The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
Relatively- it was the 8th best selling album of 81, total sales of albums were 92 million in the year which was equivalent to 2013 approximately to give you an idea of size- not massive.

No sorry- no information on that one sadly- album figures pre mid 80s are virtually non-existent.

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
14TH NOVEMBER Celebrating their fourth chart topper today The Police are back on top with "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" which slips past Altered Images 3-1 (76,000) to become 1981's 16th No 1 hit, a marked come down from 1980 which recorded 24 in total, it was, in some respects, the last track standing as all other challenges appeared to fade. Altered Images meanwhile cling to No 2 spot though it loses sales at 67,000 as it faded through the week. RucEqvQf0ls Finishing fourth in the Eurovision song contest in 1970 Julio Iglesias has been recording albums in French and Spanish during the 70s and creating an not inconsiderable career on the continent and indeed is the biggest selling artist on CBS worldwide outstripping even Adam & The Ants in sales over 1981. Two years ago he signed a worldwide deal with CBS and began recording in English which has now yielded a top 10 single here, though the single itself is sung mostly in his mother tongue. "Begin The Beguine (Volver A Empezar)" sprints 21-7 (54,000) today and is a cover of a Cole Porter 1935 composition from the musical "Jubilee" and has been covered by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Liberace among others but never with this success in the UK charts. The former Real Madrid Goalkeeper is now a bona fide pop star- could it hit the back of the net? FcL2w0QAMAk Duets between big acts sometime hit the right vein, and this week "Under Pressure" sees Bowie and Queen combine and become the 11th track in 1981 to debut in the top 10. It enters this week at No 8 (43,000) to become Queen's 11th top 10 hit and Bowie's 15th, it started out as a Queen track with a working title of "Feel Like" but was re-written substantively with the help of Bowie who was due to record backing vocals for another Queen track which was subsequently scrapped. Incidentally Queen are No 1 on the album charts today with their "Greatest Hits" which doesn't feature this track, and holds off new albums by Adam & The Ants, Depeche Mode, OMD and another act who makes his top 10 presence felt today- more on that in a minute. a01QQZyl-_I Rapidly becoming pin ups thanks in the main to front man Nick Heyward, Haircut 100 are the new kids on the block in the chart world with debut single "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" thundering 19-9 (42,000) . The band only formed in its present line up last year and were signed earlier this year so things have happened pretty quickly in the grand scheme of things. fdrFTIjUZ68 Like Bowie, Rod Stewart is today enjoying his 15th top 10 hit with the lead single from his album of the same title ("Tonight I'm Yours)". The album debuts at No 8 with the single up 13-10 (40,000) to become Stewart's first top 10 hit in 3 years the longest absence from the top flight since his solo career began back in 1971. Stewart is also rumoured be funding the screening of his L.A show via satellite over here over the festive period in what is thought to be a first, and is currently in talks with the BBC over the project.. uvvdUjTjcKc So what's going on elsewhere in the top 10? The Four Tops climb 5-3 (65,000) and OMD follow suit 7-5 (60,000) whilst Squeeze hold at No 4 (62,000) but the big faller is Barbara Gaskin & Dave Stewart who topple 1-6 (56,000) the biggest fall since St Winifred's School Choir back in January this year. 1- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (76,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (67,000) 3- WHEN SHE WAS MY GIRL- Four Tops (65,000) 4- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (62,000) 5- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (60,000) 6- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (56,000) 7- BEGIN THE BEGUINE (VOLVER A EMPAZAR)- Julio Iglesias (54,000) 8- UNDER PRESSURE- David Bowie & Queen (43,000) 9- FAVOURITE SHIRTS (BOY MEETS GIRL)- Haircut 100 (42,000) 10- TONIGHT I’M YOURS- Rod Stewart (40,000)

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
7TH NOVEMBER One of the closest run weeks in chart history (and certainly in the 80s) sees both "It's My Party" and "Happy Birthday" sell virtually the same amount of copies to keep the top two on lockdown for a further week. In the end under 20 sales separated the two tracks with both songs recording a sale of 73,000 copies, that's a decline of 21% for Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart and a 3% increase for Altered Images, the two songs fought all week with an early slight advantage to Gaskin & Stewart being eroded over the weekend but both will be lucky to be in the running next week given those sales. In fact "It's My Party" registers the lowest sale for a No 1 this year and lowest since Abba last August! P-RQJNYAR-c With 10 top ten hits to their name between 1966 and 1971 the Four Tops were one of Motown's best selling acts in the late 60s though they have been absent from the UK charts for 8 years. They've now left Motown (back in 1972) and are currently newly signed to Casablanca records, and to celebrate they find themselves back in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with "When She Was My Girl" 14-5 (63,000). zCrf-kxM3MM Blazing in 21-7 (48,000) come OMD with a third straight top 10 hit "Joan Of Arc". The single is a second release from their new album "Architecture and Morality" which hits the shops this week, as it's up against new releases from Depeche Mode and, more importantly, Adam & The Ants, its unlikely to be topping the charts in its debut week at any rate. UdYzkSeUt3I The Police move 6-3 (71,000) and could be under real pressure from the Four Tops and OMD next week for the No 1 spot, and that's not to mention Squeeze who leap 9-4 (64,000) but who won't have TOTP to assist them this week. Co-producer on that track Elvis Costello continues to creep slowly up the charts 8-6 (58,000) and the Human League re-appear at No 10 (39,000) they're back up a spot most likely after the publicity of grabbing the No 1 spot on the album charts. Two fallers to cover briefly, The Jam drop 4-8 (46,000) and the Tweets 5-9 (43,000) 1- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (73,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (73,000) 3- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police (71,000) 4- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (64,000) 5- WHEN SHE WAS MY GIRL- Four Tops (63,000) 6- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello (58,000) 7- JOAN OF ARC- O.M.D (48,000) 8- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (46,000) 9- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (43,000) 10- OPEN YOUR HEART- Human League (39,000)

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
31ST OCTOBER Another week on top for Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin looked like a close run thing until the weekend when "It's My Party" created some clear blue water between itself and Altered Images "Happy Birthday" as the two tracks posted sales of 93,000 and 71,000 respectively. As Gaskin and Stewart lost 17% and Altered Images barely moved at all (but that was without TOTP exposure), a change of guard at the top next week looks likely. wijSH0RYDnI Causing a few raised eyebrows when it debuted at a lowly No 27 last week, "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" shoots in the right direction this week to No 6 (57,000) for the Police. It's a bit of a quick 2nd release with their previous hit "Invisible Sun" which is only 6 weeks old and is still sitting at No 26 this week, there are reports the band have rush released the track after the relative failure at radio of the lead single, the official line however is that this track was released in Europe and US as the lead single from the album and the record label here are worried that imports will flood the market and harm its eventual UK release. Meanwhile parent album "Ghost In The Machine" drops 1-3 this week after 3 weeks of ruling the roost to make way for the Human League. aENX1Sf3fgQ Two years after "Up The Junction" and "Cool For Cats" both ended up in the runner spot, Squeeze are back with "Labelled With Love". It's the third release from "East Side Story" and is a slight surprise hit given the first two singles disappointed at No's 35 and 41, it's co-produced by a certain Elvis Costello who is himself struggling to make much headway this week moving 9-8 (49,000) but the B-side of the current Squeeze track is also attracting some attention. Entitled "Squabs on Forty Fab" it's a parody on the current medley fad being, as it is, a segued collection of their previous hits. It rises 19-9 (45,000) this week. FgihbuhkG30 Laurie Anderson fades as fast as she arrived proving rather a marmite hit as it retreats 2-3 (69,000) and is joined in the fallers by The Tweets 3-5 (57,000) but it does sell its 400,000 to recompense, and Toyah drop 4-7 (52,000). The Jam drive 7-4 (60,000) but don't look like troubling the top 2 unless something dramatic happens given that most Jam singles are now quite front loaded and the track barely increased in sales week on week, whilst Shaky can't progress beyond No 10 (44,000) though he does return to the No 2 spot on the album charts. 1- IT’S MY PARTY- David Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (93,000) 2- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (71,000) 3- O SUPERMAN- Laurie Anderson (69,000) 4- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (60,000) 5- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (57,000) 6- EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC- The Police.(57,000) 7- THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS- Toyah (52,000) 8- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello (49,000) 9- LABELLED WITH LOVE- Squeeze (45,000) 10- IT’S RAINING- Shakin Stevens (44,000)

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
24TH OCTOBER A whopping 5 new hits in the top 10 this week mean we have a lot to get through in this report. None of the new entries can deny a second week at the top for Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin who improve their weekly total to 112,000 and moves over the 300,000 mark since its release. FJCUIWrVPkw A fortnight ago Laurie Anderson was unknown in the pop charts though as a performing artist she was known in the art world. Taking inspiration from Massenet's 1885 opera "Le Cid", "O Superman" crashed in at No 18 last week and this week zooms to No 2 (93,000) championed as it is by Radio 1 DJ John Peel, it's certainly one of the more unusual tracks to make the top 10 this year- could it go all the way next week given Stewart & Gaskin are hardly leaving the field behind? At 8 minutes long it is now officially the longest track to be a hit, its eruption on the charts is due to the aforementioned Radio 1 plays which extended to Noel Edmonds and Kenny Everett and generated pent up demand for the track. Vkfpi2H8tOE Speaking of John Peel he's also partly responsible for the success of Altered Images, another band he has championed during his time. Lead singer Grogan may be just as famous for her role in this year's "Gregory's Girl" but that didn't prevent the bands first two singles failing to trouble the top 40 (though "Dead Popstars" did suffer the fate of an unfortunate release date in the immediate aftermath of Lennon's death). "Happy Birthday" however has no trouble making the band stars and duly catapults 16-5 (71,000) today. xP5C6yW9XVs A seventh track to debut in the top 10 this year "Absolute Beginners" is also the second one to do so for The Jam, equalling the achievement of Adam & The Ants. The title is taken from one of Weller's favourite novels by Colin MacInnes and is again a stand alone single though the band are back in the studio recording a new album for 1982 release, taking out of the equation imports and re-issues of their old singles this is the fourth consecutive official Jam single to debut in the big 10- the first time this has been done since Slade in the mid 70s. It debuts at No 7 on a sale of 58,000 JZ6rW5DXitg After three hits which failed to climb any higher than No 30 Elvis Costello & his attractions finally hit the mark again with a cover of a Country hit for Jerry Chesnut , "A Good Year For The Roses" which climbs this week 14-9 (58,000) and is from an album consisting of C & W covers "Almost Blue" which is released next week. 1hBWBVVFA4c Allen Toussaint wrote many songs under the pseudonym Naomi Neville (his mother's maiden name to circumvent a contract he'd signed) including famously Labelle's "Lady Marmalade", he also wrote a song called "It's Raining" (not the same Darts hit from 1978) which has now been covered by Shakin Stevens. After Debuting at No 40 a fortnight ago it sprinted to No 11 last week but this week moves just a spot to No 10 (48,000) proving that with his album top 3 this may be a single too far from the current campaign. KS6IWHTWwgo In other news Toyah are still moving northward 5-4 (76,000) to equal the peak set by "Four From Toyah") and the Human League hold at No 6 (60,000) as they sell fractionally more this week than last week but do enter at No 2 on the album chart. The Tweets give up the fight and drop 2-3 (81,000) with a nice sales increase thanks to TOTP but a week too late (popular thought is that sales split between it and the Electronicas version ultimately cost it the No 1 spot), and Godley & Crème tumble 3-8 (58,000). 1- IT’S MY PARTY- Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (112,000) 2- O SUPERMAN- Laurie Anderson (93,000) 3- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (81,000) 4- THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS- Toyah (76,000) 5- HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Altered Images (71,000) 6- OPEN YOUR HEART- Human League (60,000) 7- ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS- The Jam (58,000) 8- UNDER YOUR THUMB- Godley & Crème (58,000) 9- GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES- Elvis Costello& The Attractions (58,000) 10- IT’S RAINING- Shakin Stevens (48,000) Finally we say goodbye to Legs & Co on TOTP, they will still be dancing on the show but as part of a larger pool of dancers now called Zoo who will consist of both male and female dancers. The producers have stated that the current troupe of 6 ladies was too restrictive, they have been the regular outfit in the studio since 1976!.

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
17TH OCTOBER Creating something of a vacuum at the top of the charts in its demise "Prince Charming" slumps 1-4 (61,000) this week and can thank its TOTP play for making that drop look respectable as it was on for 1-7 drop by midweek! The race to replace it was always between two tracks, The Tweets and Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin and again TOTP featured "It's My Party" and not "The Birdie Song" which saw its midweek No 1 position overturned quite dramatically by "It's My Party" which leaps jumped 8-1 (84,000) to become one of the years more unexpected chart toppers. P-RQJNYAR-c Four new tracks to liven up the top 10 this week starting with Toyah who leaps 13-5 (54,000) with "Thunder In The Mountains" a third straight top 10 hit for the group and incidentally has a video directed by Godley & Crème who continue the ascend with "Under Your Thumb" this week 4-3 (65,000) to create a notable week for them. The Toyah track is not available on their last album "Anthem" which contributes to its rapid climb (no Toyah track has been top 5 after just 3 weeks) as 1981 shapes up to be one to remember for the band. xltpyMkzdNo Parent album "Dare" is due next week, but already single No 3 is plucked from it and "Open Your Heart" explodes 21-6 ( 54,000) this week. Readers will note this is a "blue" single for the band denoting a "pop" release, but either pop or dance the group score a second top 10 hit on the trot. Incidentally with the Police and Shaky in the top 2 on the album charts it should be a real test to see if the band can compete with the big boys of 1981. bBI9zXQe0N4 With an ever growing fanbase Depeche Mode have been expanding In stature throughout 1981 with first hit "Dreaming Of Me" hitting No 57 and followed with "New Life" which went agonisingly close to the top 10 at No 11 this summer, but they wait no longer for a top 10 as "Just Can't Get Enough" trips into the big 10 moving 11-8 (47,000) and you only have to wait another month for debut album "Speak and Spell". -2YkK077SpE Bad Manners prove that the Ska revival isn't quite dead yet as "Walkin In The Sunshine" arrives 16-10 (44,000) and like its predecessor "Can Can" comes from their album "Gosh....It's Bad Manners" which also gets its release next week and will hope to follow Madness (their main rivals in the movement certainly since the implosion of The Specials) into the top 10. u9csSb-H9GE Two fallers complete the top 10, Ottawan slide 5-7 (49,000) and The Police hurtle 3-9 (46,000). 1- IT’S MY PARTY- Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (84,000) 2- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (73,000) 3- UNDER YOUR THUMB- Godley & Creme (65,000) 4- PRINCE CHARMING- Adam & The Ants (61,000) 5- THUNDER IN THE MOUNTAINS- Toyah (54,000) 6- OPEN YOUR HEART- Human League (54,000) 7- HANDS UP (GIVE ME YOUR HEART)- Ottawan (49,000) 8- JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH- Depeche Mode (47,000) 9- INVISIBLE SUN- The Police (46,000) 10- WALKIN IN THE SUNSHINE- Bad Manners (44,000)

The BMRB Years- The Top 10 Sales
10TH OCTOBER On a major charm offensive and with not much competition around "Prince Charming" holds top spot for 1 fourth week but it is now under pressure, it's sale of 106,000 shows how gentle a decline it is experiencing as its total sales move over half a million without seemingly suffering too much with the public. The band have now spent 9 weeks at the top of the charts this year. more than any other act and have confirmed they will be releasing a Christmas single- could the race be over already for the festive chart topper?, however it is probably their last week at No 1 and before moving on it's time to reflect on the YTD charts as we hit the 3/4 of a year mark! 1- STAND & DELIVER- Adam & The Ants 854,208 2- TAINTED LOVE- Soft Cell 780,600 3- THIS OLE HOUSE- Shakin Stevens 721,620 4- VIENNA- Ultravox 696,288 5- MAKING YOUR MIND UP- Bucks Fizz 685,692 6- ONE DAY IN YOUR LIFE- Michael Jackson 685,332 7- SHADDAP YOU FACE- Joe Dolce Musical Theatre 667,896 8- YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY- Shakin Stevens 630,108 9- GHOST TOWN- The Specials 605,232 10- BEING WITH YOU- Smokey Robinson 594,840 "Prince Charming" has sold 581,988 to date placing it at No 11 so far 9p__WmyAE3g The threat to Adam & The Ants ongoing reign comes from the Tweets as "Birdie Song" got TOTP exposure and shoots 7-2 (98,000) and it must be odds on to become the UK's No 1 next week- brace yourself! The expected challenge from The Police didn't come to be this week as "Invisible Sun" tumbles 2-3 (68,000) in the main due to the appearance of parent album "Ghost In The Machine" which slams into the No 1 spot today by an easy margin. Formerly both members of the folk outfit Hatfield and the North, Dave Stewart hit the charts earlier this year in tow with Former Zombies front man Colin Bluntstone on a cover of "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" peaking at No 13. Now he's back with the backing singer from his old group Barbara Gaskin on a cover of Leslie Gore's 1963 No 9 hit "It's My Party", as it rises 17-8 (61,000) it already surpasses the original peak wise. Rumour is that the pair are a couple in real life! wijSH0RYDnI In other news Godley & Crème continue to move in the right direction 6-4 (68,000), Madness move 10-7 (64,000) (the same position as their album enters at) but going in the wrong direction are Ottawan 3-5 (67,000), Alvin Stardust has had enough 4-6 (64,000) and OMD drop 5-10 (40,000) whilst Diana Ross and Lionel Richie hold at No 9 (60,000) in what a great week sales all around with only 8k separating numbers 3 and 9. 1- PRINCE CHARMING- Adam & The Ants (106,000) 2- THE BIRDIE SONG (THE BIRDIE DANCE)- The Tweets (98,000) 3- INVISIBLE SUN- The Police (68,000) 4- UNDER YOUR THUMB- Godley & Crème (68,000) 5- HANDS UP (GIVE ME YOUR HEART)- Ottawan (67,000) 6- PRETEND- Alvin Stardust (64,000) 7- SHUT UP- Madness (64,000) 8- IT’S MY PARTY- Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin (61,000) 9- ENDLESS LOVE- Diana Ross & Lionel Richie (60,000) 10- SOUVENIR- O.M.D (40,000)
