Newcastle now have an agreement in principle to sign Malick Thiaw. The two clubs are finalising details of transfer which will cost Newcastle in the region of £35m. The hope is the German international can travel to Newcastle on Sunday to undergo a medical.

Sunderland are in talks with Getafe for centre-back Omar Alderete. The fee under discussion for the 28-year-old is around £10.4m (€12m) and Alderete is open to the move. Alderete, a left-footed centre-back, has three years left on his contract with the Spanish club.

Britain's Sonay Kartal suffered a first-round defeat to Caroline Garcia at the Cincinnati Open. The 23-year-old was beaten 7-5 4-6 3-6 by her French opponent, who won the 2022 tournament.
