I think at that point, the instant grat songs couldn't chart at all until the album was out!

It felt more clinical and lifeless, from the set to the judging line-up (Torvill and Dean are just not compelling personalities, it was better when they were mentors as opposed to judges). The list of winners since the revival is slightly depressing too. I don't know if Miles from Looking for Alaska is misunderstood as such, perhaps he is initially by some of the characters, but I definitely relate to him more than any other character. The autism traits are very identifiable and Charlie Plummer's performance only strengthens how likeable and naive Miles is.

Sam Bailey's cover of Skyscraper came to mind. Some of the X Factor covers have merit to me but that one always felt like a vastly inferior version of one of Demi's best songs, performed without anywhere near as much emotion. Also the last couple of X Factor finalist singles (I found the first couple quite nice but it went downhill quickly and the quality wasn't there, it was just the hype of the show, and the fact Wishing on a Star tacked on JLS and One Direction... )

I'd argue the lack of ACR is what really ruined the 2016 charts! It'd be just the same now if not worse without ACR (not that we need another debate about ACR) At least Hot Hits UK did springboard new hits, I've not always been huge on how it could make or break a hit but it really does feel like so little is breaking through this year.

It doesn't rely on general knowledge which is already a more accessible concept, easy to play along with friends to make it extra competitive, and Lee Mack makes for a hilarious and engaging host too.

This is a good point - it's notable for being the only S Club single without a Jo solo at all!

It's held in high regard by those who have watched but it mostly seemed to fly under the radar

Not the Elton comparison Old Phone definitely isn't performing particularly well so far, not to say it can't recover. I agree it's much too soon for single 2, especially when there's still a long way until the album release! Guessing the plan is to get at least 3 streaming hits established to buoy the album's streaming figures beyond the curiosity streams on week 1 (though Old Phone doesn't look like it'll be much use on that front so far).

I know typically those who have viral hits struggle to get follow-ups, but let's not forget that four of Alex's five charting hits actually made the top 100 in their first week of release (Before You Leave Me debuted top 100 in its second week of release) so he's obviously been building a following already. Burning Down even debuted top 40, so I'd be shocked if his next release didn't chart at all. I think the idea of him dethroning himself is probably unlikely, on debut at least, though it's not impossible. Even Please Please Please "only" debuted at #3 (Sabrina's best debut position, until Taste of course) after how huge Espresso had become, albeit on sales of 78k but that says a lot about the sales landscape of early to mid 2024! I'd say whatever comes next will probably need some sort of viral presence already to come anywhere near #1, certainly in terms of a debut, but I'd be gobsmacked if it didn't chart at least top 40.
