I think Axel Blake was the last winner I actually liked oops

I was talking about when the tour started - there was a significant uplift in his catalogue at the time on both Spotify and Apple, I posted about it here at the time as Electro said. Of course it's subsided a bit now but for artists with big followings, the start of a tour is very beneficial and a sign that bigger things will come when the tour hits the UK. Tours can be helpful to current single choices too - Satellite was only as big as it was for Harry because of the tour happening at the same time I'd say (could be beneficial to Dance No More in a few weeks, hopefully anyway).

Many of his songs had a boost from the tour beginning despite it not being in the UK yet

It was a great performance I thought! Very Alesha-centric but that makes sense for a BGT performance I suppose.

Ooh yes this one feels like a possible exception to the rule, though I suppose her chart success was dwindling before A Star Is Born happened whereas Ariana's wasn't before Wicked! Her subsequent films haven't had any impact on her chart career though.

Ha, we made a similar point at the same time! I didn't see negativity towards them but Ariana has been very present in the media for quite some time now, burnout and fatigue is very much a thing in music.

Has Wicked actually increased her star power, though? She was already one of the biggest popstars on the planet so I don't see why it would impact on her music career, is there any precedent for this otherwise? Don't recall Harry Styles getting any increased attention on his music because of his acting credits (however well they were received). In fact, I'd argue her strong media presence since the last album could actually be negatively impacting her - we've seen that affect the likes of Ed Sheeran where if you don't give people time to miss you, the interest reduces as people are simply bored of you! (which, conversely, explains yes, and? having a higher debut as Ariana had been away for some time) I feel like unfair expectations are being set, and this happens every time a big name releases! All we really have to go off is past debuts, that's the only factual barometer we have to compare to. Ultimately, Ariana's debuts are probably more consistent than any other popstar I can think of over the past decade and that's something worth commending.

She's 13 years into her chart career now though, what growth are you expecting? Quite honestly I think it's remarkable that she's getting similar opening numbers to a lead single from 2018 - how many other artists are capable of that?

Yet it's entirely in line with most of her other comparable lead singles?

Yeah a rubbish winner but I am somewhat relieved it wasn't Sonny or Celestial (both felt way too calculated in terms of striking a chord with the audience the entire way through). Favourites tonight were Rafferty (magicians are beginning to grate on me but he's very likeable and I prefer his kind of magic to Fabian's spectacle), Anastaciia & Salsa, Sadeck Berrabah & LMA (by FAR the best dance group this show's had in years) and Liwei Yang. Ted was funny again but I preferred his last two performances to tonight's one, and Matty sounded great as usual.

Any predictions of 900k+ were laughable given the context of Ariana's previous debuts! 568,941 fits quite nicely into this list, with yes, and? being a notable outlier given it was her first proper new release in over three years.

Not this before we've even had a single Spotify update for it...!

This Week's #1 Single The Runarounds Bleachers and new top 10 hit Arrhythmia (I Hope You Stay) First #1 hit for American boyband The Runarounds, made up of (left to right in the above picture): Jeremy Yun (lead guitar), William Lipton (lead vocals and guitar), Axel Ellis (lead vocals and guitar), Zendé Murdock (drums) and Jesse Golliher (vocals and bass guitar), though Jeremy has since departed the group, and music in general, to focus on his studies. The Runarounds were formed by Outer Banks creator Jonas Pate with their own TV show in mind, which launched on Amazon Prime last year. Despite the fictional show, they are a real band outside of the show, and their TV show features their own original music Charting songs Ghosts, Beautiful Stranger and Cellophane are from the TV show soundtrack, as well as Arrhythmia (I Hope You Stay), which also has its own single version released by the band outside the show. Chasing the Good Times and this week's #1 hit Bleachers were not featured in the TV show. Bleachers is the biggest #1 this year so far on play counts, with 103 plays from Monday to Thursday only! The Runarounds are the second artist of the year to make their chart debut at #1 in both the singles and albums charts, following Cavetown.
