Normally I post these on another forum and occasionally here and I generally do one month of charts per topic. As this is the last chart of May, if I post 7th June it will go in its own topic. And please reply to it, I stopped posting these here because nobody replies to them, although everyone else's seem to get replies. Every 3rd week there is a youtube video playlist associated with the chart. The most recent one was for 17th May chart and the next one will be next week, and the video show covers any songs in the top 40 that either were not on the previous one or are still climbing. This is supposed to be songs you didn't know were covers until recently. With regards to Elvis Presley, one I discovered recently is "Are You Lonesome Tonight" which dates back to about 1927, has verses and no silly talking bit about the world's a stage.

That's news to me, she has always said her name as being pronounced "Titch". I will have to wait now until the end of the 3 weeks to watch the new video. I do find a lot of her promotion a bit overdone - the same thing posted every hour or so. I don't know if it's an excited 19 year old girl doing it or her management team. I have met her on 2 occasions though and she is really sweet.

"Artist not writing the song" is not the same as "cover version". By the way, David Bowie's "China Girl" was not the first recording of the song although he did co-write it. Iggy Pop, with whom he co-wrote the song, recorded it before him. But it's difficult to classify a song as a cover if it's one of the writers performing it. Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell II (Back Into Hell)" album contained only 4 original songs. "I'd Do Anything For Love" and "Objects In The Rear View Mirror" which were 2 of the 3 singles were both among the originals. Many of the others appeared on Jim Steinman's album "Bad For Good" which was originally intended as the follow-up to Bat Out Of Hell but Meat Loaf had vocal problems at the time and couldn't record the songs. Jim Steinman wrote a new set of songs instead which became "Dead Ringer" and gave the songs to session musicians to sing (Rock N Roll Dreams Come Through was a minor hit in 1981, credited to Jim Steinman, but he didn't sing on it, Rory Dodd did the vocals). A couple of the other songs were on the 1989 album "Original Sin", credited to Pandora's Box (but also a bunch of session musicians put together by Jim Steinman, including 4 different female singers, one of them being Ellen Foley who had recorded the female vocals on Paradise By The Dashboard Light). (Good Girls Go To Heaven and It Just Won't Quit were originally on that album, as well, of course, as It's All Coming Back To Me Now).

Yes they have, although they didn't write them. There was a songwriting team in Sweden who wrote a lot of their songs especially for them. Just to pick one: please research if you can find anyone who recorded "Flying Without Wings" before they did.

Ok, let's clarify: The original of "Killing Me Softly With His Song" was by Lori Liebermann. So the fact you didn't know that means it is little known who did the original. She wrote the song after seeing Don McLean perform the song "American Pie". Roberta Flack covered it and made it famous, the Fugees covered it later on. The original of "Without You" was by Badfinger, covered by Nilsson and later Mariah Carey. The original of "The Only Way Is Up" was by Otis Clay, made famous by Yazz & The Plastic Population. Someone mentioned "Piece Of My Heart" - interesting as Erma Franklin's version (she didn't write it but was the first to record it) was a top 10 hit in the UK in the 1990s. She is Aretha's sister and recorded it in 1967. Janis Joplin's version was a year later. "Nothing's Going To Change My Love For You" was originally recorded by George Benson, and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" by Kelly Gordon (who didn't write it). As "A Groovy Kind Of Love" was originally by the Mindbenders, it meant that 4 consecutive number one hits in 1988 were cover versions, although only one of them was a hit for its original artist.

thanks for the replies. Those last few were from the first chart in the topic, there has been a new chart with more entries. My spotify chart lists have not gained any followers. Perhaps we should start a separate topic for spotify users to share links to their playlists?

From your list, we don't have many in common in our chart, but I recognise most of those names from being in the UK chart. Demi Lovato and Olly Murs did also get into my chart. Robin Thicke had two songs on my playlists in 2007 and 2008 but neither charted. Imagine Dragons did have a hit in my chart with "It's Time".

I see you like the 4 Eurovision ones. On first viewing I also had Belgium among the leaders but that didn't make it after being on my playlist too. I have met her on 2 occasions. She is very sweet and talented. "Breathe In Breathe Out" was a #1 in my chart for 6 weeks earlier this year.

It's a great boyband song. It's energetic, and laddish. And they wrote it themselves. I'd rather have this kind of boyband songs than all the manufactured stuff (JLS etc). And one of them plays ukulele.

The easiest way for us to be able to "listen" to each others charts is to share spotify playlists. (That will work for those who have spotify). I put my latest chart into one every week and it gets updated so if people "subscribe" it will be easy. Mine is a top 100 but you can always copy in just a few of the songs, and a few from other people's charts into one of your own, then listen to that and keep the ones you really like to put into your own chart.

By the end of the year I was a bit tired of "Common People" it had been so overplayed. 1994: Pulp - Babies. 1993: Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love (the only time the same as the UK #1 of the year) 1992: Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy. Yes really. Seems everyone thinks now this is twaddle, and perhaps it is a bit, but at the time I was crazy about this song and it topped my chart for 7 weeks. 1991: James - Sit Down 1990: Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens 1989: Guns N Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine. Credited for this year although it first reached my chart in 1988. But this was the "full" version. 1988: Fairground Attraction - Perfect 1987: Marillion: again unsure of the song being Incommunicado or Sugar Mice. Incommunicado was clearly the bigger "hit" in my chart, 5 weeks at #1 compared to 2 for Sugar Mice. 1986: David Bowie - Absolute Beginners 1985: Colourfield - Thinking Of You 1984: Giorgio Moroder & Phillip Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams 1983: Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 1982: ABC - All Of My Heart 1981: Hazel O'Connor - Will You 1980: David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes, but on occasion Air Supply - All Out Of Love was listed as year #1. It was difficult to decide, again both songs totally different. 1979: Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Oliver's Army. Incredibly "Girls Talk" by Dave Edmunds was in 2nd place so Elvis Costello wrote both of the top 2. (We've sen other years where an artist had the top 2 or 3 of the year). 1978: Meat Loaf - Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Not a single release in the UK, but obviously an album track. In the US this was a single. My #1 of all time. I'm sure you know it even though it wasn't a hit single. (I think Glee Cast may have got this song into the top 75, they definitely recorded it). My top actual UK single release of 1978 was "Rat Trap" by the Boomtown Rats. 1977: Queen - We Are The Champions 1976: John Miles - Music. I didn't do a weekly chart in 1976 but that song was my clear favourite of the year. Going back any further would just be retrospective, even if I picked Bohemian Rhapsody for 1975 (it isn't if I allow album tracks, I like other songs more from A Night At The Opera).
