  1. Cool! This is really interesting. Thanks for posting this. I never realised the rerun chart was on the chart archive site! I remember the furore over this chart in '99 mainly by Blur's record company. Interesting that "Coffee and TV" still ended up at no11 anyway! Very interesting to see the differences between the published incorrect chart and the correct chart which has finally been made public some 16 years on. I remember Secret Smile was supposed to have been denied a Top 10 place by the glitch - as it turns out they missed out the Top 10 anyway! The big loser here is Dwight Yoakim who was denied of the Top 40 placing he should have rightfully had that week. As it turned out, he would never have a Top 40 hit ever again (and never had before), so missed out on his moment of glory of having his song played on the Top 40 by the chart mix-up that week. Also poor Tina Cousins! She should have had another Top 40 hit. And "Buses, Cars and Trains" was a great song and I remember it getting a lot of airplay at the time. I remember being confused when I realised it never made the top 75 when I first used Polyhex and thought it was never actually released in the UK. But now it turns out it made no65! Interesting, on the other hand, to see some of the demotions, like Celine Dion, Lauryn Hill & Savage Garden. Interesting question about whether these should be considered their proper new peaks -in my own opinion, they should but as far as officially, I don't know. Isn't it true that when there were similar mix-ups with the chart in '94 and '95 and the wrong chart was read out on the Sunday, a new chart was compiled some time during the week and this became the "proper chart" replacing the previous Sunday's chart. This never happened with the 1999 chart for whatever reason.
  2. I would imagine that "Empire State Of Mind" by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z would probably be a good candidate for 2009? And maybe Aloe Blacc's "I Need A Dollar" for 2011, and Nicki Minaj's "Starships" for 2012 (just off the top of my head)?
  3. Thank you very much Riser :)
  4. Oops! You're absolutely right, it was indeed Icona Pop who knocked "Blurred Lines" off no1 initially, and then John Newman came along, before Blurred Lines returned to the top! Think I'm getting a bit rusty in my recollections of last year's no1s! Can't believe I forgot about Icona Pop getting to no1, considering that was one of my favourite songs last year. I remember that when IKAG made no1, it was in an era where a lot of songs like "Mercy", "Now You're Gone" were having +4 week consecutive runs at the top and it seemed like the norm again and that it was going to happen a lot in the future. So it's pretty surprising that 6 years on no song has managed to match IKAG's 5-week consecutive stint at no1 (those that have spent 5 or 6 weeks at no1 have been non-consecutive). Somebody That I Used To Know and Someone Like You are great songs!
  5. It's good to see Jessie J back and being a contender for next Sunday's no1! Oh yes, and I was absolutely thrilled that "Take Me To Church" by Hozier finally broke the UK Top 40 last night. I have been raving about this song for almost a year to anyone who will listen and telling them how amazing it is! It was a massive hit here in Ireland, and I hope it will replicate its success in the UK and climb really high. I will be watching its progress on the live updates with interest!
  6. OK, first of all how on earth has it been SEVEN years since "Bleeding Love" and "Umbrella" had their epic runs at no1! Where is the time going to at all! It's scary! Forgot that "Blurred Lines" had five (non-consecutive) weeks on top last year, would have been six if John Newman's "Love Me Again" (excellent song!) hadn't made no1. I totally agree that streaming will enable the return of long-runners at no1, it may take a couple of years, but I'm fairly sure it will happen. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think "I Kissed A Girl" was the last song to spend more than 4 consecutive weeks at no1?
  7. Ooh, just noticed this thread. Could I get the link as well, please? Thanks a mill :)
  8. ^ Agree about Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers". It was a huge hit over in Ireland, got massive TV and radio airplay, got to no2 in the Irish singles charts, but never charted in the UK. Going back to the early 2000's, Gigi d'Agostino's "La Passion" was another massive hit in Ireland, did really well in the Irish charts, but never charted in the UK either. How about "Fallen" by Lauren Wood? It was on the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack, you still hear it quite a lot these days on the radio, it's seen as a classic, but it never charted in the UK either, which is a real shame. It's a gorgeous song. And it technically did chart (but only JUST, reaching no74 - thanks Polyhex!), but "Stem" by DJ Shadow. What an amazing piece of music! You still hear it used loads as backing music/in advertisements.
  9. Very interesting list, thank you for posting! It's just come back to me how gutted I was at Tori Amos's "A Sorta Fairytale" missing out at no41 in 2002. I loved it the moment I heard it (really nice video too!) and thought it would give her another Top 40 hit for the first time after a few years. Sadly it wasn't to be. I remember being disappointed listening to the Top 40 and there being no sign of it that Sunday, and then being rather galled later on finding just how close it had come!! "Invisible" by Tilt and Zee is a real dance classic from 1998, shame it just missed out on a Top 40 place by one position! "Run This Show" by Kat deLuna was everywhere around its release date, it seemed to be on the music channels all the time and was a very catchy song. I was predicting it to be a big hit, and was really surprised that it only reached no41! Going back in time to the 80s, shame about "Hip To Be Square" just missing out at no41. Also I had forgotten about it, but this list just reminded me of how disappointed I was by Bob Dylan missing out at no41 with "Must Be Santa" in 2009. It would have been great to see Bob Dylan back in the charts with a new track after so many years, and with a brand new Christmas track, but it was a pity he missed out by just one place.
  10. Ooh thanks, I didn't know that, I must check that out on the Radio 1 player! Great to see Hozier's doing promo in the UK. Hopefully this will propel Take Me To Church higher up the chart :cheer:
  11. Very good choice of avatar - I like! Been here 3 years and still haven't gotten myself an avatar - need to sort that out! Oh, the video to "Take Me To Church" is superb! There's wonderful imagery in it. I've been in love with this song for a few months myself, haven't gotten sick of it at all like I sometimes do with songs I initially love, in fact I just love it all the more! Great to see it continuing to climb in the recent updates! The spreading of the gospel of Hozier seems to be doing the trick
  12. Would love to see both those tracks climb the chart asap! Love that you have Hozier as your avatar pic btw, spreading the awareness of this great artist and song ^_^ I fell in love with "Take Me To Church" when I first heard it in Ireland a few months ago, still love it! Fantastic musically and a great message in it too. Agreed - it should be way, way higher! It's been no2 in Ireland and I'd love to see it replicate that success in the UK charts. If it doesn't chart this week, I hope its chances won't be over, and that it'll have the potential to climb over the coming weeks.
  13. Great to see Hozier continuing to climb significantly. :cheer: According to the new release schedule on Buzzjack, this song was released as a new release this week. I hope it will manage to climb the chart more in the coming weeks and that it will break the Top 40 (and then climb really high!), and that it just won't peak this week. It really deserves to be a big hit. Would be great to see Sara Bareilles land a second Top 40 hit... Can't believe it's been 6 years since "Love Song"!! It was one of my favourites at the time, and I still love it
  14. Totally agree with the comments about "Take Me To Church" by Hozier - absolutely fantastic song with a great message, and one of my favourites at the moment. It's been a huge hit in Ireland, in the upper end of the Irish chart for months on end, and I would love to see it take off and become a big hit in the UK too - it really deserves to.
  15. I had a feeling that would be the case. Technology had moved so far forward by 1997 compared to the '80s! Thanks for the reply Suedehead.
  16. Robbie, Suedehead, Graham and DanChartFan - you've all made great points as to why the charts could have been held back for publication on a Tuesday prior to Oct '87 even though they were compiled on a Sunday. Going a little further on in time (and sorry if this is going off topic btw), but on 31st August 1997 when the chart show was cancelled due to the death of Princess Diana, was the chart still actually compiled that Sunday? Or did they wait until the Monday instead to compile it? I do know they also delayed the Christmas 1988 chart by a day since Christmas Day fell on a Sunday, but they have compiled the chart on Christmas Day if it was a Sunday in subsequent years.
  17. Thanks for the replies guys, some very interesting information there!
  18. I read the May 1987 article from Record Mirror that Robbie has referred to above, which was a very interesting read. Funnily enough, even though the article stated that by that point the charts were compiled on Sunday but not published until a Tuesday, another article in the same magazine stated that the publication of that week's charts (w/e 9/5/'87) were delayed by a day due to the early May Bank Holiday (so they weren't published till the Wednesday, I assume, though they were compiled on the Sunday). I wonder why they still needed to wait an extra day to publish that week's charts even though by then (May '87) the charts were compiled on Sundays? I don't know, maybe there were still some extra checks they needed to carry out before the charts were officially announced? Or maybe it was still traditional at that point to hold back the charts for an extra day after a Bank Holiday, even though the charts had been ready since the Sunday evening? Also, I wonder when acts would have discovered that they were number 1 - would it have been Sunday evening upon compilation of the chart, or would they have had to wait 'til the Tuesday also when the charts were actually published (I'm referring here to more the '85 to Oct '87 era)? Or maybe even the Monday in between?
  19. Merril Bainbridge reached the top 75 in 1996 with "Mouth".
  20. Thanks Zenon, I knew it was somewhere around Sep/Oct '87 that the charts switched to being compiled on a Sunday, but wasn't sure of the exact date - thanks for confirming it was actually Oct 4th Donnah
  21. Hi Seanster, Yep, Oct '87 sounds right, so that's when Gallup were able to start compiling the charts on a Sunday ready in time for broadcast by the Sunday evening
  22. Hi Robbie and Highlander, Thank you both for your answers - you're mines of information! :) And also thanks Robbie for confirming. So from '83 to '87 the charts gradually became available earlier on a Monday 'til they were able to finally reveal a brand new chart for the first time on a Sunday evening by 87. Things really were different in the days of compiling the chart pre-computers! Donnah
  23. Thank you both for your replies. :) Donnah

  25. Hi everyone, New member here *waves* :cheer: I’ve been a long-time lurker but have only just decided to sign up. This may be a strange question, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the chart compilation date pre-1987. I was living in Ireland at the time and was only a child in the ‘80’s so I never actually listened to the UK Top 40 back then. I know that, from what I’ve read on the Internet, that the charts used to be revealed on a Tuesday morning/afternoon I think. Does anyone have any idea when the chart was actually compiled before it was ready for broadcast, and when the chart was actually finalised before broadcast on the Tuesday? I presume in those days, before computers sped up the process, the actual compiling of the chart probably didn’t start til a Monday? Does anyone know when the compilation of each week’s chart would have been completed – would it perhaps have been compiled late on a Monday or maybe early on a Tuesday? Or was it a really long process that took more than 24 hours? I know that in Ireland, in the pre-Internet days of the early/mid 90’s, the charts were compiled on a Friday afternoon/evening but were not revealed til the Irish radio’s chart show on a Saturday afternoon, almost 24 hours later. So I’m just wondering if it was something similar in the UK pre-1987. Also, was it true that following a Bank Holiday the announcement of the charts (pre-1987) used to be delayed until Wednesday? If anyone can shed any light, I’d be very grateful! BTW, I look forward to sticking around here! Donnah :)
