  1. I genuinely don't think, having completed this, that 1988 is as bad as some would have you believe, nor is it as S/A/W dominated either as thought. Many non SAW tracks did sound "S/A/W- ish" which I think makes it seems worse to those that don't enjoy them- but I think the year has something for everyone (much like the rest of the 80s to be honest). Given the new found domination of young female acts and abundance of pure pop it is, in some ways, the most buzzjack friendly year of the 80s
  2. And so it only remains to thank all who commented and contributed to the thread! See you for 1989 next month!
  3. 7TH JANUARY As expected the final week of 1988 proves to be particularly savage on sales with Christmas sales all jammed into one week in effect, almost everything in the top 10 slides saleswise with some spectacularly bad percentages coming into play. First up the good news, even with a 64% loss “Especially For You” rises 2-1 to finally hit the top and give Jason his first chart topper, Kylie her second, and S/A/W’s 6th as producers, it sold 66,827 copies to have a relatively easy victory in the end though they will doubtless be sad to miss out on the big one! The last record to spend 4 weeks at No 2 before hitting No 1 was Del Shannon's "Runaway" all the way back in 1961! Erasure are playing bridesmaid’s this week with “Crackers International EP” buoyed 3-2 (38,488) accompanied by a 55% drop in sales, and Angry Anderson proving sticking power with “Suddenly” rebounds 4-3 (29,971 – 57%). The very un-festive Inner City reach a new peak 6-4 (24,837 - 45%) a fact that bodes well in the Christmas shake out, probably, next week. Talking of Christmas the festive chart topper is, as expected, heading south, Cliff’s “Mistletoe & Wine” drops 1-5 (24,667 -89%), that percentage drop is eye watering and he may be lucky to be in the top 20 at all next week if that is replicated again, however it also means that the last three No 1 singles have all dropped 1-5, a unique chart feat! Neneh Cherry and The Four Tops can both be happy though as they continue momentum north, Cherry rises 7-6 (22,491- 36%) and the Tops 9-7 (16,983- 50%) but it looks to be all over for Status Quo who drop 5-8 (16,626-68%) and Bros who slump 8-10 (14,365- 58%) but "Cat" has spent 6 weeks in the top 10- their most enduring hit chart wise to date! The sole new song comes from Kim Wilde as she slices a fourth single from her “Close” album. Never before has she strung together three top 10 singles together but the decision to tour with Michael Jackson has been one of the best moves of her career with the revitalisation of her career something to behold. “Four Letter Word” climbs 14-9 (14,994) but despite that “Close” remains outside the top 5 and is yet to clear the 150,000 mark, disappointing as it seems that there aren’t many prepared to commit for an album’s worth from Wilde. So farewell 1988, as we welcome the last year on our 80s journey, 1989. 1- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (66,827) 2- THE CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (38,488) 3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (29,971) 4- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (24,837) 5- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (24,667) 6- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (22,491) 7- LOCO IN ACAPULCO- The Four Tops (16,983) 8- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (16,626) 9- FOUR LETTER WORD- Kim Wilde (14,994) 10- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (14,365)
  4. As expected, several shows are skipped over the summer of 97 due to P.Diddy so I'll have to return to daily posting after next week's shows
  5. 7TH JUNE And the records start to tumble….one of the most anticipated records of the past few months finally hit the shelves and as most predicted flew back off them. Hanson are three brothers from the US aged just 11,14, and 16, their debut single “MMMBop” is as catchy a piece of pop as you can envisage and is currently No 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. So to the records… a) It is the first single to be No 1 simultaneously in the US and UK since Meat Loaf in 1993 b) The first debut hit to do since Rod Stewart in 1971 with “Maggie May” c) The first debut release ever (Stewart having released unsuccessful singles prior to “Maggie May”) d) The Youngest group to top the charts since St Winifred’s School Choir in 1980 e) The first family group to have a No 1 since the Bee Gees in 1987. The single sold an outstanding 260,000 copies last week that’s the biggest weekly tally of the year! It also rules the airwaves showing that this is pretty much the only record in the land right now- or you can be forgiven for thinking that at any rate! Having said that there was considerable interest in the first new Radiohead single in a few years, “Paranoid Android” takes its name from Douglas Adams’ character in “Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy” and was conceived as three different songs written by different members of the group then wielded together. The result has united critics and fans alike and becomes their biggest hit ever at No 3 (94,000) eventually falling behind Eternal’s “I Wanna Be The Only One” which slides 1-2 (98,000). At over 6 minutes long it is the longest top 3 hit since Meat Loaf in 1993. Re-released with new mixes, The Sneaker Pimps “Six Underground” is the latest beneficiary of being used in a film soundtrack. This time around the film in question is “The Saint” which has already provided a No 3 hit for Orbital and now gives the Sneaker Pimps a No 9 (28,000) an improvement of 6 places on its original showing last year. It’s helped by a new collection of mixes and even features a sample of “Golden Girl” from the Goldfinger soundtrack to add that magical touch. George Michael’s mother died in February this year and in response he has co-written “Waltz Away Dreaming” with new artist Toby Bourke. The track is the first song released on George Michael’s own label Aegean with Bourke his first signing and was promoted via the Sun newspaper who offered readers the opportunity to hear it via a pay per listen deal when calling a number. Whether that helped with sales or not the song debuts at No 10 (27,000) to become Michael’s 16th top 10 solo single and 9th consecutively in a run that extends back to 1991. Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli slip 2-4 (66,000) and Rosie Gaines drifts 4-5 (63,000). Former chart toppers Olive drop 3-6 (49,000) The Rembrandts retract 5-7 (44,000) and The Cardigans are spent 6-8 (31,000). In other news we've had 102 new entries into the top 10 year as it is on track to be another record setter with the tally of 170 set last year to beat. 1- MMMBOP- Hanson (260,000) 2- I WANNA BE THE ONLY ONE- Eternal Featuring BeBe Winans (98,000) 3- PARANOID ANDROID- Radiohead (94,000) 4- TIME TO SAY GOODBYE- Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli (66,000) 5- CLOSER THAN CLOSE- Rosie Gaines (63,000) 6- YOU’RE NOT ALONE- Olive (49,000) 7- I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU- The Rembrandts (44,000) 8- LOVEFOOL- Cardigans (31,000) 9- SIX UNDERGROUND- Sneaker Pimps (28,000) 10- WALTZ AWAY DREAMING- George Michael & Toby Bourke (27,000)
  6. 31ST MAY Who said 13 was an unlucky number? Certainly not for Eternal who finally get a chart topper with their thirteenth release, “I Wanna Be The Only One” features gospel legend BeBe Winans but it isn’t their first collaboration, Winans wrote and co-produced the girls hit “Crazy” (No 15, 1994) meaning that he has helped the girls to both their smallest and biggest hit. The song sold an impressive 149,000 copies last week the fourth highest 7 day tally of 1997 so far and easily swept all competition aside, it also sent parent album “Before The Rain” soaring 36-14. Michael Jackson retains the top spot on the album charts but this week’s top 3 singles are now all available on albums which evens the playing field a little. Andrea Bocelli’s “Romanza” is new at No 10 whilst Olive’s “Extra Virgin” opens at No 15, on the singles front it is the same result between the two “Time To Say Goodbye” retains No 2 (120,000) whilst “You’re Not Alone” dives 1-3 (59,000). You’ll note the huge sales difference there, no single so far in 1997 has sold as many copies as the Brightman/ Bocelli collaboration and not been No 1 so they can feel somewhat aggrieved not to be sitting at the top this week. Former backing singer for Prince and a member of the New Power Generation Rosie Gains has long conducted a solo career whilst not singing with the purple one though it didn’t generate much interest. In 1995 she released her album “Closer than Close” and scored a minor hit with “I Want U” (#70) but the title track missed the charts. Now remixed and re-promoted it has finally caught on in the clubs and make its berth at No 4 (54,000). Proving that you can’t keep a good TV Theme down The Rembrandts “I’ll Be There For You” is of course the theme to “Friends” and was a No 3 hit just 2 years ago when the show was first shown on Channel 4 selling over 400,000 copies. Re-released now to coincide with the first two series being re-aired in preparation for season 3 later this year (plus the video release of season 1) the song has become a hit all over again lifting 11-5 (47,000) this week. It is the fourth song to be a top 10 hit twice in the 90s but only the second straightforward re-issue to do so. Otherwise it’s a quiet week in chartland, The Cardigans drift 5-6 (34,000), Shola Ama holds steady at No 7 (29,000), Katrina & The Waves ebb 3-8 (26,000), Damage glide 6-9 (25,000) and R Kelly dips 8-10 (22,000) but has sold 574,000 copies making it the 3rd biggest hit of 1997 so far. Next week sees the entry of three brothers called Hanson- prepare yourselves! 1- I WANNA BE THE ONLY ONE- Eternal/ Bebe Winans (149,000) 2- TIME TO SAY GOODBYE- Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli (120,000) 3- YOU’RE NOT ALONE- Olive (59,000) 4- CLOSER THAN CLOSE- Rosie Gaines (54,000) 5- I’LL BE THERE FOR YOU- The Rembrandts (47,000) 6- LOVEFOOL- Cardigans (34,000) 7- YOU MIGHT NEED SOMEBODY- Shola Ama (29,000) 8- LOVE SHINE A LIGHT- Katrina & The Waves (26,000) 9- WONDERFUL TONIGHT- Damage (25,000) 10- I BELIEVE I CAN FLY- R Kelly (22,000)
  7. 31ST DECEMBER So the big day arrives and somewhat bizarrely the Christmas Chart wasn’t revealed until Boxing Day but no matter for Cliff Richard who is celebrating both the festive No 1 single and album this week in a complete domination of the field. “Mistletoe & Wine” sold a simply astonishing 218,943 copies last week, the first single to break the 200,000 mark, and to sell 100,000 for 4 weeks on the trot, since Band Aid back in 1984. It brings the song’s total to 682,482 as it passes Yazz’s “The Only Way Is Up” as the year’s best seller inching past on Christmas Eve. In the end the victory was relatively convincing for Richard, Kylie & Jason spend a fourth week at the runner up spot but they are back to increasing their sales- by 72% in fact to 187,255 to see “Especially For You” chase “Mistletoe & Wine” through the YTD chart with 489,039 copies to date enough for No 6 on that list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU7V9KUOGEU Even though it’s Christmas there are two new tracks inside the top 10, Neneh Cherry is attracting pretty much universal critical acclaim at present with her single “Buffalo Stance” but most critics would be none too pleased to find out it started life as a S/A/W co-penned track for a group called Morgan-McVey and featured Cherry on guitar in the promo (McVey is Cherry’s boyfriend). The B-Side was an alternative version featured Cherry on lead vocals with alternative lyrics and it’s this version that forms the current “Buffalo Stance” single. She’s had the song produced by the infinitely more credible Tim Simenon of Bomb The Bass who has slung in some samples from Malcolm McLaren’s “Buffalo Gals” (which explains in part the title) along with Miami’s “Chicken Yellow” to give us the single that moves 13-7 (35,666) “Two Hearts” dips 8-10 (32,266) this week but it’s now not the only Collins/ Dozier collaboration in the top 10 as it is joined by “Loco In Acapulco” which is performed by The Four Tops and comes from the “Buster” soundtrack hence the connection to Collins. The group have had something of a renaissance this year with a new album “Indestructible” and a remixed “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” making No 11 back in August thanks to a PWL remix, now they have a 11th top 10 single in their 25 year chart career though a first in 7 years. As you might expect with a sales period of 18-24th December sales are all but two tracks are on the up saleswise with some spectacular sales even below the top 2, Erasure hold at No 3 (85,578) and Angry Anderson sticks at No 4 (69,632) with Status Quo getting the Christmas party started right 7-5 (53,329). Bros fall 6-8 but get a sales increase to 34,017. The only fallers at retail are Inner city who sag 5-6 (45,849) and Phil Collins who drifts 8-10 (28,577). Of course after the high comes the drop, we’ll see just how bad in 7 days time! 1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (218,943) 2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (187,255) 3- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (85,578) 4- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (69,632) 5- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (53,329) 6- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (45,849) 7- BUFFALO STANCE- Neneh Cherry (35,666) 8- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (34,017) 9- LOCO IN ACAPULCO- The Four Tops (32,266) 10- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (28,577)
  8. I don't recall anything but "Stop" getting promoted
  9. 24TH DECEMBER The Cliff/ Kylie & Jason stranglehold on the top 2 continues with both tracks shifting over 100,000 copies to remain more than double ahead of the rest of the field. Cliff now looks certain to become the festive No 1 after selling a new 1988 record of 174,148 copies last week, that’s 495,227 copies to date placing at No 5 on the YTD with 2 weeks of the year left- it’s going to be tight as whether or not it can pass Yazz to become the year’s biggest seller. The single is the first one to sell over 100,000 for three weeks in a row since Nick Berry back in October 1986. Cliff also has the double as “Private Collection” ascends to the top to give him a chart double for a third time in his career. Meanwhile “Especially For You” spends a third week stuck behind “Mistletoe & Wine” selling another 109,174 copies, that’s a modest 16% decrease week on week but probably a decisive one as the far more overtly festive Cliff offering should sell by the bucket load next week taking in the full run up to the big day itself. Still 301,784 in 21 days is a prodigious rate of sales especially in 1988 and passes Jason Donovan’s “Nothing Can Divide Us” and Kylie’s “Got To Be Certain” and “Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi” in terms of their personal best sellers. It's also the first non-chart topper to sell over 100,000 for at least 2 weeks since Wham! 4 years ago. The only new entry into the top 10 is a remix of Petula Clark’s 1964 No 2 hit “Downtown” which was only denied the top spot by the Beatles “I Feel Fine” originally. The track has been remixed by Peter Slaghuis who is most famous for taking “I Can’t Wait” by Nu Shooz and turning it into a hit, and it puts Clark back in the top 10 after a 21 year wait! It has been fuelled in part thanks to a campaign by Philip Schofield on BBC1 who has raised the track’s profile and prompted some of the success of the single. Elsewhere Erasure continue to improve 4-3 (62,866), though they are in no danger of vying for the festive top spot, they do score their best 7 day tally ever. Angry Anderson takes a surprise fall 3-4 (61,727) as memories of that marriage fade and Inner City climb 6-5 (46,512). Status Quo are on the move 9-7 (32,912) and U2 also inch 10-9 (26,741), but both Bros and Phil Collins feel the winter chill tumbling 5-6 (33,813) and 7-8 (29,019) respectively, Bros have incidentally released the new promo for “Silent Night” and will perform the track to close the Christmas edition of TOTP, expect it to rebound. 1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (174,148) 2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (109,174) 3- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (62,866) 4- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (61,727) 5- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (46,512) 6- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (33,813) 7- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (32,912) 8- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (29,019) 9- ANGEL OF HARLEM- U2 (26,741) 10- DOWNTOWN 88- Petula Clark (24,667)
  10. So It's all sorted in terms of embeds and pics. Was fiddly but it's my first time etc.
  11. Bear with- new site and all so everything is trial and error!
  12. 17TH DECEMBER Another week of extraordinary (by 1988 standards) sales for the top 3 as all three record new record weekly totals for the year, first up is Cliff Richard who manages to see off Kylie & Jason once again with “Mistletoe & Wine” posting a sale of 160,973 to bring the song’s three week tally to an incredible 321,079 copies which already places it in the YTD top 15, with three weeks of the year to go maybe Yazz should be worried about grabbing the biggest hit of the year? It’s just the 8th week in 1988 when sales of the No 1 have exceeded the golden 100,000 mark, by comparison there were 35 weeks in both 1981 and 1982 when a six digit tally was recorded for the chart topper. Kylie & Jason meanwhile performed live on TOTP and “Des O’Connor Tonight” and they see sales of “Especially For You” improve by 110% to a mighty 130,050 copies, enough for the No 1 spot in all but two weeks of the year, sadly this is one of those weeks!, however if it keeps the momentum then it should overturn “Mistletoe & Wine” next week. As for Angry Anderson he holds at No 3 in all static top 3 with sales of 77,894, they are all so far ahead of the field that it’s hard to see anyone catching them by Christmas at least. On the album charts Cliff and Kylie swap positions as Cliff moves into the No 2 spot selling 140,000 copies into the bargain but both remain behind “Now 13”. Inner City are back with “Good life”, a second single for the Detroiters who are currently the hottest dance act around, a debut album is promised in the spring you’ll be pleased to hear but for now this is proving the antidote to those Christmas hits you’re hearing in every shop at the moment. “Good Life” scurries 22-6 (32,861) this week. Scoring their 21st top 10 single Status Quo return to the top 10 for the first time in just over 2 years proving you can never quite write them off. “Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)” is based on the English folk song “Darby Kelly” and leaps 20-9 (26,129) to become, by far the biggest single from their 18th album “Ain’t Complaining”, the album has performed disappointingly peaking at No 12 and leaving the charts after 5 weeks, it hasn’t returned since and has sales well under the 100,000 mark. To augment sales the CD single also comes with the single mixes of “Marguerita Time” and “Whatever You Want” Written as a homage to Billie Holliday, U2’s new single “Angel Of Harlem” debuts instantly at No 10 (25,194), it’s the second single taken from “Rattle & Hum” which itself opened at No 1 back in October selling 320,000 in its first 6 days. The album shipped 900,000 copies such was the anticipation though after 9 weeks on sale it has only sold 750,000 copies, not bad by anyone’s standards except perhaps U2 who could reasonably expected a bigger seller given its opening. Erasure climb 7-4 (50,048) overtaking Bros in the process as they continue to ease 4-5 (43,384)- you'll note that though they have moved 2-3-5 they sold more in each week compared to the previous week!, Rick Astley remains static at No 8 (26,928) with Phil Collins falling 6-7 (32,861) just above him. Finally CD singles sales exceeded 90,000- again a new record for the format! 1- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (160,973) 2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (130,050) 3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (77,894) 4- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (50,048) 5- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (43,384) 6- GOOD LIFE- Inner City (32,861) 7- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (32,861) 8- TAKE ME TO YOUR HEART- Rick Astley (26,928) 9- BURNING BRIDGES (ON AND OFF AND ON AGAIN)- Status Quo (26,129) 10- ANGEL OF HARLEM- U2 (25,194)
  13. With the downtime tomorrow the next chart probably won't be posted until wednesday
  14. Looking back on 1988 if they had released GTBC one week later, and Locomotion, JNSPP and EFY one week earlier then they would all have made No 1 in 1988 for Kylie (assuming the same sales pattern for all records).
  15. Haha I had Kylie and Jason, angry Anderson, and Rick Astley so it could be worse
  16. 10TH DECEMBER Well it was a week that didn’t go to plan, that plan being that Kylie & Jason would debut instantly at the top and remain there through to the year end, at least that’s what S/A/W hoped. As it turned out they weren’t banking on the powerhouse that is “Mistletoe & Wine” which went into overdrive to romp home with 128,418 buyers and led from the start off the back of a TOTP performance. It’s Cliff’s 12th chart topper which draws him nearer to the current record of 17 held jointly by Elvis and the Beatles, but his span of 29 years puts him in the record books. So onto THAT duet, the dream team (in terms of 1988 at any rate) comes to fruition as after months of rumours “Especially For You” arrives at No 2 (62,560) to instantly become Donovan’s biggest hit in the UK. For Kylie of course it is her fourth No 2 hit in a row (but this is her biggest first week sale ever) and by way of co-incidence she does get some revenge on Cliff as his album holds at No 3 this week one place behind “Kylie” which has now crossed the million mark, she has sold over 1.6 million singles, by far the biggest act of the year. Kylie & Jason remain the favourite with the bookies and the battle over the next three weeks will be an interesting one. Incidentally after 17 straight chart weeks, last week was the first PWL/ S/A/W free top 10, a situation now rectified! And right behind them is Angry Anderson, former lead vocalist with Rose Tattoo who’s only UK hit was “Rock N Roll Outlaw” which peaked at No 61 in 1981 following an appearance at the Reading festival. As the group split Anderson appeared in the film “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome” and then came the single “Suddenly”, it was released back in July 1987 in Australia following the airing of the wedding of Scott & Charlene in “Neighbours” and went to No 2 behind, fittingly, Minogue’s “The Loco-Motion”, he’s waiting over a year for the UK airing of the wedding episode before chancing his luck here. It’s worked at any rate the song charging 16-3 (43,877) and don’t dismiss it from taking advantage of any slip by either Cliff or Kylie & Jason. It also marks the first time that any soap has contributed to two of the top 3 hits in the charts simultaneously. None of their previous 5 top 10 singles debuted inside the top 10 which makes Erasure’s “Crackers International EP” already remarkable in their career. The main track “Stop” has already attracted a lot of airplay which helps to explain its No 7 (32,861) debut, the band are between albums at present, however wanting to put something out for their fans and to celebrate another great year, they’ve been on a world tour throughout most of 1988 but did premiere “Stop” during their sold out dates at the Birmingham NEC last month which has improved their stock no end. “The Innocents” has sold a hearty 400,000 copies thus far but still has some way to go to match the 550,000 copies posted by the previous offering “The Circus”. Just 12 months ago Rick Astley was the favourite for the Christmas No 1 and just about the hottest thing in pop, fast forward a year and there’s little doubt that his star is on the descent, new single “Take Me To Your Heart” makes the top 10 after three weeks on the chart, slower than any of his 4 previous hits and even then it creeps 12-8 (30,073). It is once again penned by S/A/W one of only three songs on his second album “Hold Me In Your Arms” that are, it debuts at No 8 in neat symmetry this week, a somewhat less spectacular start than his debut album which of course shot to the top spot. Some have remarked on the song’s resemblance to Inner City’s “Big Fun” and certainly the 12” Dick Dastardly mix isn’t a million miles from the Inner City track. In other news Bros dip 2-4 (42,636) as the competition proves too strong despite a sales hike and Robin Beck is toppled 1-5 (38,913) just above the static Phil Collins at No 6 (36,516) in a tightly packed chart. Further down Michael Jackson reverses 8-9 (29,699) and Chris De Burgh spirals 3-10 (29,631). 1-MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (128,418) 2- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan (62,560) 3- SUDDENLY- Angry Anderson (43,877) 4- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (42,636) 5- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (38,913) 6- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (36,516) 7- CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL EP- Erasure (32,861) 8- TAKE ME TO YOUR HEART- Rick Astley (30,073) 9- SMOOTH CRIMINAL- Michael Jackson (29,699) 10- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (29,631)

The Highlights The Weeknd (38-18-5-1) 1,234,000 Making short work of the opposition and with near constant residency in the top 10 (and never sinking below No 32 in it’s 4 year chart run)- The Weeknd claims the biggest selling album of the first half of the 2020’s. Don’t dismiss Elton who only recently made No 1 with “Diamonds”, previous best sellers of the decade by Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi also retain top 5 positions though both are in decline position wise. Taylor’s biggest seller of the decade so far holds in the top 10 but sees ABBA and Eminem soar above her- Abba on course for 7 million at some point in 2025 unless something dramatic happens. Incidentally if it does then it will be the 4th decade on the trot that it has passed the million mark in terms of sales within a decade! Queen and Eminem slip past a million sales in the 20s, as does Olivia Rodrigo- the only female to do so in the current decade so far (to January 25)! y3XMTqStUVA
  21. 3RD DECEMBER The Christmas race begins this week in earnest but more on that in a moment, for now Robin Beck completes her third week as the nation’s favourite, “First Time” moving a further 55,029 copies to bring its total to 254,048 copies and should be on course for 400,000 by the year end. You’ll note no doubt that that is a drop of 27% week on week so should in theory be very vulnerable next week just in time for the arrival of Kylie & Jason! Bh6-L98l6eE The highest new entry of the week however belongs to Bros, their double A-Side “Cat Among The Pigeons/ Silent Night” was only slightly behind Robin Beck at the start of the week but TOTP gave Beck breathing space. Still, it’s a fifth release from the boys “Push” album which is now fast approaching 900,000 copies sold this year, so it is quite a show of their popularity to be able to debut so high so far into an album campaign. Of course the appearance of “Silent Night” is also a draw though that side will be getting promoted nearer the big day though its “Cat” which is getting all the promo at present, it was originally a track about teenage pregnancy though that was thought to be too controversial for their audience so a quick re-write of the lyrics and a promo now makes it about a young man who leaves home as he can’t bear to witness domestic abuse against his mother by his father- a far cheerier message with a promo for “Silent Night” currently being shot as an accompaniment to the story. It sold 37,485 copies last week. wetf1YrYJDg Sales on the whole are much better this week, in the top 5 at least with healthy increases for Chris De Burgh (25% to 36,414) and Pet Shop Boys increase by 40% to 35,309 as they rise 7-4, but INXS do relent to 33,932 though they drop 2-4. Another contender for the festive top spot makes its presence felt as Phil Collins’s “Two Hearts” expands 16-6 (32,776), that’s his 9th top 10 single (if you count this year’s “In The Air Tonight” as a separate hit). The 60s feel to the song is obviously down to the fact that it is taken from the “Buster” film soundtrack and this particular track is co-written and co-produced by Collins and Lamont Dozier to give that authentic sound, it’s already rising rapidly up the US charts hoping to follow in the footsteps of “Groovy Kind Of Love” which topped the charts on both sides of the pond. b40hrVcx_xo Penned back in 1976 for the musical “Scraps” which was based on a Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl” the musical was plucked from relative obscurity by HTV last Christmas and adapted for TV featuring Roger Daltry and Twiggy who sang this song. Richard loved the song “Mistletoe & Wine” and asked if some of the lyrics could be rewritten to reflect a more Christian take on the festive period to which the original writers didn’t object to and thusly the current version of the song got released and sees Cliff debut at No 7 (31,688). It’s Cliff’s 55th top 10 single (drawing him level with Elvis) and his 99th single release, something big is promised for his 100th single at some point next year! This is also just Cliff’s 5th single to debut inside the top 10 the others being “A Voice In The Wilderness (No 10, 1960, “Fall In love With You” (No 6, 1960) “The Young ones” (No 1, 1962) and “Living Doll” (No 4, 1986), all made the top 2 so expect this to rise despite the fact that it features on his greatest hit set “Private Collection 1979-1988” which dips 2-3 this week on the album charts. 0Xw_xreLYa8 More a promo video for the forthcoming “Moonwalker” film, Michael Jackson plucks a 7th single from “Bad” in the form of “Smooth Criminal” which naturally comes with an amazing video with some visual trickery. Originally called “Al Capone” the song was re-titled “Smooth Criminal” and was going to be the album’s title until vetoed by Quincy Jones, the track rises 12-8 (31,535) to become a 5th top 10 single from the album, a 22nd top 10 hit (not including his Jackson 5 hits) and a 16th top 10 during a decade which he has dominated- he is now just 1 top 10 single behind the decade leader Madonna. dTXcBo86pz4 The Bacharach & David composition “I Say A Little Prayer” has had many interpretations over the years but has only been a chart hit for Aretha Franklin some 20 years ago, it now provides the third release for Bomb The Bass who have roped in singer Maureen Walsh to provide the vocals on this cover which moves 19-10 (25,619). That makes it three out of three in terms of top 10 singles for Tim Simenon though the album “Into The Dragon” could only make No 18 and currently languishes at No 76 after just 7 weeks. CggNhQm6bUc Salt N Pepa tumble 4-9 (26,486) to round off the top 10. Next week be prepared for the Christmas favourite to enter the top 10! 1- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (55,029) 2- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- Bros (37,485) 3- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (36,414) 4- LEFT TO MY OWN DEVICES- Pet Shop Boys (35,309) 5- NEED YOU TONIGHT- INXS (33,932) 6- TWO HEARTS- Phil Collins (32,776) 7- MISTLETOE AND WINE- Cliff Richard (31,688) 8- SMOOTH CRIMINAL- Michael Jackson (31,535) 9- TWIST AND SHOUT- Salt N Pepa (26,486) 10- SAY A LITTLE PRAYER- Bomb The Bass Featuring Maureen (25,619)
  22. 15. Harry’s House- Harry Styles (15-13-15) 848,000 14. AM Arctic Monkeys (41-30-23-16-14) 852,000 (T/S 2,098,000) 13. Time Flies 1994-2009 Oasis (24-20-19-18-11) 908,000 (T/S 2,033,000) Double Harry this time though both his albums are in decline on this survey. Arctic Monkeys and Oasis both move over the 2 million mark and climb here. Meanwhile Ed starts to move back up too. LoMTK0HxPsA
  23. 20. The Tortured Poets Department- Taylor Swift (NEW) 784,000 19. Future Nostalgia Dua Lipa (3-3-7-15-19) 804,000 18. 30 Adele (2-3-8-18) 826,000 17. Rumours Fleetwood Mac (15-16-16-17-16) 843,000 (T/S 5,077,000) Into the top 20 with our highest new entry and best seller of 2024 from Taylor (naturally) along with “Folklore” which inches up here overtaking both Dua and Adele, the latter of which is struggling to get to 3 x platinum which is a mighty fall from her previous sets. Fleetwood Mac remain ever present and move over the 5 million mark! OQ8fYZlo6C4
  24. 26TH NOVEMBER Firstly the good news, Robin Beck remains clear of the chasing field, sales of “First Time” show no sign of abating yet, it shifted another 76,874 copies last week to open a commanding lead over the field. Below her though sales are dire to be frank, INXS post a 13% sales increase to move 4-2 (37,808) and Chris De Burgh actually loses sales as he powers 8-3 (29,376)- very poor. 6h-lEnJ67W4 Onto better news and the return of Salt N Pepa who sampled the Isley Brothers on their last hit “Shake Your Thing” (No 22) and now cover the Top Notes 1962 track “Twist & Shout” which was also covered by….The Isley Brothers, The highest charting version came courtesy of Brian Poole & The Tremeloes who took the song to No 4 in 1963, The Beatles version (perhaps the most famous) was a feature on an EP and was therefore not included on the main chart as were the rules of the time. Salt N Pepa do however become the first rap act to have two top 5 singles as this single advances 12-4 (26,928). gsJzMC2EHpE Iron Maiden have doubtless had their most impressive year based on chart performance, they now score their third top 10 single on the trot and of 1988 with “The Clairvoyant” rising 13-6 (25,194) thanks in the main to a newly issued CD version of the single bolstering its sales. The single is the third release from “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son” which despite another hit single remains absent from the album charts, Lyrically the track concerns the death of Psychic Doris Stokes (who knew) and is helped in promotion by the fact the band are back in the UK on their world tour. s5Q_rbs9ul8 Another single and another top 10 single for The Pet Shop Boys. After the disappointment of “Domino Dancing” it seems that new song “Left To My Own Devices” seems to be more promising as it debuts at No 7 this week after attracting 25,041 buyers. The song is the boys 9th top 10 single, their 8th in a row, and the 6th to debut inside the big 10, an impressive set of stats, the current album “Introspective” could only make No 2 on debut behind U2’s “Rattle & Hum” but is already out of the top 20. Xs2uibC2FWs Well done to Deacon Blue who defy chart experts and rise 10-8 (24,531) after they stalled last week, but no joy for Yazz who tumbles 2-5 (26,146), Brother Beyond who slide 6-9 (23,426) and Kylie Minogue who dives 3-10 (21,386), incidentally Brother Beyond’s album “Get Even” debuts at only No 15, a far cry from the No 2 peak of “Push” and with a new Bros single out this week expect a new entry in the top 10 for them next week. 1- THE FIRST TIME- Robin Beck (76,874) 2- NEED YOU TONIGHT- INXS (37,808) 3- MISSING YOU- Chris De Burgh (29,376) 4- TWIST AND SHOUT- Salt N Pepa (26,928) 5- STAND UP FOR YOUR LOVE RIGHTS- Yazz (26,146) 6- THE CLAIRVOYANT- Iron Maiden (25,194) 7- LEFT TO MY OWN DEVICES- Pet Shop Boys (25,041) 8- REAL GONE KID- Deacon Blue (24,531) 9- HE AIN’T NO COMPETITION- Brother Beyond (23,426) 10- JE NE SAIS PAS POURQUOI- Kylie Minogue (21,386) So with that our thoughts turn to the Christmas No 1 as the race begins this week so here’s this year’s runners and riders: KYLIE MINOGUE & JASON DONOVAN- ESPECIALLY FOR YOU- No-one’s heard the song yet (it premier’s sometime this week) but already this dream duet for Scott & Charlene from “Neighbours” is the bookies favourite as the lady of the year teams up with real life boyfriend Jason Donovan- expect it to fly off the shelves. ANGRY ANDERSON- SUDDENLY- If you’ve not quite had enough of “that” wedding yet then how about the wedding theme which enters the top 40 this week, it could provide the only challenge to the couple themselves! BROS- CAT AMONG THE PIGEONS/ SILENT NIGHT- The boyband of the year release a festive “Silent Night”- who could resist? PHIL COLLINS- TWO HEARTS- Follow up to his No 1 and more 60s influenced pop from the “Buster” soundtrack. BOBBY MCFERRIN- THINKING ABOUT YOUR BODY- More of the same that made “Don’t Worry Be Happy” such a big hit this understated hit may be on top come the big day thanks to the song’s use in a “Cadbury’s” commercial. CLIFF RICHARD- MISTLETOE & WINE- Rapidly gaining favour at the bookies this could surprise us all after a quite 1988 for the singer. BUDDY HOLLY/ SHAKIN STEVENS- TRUE LOVE- In a re-run of the “When I Fall In Love” incident last year Shaky is cast in the role of Rick Astley- the young upstart who’s cheekily covered a classic against the original- we’ll see if it plays out in the same way, Holly, like McFerrin, has a chocolate TV Commercial to help him, in his case Terry’s All Gold. FREIHEIT- KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE- Early favourite for the festive top spot this has since slackened the pace after the announcement of the Kylie & Jason single- will still do very well.
  25. 24TH MAY Against expectations Olive are No 1 for a second week and sales of “You’re Not Alone” off just fractionally at 74,000 as it shows remarkable consistency in the charts of 1997. It led from the off and indeed increased its lead as the week progressed which bodes well for a third week at the top next week. 5W3bf-wfdHQ Highest new entry of the week goes to Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli, “Con Te Patiro” appeared on Bocelli’s 1995 album “Vivere” and was picked to be used for promotion of the final fight by boxer Henry Maske last year when it was turned into a duet with Sarah Brightman with some re-written lyrics in English. The pair performed the track at the fixture and it shot to No 1 in Germany by the year end where it stayed for 13 weeks and has since become the biggest selling single there ever! Since then its topped charts in many European countries and now threatens to repeat here as it smashes in at No 2 (60,000) marking Bocelli’s first appearance in the singles chart and the highest placing for Brightman who scored 5 previous top 10 singles but none as big as this. g3ENX3aHlqU Onto that Eurovision winner then, yes a fortnight ago Katrina & The Waves broke the UK’s 16 year wait for a winner and took top honours in Dublin romping home to an easy victory. It marks a return, not only for the UK in the competition, but also Katrina & The Waves who have only been in the top 20 once before, 12 years ago with “Walking On Sunshine”, so they must be thankful that they got involved in the competition. The track debuted at a rather lowly No 50 before shooting to No 13 in the tun in to the big day itself but now with its winning status it moves 13-3 (45,000) this week, all the UK’s previous outright winning entrants (Sandie Shaw, Brotherhood Of Man, and Bucks Fizz) took their tracks to No 1 but it looks as though “Love Shine A Light” may not follow in their footsteps as it slackened from its early No 2 midweek position. If it goes no further it will become the lowest peaking UK winning entrant to the competition! k6gDNlkS5fo No Mercy’s “Where Do You Go” remains one of the year’s biggest sellers which makes their follow up single all the more likely to be a substantive hit. “Please Don’t Go” duly obliges as it launches straight in at No 4 (43,000), the boys album is out next month and will be the real test of their popularity. 9IfZpngch6g R Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly” tumbles 5-8 (28,000) but is now well past the 500,000 mark, but he’s got another top 10 hit on his hands now though he isn’t the artist credited. Toni Braxton’s follow up to “Un-Break My Heart” is “I Don’t Want To” and yes it is produced and written by R Kelly who also provides all instrumentation and backing vocals for the track but its Braxton’s 4th top 10 hit and third within the last 10 months as it debuts at No 9 (26,000). uesdoK4Mji4 Cardigans drop 2-5 (36,000) but stay slightly ahead of Damage who retreat themselves 3-6 (34,000) and Shola Ama who slides 4-7 (29,000). DJ Quicksilver remains anchored to the top 10 after selling 25,000 copies last week. 1- YOU’RE NOT ALONE- Olive (74,000) 2- TIME TO SAY GOODBYE- Sarah Brightman & Andre Bocelli (60,000) 3- LOVE SHINE A LIGHT- Katrina & The Waves (45,000) 4- PLEASE DON’T GO- No Mercy (43,000) 5- LOVEFOOL- Cardigans (36,000) 6- WONDERFUL TONIGHT- Damage (34,000) 7- YOU MIGHT NEED SOMEBODY- Shola Ama (29,000) 8- I BELIEVE I CAN FLY- R Kelly (28,000) 9- I DON’T WANT TO- Toni Braxton (26,000) 10- BELLISSIMA- DJ Quicksilver (25,000) http://i.imgur.com/q5DvLjB.jpg
