  1. I would have thought in the early chart it would be more likely as covers/standards were a big thing. Can't immediately recall an exact match to your situation although 'The Boy From New York City' originally made no.8 in the US for the Ad Libs in 1965 (but not charted in the UK). However, a cover by The Darts made no.2 in the UK 1978 and Manhattan Transfer made no.7 in the US in 1981.
  2. Despite all of the horsecrap we have about his honours list (and won't Liz Truss get her resignation list despite screwing up the country during the few hours she was at the helm) what is pleasing is that so called drip drip of resignations of Tory MPs supposedly happening over the weekend stopped after Nadine Dorries and that other one I can't even remember. I mean the runctions would have been fun but please no more of this ghastly thing.
  3. I absolutely love 'Hometown Glory' with that haunting piano but not a big Adele fan. It's like that song is from a different artist - it's more early Fiona Applesque/Tori I would say.
  4. Thank God that they didn't have streaming back then as a lot of my favourite artists (the likes of Tori Amos, Bjork, PJ Harvey etc) would have hardly have any top 40 hits at all! Plus the likes of Savage Garden ('To The Moon and Back' excepted) having MORE weeks in the charts.... :puke2: Guess it depends if you are talking about the period where streaming had just started being counted and sales were still relevant or now where they really aren't apart from the odd charity/novelty single.
  5. Yep really thought Kate would go top 10 - and with her position revealed all of my top 12 artists gone. Top 3 albums for her are The Dreaming, The Red Shoes and The Kick Inside. Favourite songs - Leave it Open, Wuthering Heights (new vocal), Moments of Pleasure Although RUTH is an absolute classic, I never was fully on board with the Stranger Things resurgence, partly because I never watched it and partly I kind of wished another song got a revival as that had already had its time in the sun (and the Olympic renaissance). But still very pleased for her (and to get top 3 in the USA after never going above no.30 during her whole career meant a grave injustice was partially redeemed).
  6. Oh I thought it would be Sonia, she hasn't been mentioned yet and no way that Buzzjack would ignore such a musical Eurovision queen and late 80s colossus. :cheeseblock:
  7. It's more her music I find very meh and unmemorable - especially after 'Music Box'. She was great until then.
  8. Well he's completely gone as MP now let alone PM! What a disastrous road that this man put our country down and the utter waste of finance for a Brexit project he didn't believe in that could have been used for about a million better things. The sad thing is that our institutions and services will continue to crumble and our most vulnerable people will suffer and die as a result. I personally doubt he'll do a comeback in a meaningful way. He's not got the strength of character (albeit in a horrific evil version) or popularity that Trump has. Plus his support for Ukraine means that he won't be considered a Trump ally. Just like most things about the little Britain he made happen, we are increasingly irrelevant on the world stage. He'll make money on the speakers' circuit for God known reasons but, in a way, that doesn't matter. To most people he'll become synonymous with failure and deceit.

Ewww at Jacob Rees Mogg Knighted and Andrea Jenkyns and Priti Patel becoming dames. At least nothing for Dorries and his wandering hands father!
  10. Not really - UK rap seems to be doing on average worse this year compared to previous. Just the biggest two UK artists are collaborating and another one is teaming up with Drake.
  11. I've been reading that title in that way all week but didn't want to say. Glad not just me! :kink:
  12. Where do you even start re: Starmer? Broke all of his pledges when he ran for Labour leadership Worrying authoritarian control over the whole Labour party re: selections - always shutting out the left Was pro-Remain now pledging never to bring Britain back to the EU, not even the Single Market despite public opinion and economy crying out for it Patronising, charisma free style Won't offer the radical change needed in these worrying times That said, I get 100% what you say about not wanting Tories in so if he has to be PM then so be it (because it will be him or Sunak, unless the latter is dumped by his party). The current thinking of progressives is to have a Tory out vote which will mean voting Lib Dem in the South/West and Labour everywhere else (there will be websites with much more detailed instructions on what to vote in what area). I would hope Lib Dems get lots of seats so they have influence over Starmer because they are better on most policies nowadays.

Shame in a way as she was a great MP but I hear that she doesn't feel that being an MP helps with the Climate Emergency and takes away from focussing on that. In a way, I understand you only have to watch what happens in Parliament to see how useless it is with its adversarial, unfair system.
  14. Lana is an artist who although I'm a massive fan of the moody arty genre she encapsulates and loved some of her singles 'West Coast' and 'Video Games' are amazing, never really warmed to her as a person. Something about her image put me off and sometimes she can be a bit funny with her views - that said probably not good to judge her on things like that too much. It's actually Buzzjack that has made me think she has to be great as she gets so many rave reviews. I did start listening to both 'UltraViolet' and 'Norman f***ing Rockwell!' and they sound great - should try more of them.
  15. Next single, title track from 'I Inside the Old I Dying' out MZDfM6bhKMc A lot better than 'A Child's Question, August' IMO, quite beautiful, even if not very commercial again. And there's a UK/European tour coming this Autumn. I've only ever seen her once during the Stories era so will def go and see her as she's generally rated excellent live! Tickets on general sale on the 16th June.

Talking of Right Said Fred, Richard Fairbrass has gone down the route of his Twitter hacked when a tweet appeared on his account comparing coronavirus vaccine to the Holocaust. I'm not entirely blaming them as they probably didn't research their twattiness but wish neither Taylor Swift or Drake didn't give them credits and royalties for interpolating 'I'm Too Sexy' on, dreadful by their standards, tracks!

I don't remember them making snide comments about the songs the charts at all during the 90s. It was much more serious - that all changed in the mid 00s when the charts were dumbed down, DJs could give opinions about records and not announcing records properly or pretending to care about the charts became a thing! Although of course Jameela Jamil's opinions were pure ART.
  18. Awww - shame. Did think she'd be slightly higher (or maybe wishful thinking). For someone so young, she is scarily talented. I thought her image was a bit too much for WWAFWDWG (although musically pretty faultless) so glad she softened it slightly for 'Happier than Ever' and let the music speak. Mind you, think the backlashes she gets from her overdemanding fans (over not very much at all) is a bit unnecessary as if she's not allowed to grow as a person. I would say that 'Everything I Wanted' is the most uncommercial long lasting top 10 hit of all time (I'm not including tracks that went 7-25 say). It spent 10 non consecutive weeks in the top 10 and the subject matter and tone of it just isn't that kind of record. Genuinely love most of her songs so no particular favourites.

Radio 1 never skipped 'The Millenium Prayer' in the chart countdown (although probably never played the track outside of the show). They played ALL top 40 songs from 1992 until the days of JK and Joel (correct me if I'm wrong) apart for the very rare occasions when a record was too controversial (I think Smash 'I Want To Kill Somebody' met that criteria) or I think they skipped any party songs after the Queen Mother's death.
  20. For ages I thought that it peaked at no.6 but realised recently that belonged to the rather forgotten 'Your Love is King' 'Paradise' is my favourite Sade song.
  21. I love 'La Luna' ,'Circle in the Sand', 'Leave a Light On','California' and 'Heaven is a Place on Earth' from Belinda. Her success was so different each side of the pond. The GoGos and 'Mad About You' were big in her home country but flopped here. For 'Heaven on Earth' album equally big in both US and UK then her US success withered but remained successful in UK for few more albums.
  22. Loved 'Starlight' with that chillout compilation style acoustic cover of 'Fly me to the Room' which starts off really quietly and builds during Dave's rap and they dovetail nicely. Hope his new one as good!
  23. Yay, a decent climb for Tori! :D Even though there's no question that Tori did not maintain the unbelievable quality of her early career - I would put Earthquakes, Pink (on balance my favourite), Pele (although controversially I think the second half meanders a bit), Choirgirl and Scarlet in the top tier category, all of her albums have at least a few good tracks. I do think Night of Hunters and Native Invaders are almost as strong albums- 'Fearlessness', 'Shattering Sea', 'Reindeer King', 'Climb', 'Mary's eyes' are all late highlights. I put her top as she's such a nice friendly person and always thought unfairly treated by the sexist music press esp in the UK who dismissed her with lazy Kate Bush comparisons, when apart from a trapped-in-a-box album image they are NOTHING alike. Live she is a legend and always gives her best (even if her voice isn't on peak form), takes time to meet her fans and varies the setlist within a tour (which many artists never do) so no two nights are the same. Even though she played them hundreds of times I still got a chill up my spine when I heard 'Silent All These Years' or 'Precious Things' a couple of months back at the Royal Albert Hall!
  24. I'm guessing that the producer wants more familiar tracks so people who don't care it's the charts but want to listen on a Friday afternoon post work have familiar songs to enjoy. It's almost like they DON'T want too much new/unknown tracks as if they're scared that it will put listeners off - which is entirely the opposite of what this form and chart enthusiasts want. Very commercial radio-esque but explains some of the choices they make.
  25. Lots of interesting/new(ish) stuff in this bit of the chart, makes it an entertaining listen!
