Estimated ACR status updates 2024
Yay for Kanye going to ACR - really not liking him having hits based on his persona. But so hope that Djo avoids it as seems too early- it's absolutely stunning!

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
The Theme from MASH becoming a hit so long after it first aired seems really RANDOM - guess it's one of those first Radio DJ campaigns. The title and subject of the song is certainly one that would not fly nowadays (well in the sense of getting airplay) as the perception of suicide has changed so much. Weird track tbh - not bad though. Reaching a peak position of #16 and just has to be mentioned (let's face it virtually all of her early singles are legendary) is the first single from Kate Bush's third album 'Never For Ever'. 'Breathing' was her attempt at producing a Pink Floyd style epic and has the heavy subject matter of a new born baby in a nuclear fall out/post apocalyptic world who also is addicted to nicotine from her mother. With a very memorable video too - brave choice for lead single but that's always been Kate. VzlofSthVwc

Could you be... the most beautiful #1 in the world?
There's no absolute classics in the list but several goodies. I actually am more of a fan of Ed Sheeran than most here but 'Beautiful People' is one of the worst no.1 songs ever. Something about it really annoys the hell out of me.

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
Peaking this week at no.31 was the debut top 40 hit for one of the classic alternative/goth groups of all time. This is actually my favourite Cure single - so haunting and mysterious but with THAT amazing riff. And we see Robert Smith before he applied tonnes of make up and ruffed up his hair! :o xik-y0xlpZ0

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
Well the top 10 certainly isn't stale as after a week with 5 newies we get one with 4, and an all male top 10 to boot. Not really blown away by any of these new ones. The Beat and Jimmy Ruffin are fine but always found 'She's Out of My Life' a really boring Michael Jackson song. The Narada song isn't my genre either so can't really persevere with that one.

That Johnny Logan track is abysmal- 'Hold Me Now' despite being very cheesy was a lot better. When I first heard 'No Doubt About It' would never have thought it wasHot Chocolate, especially the verse. Very diverse band! Only hearing 'My Perfect Cousin' for first time. What a riff!

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
This thread is very educational - did know the Sky track 'Toccata' from a Spotify hits of 1980 playlist but had never heard of the band before so no idea the band had a no.1 album (plus had 3 other top ten albums). I do like 'Toccata' and can see myself checking more of their stuff out. I do miss the times when we had classical music charting (it only does very rarely now for charity/novelty releases now). They'll be a few more in the next couple of years. 'Check out the Groove' is very pleasant although not exactly my kind of thing, and probably wouldn't distinguish it from the other late 70s/early 80s soul/disco tracks.

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
Love both her albums equally (or maybe 'Happier than Ever' a tiny bit more) but also her non album singles - 'No Time To Die', 'Everything I Wanted' and 'What I Was Made For'. She's incredible, both as an artist in her own right but also because she's so commercially successful with very adventurous music despite not really being a media personality (although not a complete recluse) Very excited about this new album.

Although looks like he's only apologising for dissing Kendrick, not for the track's transphobic content https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/04/06/rapp...c-lyrics-on-pi/

Awww I like 'Coming Up' with that quirky, high pitched vocals. They used a live version for the US market though with more standard vocals (and that did better even going to no.1 there). 'Geno' is pretty good fun. 'Call Me' is a fine track but not as good as 'Atomic' (but nothing really is tbh) 'Silver Dream Machine' is a catchy little song which never hear nowadays. Think would work better with a different vocalist mind (sorry David Essex!)

When non-single is your favourite song from any singer/group
Coldplay - Amsterdam (rarely played live sadly, unless the band appear in the city itself which us touching) Kate Bush - Leave it Open (just, there's an extra layer of strangeness in this track which just doesn't exist elsewhere) Moby - My Weakness (soundtrack to too many magical moments) Lots of my favourite artists couldn't pick a "best song" though including Bjork, PJ Harvey and Pink Floyd as they're more an overall thing.

Quite like 'Night Boat to Cairo' - being largely instrumental it's very different to their other hits. Decent atmosphere.

NewEra - Birds In The Sky
Song I'd ought to hate but embarrassingly quite enjoy. Cheesy as hell, mind.

The Tory fibs and fabrishications thread, Mk III
Although it's commonplace to send nude pictures on these apps, most people aren't MPs for God's sake. Doesn't he have any brains or was he hi when he did it? Plus, sending out colleagues numbers too?

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
Haven't had time to do many replies to this excellent thread but gave to say that I adore 'Dance Yourself Dizzy' - absolutely burst of joy and so so catchy. Didn't really like the Yomanda 'Synth and Strings' track from 1998 which sampled it mind. UB40 first top 10 hit and what a couple of corkers. Prefer 'King' ever do slightly although know 'Food for Thought' got more airplay.

The Middle East Today
Well, the tragic thing is the USA are still selling billions of dollars of weaponry to Israel, despite criticising them. It's like telling an arsonist off for burning down buildings but quietly slipping them matches and lighter fluid the next day. Biden, especially, seems to have no real interest in stopping the conflict despite his protestations. Scumbag (and I don't use that lightly and have previously praised his record overall).

The UK and transphobia
And she's been splashed on the front page of the Daily Heil approvingly as a hero. So depressing for trans people.

'Games without Frontiers' was epic indeed. Def in my top 5 of the year and that's not even including the fact it's got the divine Kate Bush on vocals.

Streaming Services Beyoncé Discussion
Yes, plus 'Eyes Closed' the lead from Subtract was produced by Max Martin! It had a sad topic but that isn't a bar to commercial success - see P Diddy/George Michael/Elton John etc...

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
I don't think Blondie are overrated or anything but I merely like than truly love any of their songs for some reason. However, 'Atomic' is by far an exception. Truly amazing masterpiece and must have sounded so futuristic and exciting back in 1980 - the US only had it only peaking at 39. Make it make sense!

'Captain Beaky' is definitely one of the most unusual top 10 hits ever. Maybe Baz Luhrmann's 'Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreem)' is the most similar. Do like the brass bits though. 'And the Beat Goes On' is a track thought would be covered many times but according to Polyhex it hasn't been a hit. Was heavily sampled by Will Smith in 'Miami' 'I hear you now' is atmospheric and mesmerising. Love these early electronic hits so so much.

Well like many cases when comparing UK and US charts I think we got it right with 'Pina Colada' (or even better if flopped completely) Didn't know it but it's awful on first play. :puke2: Great having the non top 10 tracks too - great stuff both Gezza and TheSnake!

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
I absolutely love Boomtown Rats breakthrough in 1978 'Like Clockwork' and,of course, the legendary 'I Don't Like Mondays'. This track isn't quite as good as those two but still a corker.

The BMRB Years- Top 10 sales
Best new song musically is definitely The Special's 'Too Much Too Young' (and wow at how fast it got to no.1) BUT the lyrics are incredibly misogynistic with the singer blaming an ex (presumably) for having a child instead of being with him with lyrics such as 'Haven't you heard of contraception' and 'Try wearing a cap'. Slightly shocking The Joe Jackson track is pleasant enough but don't quite get the hype. Kenny Rogers track is boring but not as offended as others here are. Don't think I can be bothered to listen to the lyrics closely of this one.

Music Video Relevance
Talking of Chainsmokers, their collaboration with Coldplay 'Something Just Like This' (which is Coldplay's biggest hit of all time on Spotify) never had an official video either.
