Mistajam standing in for Greg on R1 Chart Show for 6 weeks
He's the best thing since Simon Bates & should present the show permanently. Greg James sounds like he's on Student radio & as chart host is pretty awful.

OCC - biggest seller of every year
biggest single of 1970 was In The Summertime not Wonder Of You (Pick Of The Pops Top 50 of 1970, 27/12/70).

OCC: Best Selling Songs By The Beatles and Elvis Presley
I don't really know why they bother with these lists. Where do they get their info from? During the 1960s, record charts were not based on sales of any kind. Shops supplied the big music papers with lists of 50 records that were selling in that particular shop. The music papers (themselves) took up to 200 charts from various shops across the UK & Ireland & added all those shop charts together to create their own top 100s. Devil In Disguise only shipped a little over 300k in the 60s. The above list suggests 590k. Gaining some 290k in 45 years It's Only Love sold 272k, during 1980. This list suggests 580k. Where has 308k extra come from? It's not even a well known song. The Beatles list fulls apart for the non-inclusion of the Twist & Shout E.P. (selling 650k in the 60s alone) & 5 years ago 'A Hard Days Night' was at 9. Now its 17. Quite mind boggling.

1980s & 1970s Selling Singles
1969 (BMRB x17) It has to be said that BMRB (in the early years 1969 - 1971) didn't often meet their Panel sales targets. Many shops were not included in the Panel. Woolworths did not participate until 1975 for instance. So, many sales were judged out of sync incredibly in comparison to shipments. Not easy to go further back than 1969. As before then all charts were made by taking indivudual top 50s, from various shops & averaging out the positions & put together a big chart. No sales figures were ever used by the NME, Melody Maker, Disc, Record Mirror, Record Retailer or the BBC. 01 Archies - Sugar Sugar p 792 in1969 (979,000 in full) 02 Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys p 910 in full 03 Fleetwood Mac - Albatross 794 between 1968 & 1973 04 The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother 243 in 1969/70 (713,000 between 1969 & 1988) 723,000 with the 1982 re-issue 05 Frank Sinatra - My Way 660 between 1969 & 1972 675 with a 1994 CD single 06 Scaffold - Lily The Pink 228 in 69 (630 across 68/69, 650 with re-issues in 1973 & 1977) 07 Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town 407 in 1969 (600 in full) re-issued in 72/77 as an E.P. & 1981/84, the 1984 issue had "Lucille" as it's B side 640,000 with all the re-issues 08 Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine 618 between 1969 & 1986 (650,000 shipped) 09 The Beatles With Billy Preston - Get Back 535 in 1969 (565 by 1976 Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys p 557 in 1969 10 Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'Aime... 1980s & 1970s Selling Singles
1970 (BMRB x17) It has to be said that the year end charts printed in the music press in 1970, were all based on chart performance & not panel sales or any sales, come to that. Though Radio 1 & Radio 2, did feature the BMRB top 50 sellers in it's Pick Of The 1970 Pops. They managed to pack 50 records into a 2 hour show. It told us that Mungo Jerry was easily the biggest seller of the year. Then, all those music magazines & papers, told us that Elvis Presley was the biggest chart performance of the year, but they didn't. No. They tried to say he had the biggest seller of the year & he did not. Overall a dodgy year, as the shipments really out weigh most panel sales. 01 Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime 693,000 (625,000 according to shipments! 1980s & 1970s Selling Singles
1978 (BMRB x20) By the way the Radio One chart of the year in 1978, covered the w/k ending dates 14th Jan - 16th Dec 1978. Strangely & unusual the other chart of the year that appeared covered 14th Jan 78 to 6th Jan 79 (but of course didn't include the missed 30th Dec 78 week). This seems to be the only occasion when BMRB covered, a near full year i.e. 51 weeks. Why was Sunday 4-7pm Picked.
Hi Robbie. Network Top 30 started on 3m in 1984. Peaking at 5m in 1987. It never surpassed it. Radio 1 were on 10m in 1988 & that figure more than halved in the next 10 years. The Pepsi Chart aka Neil Fox, boasted overtaking Radio 1 in 1994. Radio 1 overtook again in 2004, when Independant Radio split shows i.e. Hit40UK, The Smash Hits Chart (Mark Goodier/Robin Banks) & The A List (Melanie Sykes etc). In general, Indepedant Radio have been quite constent between 5 & 2m. Radio 1 have a lot to answer for, with a loss of 9m in 15 years. Possibly ageism on Radio 1 is a contender in all their output on all shows, as well as Top 40. Though don't forget some dreadful presentation/production. I remember Simon Bates expressing his concern in 1978, that Tom Browne had some 3m more listeners than he. Bernie Andrews handed Simon, ITV viewing figures for the April 1978 period. It was indeed Robert Powell's fault.
