This is fantastic news! :cheer: I was only listening last night to Guy Garvey's show, which is wonderful. It's the only station I bother to listen to these days, as there's so much $h!te polluting the airwaves everywhere else. It's like the last bastion of good taste. Long live 6 Music! \/

I would have loved to have been around during the original summer of love, 1967. Or just the mid to late 60's in general, so many amazing homegrown bands and American imports such as The Byrds and The Lovin' Spoonful .. we were spoilt for choice! I feel sorry for kids growing up today who only get to hear Lady Gaga and bloody Glee. The 60's seemed such a fertile (in more ways than one!) time and the ripples created by The Beatles, The Stones, The Who etc have gone on to influence and inspire many.

Funnily enough, I didn't mind Albania's actually and that was quite poppy! But most of it washed over me, I was hankering after a repeat of France when they entered Sebastien Tellier and he drove on in the golf buggy :lol:

I'd been aware of them before but never really sought to seek them out, but I heard them perform Bloodbuzz Ohio on Later With Jools and it was fantastic. How many albums have they released before this?

I also think they're over-rated. The Bends is probably the only album of theirs I could still sit down and listen to, OK Computer is far too lauded and worshipped although at it's best (Paranoid Android) it is bloody brilliant. I haven't really been terribly interested in much they've done since Kid A, although Pyramid Song was good. They kind of lean towards art-w*n**ry a bit too much for my liking.

Bit of a hazy recollection I know :lol: I think pop has kind of come round full circle in about 10/11 years or so, we had about 3 or 4 years when indie/rock dominated and pop took a back seat but it's definately been creeping back and really seems to be dominating again. I think I'd take the first wave from 1998/99 over Glee and Lady Gaga anyday though!

Ahh, late 90's pop :D Much more edifying than the $h!te that gets in the chart these days! I used to listen to the top 40 religiously when most of these came out, I was 15 and not quite at the point where I discovered the NME :lol: Jennifer Paige.. Crush was a great pop song, did she ever release a follow up? She was quite hot too!

The dance music scene has been so stagnant lately though (or maybe it's been me not keeping up with trends), hearing Joy Orbison and the way he effortlessly links little disparate fragments of subgenre together without it sounding messy and disjointed.. it's just nice to have a talented producer with one eye on the dancefloor and the other on the idm crowd.

Love everything posted in this thread so far, good stuff! Some of the stuff that the Dandy Warhols put out in the late 90's is very tripped out, especially the opening track on the 'Come Down' album, Be-In. There's a track called I Love You on the same album which is very droney and spacey too. Not sure if anyone mentioned Sigur Ros, but Svefn-G-Englar is definately worthy of the ethereal tag - there's so much reverb it sounds as if it was recorded in a cavern!

Bloody hell, when was the last time The Fall had a top 40, let alone top 20, album? :o

Anybody heard this album of hers, released in 1969? It's really untypical of the rest of her output, being a bit of a melting pot of psych-rock, blues, soul and folk styles. She was the first artist to cover a Led Zeppelin song (Your Time Is Gonna Come) and there are also versions of Love Me Do, Lay Lady Lay, Sympathy For The Devil, Walking The Dog (Rufus Thomas) and Mama Roux (Dr John), all embellished with flute, organ and some really funky drumming. She's not really known as an albums act but this is a really strong set, I highly recommend it

Thank you kind Dandy sir :D I mostly exist in a 60's/70's bubble these days but I'm trying to be a bit more modern and keep up with the kids :lol: There aren't many Joy Orbison tracks around actually, as I searched after I'd heard Hyph Mngo (even the title sounds a bit Aphex Twin-ish!) and there are only 3 official releases to his name and a clutch of remixes. Hyph Mngo is the best I've heard so far but check out The Shrew Cushioned The Blow, as that has the same kind of structure and warmth. I can't wait for an album!

Hyph Mngo is one of the best tracks I've heard in ages, it was released last year but I've only just heard it for the first time. He gets lumped in with dubstep but there's something far more interesting about his production technique and beats. There's almost an idm sensibility but at the same time there are really warm accessible melodies and vocal hooks, and even some of the nostalgic fuzz of Boards Of Canada and My Bloody Valentine. The most exciting 'dance' producer since Aphex Twin?

Has anybody heard of them? As far as I know, they've released 2 singles - 'Lies' and 'Stop And Stare' and sound like they have the pop brain of Scissor Sisters with the visceral abandon of Friendly Fires. But better than that sounds :D

I agree with Freddie Mercury, I'm not much of a Queen fan but he was the ultimate showman. Nobody even comes close. Should definately be top of that list, which is largely $h!te. I wouldn't even put Bono in the top 20 let alone number 2, sanctimonious twat.

Christ almighty, there's such a dearth of decent new music at the moment. I've never known the charts to be so bloody dull :zzz:

The father of minimalism. Have you heard of a band called Fridge? Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) is a member, I don't know if they're still active but their Happiness album from 2001 is VERY influenced by Steve Reich, right down to the song titles. Well worth a listen :)
