Britain's Sonay Kartal suffered a first-round defeat to Caroline Garcia at the Cincinnati Open. The 23-year-old was beaten 7-5 4-6 3-6 by her French opponent, who won the 2022 tournament. Garcia, the former world number four, will now face Karolina Muchova after the 31-year-old's first victory since 19 March, having announced in May, external she would retire later this year. Kartal's loss followed first-round exits for fellow Britons Katie Boulter and Jacob Fearnley. Boulter, 29, was beaten 6-0 7-5 by Serbia's Olga Danilovic, who will now face Emma Raducanu - who recently dethroned Boulter as British women's number one - in the second round. Elsewhere, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams went down to world number 42 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The 45-year-old American received a wild card entry to Cincinnati after reaching the second round of the Citi Open in Washington last month, but was beaten 6-4 6-4 by her Spanish opponent.

Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (4.00) favourite Gstaad has been declared a non-runner for Saturday's Group 1 at the Curragh, which has led to his Aidan O'Brien-trained stablemate True Love being cut to 1-5 for the first domestic Group 1 of the season for juveniles. The Coventry Stakes winner was off colour after his final workout on Friday, and O'Brien warned he was unlikely to contest the Phoenix.
  12. West Ham have signed goalkeeper Mads Hermansen from Leicester City for £18m. The Dane played a key role in Leicester's promotion from the Championship in 2023/24 and then featured 27 times in the Premier League last term.
  13. Xavi Simons is wanted by Chelsea - and the player wants to come to Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old could well make that switch before the window closes - although it will take some movement on his valuation. Leipzig's valuation is around £60m. Chelsea's is nearer £50m.
  14. Manchester United have signed RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko for £73.7m. The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with Man Utd set to pay an initial £66.26m (€76.5m) with £7.36m (€8.5m) in performance-related add-ons for the Slovenia international.
