Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass 2 weeks so far at #1 in 2014 (#15 of 30 for '14) 7PCkvCPvDXk This song amuses me for some reason. I don't care about "skinny shaming" stuff since I don't take this song seriously in the first place. Though I think Meghan actually does take this song seriously and is trying to convey a message with it. I have no problem with inspiring self esteem boosts to her fans, but really this song is just too novelty to be an inspirational anthem. Especially when you have lyrics like this. "And all the right junk in all the right places", "'Cause every inch of you is perfect; From the bottom to the top", declaring that she's "bringing booty back", and of course "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night". That last one is pretty cringe though, I will admit. But all in all, it's just a fun song to me (though I'll probably get sick of it soon.) "I'm all about that bass; bout that bass, no treble" is a comparison to sheet music where the bass clef is fat and the treble clef is skinny. It's an interesting line. I find the video amusing too. I like the old doo-wop sound of the song; it's something different. But the chorus is really repetitive and there's not even a bridge which makes it even more repetitive.

Cheryl feat. Tinie Tempah - Crazy Stupid Love 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#16 of 30 for '14) H8tS5UQmNQM Speaking of sax loop breakdowns. It sounds like a toy with a horn sound that's run on batteries, but those batteries are dying. It's a signature part of this song, and at first I found it weirdly addictive, but then it annoyed me and almost ruined the song for me. Now I'm not really sure what to think of it, but I'd rather them not be there at all. I'd possibly rank "Crazy Stupid Love" ahead of "Promise This" at least if that was the case; but instead it's Cheryl's weakest #1. And maybe her weakest single overall. I like the clapping beat in the verses though. It sort of reminds me of that Lumidee song and "Pon De Replay". The chorus and the "la la la la la la la love"'s are catchy and it's a danceable song. And Tinie's rap makes me laugh ("My tongue wagging when you wiggle", "She had my D; Now she dickmatised", etc.)

Iggy Azalea - Problem 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#17 of 30 for '14) iS1g8G_njx8 I said in the "Bang Bang" entry that I haven't been overly impressed with Ariana and I'm really at a loss as to why she's even a thing. Her voice aside, she just seems so average to me and I find her rather plastic without any star quality or personality in her music. Do not get the all the internet hype. Granted I only know a few of her songs, but still. "The Way" is just Mariah Carey-oke and "Break Free" defines facelessness. That said, "Problem" is like the 2014 version of "We Can't Stop". Can't stand the artist, but it's really hard for me to resist liking the song. It's why they rank pretty close together. Both songs are jams. "Problem" jumps on the saxophone loop breakdown trend of late. But it's incorporated well. The part where the guy is doing the breathy "one less problem" in the chorus might be my favourite part of the song; oddly. The pre-chorus is catchy. Iggy's part is nice but I tend forget she's in this song. But this song is an example of Ariana trying to show off all the vocal tricks she can do (mostly in the pre-chorus) and it's unnecessary and distracting to an extent. That's probably a weird criticism, but it's actually one of the reasons why I don't like Mariah Carey that much.

John Newman - Blame 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#18 of 30 for '14) 6ACl8s_tBzE So probably the song that's newest to me in this list; due to it being an OA/OS #1 just a few weeks ago. I haven't heard this song enough times to properly judge it yet and I really don't know what to think of it yet. So I just put it somewhere in the the 5/10 section. "Summer" was instant for me (though I'm kind of tired of it now and I recognize its flaws), but this definitely wasn't. The drop and breakdown is very Calvin by-the-numbers and the production in general isn't that original for him. John Newman doesn't add much that I haven't heard from him already. 18 Months was a very solid album and I loved every single off of it (even "Drinking From The Bottle"). "Feel So Close" was my top song of 2011. Like every song he produced in 2012 dominated my personal chart that year. Calvin has definitely been one of my favourite artists as of late. So maybe my expectations are too high. Or maybe I'm just waiting for that one song that recaptures how I felt 2 years ago. I don't know. Now that I think about it, "Blame" wouldn't sound out of place on 18 Months. And I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I need more time to digest this one. I'll post the other half tomorrow. Which consists of 4 of my favourite songs of the year.

New rank / Old rank 437 / 428. Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You [2009] 436 / 427. Blue - Too Close [2001] 435 / 426. Psy - Gangnam Style [2012] #434. Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj - Bang Bang 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#22 of 30 for '14) 0HDdjwpPM3Y My opinion of Jessie J has certainly changed over these past few years. I loved "Do It Like A Dude" for being so WTF and "Price Tag" was a fine idea in 2011. And I still really like "Domino". I enjoyed her debut album for the most part, even though it was all over the place. It kept things interesting (though I had no idea what artist she was trying to be.) Though I didn't care for her screeching and her over singing (I really dislike when artists don't know how to use their voices properly and Jessie J is a major offender of that) but I appreciated it for the messages. Though it all seems rather contrived in hindsight. Her second album was pretty disposable but I still liked it. "Sexy Lady" and "Wild" are jams and I don't even care. But it's hard to like songs by an artist that is so dislikeable personality-wise. Either way, her songs are very hit or miss. This is more of the latter. It's not as bad as "LaserLight" or "It's My Party", but still. Interestingly, Nicki Minaj is another artist with an unlikeable personality that makes songs that I've liked. And she's also pretty hit or miss. As far as Ariana goes; well I'm not really a fan. She just annoys me for some reason. I don't know who's bright idea it was to throw these three into a song together. But fair play to Jessie using them to secure another hit. A collaboration of them isn't really something I'd be hyped about. It sounds like a mess on paper. But it isn't that messy, and that isn't my problem with it. I find the production a bit underwhelming. And I find the song just disinteresting in general. Jessie and Ariana are practically interchangeable. And it is screechy in parts. I think "bang bang" is supposed to signify sex. And I find it just sounds awkward with the way its worded in the lyrics. It sounds like gun shots.

Oliver Heldens & Becky Hill - Gecko (Overdrive) 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#23 of 30 for '14) kcZMCMI24gs Along with "I Wanna Feel", I've found this to be one of the underwhelming deep house hits of this year. I don't really know why though. It's weird because I love "Koala. And I also love "Afterglow", so it's not like I have anything against Becky Hill's voice or her voice appearing on a dance song. Indeed, I think her voice is fantastic and it's one reason to not dislike this. There's places in the production I like (namely that rolling part at the very beginning and the very end). But I guess there's just not enough going on with it and it doesn't really go anywhere. And I don't really like the production in the chorus for some reason. Random: looking at the lyrics just now, I thought it was "lips of passion"; instead it's "let's have passion".

Rixton - Me And My Broken Heart 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#25 of 30 for '14) 7JJfJgyHYwU Yeah it's one of the most unoriginal songs I've heard. It's a watered down version of Maroon 5 mixed with Rob Thomas' "Lonely No More" (which, incidentally, I've always found that Rihanna's "Unfaithful" sounds like). It doesn't do a lot for me, but it's catchy enough for me to not hate it. Not much else to say, really. Just a very forgettable #1.

Just when it looked like David Guetta was going to change things up this year; he falls back to this. But he's had worse. The verses in "Lovers On The Sun" have this country western dramatic stand off style production, which I actually quite like. But then it just builds up to a "Wake Me Up"-lite breakdown (it is co-produced by Avicii by after all) and it's a big let-down and I've lost most of my interest. This chorus is pretty underwhelming too. The words "We're burning up; We might as well be lovers on the sun" just doesn't evoke much in me. It sounds like a cliche phrase despite it not being a phrase I've heard before.

Cody Wise - It's My Birthday 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#28 of 30 for '14) JuM7hObGjWI What a pointless #1. These lyrics are awful and cringe. I have to just laugh at the "I can speak in Japanese; Kawaii, kawaii, kawaii" line though. will.i.am seems to make it his mission to create the worst song possible. From "Check It Out" to "T.H.E." to "Scream & Shout" to "#thatPOWER" to "Feelin' Myself" to this. But fair play to him for continuing to churn out high charting songs. This is annoyingly catchy in some parts so it's not as low as it could be. Wikipedia says that Cody Wise was born in 1995, and I'm surprised by that because I thought he looks and sounds younger. This song is pretty repetitive. The phrase "it's my birthday" appears 18 times. The production isn't that great either. And will.i.am says the words "care-uh" and "thi-ink" and "dri-ink" (among others) weirdly.

I'm going to add in the last 14 #1's ("Ghost" through "All About That Bass"). It just feels incomplete without them. If I ever update this list again, it won't be for a very long time. My opinions tend to change over time, so I'd probably wind up re-doing this entire list. I'm already feeling like a few these are too high or too low. But I'm not going to change anything other than inserting 14 new entries. So "The Man" is no longer my least favourite #1 of 2014! The honour goes to... New rank / Old rank 598 / 584. Joe McElderry - The Climb [2009] #568. MAGIC! - Rude 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#30 of 30 for '14) PIh2xe4jnpk To be fair, I've never been the biggest fan of reggae. But this production is just so irritating on the ears. It tries to fuse reggae with modern day pop sounds. But I find that combination just doesn't work here. At all. Granted there are some songs I love due to their addictive obnoxiousness (Showtek's "Booyah" is one that comes to mind). But "Rude" is just plain annoying with nothing redeeming about it. But of course, it's not just this production that's the annoying about it, there's also this chorus ("marry that girl... marry that girl... marry that girl")... just marry her already. This guy is trying to come off as this rebel bad boy by ignoring his girlfriend's father's refusal to let them get married. He declares they're going to run off and marry anyway, so ha! But the problem is that I just don't find him rebellious at all. More whiny than anything. Especially that phrase "why you gotta be so rude." And the whole thing feels very one sided. I just find it hard to sympathize, I guess.

#1. All Saints - Pure Shores 2 weeks at #1 in 2000 (#1 of 42 for '00) dVNdTXEJv1A I mentioned William Orbit's euphoric production as being effing fantastic on "Frozen". Well it's even better on "Pure Shores". This song defines escapism. Listening to it always takes me to another place far away. A calm, serene place. A place I can call my own. That's what the song is about, afterall. Searching for a place to escape to. But it's out of reach. Beaches and shores are often seen as paradises (like a tropical vacation or whatever), and that's the analogy used in the song. I especially love the bridge ("I move it; I feel it; I'm coming; Not drowning") and it sets up the final chorus well. Their voices are really soothing on this song and that definitely adds to the atmosphere. With a top 10 full of my favourites like Kylie, Madonna, Gaga, Rihanna, Girls Aloud, etc., my overall #1 winds up being by an artist that I don't even like that many songs from. Though it sticks my girl group obsession. Either way, it's still a bit of a dark horse that won out. "Pure Shores" does what a lot of other pop songs don't. The song is more of a feeling than anything else. This is a serious contender for my favourite song ever. That title is really difficult to determine, though, and I don't think I ever will determine it... but it is my favourite UK #1 of my entire life so far! 2000 ranking 42. #2. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head 4 weeks at #1 in 2001 (#1 of 30 for '01) c18441Eh_WE "la la la la la la la la la la..." yeah you get it. So this song was massive worldwide, and was her first song to beak America in over a decade. It went #1 almost everywhere. The US, as always, being one of the few places it didn't go #1. Kylie had her comeback the previous year with "Spinning Around" and the Light Years album. She continued with the dance music style with the Fever era, though notably being less camp and more straight-up pop. "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" has all the elements of a perfect pop song. It has a catchy hook (the aforementioned "la la la la la".) It has a simple meaning. The dance-pop production is really infectious. Fever is a solid album and I'm not surprised she had a few other hits off of it. I believe they all received a ton of airplay in the UK. Kylie's voice is very airy and gentle and soothing (I don't really know how else to describe it) on this. The video is cute too. 2001 ranking 30. Limp Bizkit - Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle) [572] 29. #3. Madonna - Frozen 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#1 of 30 for '98) gXbqJwtFC8c This might be my all time favourite Madonna song. Either this or "Like A Prayer". William Orbit's euphoric production, coupled with the "mmmm" parts, are just perfect. It all captures a certain mood that I can't quite explain. So does the video. Despite the fact that it was filmed in a desert, the video looks so cold. That's the point, though. It's desolate and uninviting. And Madonna is dressed all in black and appears just as closed off. I love the lyrics, too. 1998 ranking 30. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - Three Lions '98 [581] 29. Another Level - Freak Me [542] 28. Boyzone - All That I Need [501] 27. #4. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance 2 weeks at #1 in 2009 / 2010 (#1 of 32 for '09) qrO4YZeyl0I This is the most successful song in my personal chart's 5 year history. And it remains one of my favourite songs ever. Right at the peak of my Gaga obsession days. I was in love with everything that she was doing during The Fame era. And then she drops a new single in late 2009 and I was extremely excited. The first time I heard this song was on my local radio's show where they battle 2 new songs against each other. And one of those songs was "Bad Romance". I have no memory of what the other one was; but that doesn't matter. That first time I heard this song, I was like "OMG THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING CATCHIEST SONG EVER OMG". And I had to hear it again. And again. And again. And then when the video came out, I was obsessed even more. I LOVED this video to death. All the imagery in it. This song is packed full of hooks like "Woah-oah-oah-oah-oah", "love love love I want your love", and of course the infamous "rah-rah-ah-ah-ah romah-rom-mah-mah ga-ga-oh-la-la". This song is about being in love and how that includes loving their flaws too. Their ugly side. RedOne's production is amazing. 2009 ranking 32. Vanessa Jenkins & Bryn West feat. #5. P!nk - Just Like A Pill 1 week at #1 in 2002 (#1 of 29 for '02) JDKGWaCglRM I'll never understand how this became a UK #1. Besides "Lady Marmalade", she never had a #1 single before. She had 5 other top 10 hits before this (with "Get The Party Started" peaking at #2), but she didn't seem to be a threat to top the chart in the same way that Britney, Christina, etc were in this time period. Her only other #1 after this is "So What". Maybe she was just extremely lucky in a dead week, I don't know, but I'm really glad this managed to be a #1. This is my favourite P!nk song ever. The "Run just as fast as I can..." part works as a very strong hook. I think this song is comparing her relationship to drug addiction (which is becoming a common theme in the upper end of this list now..) But it's showing the nasty side of the addiction. Instead of it making her better, it keeps making her ill. And lyrics like "I tried to call the nurse again but she's being a little bitch" are exactly why I love P!nk. 2002 ranking 29. #6. Britney Spears - Toxic 1 week at #1 in 2004 (#1 of 29 for '04) LOZuxwVk7TU Britney has had a very solid singles discography (for the most part), and "Toxic" is one of her finest. The song is about being addicted to someone that's "toxic" for her. Her voice is very airy and high-pitched throughout a lot of this song. Especially in the pre-chorus and chorus... until she says the words "I'm addicted to you; Don't you know that you're toxic", which jumps to much lower pitch and she sounds pretty dramatic when that switch happens. The instrumental also intensifies during that part. It climaxes with those high-pitched strings. Though, those strings are prominent throughout the entire song. This song has always sounded ahead of its time, production-wise. Moreso in the US in the middle of the urban music domination. Either way, this production is incredible. It's one of her most well known videos. It's probably my favourite Britney song ever. 2004 ranking 29. Sam & Mark - With A Little Help From My Friends [578] 28. #7. Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground 4 weeks at #1 in 2002 / 2003 (#2 of 29 for '02) CvRWk8dXnSs This is my second favourite Girls Aloud song after "Biology". A flawless start to an amazing career. The Sugababes' "Round Round" started a change in the UK music scene in 2002 and this song picks up where that leaves off. Girl groups at the time, like Atomic Kitten, were doing camp cutesy pop. What The Sugababes and Girls Aloud did was completely change that around. They were edgy, they had sexy undertones in their songs, they seemed "cool". They weren't necessarily "good girls", so to speak. "Round Round" and "Sound Of The Underground" were both produced by Xenomania, so that production duo deserves a lot of credit here. This remains the best TV talent show coronation song ever and makes all those bland cover songs look even worse. These TV talent shows hadn't produced an artist quite like this at that point in time. Let alone produced a SONG like this. Indeed, this couldn't be any different from "Pure and Simple". I'm not entirely sure what this song is about, but I think the song is literally about itself. The lyrics are describing the song itself, and it's making a statement that these 5 girls are bringing something fresh to the table (that's why it's the "sound of the underground". It's also rhymes nicely.) I also like the pre-chorus where each of them doesn't a different line in it. Random, I know. This is also the best Christmas #1 of my lifetime. I don't know about all time though.

#8. Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris - We Found Love 6 weeks at #1 in 2011 (#1 of 30 for '11) tg00YEETFzg The more I think about it, I think this just might be my favourite song of (as in released in) the 2010's so far. It's one anthem of a song. The lyrics are concise, but that just makes them more effective. The words "We found love in a hopeless place" is repeated a lot, but it's like "Feel The Love", in that it just makes the words stick with you even more. A "hopeless place" can be defined as just about anything; it's very non-specific. That makes it easy to relate to. Often love is found in places one would never expect. This song makes references to drugs (the video especially); like "Yellow diamonds" (which I believe is ecstasy.) The song is comparing being in love with being on drugs. Both can be addiction. But it can also be an addiction to the wrong person. Which can be unhealthy like an addiction to drugs. That's why she keeps saying "But I've gotta let it go". At its surface, this seems like a "happy in love"-type song, but it's darker than that. The production is so energetic and gives off such an anthemic feeling. Most notably from the way it shoots up at the beginning of the breakdowns, which is pretty reminiscent of a drug trip, furthering the drug references. 2011 ranking 30. X Factor Finalists 2011 feat. #9. Nelly Furtado - Maneater 3 weeks at #1 in 2006 (#1 of 24 for '06) PLolag3YSYU My 14th birthday #1! And the highest of all my birthday #1's. "Loose" is one of my favourite albums ever. I remember at the time a lot of people were complaining that Nelly was "selling out" and abandoning her folk roots. But I really didn't care one way or the other. It still felt genuine to me. It's not like she was jumping on a trend; if anything she started this Timbaland trend. And thinking about it now; Nelly was probably the pop girl I like the most during this time period. I enjoyed her stuff more than Gwen, Fergie, Avril, etc. "Maneater" is also my favourite thing that Timbaland has ever done. The beat is amazing. I love the loud thumping drumming sound throughout and I love the haunting chanting backing track. It is a bit of a dark song. Nelly is giving a warning about these types of girls she deems "maneaters". The song is really catchy. And I love the outro on the album version. Timbaland was known for making overly long outros. But this one just enhances the song even more. Unlike the outro in "If We Ever Meet Again", which defines pointlessness. I remember in mid-2006 when "Promiscuous" came out, and I remembering thinking "WTF is this?". It was a really weird song, but it stood so much against everything else at that time. It was the lead single in North America, and "Maneater" was the second single (and for some bizarre reason, "Maneater" struggled to even go top 10 in the US; but I think it was much bigger in Canada). However, in the UK (and I think Europe as well?) the two singles were released in opposite order, with "Maneater" being the lead single. I'd say the right choice was made since each lead single was a massive #1 in their respective country. "Promiscuous" was more urban, so it was more suited to the US. Like I said, it way different from everything else in music at that time, and I appreciate it for its oddness. But "Maneater", though, was an obsession of mine for a while, and it would've been my year end #1 of 2006 if I had a personal chart back then. And it has aged really well. So it's no surprise to see it this high. 2006 ranking 24. Westlife - The Rose [571] 23. The Notorious B.I.G. feat. Diddy, Nelly, Jagged Edge & Avery Storm - Nasty Girl [564] 22. #10. Sugababes - Push The Button 3 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#1 of 25 for '05) oJDGcxAf9D8 "Push The Button" might honestly be my favourite Sugababes song ever. It just defines pop perfection to me. I find it funny that this knocked "Don't Cha" off the top spot since both songs follow similar themes (flirtation) and both are by girl groups. But, "Don't Cha" is in-your-face, arrogant, and classless. Whereas "Push The Button" isn't. It's about this guy they're interested in, and they're dropping every subtle cue they can to try to grab his attention, but he continues to be utterly oblivious to any of it, and they're frustrated. They want him to "push the button" (in other words: they want him to reciprocate). If he takes too long to do so, then he's going to "miss the freak that [they] control". Which is a lyric I love for some reason. This song was produced by Dallas Austin, who was more known for producing R&B songs, and this isn't very R&B so it's interesting that he produced it. It's a killer production, though. Especially in the pre-chorus. Like most Sugababes songs, all three members get their moment to shine. Heidi doing the first verse (which she usually didn't do), Mutya doing the second verse, and Keisha doing the pre-chorus and the spoken word middle 8. I like the video too. 2005 ranking 25. #11. Madonna - Hung Up 3 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#2 of 25 for '05) EDwb9jOVRtU For a song that samples ABBA, and borrows 70's disco sounds, it sure sounded really fresh and futuristic in 2005. It really stood out at the time. This went #1 in practically every country other than the US. I think because US radio was so immersed in Urban music and weren't ready for something so electro/dance. "Hung Up" sounded incredible then, and it's aged really well. This was made to be a dance floor anthem. And it succeeds in doing just that. It was a return to form for Madonna after the American Life era, and it sure felt like a comeback at the time. Even though she wasn't gone for that long. "Hung Up" starts off with nothing but a ticking clock; signifying that the slowness of time. And from there the production gradually builds its way into the song. It's one of those songs that begins with the chorus. With all that build up beforehand, there needs to be a climax (a verse would take too long), so chorus first is the only way it would work. And what a chorus it is! From there, the first verse is short and wastes no time jumping back into the "time goes by so slowly" refrain, and back to the chorus right after. After the second verse, it pulls a surprise and goes into a separate bridge of "I can't keep on waiting for you..". After the second chorus, it does that thing I love in a lot of dance songs where everything slows down to a hault (right back to the ticking clock) and then just builds right back into the explosiveness. I love how this song goes from something as minimalistic as that clock to something as explosive as the rest of the song. Top 10 starts tomorrow!!!

#12. Spice Girls - Viva Forever 2 weeks at #1 in 1998 (#2 of 30 for '98) 3wkuqRFXNvI This is my favourite Spice Girls song. And honestly this might be my favourite girl group ballad/mid-tempo ever. There's just something about this dreary atmosphere of this that gets to me. It's about never giving up on trying to recapture the feeling of a special moment you'll never have again.
