyond a terrorist attack, it's difficult to see that happening.
  6. Nice one, 'Don't you Worry Child' now on 900k! A million in 18m perhaps?

Seems to be. Judy Boucher spent 4 weeks at no.2, so anything but a 'non number 2'. And I would urge anybody who has never heard 'O Superman' to check it out and promise to listen to it all the way through, it's very long. One of the most bizzare tracks ever to make the charts, never mind no.2. It most definately is *not* radio friendly!
  8. Pumped full of what? Drugs? Steroids? Sunny D?
  9. Indeed. Where has this suddenly popped up from? I was never aware that there were any record charts at all prior to November 1952, 'missing' or otherwise. Sheet music charts yes, but this chart is for 78s. It struck me too that it begins in 1940, the same year as Billboard and indeed conveniently stops just before the 'real' chart begins.
  10. 76. Someone like You - Adele This was down in the 200s yesterday, it hasn't been reduced to 59p. I assume it's been used on some talent show (original choice, huh?) Should give it a nice little nudge towards 1.5m. Edit: Just checked the old iTunes thread. X-Factor.

The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles would disagree with you though and that's really where my definition of 'hit' comes from. Obviously a track that spends just one week at no.75 is only a minor hit, but a hit nonetheless. If you had an act that had a no.1 hit and a no.75 and nothing else then I wouldn't call them a one hit wonder. And this really has happened. 1982 Eurovision winner Nicole made no.1 with 'A Little Peace' and no.75 with the follow up 'Give me More Time'.

I though Psy would be a *one* hit wonder until he had a second hit..... It will be a case of diminishing returns though, the next single will probably chart but just top 75 I think. Depends what you actually term a 'hit' though. Top 200? top 100? top 75? For me that's top 75. I don't really consider something peaking at no.186 to be a hit.
  14. Yes, it's done very well considering it's initial 5-9 drop. Stabilising nicely (rebounding really) and a new overall peak position isn't completely out of the question if it keeps this up.

Don't be so silly. They've had a number one single. They've had a track that has sold going on 1.5m copies. How is that not achieving anything? If you don't like them fine but that comment is as idiotic as any of the Gaga loon stuff that you have been complaining about.

That was kind of my point!

    So could 'Moves LIke Jagger'........
  18. Blurred Lines will be close to 1.3m next week. There is no way it will sell a mere 100k more in the remainder of the year. I still think it will finish around 1.6m by year end.
  19. Do you like buttertarts?
  20. But that is probably as much to do with a fall in Ellie's sales as an increase in Gaga's. Most of the tracks above have risen too in that time though not as much as 'Applause' so I'd say the video was leading to a modest increase in sales, nothing more.
  21. But only 42 weeks top 50 (If I've counted correctly from Polyhex) which was the chart size when 'My Way' was around, which really puts it in perspective what an incredible run it had. Edit: Of course CC would have had 9 more weeks top 50 had it not been deleted due to the crazy chart rules of the time.

They're obviously just shoving each new million seller in at the bottom as they occur. 'Blurred Lines' should be well into the top 100 by now.
  23. The Fray's 'How to Save a Life' runs it close for that particular acolade but I think we have a winner...... Must be unusual though to really like a band but seriously hate their best selling track, their signature tune, the one song everybody knows them by.
  24. I imagine you're right. It just *seems* to have been around forever. Of course not, I like this one. Surely everybody wants tracks they like to sell as well as possible but not want the same for those they don't like?
  25. Not *again*. Why can't this detestable thing just go away? At least this will nudge it up towards the million mark a little more. 0/10 for originality.
