Download sales are in terminal decline but they will have a bigger influence on the chart if the streaming ratio is increased. The only logic in that is if the value derived from a stream has reduced. I suspect it has not and they're doing this to breathe some life into a static singles chart. It's going to make year on year sales comparisons more difficult and possibly unfair. This time next year the popularity of streaming might be such that we're back to square one anyway.

Shocked at this news. Hope Mark makes a full and speedy recovery. Mark presented the chart show in a very professional, unbiased and enthusiastic style. It hasn't quite been the same since he left in 2002 (I think!). But things change with the times. And not always for the better.

21 is the album that made Adele, it is still selling and it is better than 25. I think 21 will always be Adele's biggest seller, not that it really matters. I don't think she will be too bothered either way!

I voted "miss" which is maybe harshly premature. I work backshift every Friday night so I have to record it and listen after I finish work. Sundays suited me much better. Greg James is a decent host. His heart seems to be more in it than Clara. The fact that they played the top 25 suggests lazy production and perhaps radio 1 doesn't care enough about the chart to be bothered selecting songs from 40-26? I would be a bit miffed to have a new entry at no.26 overlooked then immediately play a track at 25 which has already been around for 10 weeks. I remember when Wes hosted the chart ~2003 and they did a "continuous countdown" from 40-21 (I think) but they always played every new entry and selected others. The way I see it the OCC are trying to talk up the new Friday chart but there's no getting away from the fact that Radio 1 have pretty much halved the time they devote to it once you include the news bulletins. I remember listening to the chart ~1992 and they stopped for a very short news update at 4.30. But that was a 3 hour show with every track played in full.

I agree with you; sales figures don't lie. The biggest factor in their decline is streaming. But what about 10-15 years ago when it was not unusual to see 13/14/15 new entries in the top 40. If only 9 new tracks entered the top 40 it was considered a light week. Granted some of these new entries plummeted quickly. Today 5 new entries a week is considered the norm. This must be a factor in the decline of sales. As for albums, people just can't be bothered with them. Why pay £10 for 9 tracks, 6 of which you don't really like. Generally speaking, only the hardcore element of an artist's fanbase will buy their album. The casual listener will stream or download the best 2 or 3 tracks. You could argue that the Christmas period is an exception to this, but even then sales are decreasing.
