The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Jay: Does every uptempo need to be turned into a ballad tonight? Most of the males this year are interchangeable. I'm so bored by most of them. That said, I liked the dramatic part at the end.

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Only The Young: Got good once it got going, but nothing noteworthy. Hope they do something more contemporary next week (they obviously couldn't with this week's theme.) Jay closing? :manson:

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Stevi: Doesn't do anything that previous novelty acts haven't already done and I find him pretty boring as far as novelty acts go. This performance was no exception. Hope he doesn't last too long.

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Paul: Complete filler. Next. Doesn't help that he sang one of the most boring songs in existence.
-
The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Chloe: This year's Janet Devlin / Abi Alton. Decent but she's basically a one trick pony and I can see myself getting bored of her by the half way point. Also, her personality comes off a bit.. fake. :/

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Jake: Too boring at the beginning and the song was just too big for him.

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Lola: Good vocals but pretty poor song choice.

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Stereo Kicks: MUCH better than last week. It was kind of fun. But an 8 piece boyband just doesn't work for me. And the chorus sounded bland; just like last week. There's no range.

Lauren: A bit slow, but I really liked it. The best so far tonight.

The X Factor 2014 • Live Show 2
Andrea really didn't do anything for me. It sounded like "Stay With Me"; added with strained trying too hard vocal gymnastics. Meh.

Lilly Wood & The Prick & Robin Schulz - Prayer In C 2 weeks at #1 in 2014 (#2 of 30 for '14) fiore9Z5iUg I really don't know how to tag this song, but I'll go with this. There's just something about this guitar riff. I can't get enough of it. Robin's production is in the same vein as "Waves", which might seem a bit uncreative, but I love it just the same. Much like "Waves", it's pretty atmospheric. The drums add to that. It's a bit relaxing in a way. But it's actually not relaxing at all because the entire production is a complete stark contrast to the lyrical content. Warm production mixed with lyrics that are cold as ice. The narrator is utterly angry and frustrated. It's especially shown in her vocals which are so strained and hostile. She's seeing all the tragedies that are going on in the world and it's making her, as well as the innocent victims from said tragedies, lose faith in God for allowing these things to happen. Constantly saying "Don't think I/they could forgive you" at the end of every stanza. Even going as far as to say "Don't think you can forgive you"; implying that even God won't forgive himself. It's such a cold lyric. This is definitely an interesting song. I think "you didn't send me no letter" is her way of saying that God won't answer her prayers. Structurally, this song is more like a poem; and there really is no chorus. 44. Cheryl (Cole) - Call My Name [2012] 43. Eminem feat. Dido - Stan [2000] 42. Nelly feat. The Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme [2004] 57 / 55. The Prodigy - Breathe [1996] #56. Ella Henderson - Ghost 2 weeks at #1 in 2014 (#3 of 30 for '14) tA8AfQaUnXM When Ryan Tedder produces songs for others, he tend to utilise the same tricks for the most part. There's the big anthemic explosive chorus. There's usually a heavy use of percussion. Usually notable piano. "Ghost" follows a pretty similar formula to those songs; such as: "Bleeding Love" (as well as Leona's "Take A Bow" and "Happy"), "Halo", "Battlefield", "Already Gone", "Strip Me", "I Was Here", "Rumour Has It", "Not Over You", "So Good", "XO", "Wings" (Birdy), OneRepublic's own "Good Life", "Something I Need" and "Love Runs Out"... and those are just the ones I remember (or I'm familiar with.) But it's a winning formula no matter how many times he's done it. He knows what he's doing. "Ghost" is a bit different because it has this whole tribal thing going on in the production with the backing vocals (as well as the heavy percussion I mentioned earlier.) And I love this production. "Love Runs Out" uses this tribal thing too (new trend maybe?) What also makes "Ghost" great is that Ella's voice is spectacular. I love when she sings that "I had to go through hell to prove I'm not insane.." line. She's proof that winning X Factor can be overrated and waiting 2 years has been good for her. This song is about someone (or something) overpowering her and she's trying to break free from it. I think it's about an abusive relationship that Ella's character was in. She didn't see what was going on for a while but her friends and family did. When she finally accepted the truth she "had to go through hell to prove she wasn't insane". And her going to the river to pray is her moment of desperation for this nightmare to finally end. This guy and/or what he's done to her is still haunting and hurting her and she's not capable of moving on yet. I'm not sure what makes the river so significant. But maybe I'm just overthinking that part. The video shows a different story but I won't get into that. I really like the line "Had to meet the devil just to know his name", even though I'm not really sure what she means by that.

Paloma Faith - Changing 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#5 of 30 for '14) oAeotgCHL3E 3 new entries in the top 100! I can't get enough of this song at the moment so its ranking might be a bit skewed by that. I didn't really like this or "Nobody To Love" at first. I guess because drum n bass doesn't have a lot of variety to it and Sigma didn't seem vastly different from Rudimental. But both songs grew on me in a major way. The production in "Changing" is stellar. It feels very big and theatrical. Right from the haunting chants at the very beginning. The verses are a bit lowkey (which lets Paloma really shine) and it all explodes in the drum n bass chorus. And with violins throughout. I tend to like violins in songs like this (it's also partly why I love Chase & Status' "Blind Faith".) And then that chorus climaxes with the "go-oh-oh-oh-oh" chant which feels sort of anthemic. Oh and Paloma does a flawless job on this.
