49 Mummy on the Orient Express Series 8 Episode 8 Doctor: 12th Companion: Clara Oswald Also featuring: Danny Pink First aired: 11th October 2014 Writer: Jamie Mathieson We return to series 8 for the first time in a while with a concept that was teased three series earlier, in the closing moments of series 5 finale The Big Bang! We finally visit the Orient Express (the space version) as the Doctor takes Clara on what is supposed to be one final trip. When they arrive, they find a passenger has been killed by a mummy that no other passenger could see. There's some really fantastic concepts in this - the mummy that you could only see if you're its next victim is a chilling idea, and the mummy, aka the Foretold, has a fantastically gruesome design. I really like Frank Skinner as the ship's engineer Perkins, definitely one of the most memorable side characters of series 8. This episode also highlights one of the strengths of series 8 - the continuity and consistency is the best of any Moffat series, in my view, as we don't forget about Clara's anger towards the Doctor from the end of the previous episode (Kill the Moon), and actually explore it further. Between that and the pure scientific approach of the Doctor and the other assembled experts aboard the train, this episode ticks every box, and is the third highest episode from series 8.

Artist of the Year: Knox Surely no surprise after he nabbed this year's top album, but Knox also finishes 2025 as my favourite artist of the year. The arrival of his debut full-length album was where his pop-rock sound slotted into place, perfectly channelling the early 00s in a remarkably consistent project. It's unusual for an album to stick with me for such a long time, but between them, tracks from this album have notched up 7 weeks at #1, 53 weeks top 10 and 217 weeks top 40, and that's with three of the album's tracks not even making my top 40! Lots more to come on some of the individual songs later, so I picked one of my favourite album tracks to link below, A Heart Still Breaks (incorrectly titled in the YouTube video lol). I also got to hear much of the album live, as mentioned before, but beyond that, it was also really fun to hear some of Knox's older tracks too, such as Sneakers and Dumpster Fire, the latter being a song I sent to BJSC a few years back. A remarkable year for Knox, and this definitely won't be the last we hear from him in this thread.

Live Artist of the Year: Delta Goodrem I was able to attend loads of great gigs in 2025, but one of my most anticipated was particularly special. To celebrate 20 years of her second album, Delta toured Mistaken Identity with two London shows, and nothing would've stopped me attending - it's one of my favourite albums of all time, and my personal favourite of Delta's. From seeing her live shows, I'd heard a very small handful of the album live, but being able to hear the full thing, from start to finish (albeit in the Australian tracklist order and not the European one I'd grown accustomed to ), was a magical night. From the drama of the title track, to the beauty of Be Strong and Last Night on Earth, it was perfect. An encore of Delta's hits from other eras was the cherry on top. Crazy that it's been over 20 years with such a breathtaking album but this was the best way to celebrate, and is my concert highlight of 2025.

For context, I was 9 when series 1 aired! Given the nature of some of the episodes (episode 2 very particularly), I understood their decision I was allowed to watch the pre-watershed edited versions of series 2 (the only series they did it for, removed the swearing/gore/etc but it was a lot tamer than series 1 anyway) and of course did watch series 1 eventually, then 3 and 4 as they aired. Series 3 (Children of Earth) is a masterpiece IMO, one of the greatest things I've ever seen on TV. 2's largely good as it learns from the mistakes of 1, but 1 isn't without merit, it's just a bit tryhard at times and struggling to find its tone. 4 ends up a mess despite the cool concept sadly.

50 Utopia / The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords Series 3 Episode 11-13 Doctor: 10th Companion: Martha Jones, Captain Jack Harkness Also featuring: War Master, Saxon Master, Francine Jones, Clive Jones, Tish Jones, Leo Jones First aired: 16th, 23rd and 30th June 2007 Writer: Russell T Davies The only official three-parter in modern Who history wasn't initially advertised as being so. After a pit stop in Cardiff where Captain Jack clings to the outside of the TARDIS, the Doctor and Martha, as well as a newly resurrected Jack, are thrown to the end of the universe, where what's left of humanity is hoping for a new beginning in Utopia. There's already lots of greatness about Utopia, and it's actually the strongest individual episode of the trio in my opinion, as we get a glimpse of all that remains of civilisation on the planet Malcassairo, as well as the other known lifeform, the cannibalistic Futurekind. It's great to catch up with Captain Jack, especially as, at that point, my parents hadn't allowed me to watch Torchwood! Derek Jacobi is excellent as the doddery Professor Yana, and even more excellent when the twist arrives and he opens the fob watch - the Master is back! Utopia leading directly into The Sound of Drums was genius, and this episode kept the momentum going well I think. John Simm plays the insanity of the Master really well and he has great chemistry with David Tennant, and there's some really harrowing scenes too - the gassing of the cabinet! The Doctor, Martha and Jack hiding in the shadows was another cool aspect, and it allowed for some great character moments, such as the Doctor talking about Gallifrey, and Martha's immediate reaction to her family being taken in. The finale is probably the least good part, but I don't mind the conclusion - it makes sense in terms of the Archangel network, though the Doctor being de-aged so easily was a bit daft. That said, this episode was a home run for Freema Agyeman, who played Martha at her strongest and most determined, travelling the Earth solo for a year, and then the immediate effect of this - travelling in the TARDIS and pining after the Doctor wasn't for her anymore, and she left the TARDIS in the most dignified way. An epic run of episodes even though it's the lowest placed RTD1 finale!

Best Music Video: Benson Boone - Mr Electric Blue We were done dirty with music videos during the American Heart era, with both Sorry I'm Here for Someone Else and Mystical Magical having their music videos weirdly made into lyric videos with text over the top, meaning the only proper music video we got was Mr Electric Blue. I'll save the complaining about how this is only seemingly getting a single push now, over six months after its music video release, because the video itself is heaps of fun. Complementing the energetic nature of the track, Benson pokes fun at himself, with a t-shirt saying "one hit wonder", a "moonbeam ice cream" van, and selling (very tight) jumpsuits. It's a great display of Benson's sense of humour and the awareness of the brand he's created for himself, and let's be real, he looks great while doing it. Beneath it is a slightly damning look at the industry, even if it's decorated heavily with comedy!

Group of the Year: dearALICE The art of the pop group feels somewhat lost in the streaming era. At least, in western terms. Since Little Mix's hiatus and Why Don't We's split, there's only been flashes of western pop group success, even on a small scale. The Vamps have slowed down and 5SOS have released less regularly than they used to, and as far as new groups go, there are few around. Enter dearALICE, whose early days were documented on Made in Korea: The K-Pop Experience, a docuseries that followed their K-Pop style training. 2025 brought their "proper" arrival, with debut single Ariana early in the year, followed by an EP and also their very first tour. While success hasn't really found them yet, dearALICE are showing there's stuff to be learned from K-Pop groups, with energetic routines and introducing rap into their otherwise very poppy music, best evidenced in Drums, a fan favourite single from the EP. It's been really fun following a boyband again, and I'm excited to see what they'll bring to the table in 2026. It was also great to see them live, and meet them!
