134 The Unquiet Dead Series 1 Episode 3 Doctor: 9th Companion: Rose Tyler First aired: 9th April 2005 Writer: Mark Gatiss Finally, an Eccleston episode drops! The lowest ranked episode of the era is the modern show's first trip back to the past. The Doctor takes Rose to Victorian Cardiff, where they bump into Charles Dickens as the gaseous Gelth creatures possess corpses. It's an episode that provides some strong character moments for the Ninth Doctor and Rose, who were both new to us at that point; the Doctor shakes Dickens into shape, while Rose lends an ear to servant Gwyneth, a clairvoyant who the Gelth later use as a gateway. There's an interesting moral debate in the episode which I really like, surrounding the Gelth's need for bodies, and their use of human corpses, though the episode can be a little slow in parts. Nevertheless, the corpses are creepy and I really liked Simon Callow's portrayal of Dickens, and how he came through at the end to rescue the Doctor and Rose. Some of the CGI looks highly dated now but that's easy enough to look past. A solid episode, and this being my least favourite Eccleston episode speaks volumes of how highly I rate series 1 in general! Only series 4 and season 2 have still yet to lose any episodes.

135 Night Terrors Series 6 Episode 9 Doctor: 11th Companion: Amy Pond, Rory Williams First aired: 3rd September 2011 Writer: Mark Gatiss I've actually bumped this one up a few spots as I've been going along as it felt harshly low, but this feels quite right for what's ultimately a solid episode with no strings attached. Taking a break from the arc-heavy episodes of series 6, Night Terrors revolves around George, a terrified young boy whose nightmares have become real. Daniel Mays stars as Alex, George's dad, and is one of the best guest stars of series 6 as a desperate father who doesn't know how to connect with his son, and we see a tender side to the Eleventh Doctor when dealing with both George and Alex, which I love. Amy and Rory are largely separate from the Doctor as they get trapped in a giant doll's house, and there's some good mystery and spookiness to this episode. I think the resolution comes around a little too quickly, and George himself isn't the best of actors, bless him! I remember being quite relieved at a more "normal" Doctor Who episode in series 6 at this stage, though the lack of any real connection to the arc does mess the pacing of the whole series up slightly (also applies to other episodes the same way), and it feels a little swamped by the couple of episodes that followed immediately after, but it's a solid outing and a good example of "bread and butter" Doctor Who.

136 Kill the Moon Series 8 Episode 7 Doctor: 12th Companion: Clara Oswald Also featuring: Danny Pink, Courtney Woods First aired: 4th October 2014 Writer: Peter Harness This episode's a pretty interesting one - most people either love or hate it, and there's some really divisive scenes and narrative choices throughout. The Doctor takes Clara and her student Courtney Woods to the moon in 2049, which already sounds like a major safeguarding risk as someone who works in a school (!), but Courtney makes for a surprisingly insightful presence throughout the episode, providing the most "human" takes in an episode full of debate. The space shuttle on the moon, led by Captain Lundvik, is set to destroy it, with an increase in its gravity having a catastrophic impact on the tides on Earth. Ultimately, the Doctor leaves it up to Clara, Courtney and Lundvik to decide what happens to the moon, and he leaves in the TARDIS, much to Clara's fury. I think this is a bold character decision and adds a lot of insight into how harsh 12 can be, particularly in these early days of his era. I don't say that like it's a bad thing, either - it's a clear moment where we remember that the Doctor is an alien, and sometimes, his worldview can be quite different to that of his companions. As for the moon ultimately being an egg, I think it's a little daft; Doctor Who's never been against daft ideas, but this is certainly pushing it and I can absolutely see why it was an issue for some, particularly when the most obvious analogy would be abortion, where this episode takes a curious pro-life stance...! That aside, my main gripe with the episode is the spiders, which seem to act as the monster of the week for no real reason beyond an actual visible threat for the casual audience to latch onto. I think the episode somewhat wastes time in actually getting to the interesting debate. Nevertheless, I like how the events of this episode ripple across the rest of the series, from Clara's anger and eventual forgiveness, to her lying to Danny about continuing to travel with him, and how that all plays into the series finale.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
137 Once, Upon Time Series 13 Episode 3 Doctor: 13th Companion: Yasmin Khan, Dan Lewis Also featuring: Inston-Vee Vinder, Bel, Fugitive Doctor, Karvanista, Sonya Khan First aired: 14th November 2021 Writer: Chris Chibnall I find this episode quite cool in a way. It's the type of concept you could only do in a serialised tale like Flux was, because there's actually not much of a plot here, yet somehow it kind of works. In the Temple of Atropos, the Doctor jumps into the time storm and hides Yaz, Dan and Vinder in their pasts to save their lives and defeat Swarm and Azure. The result is a curious concoction of trippy, semi-realistic flashbacks for each companion, albeit with a series of incorrect details. Yaz is haunted by a Weeping Angel, Dan relives a conversation with Diane, and we learn about Vinder's past encounter with the Grand Serpent. Meanwhile, in her own timestream, the Doctor learns about her own past as the Fugitive Doctor. There's some good backstory in these scenes, particularly for the Doctor in terms of advancing the Timeless Child storyline and building towards the later confrontation with Tecteun, and also for Vinder who we knew little about before this episode. In order to explore these backstories, though, the actual narrative has to come to something of a halt, so this episode feels a little like treading water. That said, I think this is where the Grand Serpent works the best, and I think he should really have stayed as part of Vinder's backstory in this episode only, rather than appearing out of nowhere in Survivors of the Flux later.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
I think Smith sadly had the most inconsistent run, there's a lot of brilliance to be celebrated higher up the countdown but there's some real shaky moments too! Absolutely none of that reflects on Smith himself, or 11, who I love as a Doctor, his portrayal was a bright light even through the weaker episodes. I do find Moffat as a showrunner/writer (given the intense editing the showrunner gives the majority of scripts) almost seems to get a new lease of life as Capaldi arrives, the quality becomes much tighter for series 8 (generally). Also worth saying that I'm already comfortably into episodes I find enjoyable/good! It's splitting hairs to rank many of these, there's only a very small number that I don't really like so much. After all, Doctor Who's not my favourite show for nothing, so even if an episode drops out at this stage, it's still one where there are more elements I enjoy than elements I don't! The Impossible Girl storyline as a whole wasn't too bad, I actually didn't mind the timestream being the explanation for how it came about in the first place, just a few loose ends weren't tied up. I do believe the arc came at the expense of a more developed personality for Clara, though. She finds her feet more almost immediately after, and especially when Capaldi's on board (also another reason why it feels like Moffat got a new lease of life around the time series 8 was being developed)!- 3Quency - Top Down

138 The Name of the Doctor Series 7 Episode 13 Doctor: 11th Companion: Clara Oswald, River Song Also featuring: Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint, Strax First aired: 18th May 2013 Writer: Steven Moffat The finale to series 7 somehow felt less than the sum of its parts. There was a little too much going on that it didn't connect very well together, nor feel quite as fleshed out as it should. The Doctor and Clara end up on Trenzalore where they're confronted by the Great Intelligence, keen to disrupt the Doctor's timeline and cause chaos across the universe. There are many elements to this episode that I really like - for starters, the "conference call" between the Paternoster gang, River Song and Clara was a genius concept and Strax never fails to make me laugh. Trenzalore at this point in time looks quite interesting and there's some nice ideas and visuals, though it's sadly not explored that much. River's role in the episode is touching and brings her arc with the Eleventh Doctor to a fitting close. I don't really think much of the Great Intelligence as a villain here, though. I feel like the threat hadn't been seeded that well despite The Snowmen and The Bells of Saint John involving it to at least some degree, and there's no real sense of conclusion to the storyline - Clara follows the Great Intelligence into the Doctor's timestream, but how does that put things right? What happens after? And, most frustratingly of all, how do the Doctor and Clara escape his timestream at the end? It feels unfinished and messy, but there's a lot to enjoy on a scene-by-scene basis.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
139 The Church on Ruby Road 2023 Christmas Special Doctor: 15th Companion: Ruby Sunday Also featuring: Carla Sunday, Cherry Sunday, Mrs. Flood First aired: 25th December 2023 Writer: Russell T Davies I had really high expectations for Ncuti Gatwa's first episode as the Doctor following how much I enjoyed the 60th anniversary specials, so my excitement was sky high for Christmas Day 2023. The Church on Ruby Road brings together the Fifteenth Doctor and his first companion, Ruby Sunday, a foundling brought up by her foster mother Carla. I think there's some fantastic character moments in this episode, a true strength of RTD's, which makes Ruby feel personable from the start. The scenes with Davina McCall were silly but fun, and there's a definite camaraderie between Ruby, Carla and the indomitable Cherry (someone get her a cup of tea damn it!), not to mention the immediate chemistry between 15 and Ruby. I find the goblins a bit ridiculous and it strays too much into fantasy for my liking, even if I like the Doctor's more methodical, scientific approach to understanding the goblin ship. The goblin song, well, it's catchy, but as soon as 15 and Ruby start singing, I can't help but cringe, I'm sorry! I'm no musical lover at the best of times! The twist of Ruby disappearing made for a great contrast, enhanced by Michelle Greenidge and Angela Wynter's fantastic acting and the darker lighting of the Sunday flat, though I don't really like the resolution - the Doctor impaling the Goblin King and then the ship just vanishing, but why? What happened? It does build the mystery of Ruby's mother well, though, and I like that the events of this episode come into play later down the line, even if the eventual outcome isn't so thrilling. As for Ncuti in his first full episode, he's fantastic as you'd expect! Hits the ground running with a charming, charismatic and emotive portrayal of the Doctor and he and Millie Gibson go a long way in elevating this episode.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
Thanks for the catch-up there Calum Honestly I'd have loved a "normal" 10 episode series of 13, Yaz and Dan, I think it would've been a fun dynamic and I think Flux was when Chibnall was starting to get into the swing of things! A series in 2022, with The Power of the Doctor as the finale (or Christmas/New Year special), before leading into the 60th in 2023 would've been so good.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
140 The Ghost Monument Series 11 Episode 2 Doctor: 13th Companion: Yasmin Khan, Graham O'Brien, Ryan Sinclair First aired: 14th October 2018 Writer: Chris Chibnall Jodie Whittaker's second episode in the lead role set the tone somewhat for her era. Stranded on a barren planet, the Doctor and her new fam must navigate a race to the Ghost Monument which turns out to be the TARDIS. The scenery of this episode is gorgeous, and Jodie's on top form from the start. I also liked seeing the initial reactions of the companions, and there's some nice character moments between them as they navigate their first alien planet. The pacing of the episode is very slow though, and no real threat arrives until the second half of the episode, with the sniper bots proving to be nothing more than a hurdle, and the Remnants only really featuring near the end. The connection to the Stenza (Tzim-Sha's race) doesn't really come to anything so not sure why it was necessary, could've been any planet. I think I'd appreciate this episode more if it wasn't one of a few slow episodes in series 11, but this one makes for a pleasant watch regardless.- The Kid LAROI - SHE DON'T NEED TO KNOW

Rachel's HOH was a triumph even if Lauren looked to throw a spanner in the works, this is what happens when you mess with Rachel Reilly and thank god Rylie's gone~ I'm here for the Judges alliance and it's redeeming Morgan significantly in my eyes, I'm glad she seems a little less attached to Mickey, they brought out the worst in each other. Veto Spoilers Mickey won veto, Vince was torn between Katherine and Rachel for renom, think we got very lucky as it turned out to be Katherine...! Full credit to Rachel, Ashley, Morgan and Mickey for working Vince hard to keep Rachel safe. 141 Closing Time Series 6 Episode 12 Doctor: 11th Companion: Craig Owens Also featuring: Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song First aired: 24th September 2011 Writer: Gareth Roberts Back when series 6 aired, I remember finding the aesthetic of the series really dark. Almost every episode had a grey or black colour palette, it appeared, so an episode like Closing Time stood out to me with its brighter colours and camp tone. Having dropped Amy and Rory home, the Doctor stops off to see old friend Craig Owens en route to his death, and ends up being roped into electrical disturbances in the area and gets a job at a department store, which has been infiltrated by Cybermen. I actually quite enjoy Craig as a character despite him being James Corden, it was cool to see him play more of an active companion role this time round, and there's some good comedy between him and the Doctor, also involving Alfie (or Stormageddon x), it's just what series 6 was in need of! That said, I think the Cybermen were absolutely wasted in this episode. It was cool to see a Cybermat again but the Cybermen themselves were pretty much useless and it could've been any villain in their place really. The "love saves the day" resolution was pretty corny too, and I'll be honest, I've never been a fan of the idea of Cybermen just encasing your body in a suit of armour like they were doing to Craig - I think it takes away the sheer horror of the procedures involved in an upgrade (but obviously they weren't going to do that to Craig...!). It's ultimately quite throwaway, but I do find it pretty fun to watch and it's an episode I'd happily rewatch if I want to watch something light.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
I think Space Babies being the opener to season 2 may have been less of an issue, it's just that Ncuti's first season opening with such a light, silly episode probably wasn't setting the right tone for the rest of the run.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
143 Space Babies Season 1 Episode 1 Doctor: 15th Companion: Ruby Sunday Also featuring: Carla Sunday, Cherry Sunday First aired: 11th May 2024 Writer: Russell T Davies My last minute switcharoo bumped this down a place, below 42, but I enjoy Space Babies more than much of the fanbase going by the cesspit that is Twitter. Kicking off Ncuti Gatwa's first full series as the Doctor, it set a fun, camp tone much like RTD's premiere episodes did first time around. The Doctor takes Ruby into the future, landing on a spaceship to find talking babies, but also the source of their nightmares: the Bogeyman. The chemistry between 15 and Ruby was strong from the start, their energy was contagious and they're so watchable together. I really like Golda Rosheuvel as guest character Jocelyn (aka NAN-E) too, though I do find the voices of the babies to be a little poorly delivered which takes me out of an already silly illusion. I was quite invested in the plot and I like that the Doctor does what he can to save the Bogeyman after learning about its creation, it was a suitably compassionate move. I can see why this episode feels a little frustrating given the shorter episode order of season 1, meaning this relatively light episode could have replaced by something meatier, but I like a bit of silly escapism and that's all this episode is. The editing does bother me though - cutting the use of Push the Button from the jukebox leaves a gaping hole in the dialogue that comes later! 142 42 Series 3 Episode 7 Doctor: 13th Companion: Martha Jones Also featuring: Francine Jones First aired: 19th May 2007 Writer: Chris Chibnall The first episode Chris Chibnall contributed to the Whoniverse is a pretty run-of-the-mill episode. 42 was Martha's first trip in the TARDIS after being invited aboard long-term, at last, by the Doctor. It sees the duo fighting to save a failing ship on the cusp of falling into a star, but when captain Kath McDonnell's husband Korwin roams the ship on a rampagne, incinerating people with his eyes, the Doctor is horrified to discover that star they've been harvesting for fuel is actually alive. It's a pretty standard "base under siege" style story, with a great claustrophobic feel despite the vastness of the ship. Martha and Riley being trapped in the escape pod makes for a touching character moment and some great breathing space to explore Martha's relationship with her mum, and the twist about the star being alive is pretty interesting. Otherwise it's quite a standard episode, some of the guest cast are dispatched in very quick succession, leaving only McDonnell, Riley and Scannell to get any real development. It feels a little too similar to The Impossible Planet in some regards, particularly as it only arrived a year later, but I find this episode decent enough in its own capacity. 144 Can You Hear Me? Series 12 Episode 7 Doctor: 13th Companion: Yasmin Khan, Graham O'Brien, Ryan Sinclair Also featuring: Grace O'Brien, Sonya Khan First aired: 9th February 2020 Writer: Charlene James & Chris Chibnall Companion development was something I was desperately craving during series 11 and 12. A packed TARDIS team of three new companions, in addition to a new Doctor, was an ambitious move from Chris Chibnall at the start of his tenure, and unfortunately their character development often felt like the last priority. Can You Hear Me? earns its place in this era of the show for tackling some of that development, even if it was too little, too late. We learn about Yaz's battle with her mental health during school, see the effect of Ryan's absence on his friend, and Graham confronts his fear of his cancer returning. Individually, all of these feel like important moments, but when this is right near the end of Ryan and Graham's tenure, it feels insignificant, and Yaz's story is never referenced again despite her sticking around. The actual villains, Zellin and Rakaya, two of the Eternals, were a little forgettable, but some of the imagery around Zellin near the start was quite spooky. The Doctor's role in the story actually feels less significant and the Aleppo parts make the story feel a little disjointed. I think the episode as a whole would feel more essential if the companion development actually had any real impact on the long-term story. Oh, and the Doctor's reaction to Graham opening up about his cancer fears is the single worst bit of writing the show's had...! No criticism for Jodie who I love but I think the Doctor's response basically being "I'm socially awkward soz" is a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. The Twelfth Doctor would often say the wrong thing, but when it came to it, he would do his best to support his companions, even if he had to use Clara's cue cards. The fact the Doctor was written to not even try to give Graham some words of wisdom is baffling! A stain on an otherwise pleasant episode.- Joseph ranks every Doctor Who episode (2005-2025)
