Surprise Hits that never saw coming
Feeder- "Buck Rogers"- After ten single releases and two EP's alongside two albums, it looked like this band would be destined to stay as a top 30 singles act with blink-or-you-might-miss-it top ten albums, and low billings on the Reading/Leeds main stages. All of a sudden they launched this supposedly daft rock song which shockingly infected the Radio 1 A-list (I love the song, but was expecting another number 20-30 hit and a B-listing), and the band suddenly shot into mainstream radio awareness, with appearances on virtually every TV show in existence. The single made the top 5, and they became the popular British rock band they are today, despite somewhat odd snubs by the radio 1/2 playlist controllers, which seen 2008 album "Silent Cry" become an undeserved relative sales bomb :(. Wiley- "Wearing My Rololex"- After a series of singles charting at positions like number 46, and many others below the top 40, it became a sudden suprise he charted at number 2 with this song. Snow Patrol- "Run"- Between 1997-2003 this band looked destined to be criminally ignored. Three albums both falling short of the top 75 by a long mile, and a batch of singles all with three figure chart placings, it looked like this band would be doomed to small toilet venues forever. However they had an ace up their sleeves, and suddenly caught radio controllers attention, and then the public's with this heart felt single which I still think is their best, that charted in the top 5 and it all went on from there, turning "Final Straw" from an undeserved flop, into a million seller. I bought the album in 2003, and never thought people would pick up on this song.

Elbow Win Mercury Prize
The only track on this album that is any good is "Grounds For Divorce", the track sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the rest. I did own this album, based on PS's 9/10 review, but sold it soon after. Even if this album was a steaming hot pile of $h!t, it would still get rave reviews. Why on earth goes Guy Harvey in the GFD video repeatedly bang on the table a pint glass of beer EVERY TIME the chorus kicks in!!?.

That was a great quote, but he was definetly average with that "King of the Road" rendition  .

OMG!!! :w00t:, he REALLY DOES think he's something brilliant. He's just like a real-life version of that guy Barry Castle on that YouTube mockumentary "The Barry Factor".

That t*** who thought he was 'The greatest singer in the universe" is the biggest pr*k going. We NO WAY will be hearing from him again, no matter how many times he says it. - How do you think it went? - Brilliant - I know you'd say that.

If BHS&A still was in publication...........
I think the size of the chart did kinda make up for it tho, therefore not having tons of 25 weekers.
-
If BHS&A still was in publication...........
Yeah it was :), I made a top 500 of all time myself for 1952-2006, as there was no book in 2007 either. It's in the chart reference library somewhere :).

Anyone else fed up...
and Wes Butters even played Funeral For a Friend once, even though the single went 19-38!. I'll never forget the number of times they played "Umbrella" as opposed to Rhianna's most recent hit at the time!.

If BHS&A still was in publication...........
would the top 500 of all-time they used to publish based on chart weeks, be irrelevant these days due to the slown-down nature of the chart due to downloads, meaning tons of songs spending ages on the chart?. I think they would probably move away from using a top 75, and only count weeks on the top 40 or top 20 for ranking purposes from 2007's charts onwards, or maybe move away from using the ranking altogether.

Anyone else fed up...
What makes the slow chart more annoying, is the fact Fearne and Reggie seem to play the ones that stay around for ages for weeks and weeks on end, rather than playing the songs that have not been in the chart for long.

Anyone else fed up...
You've hit the nail on the head there, it's made the singles chart really meaningless now.

Artists to never have a UK No.1
I see nobody has mentioned Feeder yet. 24 hit singles and 8 hit albums, with 2 of those reaching the runner-up spot. They still are one of the most consitently sucsessful chart acts this century tho. Billy Fury hasn't been mentioned yet has he?.

Independent Number Ones
They didn't 'sell out' to EMI, they knew that label have an impressive track record of promoting and releasing compilations, with a decent sales record in response to the promotion. Because of EMI's promotion and distribution, they paid 50 grand per slot for a TV advert, which helped the album become Feeder's most sucsessful and first one to have a consistently strong chart run. "Silent Cry" did very well to chart at number eight with zero airplay and publicity, the only magazine feature before the albums release was Grant in 'Total Guitar' magazine in a guitar shop. The album only has not reached the silver certification mark because Echo are in serious financial difficulty (despite "The Singles" making a 2 million profit), and spent very little money on promotion and marketing as a result, EMI should have been involved again methinks. I bet very little people on here knew they have new single out, and it's only a download with no CD single due to Echo's money problems. The album faced many delays after recording wrapped in November 2007, a friend of mine spoke to Mark Richardson (drummer), and sounded very frustrated at the situation as Echo was up for sale at the time, but the sale fell through (Echo rejected EMI's offer). If that sale happened, who knows what would have happened to this album :(. Anyhow the future is going to be bright again, Universal/Mercury have approached their management about a 3 album deal!!.

Selling some CD's on behalf of a friend!
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZmarc_bowen He's quite strapped for cash after paying up for Reading, so is currently clearing some stuff out, and I offered to help with any CD's he liked to sell :). All the CD's have offers welcome with free postage, just thought you lot on here would like a look :).

Sugababes - New Album Flop/Hit
The original was by Ernie K-Doe, originally recorded in 1970, it only made No43 despite all the promo on the Boots advert. This version is even worse, and at first looks like they're taking the pi** when it's serious.

Feeder- "Tracing Lines" video
I quite like this, uses surreal 3D camera effects :), and the band are shown to have a bit of a laugh with the video. http://channelbee.com/move/ Click on the top left video!.
