  1. Yes 3 charts left for 1981
  2. 12TH DECEMBER A very slender lead for Cliff Richard was soon dispensed with after a well received performance on TOTP by Human League which today sees "Don't You Want Me" leap 9-1 (99,000) to become their first chart topper and has surprised many in the industry in becoming such a big single given that it is the fourth release from "Dare", and album which has already been No 1 and generated three top 12 hits. uPudE8nDog0 Cliff may very well not have expected "Daddy's Home" to become such a hit as he is off touring at present and therefore not available for TOTP, a unhappy co-incidence that he may live to regret if the song progresses no further, it does clock in at No 2 this week on a sale of 90,000 enough for No 1 in 4 of the last 6 weeks. Julio Iglesias sees his sales drop to 77,000 copies last week despite TOTP and the publicity of being No 1 as he still slides 1-3 this week proving that the song was past its retail peak even before it hit the top. Originally a 1971 No 14 hit for Labi Siffre, "It Must Be Love" has been covered by Madness which this week transforms into their 9th straight top 10 hit. It doesn't feature on their album "7" which was only released two months ago, the rate at which the band move on may provide the key to their high top 10 ratio. It accelerates 24-7 (54,000) this week and maybe worth an outside punt for the festive No 1. alWXiz5hRR0 Firm favourite with the bookies to be the Christmas No 1 Adam & The Ants arrive this week at No 9 with "Ant Rap" (48,000) this time around they've also recruited Lulu into the video for that extra splash of celebrity. It becomes the 13th (and almost definitely the last) track of 1981 to soar straight into the top flight and all eyes are on how this performs next week! The group are about to embark on their "Revue" set of concerts next week- a 2 hour extravaganza which promises a full theatrical performance from the band, the single meanwhile comes with an advent calendar=esque cover as a gimmick- you can't say they aren't going for it B4z__lCCBX0 Sprinting 21-10 (44,000) this week Godley and Crème get a second top 10 hit on the trot with "Wedding Bells". Parent album "Ismism" has failed to dent the top 20 so far a situation they must hope to remedy especially given the comparatively high sales in the album market over the next few weeks. Qwl5bKc8j4w We don't normally venture outside the top 10 but given its rate by the bookies in terms of its ability to make No 1 in 2 weeks time, some are surprised by the entry of Abba's "One Of Us" at No 11 this week especially as the previous two albums' lead singles all debuted inside the top 10 ("Chiquitita", and "The Winner Takes It All" specifically) but this can be accounted for given the proximity of Christmas and that the album "The Visitors" is due out this week- some fans may be waiting. Back to the top 10 and climbers include a still buoyant Diana Ross 5-4 (69,000) but otherwise three tracks are falling, Earth Wind & Fire 3-5 (61,000), Soft Cell 4-6 (59,000) and David Bowie & Queen slip badly 2-8 (49,000) In a side issue the BMRB and the BPI this week made a decision to alter the chart compilation period from Monday- Saturday to a Saturday- Friday to enable the shops to return their chart logs to the BMRB by post instead of using couriers on a Saturday which is more costly. The move is expected to save up to £100,000 in costs. The first chart to cover this period will be W/E 09.01.1982 to minimise the disruption to the chart given that no chart will be compiled the week prior and would have consisted of only a few days returns in any event given the festive period. 1- DON’T YOU WANT ME- Human League (99,000) 2- DADDY’S HOME- Cliff Richard (90,000) 3- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (77,000) 4- WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE- Diana Ross (69,000) 5- LET’S GROOVE- Earth Wind & Fire (61,000) 6- BEDSITTER- Soft Cell (59,000) 7- IT MUST BE LOVE- Madness (54,000) 8- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (49,000) 9- ANT RAP- Adam & The Ants (48,000) 10- WEDDING BELLS- Godley & Creme (44,000)

  4. 5TH DECEMBER We're now in the run up to the big day and those big festive hits are now starting to line up. Abba are releasing a new single next week a week ahead of a new album and are favourites in some quarters for the festive No 1 along with Adam & The Ants who will challenging Abba for a new entry in the top 10. All of this is by way of explanation of the curious "holding" nature of the top 10 this week and the fact that Julio Iglesias rises to the top of the charts despite a sales drop to just 83,000 copies, the song has now sold 341,016 in total so the track will be lucky to make vast inroads into the top 40 for the year. It is the second single in a foreign language to hit the top after "Je T'aime Moi (Non Plus)" in 1969 and the second Spanish act to make the top after Baccara in 1977 sLTZNVQFt3c Iglesias was the only one of the top 3 not to feature on TOTP this week but in a curious reversal of the effect of the show the other tracks all lose sales indicating their appeal is truly on the wain, Queen & Bowie fall a spot 1-2 (71,000) and Earth, Wind & Fire hold at No 3 but lose 18% sales wise to post 63,000 sales this week. Looking very confident in its challenge for Christmas No 1 Cliff Richard rounds off a successful 1981 with "Daddy's Home" a cover of a Shep and the Limelights 1961 US hit that did nothing in the UK charts so is still unknown to many in this country. It accelerates 15-6 (57,000) this week and in a weak market could easily go to No 1 next Sunday. S74vu-o3vnU Nothing, it seems can stop the Human League in 1981, who today score a third top 10 hit in just 3 months with "Don't You Want Me". An usual video of a film within a film has garnered interest and helped in making the fourth single from the No 1 album "Dare" a hit. Indeed the band are reputedly not happy with the release of the single at all, only becoming convinced that it would be good value for their fans by including a poster of the band on the 7" vinyl, whether or not that's true it appears to have done the trick as the track becomes the 12th single to debut in the top 10 this year as it crashes in at No 9 (38,000). Incidentally if you're wondering why the single sleeve credits "Human League 100" instead of the usual "red" or "blue" label they employ, then the 100 is a reference to their favourite restaurant in Sheffield which at No 100 address wise apparently. KSntreBJ3UM Formed from the remnants of the band Leyton Buzzards, Modern Romance broke onto the chart landscape this summer with "Everybody Salsa" and this week hope to get that Christmas office party all sown up with "Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey" which climbs 12-10 (37,000), don't count against this one going much higher over the next weeks. FKClsEokUs4 Elsewhere this week climbers include Diana Ross climbs 7-5 (61,000) and The Pretenders rocket 10-7 (50,000) whilst Soft Cell hold at No 4 (62,000) making a repeat of "Tainted Love" looking unlikely, and Haircut 100 drop 4-8 (43,000) as their challenge falters. 1- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (83,000) 2- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (71,000) 3- LET’S GROOVE- Earth Wind & Fire (63,000) 4- BEDSITTER- Soft Cell (62,000) 5- WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE- Diana Ross (61,000) 6- DADDY’S HOME- Cliff Richard (57,000) 7- I GO TO SLEEP- The Pretenders (50,000) 8- FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)- Haircut 100 (43,000) 9- DON’T YOU WANT ME?- The Human League (38,000) 10- AY AY AY AY MOOSEY- Modern Romance (37,000) Next week all eyes on Abba and Adam & The Ants.

  7. 28TH NOVEMBER Perhaps the rate at which "Greatest Hits" by Queen is selling is stopping "Under Pressure" from really taking off (even though it isn't on the album) but for whatever reason the track sold a very respectable 102,000 last week (up 20%) and is the 29th week in 1981 where the No 1 has sold in six figures weekly (7 more than in all of 1980 in its entirety). In total "Under Pressure" has sold 230,000 copies in 21 days. a01QQZyl-_I Soft Cell have a double celebration this month as "Tainted Love" passed "Stand And Deliver" as the best selling single of 1981 (The Ants still can't pass Queen on the album charts), and follow up track "Bedsitter" also arrives in the top 10 today 13-5 (53,000) as a precursor to their debut album "Non Stop Erotic Cabaret" which is due this week and should be a big festive seller. stb9jwd5y-k Pencilled in to be produced by Chic the new Diana Ross album actually marks the beginning of Ross as a producer himself and she's chosen the Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers classic "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" which topped the UK charts back in 1956, The album was released back in September and has already made the top 20 though it has so far disappointed in relation to previous set "Diana". KK2Xx3zW5wg After covering the Kinks track "Stop Your Sobbing" to give them their first hit, the Pretenders return to the top flight today with another Kinks cover, this time "I Go To Sleep" which is a fourth single from their "Pretenders II" album. The fact that Hynde has just started dating the Kinks frontman Davies ensures that he won't be envious of the single's success as it leaps 12-10 (41,000) this week, a surprise to some given the last single bombed at No 45. hs5NkMjCi8c Julio Iglesias and Earth Wind & Fire benefit from TOTP this week as they move northwards 3-2 (94,000) and 9-3 (77,000) respectively, which means that Haircut 100 are stranded at No 4 despite a healthy sales increase themselves to 73,000. The rest are fallers, OMD drop 5-6 (50,000), Olivia Newton-John slips against predictions 7-8 (44,000) and the Police are heading out of the top 10 as they rush 2-9 (42,000) 1- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (102,000) 2- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (94,000) 3- LET’S GROOVE- Earth, Wind & Fire (77,000) 4- FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)- Haircut 100 (73,000) 5- BEDSITTER- Soft Cell (53,000) 6- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (50,000) 7- WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE- Diana Ross (49,000) 8- PHYSICAL- Olivia Newton John (44,000) 9- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (42,000) 10- I GO TO SLEEP- The Pretenders (41,000) With Christmas just a month away we turn to who will take the festive chart topper? ANT RAP- Adam & The Ants Bookies favourites and with two back to back chart toppers you can see why! The video will apparently feature none other than Lulu- who can stop them! CHRISTMAS ON 45- Holly And The Ivys Combining Christmas with the medley craze of 1981- what can go wrong and Starsound has already proved this can be commercial gold. DON’T YOU WANT ME- Human League Fourth cut from “Dare” which may hamper it, but it’s already touted as the best thing on the album and the last two singles both went top 10- should be there or thereabouts HAPPY XMAS (WAS IS OVER)- John Lennon & Yoko Ono Missed out on the top spot last year, is there enough goodwill to his memory to succeed this year? HOKEY COKEY- Snowmen Seasonal favourite given a 1981 twist- is it silly enough to succeed? I WANNA BE A WINNER- Brown Sauce The presenters of Multi-Coloured swapshop combine to give us this novelty wonder- it should have the Kids vote and that can be enough at Christmas! IT MUST BE LOVE- Madness On a hot streak of 8 straight top 10 singles in a row but the search is still on for their first chart topper- could this be the one? JINGLE BELLS- Hysterics Hysterical laughter to the tune of “Jingle Bells”- as entertaining as it sounds but then if St Winifred’s School Choir can convince people, who can say. LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE- Bucks Fizz Proving remarkably resilient to their critics- this one is getting rave reviews and the child friendly chorus and lyrics may prove a festive hit MERRY XMAS EVERYBODY/ I WISH IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS EVERYDAY The seasonals are back for anyone that wants to buy them though most of us are just asking why! MY OWN WAY- Duran Duran One of the most talked about new groups of the year, last single became a top 5 hit- can this do better? ONE OF US- Abba A new album and single in time for Christmas- Could Abba finally bag themselves the festive No 1? SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD- The Police Their last single hit No 1 and they are rarely far from the top spot- discount them at your peril

  9. 21ST NOVEMBER For artists who have between them sold millions of singles and had 26 top 10 hits it may come as a surprise to note that prior to “Under Pressure” Bowie and Queen had only had three chart toppers to their joint credit. They add to that tally today with the aforementioned song which leapfrogs 8-1 (85,000), both acts are busy touring at present which explains why there is no appearance from the acts themselves in the promo. Queen hold at the top of the album charts holding off Adam & The Ants much to the surprise of many insiders who thought that those ants couldn’t be stopped this year. a01QQZyl-_I The police clock in at No 2 as they drop off the top but sell just 73,000, a reduction from last week which bucks the general trend of new No 1 singles which sell well off the back of the associated press, perhaps with Christmas fast approaching their album seems a better present? Two new hits this week for tracks which are already big sellers stateside. First up is Olivia Newton-John who isn’t a star used to courting controversy but “Physical” is getting some commentators in the US hot under the collar thanks to some of the lyrics and a rather risqué ending to the promo video. It is certainly a more sexual image than many are used to but it seems to have paid off as the song is now No 1 in the US and climbs 11-7 (49,000) here to become her first top 10 single since she made No 1 last year with “Xanadu”. Rumour has it that it was offered to Rod Stewart who turned it down, he must be regretting it now as his own “Tonight I’m Yours” does climb 10-8 (47,000) but is not below Newton-John. yPXNZo40ePE After a pretty amazing 1979 which saw Earth Wind & Fire score three top 10 hits the band had a less than impressive 1980 releasing 4 singles none of which got higher than No 29. They’re back with a new album and find themselves back in the top flight as “Let’s Groove” rushes 20-9 (43,000) proving that there is still some room in the market for some old fashioned disco! 5yX3Z7lnMuc A couple of fallers this week, Four Tops drop 3-6 (55,000), and Squeeze take a big tumble 4-10 (42,000) whilst OMD hold steady at No 5 (57,000). Two climbers as well- Julio Iglesias edges nearer the top 6-3 (66,000) and Haircut 100 make a more impressive move 9-4 (62,000) and could make a challenge to the top next week. 1- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (85,000) 2- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (73,000) 3- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (66,000) 4- FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)- Haircut 100 (62,000) 5- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (57,000) 6- WHEN SHE WAS MY GIRL- Four Tops (55,000) 7- PHYSICAL- Olivia Newton-John (49,000) 8- TONIGHT I’M YOURS- Rod Stewart (47,000) 9- LET’S GROOVE- Earth, Wind & Fire (43,000) 10- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (42,000)

  14. Relatively- it was the 8th best selling album of 81, total sales of albums were 92 million in the year which was equivalent to 2013 approximately to give you an idea of size- not massive.
  15. No sorry- no information on that one sadly- album figures pre mid 80s are virtually non-existent.

  18. 14TH NOVEMBER Celebrating their fourth chart topper today The Police are back on top with "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" which slips past Altered Images 3-1 (76,000) to become 1981's 16th No 1 hit, a marked come down from 1980 which recorded 24 in total, it was, in some respects, the last track standing as all other challenges appeared to fade. Altered Images meanwhile cling to No 2 spot though it loses sales at 67,000 as it faded through the week. RucEqvQf0ls Finishing fourth in the Eurovision song contest in 1970 Julio Iglesias has been recording albums in French and Spanish during the 70s and creating an not inconsiderable career on the continent and indeed is the biggest selling artist on CBS worldwide outstripping even Adam & The Ants in sales over 1981. Two years ago he signed a worldwide deal with CBS and began recording in English which has now yielded a top 10 single here, though the single itself is sung mostly in his mother tongue. "Begin The Beguine (Volver A Empezar)" sprints 21-7 (54,000) today and is a cover of a Cole Porter 1935 composition from the musical "Jubilee" and has been covered by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Liberace among others but never with this success in the UK charts. The former Real Madrid Goalkeeper is now a bona fide pop star- could it hit the back of the net? FcL2w0QAMAk Duets between big acts sometime hit the right vein, and this week "Under Pressure" sees Bowie and Queen combine and become the 11th track in 1981 to debut in the top 10. It enters this week at No 8 (43,000) to become Queen's 11th top 10 hit and Bowie's 15th, it started out as a Queen track with a working title of "Feel Like" but was re-written substantively with the help of Bowie who was due to record backing vocals for another Queen track which was subsequently scrapped. Incidentally Queen are No 1 on the album charts today with their "Greatest Hits" which doesn't feature this track, and holds off new albums by Adam & The Ants, Depeche Mode, OMD and another act who makes his top 10 presence felt today- more on that in a minute. a01QQZyl-_I Rapidly becoming pin ups thanks in the main to front man Nick Heyward, Haircut 100 are the new kids on the block in the chart world with debut single "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" thundering 19-9 (42,000) . The band only formed in its present line up last year and were signed earlier this year so things have happened pretty quickly in the grand scheme of things. fdrFTIjUZ68 Like Bowie, Rod Stewart is today enjoying his 15th top 10 hit with the lead single from his album of the same title ("Tonight I'm Yours)". The album debuts at No 8 with the single up 13-10 (40,000) to become Stewart's first top 10 hit in 3 years the longest absence from the top flight since his solo career began back in 1971. Stewart is also rumoured be funding the screening of his L.A show via satellite over here over the festive period in what is thought to be a first, and is currently in talks with the BBC over the project.. uvvdUjTjcKc So what's going on elsewhere in the top 10? The Four Tops climb 5-3 (65,000) and OMD follow suit 7-5 (60,000) whilst Squeeze hold at No 4 (62,000) but the big faller is Barbara Gaskin & Dave Stewart who topple 1-6 (56,000) the biggest fall since St Winifred's School Choir back in January this year. 1- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (76,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (67,000) 3- WHEN SHE WAS MY GIRL- Four Tops (65,000) 4- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (62,000) 5- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (60,000) 6- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (56,000) 7- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (54,000) 8- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (43,000) 9- FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)- Haircut 100 (42,000) 10- TONIGHT I’M YOURS- Rod Stewart (40,000)

  20. 7TH NOVEMBER One of the closest run weeks in chart history (and certainly in the 80s) sees both "It's My Party" and "Happy Birthday" sell virtually the same amount of copies to keep the top two on lockdown for a further week. In the end under 20 sales separated the two tracks with both songs recording a sale of 73,000 copies, that's a decline of 21% for Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart and a 3% increase for Altered Images, the two songs fought all week with an early slight advantage to Gaskin & Stewart being eroded over the weekend but both will be lucky to be in the running next week given those sales. In fact "It's My Party" registers the lowest sale for a No 1 this year and lowest since Abba last August! P-RQJNYAR-c With 10 top ten hits to their name between 1966 and 1971 the Four Tops were one of Motown's best selling acts in the late 60s though they have been absent from the UK charts for 8 years. They've now left Motown (back in 1972) and are currently newly signed to Casablanca records, and to celebrate they find themselves back in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with "When She Was My Girl" 14-5 (63,000). zCrf-kxM3MM Blazing in 21-7 (48,000) come OMD with a third straight top 10 hit "Joan Of Arc". The single is a second release from their new album "Architecture and Morality" which hits the shops this week, as it's up against new releases from Depeche Mode and, more importantly, Adam & The Ants, its unlikely to be topping the charts in its debut week at any rate. UdYzkSeUt3I The Police move 6-3 (71,000) and could be under real pressure from the Four Tops and OMD next week for the No 1 spot, and that's not to mention Squeeze who leap 9-4 (64,000) but who won't have TOTP to assist them this week. Co-producer on that track Elvis Costello continues to creep slowly up the charts 8-6 (58,000) and the Human League re-appear at No 10 (39,000) they're back up a spot most likely after the publicity of grabbing the No 1 spot on the album charts. Two fallers to cover briefly, The Jam drop 4-8 (46,000) and the Tweets 5-9 (43,000) 1- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (73,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (73,000) 3- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (71,000) 4- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (64,000) 5- WHEN SHE WAS MY GIRL- Four Tops (63,000) 6- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello (58,000) 7- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (48,000) 8- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (46,000) 9- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (43,000) 10- OPEN YOUR HEART- Human League (39,000)

  23. 31ST OCTOBER Another week on top for Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin looked like a close run thing until the weekend when "It's My Party" created some clear blue water between itself and Altered Images "Happy Birthday" as the two tracks posted sales of 93,000 and 71,000 respectively. As Gaskin and Stewart lost 17% and Altered Images barely moved at all (but that was without TOTP exposure), a change of guard at the top next week looks likely. wijSH0RYDnI Causing a few raised eyebrows when it debuted at a lowly No 27 last week, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" shoots in the right direction this week to No 6 (57,000) for the Police. It's a bit of a quick 2nd release with their previous hit "Invisible Sun" which is only 6 weeks old and is still sitting at No 26 this week, there are reports the band have rush released the track after the relative failure at radio of the lead single, the official line however is that this track was released in Europe and US as the lead single from the album and the record label here are worried that imports will flood the market and harm its eventual UK release. Meanwhile parent album "Ghost In The Machine" drops 1-3 this week after 3 weeks of ruling the roost to make way for the Human League. aENX1Sf3fgQ Two years after "Up The Junction" and "Cool For Cats" both ended up in the runner spot, Squeeze are back with "Labelled With Love". It's the third release from "East Side Story" and is a slight surprise hit given the first two singles disappointed at No's 35 and 41, it's co-produced by a certain Elvis Costello who is himself struggling to make much headway this week moving 9-8 (49,000) but the B-side of the current Squeeze track is also attracting some attention. Entitled "Squabs on Forty Fab" it's a parody on the current medley fad being, as it is, a segued collection of their previous hits. It rises 19-9 (45,000) this week. FgihbuhkG30 Laurie Anderson fades as fast as she arrived proving rather a marmite hit as it retreats 2-3 (69,000) and is joined in the fallers by The Tweets 3-5 (57,000) but it does sell its 400,000 to recompense, and Toyah drop 4-7 (52,000). The Jam drive 7-4 (60,000) but don't look like troubling the top 2 unless something dramatic happens given that most Jam singles are now quite front loaded and the track barely increased in sales week on week, whilst Shaky can't progress beyond No 10 (44,000) though he does return to the No 2 spot on the album charts. 1- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (93,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (71,000) 3- O SUPERMAN- Laurie Anderson (69,000) 4- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (60,000) 5- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (57,000) 6- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police.(57,000) 7- THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS- Toyah (52,000) 8- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello (49,000) 9- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (45,000) 10- IT’S RAINING- Shakin Stevens (44,000)

  25. 24TH OCTOBER A whopping 5 new hits in the top 10 this week mean we have a lot to get through in this report. None of the new entries can deny a second week at the top for Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin who improve their weekly total to 112,000 and moves over the 300,000 mark since its release. FJCUIWrVPkw A fortnight ago Laurie Anderson was unknown in the pop charts though as a performing artist she was known in the art world. Taking inspiration from Massenet's 1885 opera "Le Cid", "O Superman" crashed in at No 18 last week and this week zooms to No 2 (93,000) championed as it is by Radio 1 DJ John Peel, it's certainly one of the more unusual tracks to make the top 10 this year- could it go all the way next week given Stewart & Gaskin are hardly leaving the field behind? At 8 minutes long it is now officially the longest track to be a hit, its eruption on the charts is due to the aforementioned Radio 1 plays which extended to Noel Edmonds and Kenny Everett and generated pent up demand for the track. Vkfpi2H8tOE Speaking of John Peel he's also partly responsible for the success of Altered Images, another band he has championed during his time. Lead singer Grogan may be just as famous for her role in this year's "Gregory's Girl" but that didn't prevent the bands first two singles failing to trouble the top 40 (though "Dead Popstars" did suffer the fate of an unfortunate release date in the immediate aftermath of Lennon's death). "Happy Birthday" however has no trouble making the band stars and duly catapults 16-5 (71,000) today. xP5C6yW9XVs A seventh track to debut in the top 10 this year "Absolute Beginners" is also the second one to do so for The Jam, equalling the achievement of Adam & The Ants. The title is taken from one of Weller's favourite novels by Colin MacInnes and is again a stand alone single though the band are back in the studio recording a new album for 1982 release, taking out of the equation imports and re-issues of their old singles this is the fourth consecutive official Jam single to debut in the big 10- the first time this has been done since Slade in the mid 70s. It debuts at No 7 on a sale of 58,000 JZ6rW5DXitg After three hits which failed to climb any higher than No 30 Elvis Costello & his attractions finally hit the mark again with a cover of a Country hit for Jerry Chesnut , "A Good Year For The Roses" which climbs this week 14-9 (58,000) and is from an album consisting of C & W covers "Almost Blue" which is released next week. 1hBWBVVFA4c Allen Toussaint wrote many songs under the pseudonym Naomi Neville (his mother's maiden name to circumvent a contract he'd signed) including famously Labelle's "Lady Marmalade", he also wrote a song called "It's Raining" (not the same Darts hit from 1978) which has now been covered by Shakin Stevens. After Debuting at No 40 a fortnight ago it sprinted to No 11 last week but this week moves just a spot to No 10 (48,000) proving that with his album top 3 this may be a single too far from the current campaign. KS6IWHTWwgo In other news Toyah are still moving northward 5-4 (76,000) to equal the peak set by "Four From Toyah") and the Human League hold at No 6 (60,000) as they sell fractionally more this week than last week but do enter at No 2 on the album chart. The Tweets give up the fight and drop 2-3 (81,000) with a nice sales increase thanks to TOTP but a week too late (popular thought is that sales split between it and the Electronicas version ultimately cost it the No 1 spot), and Godley & Crème tumble 3-8 (58,000). 1- IT’S MY PARTY- Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (112,000) 2- O SUPERMAN- Laurie Anderson (93,000) 3- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (81,000) 4- THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS- Toyah (76,000) 5- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (71,000) 6- OPEN YOUR HEART- Human League (60,000) 7- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (58,000) 8- UNDER YOUR THUMB- Godley & Crème (58,000) 9- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello& The Attractions (58,000) 10- IT’S RAINING- Shakin Stevens (48,000) Finally we say goodbye to Legs & Co on TOTP, they will still be dancing on the show but as part of a larger pool of dancers now called Zoo who will consist of both male and female dancers. The producers have stated that the current troupe of 6 ladies was too restrictive, they have been the regular outfit in the studio since 1976!.
