2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
I have seen this fairly often, the main reason I haven't been putting so much stock in shy Trumps or Wisconsin's fundamentals is that there's generally no reason to believe that polling misses are consistent from cycle to cycle, as polling companies should tend to update their methodologies based on their previous misses. My main approach to polls is that you just have to believe the averages and take those as the baseline rather than look for how much they'll get it wrong by, because it could genuinely be in either direction and though perceived wisdom (especially with 2016 and 2020, which is 2 data points, not enough for us to be positive on trend) is for it to be wrong in the favour of conservatives, there's been plenty of times where it's being wrong in favour of liberals. Also Wisconsin is the second most likely state after Minnesota to benefit from Walz being on the ticket, minor but it adds to my image of its fundamentals holding enough. Now yes, the gut feeling that I share is that it'll be behind Michigan and indeed scary and possibly too close to call, but that isn't necessarily going to play out in reality.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
No, they're not irrelevant. A D+3 national environment, which according to primary results is roughly what we're in (and the polls show even better but I'm still conservative on that), tends to translate to a Harris victory in the swing states as while there are individual variations in each state, determining whether they're on an individual rightward or leftward shift outside of what the polls tell us is political astrology; a broad national trend will in the majority of cases result in that playing out for Harris to get enough electoral votes. It's a simple representation of a broader point that Harris is winning in the swing state polls too and is, while not decisively, ahead of Trump enough that at this picture we can have her as a slight, slight favourite for polling day. She only needs WI, MI and PA, in the first two she's the clear favourite, in PA it's starting to look promising, NC (with the implosion of Robinson's race) and NV look very possible too, slightly further away in GA and AZ as of this moment but previous statewide races in both of those have consistently narrowly gone blue so they're far from lost - though of course on the other hand NC is similarly tight but has often gone red. Second debate would be great but I'm not expecting it.

Oh that's great Ghost still stays in, a fantastic/wild top 40 hit. Billie dominance of this year is quite something, not noticed 3 from a single artist in the top 5 since Gaga dominated 2009 back in the day (though it's probably happened elsewhere and I forgot about it).

Nightwish - Yesterwynde
These songs are going to need a few listens to bed in, definitely the two I'd heard before are among the best, and while I was a little lukewarm on 'Perfume' before it's really hitting me now, but 'An Ocean Of Strange Islands' is definitely a new epic from them and 'Hiraeth' has a fantastic build. And 'The Weave'!! Critic reviews are incredibly good too which is something I never really expect for this metal niche. With most of these songs being over 5 minutes it's not exactly an easy entrance to the band but this is definitely better than HUMAN :||: NATURE and could in time challenge to be the best Floor album, Endless Forms is really good but those songs have the benefit of nearly a decade of familiarity right now. I'm really pleasantly surprised.

The future of flexible working
My new job has a fair bit of working from home, which I do like, if I'm not required to be face-to-face then no point me hogging up the road to go into an office (and my team would likely not be there). That said, I always like being able to go in and meet people in the office when I can, it's good for significant new stages of projects, after which the main work is probably better done at home - though as I'm new here that's something that may change as I get more used to the work environment. I feel for all the people in education in this thread (which was me until relatively recently), I recall seeing some story about teachers working from home for non-classroom hours (and I don't mean the work that many teachers do out of hours at home) which would seem to make sense, but that would probably require more investment in education. As ever.

Mango's Chart Quiz: SONG PICTIONARY: THE RESULTS
I liked the 'aha' moments I had when looking over this one, like with #8, not really seeing much in it and then suddenly coming up with 'Sixpence' from seeing the coins, and it is six of them too. Inventive quiz for things like that. forgot Prof Green existed for a moment I must admit.

The Official Labour Calmer Steering Thread (mk III)
Lot of noticing things and white hot fury by the media these last few weeks. Basically not a moment of rest given to feed in the idea to the public that it was a mistake to vote in Labour and ensure their preferred government re-enters at the next election. I see their f***ing game. In a way I'm pleased that the excesses of the Labour right in some way aren't getting a free ride but this government has been generally quite good so far, and a good indicator of that is they aren't doing any of the nonsense of putting out media lines, then backtracking for short-term popularity and long-term disaster, something the government of the last Conservative term did continuously. Long-term thinking is far better for the country.

BuzzJack's Ultimate TV Show: VOTING
No actually. The main reason is I wanted to play the game first (especially as it came to PC not long after the show aired) as if I know an adaptation of a well-regarded narrative video game or visual novel exists before watching the TV show then I tend to hold to the maxim that the interactive experience is generally better based on the intense feelings I experienced with those I've played in the past; and for the same reason I haven't touched the latest Fallout show. That said my games longlist is gigantic and shows little sign of depleting especially with narrative games so I may eventually just decide to do the TV show route for The Last Of Us, I'm sure it's a great way to experience it regardless. I'll have to look at a few on your list in general, there's a bunch there I know I need to get to.

BuzzJack's Ultimate TV Show: VOTING
1. Breaking Bad - pure cinema that happens to be in TV format, perfect length, rewatchable, multiple greatest ever episodes, some of the most compelling character moments you've ever seen. 2. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - the greatest sci-fi allegorical show tackling foreign policy drama with episodes that were prescient of modern politics, and a hugely likeable cast of characters and secondary cast. 3. The Wire - when I watched this a few years ago I was enthralled from one season to the next, a ruthless show with incredible social commentary. 4. The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya - still something that's left a huge impact on me, a genius show that now looks like it was made on a shoestring but very deliberately so, perfectly captures the spirit of the 00s with its animation and its... loose approach to plot and sane show ordering. 5. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - The audacity of Jojo's really pushes it above the rest of my 10/10s for anime, that and the volume I've loved from it, so many differently well-constructed fights and narratives. 6. Steins;Gate - Everything good about anime coupled with nothing bad about anime, time travel story extraordinaire and easily watchable in one season (we don't talk about Steins;Gate 0) 7. The Sopranos - Tony Soprano is one of the defining literary characters of modern times. 8. Succession - some of the best TV moments of the decade so far have come from this show. Underrated. 9. The West Wing - yes it's very liberal (in the derogatory too smug for its own good sense) but it's fantastic comfort television lounging in the thrill of politics while benefiting from not being a comedy. 10. The Expanse - the second greatest sci-fi allegorical show tackling foreign policy drama, very much recommend if you like hard sci-fi and the idea of Cold Wars between Earth and Mars with the asteroid belt acting as the third world. 11. Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War - Perhaps the peak of anime comedy, in that you let two goofballs who don't want to admit they're into each other into a student council room and let sparks and banter fly. Which works... SO WELL. 12. Higurashi: When They Cry - incredible story done nearly as well in anime format as it is in novel format. Nearly as well. Definitely the best way to experience Higu if you're never going to spend 50 hours reading. 13. Fate/Zero - the single greatest battle royale show ever, all made even better through the tangible feeling of doom that hangs over the show from knowledge you gain experiencing its companion story Fate/Stay Night (which is good, just not quite top 50 good). 14. Lost - a show that happened upon one of the most inventive and effective TV hour telling formats ever and holds up for it, particularly early on. 15. Game Of Thrones - mostly great etc 16. Death Note - a classic of cat-and-mouse crime thrillers 17. Assassination Classroom - love letter to education done through ridiculous comedy 18. Star Trek: The Next Generation - so so many brilliant episodes that have passed into TV canon and led fantastically by Patrick Stewart throughout. 19. Kaiji - 2 seasons of this was not nearly enough, addictive high-stakes show about a gambler Squid Game copied its homework 20. Parks And Recreation - best american sitcom through being low-stakes and positive (about its characters) while biting (in its satire of small-town America) 21. Fringe - science + sci-fi together, I haven't seen X-Files but I imagine with how much I love this, this'd do similarly. 22. Peaky Blinders - is this my highest British show? oop. This is how we need to do prestige TV though. 23. Neon Genesis Evangelion - cornerstone of modern anime and full of cool religious allegories and classic 24. Black Mirror - many moments of brilliance here and there and good social commentary besides. 25. Odd Taxi - highly recommend this short little series, everything is absolutely perfectly plotted to perfection in the series' single mystery. 26. Doctor Who - sure, it has some great moments, will give it that xx 27. Gintama - anime Futurama is the among the highest rated anime (on average across multiple seasons) on MAL for good reason, mixing absurdist comedy with great serious samurai arcs almost seamlessly. 28. Avatar: The Last Airbender - highly rated even among dirty weebs for a reason 29. Uma Musume - silly little horse girl anime if you look at it one way, the greatest sports show in existence if you look at it another way. 30. Veep - fantastic political comedy (and yes I enjoyed it more than The Thick Of It). 31. Attack On Titan - big budget anime fantasy is good lets go 32. Better Call Saul - in the same universe as Breaking Bad and very talky 33. Puella Magi Madoka Magica - features magical girls being very demure, very mindful, very Jesus in purgatory 34. Welcome To The NHK - how to ward off depression 35. A Place Further Than The Universe - another pretty much perfect short show that just spreads good vibes and adventure 36. Bojack Horseman - some of the best of modern western animation 37. Chernobyl - very impactful limited series 38. Vikings - one of the best historical TV series by playing a little loose with history while having amazing casting. 39. Re:ZERO - Starting Life In Another World - counterbalances it looking like anime wish fulfilment isekai trash with a ruthless unique concept and some jawdropping cinematic moments. 40. Nichijou - My Ordinary Life - delightfully kooky anime comedy 41. My Hero Academia - baby's first anime doing everything a show of that description needs to do right with a great cast of characters, fantastic music and good arcs supporting the overarching plot. 42. Misfits - always liked shows where people have different powers and this might have been where it originated. 43. One Piece - nearly 200 episodes in and I still have nearly 1000 episodes to go but it's done great so far... 44. The Boys - ridiculous and on the nose but entertaining with it. 45. The Inbetweeners - a classic, not many British comedies top this. 46. Chihayafuru - learned so much about karuta since watching this unorthodox sports anime + some of the most beautiful character designs you'll get anywhere 47. Friends - undeniable in just how good so many of its episodes are. 48. Angel Beats! - funny, emotional and short, like life itself. 49. Psycho-Pass - hey believable worlds set in Philip K Dick-land are hard to come by, PP nails it. 50. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - I'll give the people determined to put this at #1 on MAL something (though Frieren's defeated them for now, yet to see myself how good the whole of Frieren is), this is a banger. made some criminal cuts, need more prestige sci-fi and talky dramas if anyone has any of those x

Well done Lindsey, that's an excellent pop winner, always good to get one of those I pointed, and well deserved after so long. Trifoski in 4th is somehow really shocking to be but incredible to see, Danny Brown mopping up BJSC points :cheeseblock: I was shocked that I got top 20 when reading through in bed last night, but apparently that wasn't enough and actually I got 14th on countback?! With 2 18s hiding in the jury? Thank you everyone, this smashed what I was expecting for 'Carbonated Love', really appreciate it Excellent hosting all the way through blacksquare, really enjoyed your aesthetic approach to the contest and those videos were perfect for tension in revealing each place.

2024 United States Presidential Election Thread
What I mean by that is voters seeing the Trump of 2024, who is completely different to the man who won in 2016, he's lethargic, out of sorts. He always rambled and had run on sentences but he does this more than ever now, talks about nothing in particular. All very telling signs of age and verging on senility. With Biden now out of the race, the Dems can and should go all in on Trump being too old, and the more voters see what he visibly looks like and acts now, the better the chance that works.
