  1. Several ex-Essex players were victims of "racist abuse and discriminatory treatment" during their time at the club, a report has concluded.

An investigation was launched by the county in December 2021 following a series of allegations by Jahid Ahmed, Maurice Chambers and Zoheb Sharif.

No players have been named in the report by Katharine Newton KC.

Chairman Anu Mohindru said "fundamental errors" had been made in the past which did not reflect "the Essex of today".

  2. Tight end Hunter Henry scored two touchdowns as the New England Patriots ended a five-game losing streak with victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Patriots raced into a 21-3 lead in the second quarter with Ezekiel Elliott scoring a touchdown before Henry's double for the visitors.

The Steelers rallied with 15 unanswered points but ran out of steam as they lost 21-18.

    "It feels good," Henry said.

"We started fast, put some points on the board and played from ahead, which is what we've been wanting to do. It's been a long year, it's been a grind. But winning always feels good, and is always fun."

  3. Australia batter David Warner has played down criticism from former team-mate Mitchell Johnson as he prepares to end his Test career.

The 37-year-old will retire from Tests after the series against Pakistan, which starts on 14 December in Perth.

Johnson questioned whether Warner deserves a "hero's send-off" after his central role in the 2018 'sandpapergate' ball-tampering scandal.

"Everyone is entitled to an opinion," Warner said.

"It would not be a summer of cricket without a headline. But moving forward, we are looking to a nice Test over in the west."

  4. Former world number one Naomi Osaka has set her sights on the 2024 Paris Olympics as she prepares to return to action at the Brisbane International.

The 26-year-old, who gave birth to her first child in July, has not played competitively since September 2022.

The Brisbane International runs between 31 December and 7 January.

"I definitely want to win more Grand Slams and I guess put in more time in the French Open and Wimbledon, and play the Paris Olympics," Osaka said.

"I want to be someone that understands the game a lot more. In the first chapter of my tennis I kind of got away with just being myself and playing with my instincts."

  5. LeBron James scored 30 points as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the New Orleans Pelicans 133-89 to reach the final of the NBA's In-Season Tournament.

James, who will turn 39 on 30 December, also had eight assists and five rebounds in under 23 minutes on court.

The Lakers will face the Indiana Pacers in Saturday's title game after they beat the Milwaukee Bucks 128-119 in Thursday's other semi-final.

  6. Manu Tuilagi has got a "few more years in him", says head coach Alex Sanderson as Sale Sharks prepare for their opening Investec Champions Cup match.

The England centre has been passed fit to face Stade Francais on Sunday and is now fully recovered after breaking a hand during the Rugby World Cup.

Tuilagi, 32, is aiming to secure another one-year contract extension.

  7. Defenceman Mike Caruso says "a lot of courage" was needed for the Nottingham Panthers to return to the ice following the death of team-mate Adam Johnson.

The 29-year-old died after his neck was cut by a skate playing against Sheffield Steelers in October.

Nottingham did not play a competitive game for a month after the tragedy, and have won one of three games since then.

"Anyone that tells you they aren't scared after witnessing something like that is lying," Caruso said.

"It been a bit of a tough process to get confidence back on the ice, going into those certain situations in the corner or with body contact on the line.

"There is no blueprint for something like this. First and foremost it was about getting us back together in the same room and having fun again and getting over that initial hump of getting back on the ice and not not being scared, basically.

"It's the best thing for us to to get back to work and try find the passion again with playing the sport that we love."

  8. Emma Lamb has withdrawn from England's squad for the one-off Test match against India with a back injury.

Opening batter Lamb, 25, has returned to the UK to see a spinal surgeon.

Batter Maia Bouchier and spinner Kirstie Gordon have been called up to the squad for the four-day Test that starts in Mumbai on 14 December.

Bouchier is uncapped in Test cricket, while Gordon played one match against Australia in 2019 but has not represented England since.

Bouchier, 25, is part of Heather Knight's squad for the three-match T20 series which precedes the Test, but did not feature in England's opening 38-run win.

  9. England and Bristol prop Ellis Genge is set to miss a number of weeks because of a hamstring injury.

The 28-year-old picked up the injury in training but a Bears statement said he was expected to return "ahead of England's 2024 Six Nations campaign".

He has scored tries in the last two Premiership outings for Bristol since returning from the World Cup.

Genge, who has won 58 England caps, also captained his country for the first time earlier this year.

  10. Great Britain's Tabby Stoecker has won a Skeleton World Cup gold medal on just her second start.

The 23-year-old former gymnast and acrobat headed a 31-strong field in La Plagne, France, to secure victory.

She clocked a combined time of two minutes 5.13 seconds to beat current World Cup champion Tina Hermann and Olympic champion Hannah Neise.

"It's an amazing feeling. I can't stop smiling. I can't quite believe it, to be honest," said the Londoner.

It is Great Britain's first women's Skeleton World Cup gold since Laura Deas won in Altenberg eight years ago.

  11. Mercedes are considering all options after Formula 1's governing body the FIA launched a compliance inquiry into their team principal Toto Wolff.

The FIA on Thursday ended a conflict-of-interest inquiry into Wolff and wife Susie just two days after it began.

Mercedes issued a statement from Wolff on Friday saying the company was "in active legal exchange with the FIA" .

It said Mercedes "reserved all legal rights" and wanted "full transparency about what took place and why".

  12. Blackpool boss Neil Critchley has branded the Football Association "incompetent" after his team's FA Cup second-round tie against Forest Green Rovers was postponed at short notice.

Forest Green fielded an ineligible player in their first-round win over Scarborough Athletic.

They now have to replay the game against Scarborough on Tuesday.

Critchley told BBC Radio Lancashire that, in his opinion, the FA had shown the club a lack of respect.

After a 1-1 draw, Forest Green beat Scarborough 5-2 in a first-round replay on 14 November, seemingly setting up a match against Blackpool on 2 December.

That was called off, though, and Critchley said: "We feel really aggrieved by it all. It was 4 November the first game when apparently the ineligible player played.

  13. Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister's injury "doesn't look good", said Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Argentina international, 24, suffered a cut knee early on in the 2-0 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday.

He carried on playing but was substituted after 57 minutes and later had his wound stitched up.

"Macca doesn't look good, so we have to see day by day," said Klopp ahead of Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace (12:30 GMT).

  14. Tackling above the armpit will be outlawed at all levels of rugby league in England from 2025 to reduce the risk of head contact.

The current laws allow tackles from shoulder height.

The change will come into effect at grassroots, academy and reserve levels from the 2024 season and then elite rugby the year after.

  15. Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has apologised for referencing the 9/11 hijackers in a team meeting in 2019.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the al-Qaeda attacks on 11 September, 2001 in the United States.

McDermott, 49, made the comments, which were first reported on Thursday, when talking about the importance of good communication within a team.

He said he "regretted and apologised" for his words at the time and would "do the same with the team today".

"Not only was 9/11 a horrific event in our country's history, but a day I lost a good family friend," McDermott added.

  18. Ospreys full-back Max Nagy is facing an extended period out after having surgery on a dislocated ankle.

Nagy, 27, sustained the injury during last Saturday's 18-13 United Rugby Championship defeat at Benetton.

Four minutes after scoring a try, he was carried off on a stretcher after an awkward fall going for a high ball.

"Max has an operation this afternoon, which is really sad because he's been one of our form players of the year," said Ospreys head coach Toby Booth.

"It's a dislocated ankle so until you open that up and see what it is… there's no bone injury as far as we can see, it's a ligament job.

  19. Palace v Everton is very uninspiring. No Gillingham v Sheff Utd, which shows how being a Premier League club doesn't automatically give a club the required status when looking for that sort of cup tie.
  20. Huntingdon's Peterborough Chase card on Sunday came through its inspection on Thursday afternoon but officials at the Cambridgeshire course will check conditions again on Friday morning.

The ground is soft and the track is raceable ahead of the Peterborough Chase, worth £75,000 in prize-money and the feature Grade 2 on a seven-race card, but with the river levels remaining high and heavy rain forecast for Thursday afternoon and evening, a second inspection has been called for 7.30am on Friday.

Only 1.6mm of rain had fallen as of 1.37pm on Thursday, but the track could be hit by a further 9-10mm before Friday morning.

Huntingdon's predicament could influence the decision of Alan King regarding Edwardstone, who is entered in the Peterborough and has been declared in the Tingle Creek at Sandown on Saturday.
