  1. #200. Sandi Thom - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair) 1 week at #1 in 2006 (#11 of 24 for '06) ni9uZBY83DQ The song about wanting to go back to the 60's and be a hippie, and to escape today's societal problems and apathy (despite the fact that were numerous societal problems back in the 60's as well). And "punk rockers" doesn't sound like the appropriate term to describe hippies. But I really like the simplicity of this song. And it's only about 2:30 long, though it doesn't feel like it. This spent 10 weeks at #1 in Australia for some reason.

  3. #201. Martin Garrix - Animals 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#6 of 30 for '13) gCYcHz2k5x0 I love the production. I love the drop. I love the popping sounds. All around brilliant dance tune. omg top 200
  4. #202. Ne-Yo - Beautiful Monster 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#9 of 34 for '10) 2J2dwFVZHsY By far my favourite Ne-Yo song. I just love the odd wobbly beat. It sets it apart from all the other dance pop songs of 2010. As does the dark nature of the lyrics.. when compared to 200 songs about putting your hands in the air. I think it's about being attracted to someone dangerous. It scares you and excites you at the same time.
  5. #203. Christina Aguilera feat. Redman - Dirrty 2 weeks at #1 in 2002 (#14 of 29 for '02) 4Rg3sAb8Id8 So Christina's "I'm A Slave 4 U" moment. Britney shed her "innocent girl" image the previous year, and now it was Christina's turn. Interestingly, both songs underperformed in the US, but both did very well internationally. But this is way raunchier than "Slave" ever was. This was way raunchier than anything Christina had ever done to that point. She had used suggestive lyrics before, but her previous material was very bubblegum pop. Indeed, there's nothing subtle about this. It's right in your face. I really like the line "it's about time for my arrival". Redman is completely unnecessary. And I don't even know what to say about this music video.
  6. #204. 2Pac feat. Elton John - Ghetto Gospel 3 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#8 of 25 for '05) Do5MMmEygsY This was originally recorded in the early 90's (I imagine), and was released posthumously, and slightly remixed by Eminem. It contains a sample of an Elton John song from 1971. I've never understood why this went to #1; it just seems so random. But it's a decent song with a strong message. It's about the children that are growing up in the ghettos and what they're being subjected to: the gang violence, the poverty, the drugs, etc. And when these kids grow up, this is the life they fall in to. 2Pac is expressing that he wants to change this, and this song is a call to make it happen. That society isn't doing enough about it. This is a "ghetto gospel"; meaning that 2Pac is being the preacher, and this song is his gospel. The Elton John sample is used perfectly, with the use of "young warrior". It's not an issue I'm that familiar with just because of where I've grown up and stuff. But this message was relevant in the 90's, it was relevant in 2005, and it's still relevant in 2014.
  7. #205. Jamiroquai - Deeper Underground 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#11 of 30 for '98) WIUAC03YMlA This song is taken from the 1998 film Godzilla. The song is about trying to escape the outside world because it's too horrifying to live in. Which is fairly specific to the film. I love the bassline production in this.
  8. #206. The Saturdays - What About Us 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#7 of 30 for '13) -6YLi0GNBTk Just no to the Sean Paul version ("ba-rang-dan-dan" or whatever). This is a very typical Saturdays song, if that makes sense. But that's exactly why I like it so much. If any of their songs could go #1, I'm perfectly fine with it being this one. Though "All Fired Up" will always be my favourite. The "na na na na na na"'s are catchy. I like all the sexual innuendos ("I like the way you tease me", "we can switch roles", "why don't you give it or take it", "I'll take the lead", "take it lower", "so give it to me.") The production is on point. The random auto-tune at the end of the chorus works.
  9. #207. Armand Van Helden feat. Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me 1 week at #1 in 1999 (#12 of 35 for '99) DA1KtfCg94A Just a brilliant dance tune. Not much else to say on it. :D
  10. #208. Tinie Tempah feat. Eric Turner - Written In The Stars 1 week at #1 in 2010 (#10 of 34 for '10) YgFyi74DVjc I remember when this came out in late 2010 and it sounded so epic. This song is about how Tinie rose to fame and conquered his dreams. Not the most original concept for a rap song by any means, but that's not important because the song feels so uplifting and inspirational. What makes this song, though, is the chorus (bar Eric Turner's heavy breathing which is kind of annoying).
  11. #209. Eminem - The Real Slim Shady 1 week at #1 in 2000 (#18 of 42 for '00) eJO5HU_7_1w This manages to slam just about every single thing going on in pop culture at the time. As well as Eminem responding to all his critics and negative publicity. All under his Slim Shady persona. Eminem was all about creating controversy, and wanted a public reaction. And he got just what he wanted. This song is pushing for even more controversy. There's definitely some shocking lyrics here. I also see this song as Eminem's way of asserting his own place within the pop music world.
  12. #210. Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith - La La La 1 week at #1 in 2013 (#8 of 30 for '13) 3O1_3zBUKM8 A song that took nearly an entire year to finally click with me. And it has become one of those many songs I regret not charting. Sigh, what can you do. Why did I dislike this at first? I found the "la la la na na na" parts really grating, and it just ruined the song for me. But eventually, what got to me was the emotional meaning of it all. Using a child's tactic (covering your ears and saying "la la la") to block out the mean people around you. It might seem a little silly, but it's better than nothing. And of course there's Sam Smith; who is just perfect to do the vocals on this song. This song is definitely more interesting than making 500 songs with Emeli Sandé, even though I've liked most of their collaborations. And for Sam, I've only really liked this song and "Latch". :/
  13. #211. Coldplay - Viva La Vida 1 week at #1 in 2008 (#5 of 20 for '08) dvgZkm1xWPE This song contains a lot of historical and Biblical references that go right over my head; all set to a strings orchestra. In 2008, I found this song kind of boring and I just didn't "get" it. "Violet Hill", on the other hand, was, and still is, amazing. I've grown to appreciate "Viva La Vida" today, though, but it wouldn't be in my top 10 Coldplay songs. And I'm still trying to make sense of this song today. But that's part of what makes it a great song: its complexity. There was nothing else in pop music at the time that was quite like this, and it's crazy how this became so huge in the US. I think the common theme running here is being in power and then having that power taken away from you. Something like that.
  14. #212. B*Witched - Rollercoaster 2 weeks at #1 in 1998 (#12 of 30 for '98) dMnCaA9pVW0 It's a very well crafted pop song, and has a really nice summery vibe to it. And still keeps to their Irish sound with that short violin breakdown. It sounds like this was made to be an American hit, though it only managed #67 there. But it was an Australian #1! Fun video too (though I think I'm looking at the US version of it).
  15. #213. LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock - Party Rock Anthem 4 weeks at #1 in 2011 (#11 of 30 for '11) KQ6zr6kCPj8 I know a lot of people hate this song, but I loved it 3 years ago for some reason. I even went as far as to declare it my favourite US #1 of 2011. I don't stand by that anymore, and this song hasn't aged on me that well, but I still enjoy it to a certain extent. LMFAO were never meant to be taken seriously, and they were just having fun. And I found their songs to be a lot of fun, too, and I liked their sense of humour. I even sort of liked Redfoo's "Let Get Ridiculous." :X Anyway. The "everyday I'm shuffling" line always amused me. And this was like the danciest dance-pop song that came about in the US charts at the time. Though this was WAY too successful in Australia. Also, slay Lauren Bennett with your flawless "get up get down put your hands up to the sun" (x643213212).
  16. #214. Jason Derulo feat. 2 Chainz - Talk Dirty 2 weeks at #1 in 2013 (#9 of 30 for '13) RbtPXFlZlHg It's interesting how Jason can put a song I like this much, yet still put out such crap like "Trumpets". I also can't stand "Ridin' Solo", "It Girl", "Fight For You", "Stupid Love", and I can probably add "Wiggle" to that list too, but I find that one sort of hilariously awful. But then I loved "Whatcha Say", "In My Head", "Breathing"; along with this song. (All his other singles are just averagely "meh".) So what is it that I love about this song? The beat, mostly. I love the clappy beat, and I love the sax breakdown. And this sounded very different from any other single Jason had released. 2 Chainz's verse is too much for me, though.
  17. #215. Nizlopi - The JCB Song 1 week at #1 in 2005 (#9 of 25 for '05) rGkseGFQLh4 This song really tugs at your heartstrings, doesn't it? He's reminiscing about when he was 5 years old: he's just spending time with his dad at work, riding on his JCB, escaping school from all the bullies, not a care in the world or a care for what's going on around them. The only thing that matters is this moment together. The tone of the song makes it seem like they're no longer able to have moments like these anymore. The song never explicitly says this, but I just assume this is the case. It makes it seem much more emotional: missing the good times from your childhood. But then in the latter part of the song, it switches up into a Mumford & Sons-like jam session. It leaves the song on a positive note: not dwelling on the present situation, and just staying in this positive memory. Some of the lyrics can seem a bit cringe, but then I remember this is from the perspective of a five year old, so it's ok. I love this video too.
  18. #216. Melanie B feat. Missy Elliott - I Want You Back 1 week at #1 in 1998 (#13 of 30 for '98) Hx1krWk-kFI She was the first Spice to get a solo #1; yet she arguably had the most underwhelming solo career of them all. That's really saying something when Victoria Beckham is in that mix. Mel B's album took 2 years to be released after this song, and was overshadowed due to being released at the same time as the Spice's 3rd album. Mel B's peaked at #28 on the album chart. Though I've heard that the album was awful, and I'm wary about giving it a listen. Anyway. Missy Eliott's production is the best thing about this song. There's just something about it that fascinates me. I like her ad libs too. Mel B.. well.. she's not awful, but she's not amazing either. She was never the strongest member of the group. Actually, I don't think any of them were as strong individually as they were together. I'm not sure what it is, but each of them brought something unique to the group and it just worked so well. But I'll talk more about that when I get to their remaining #1's. The bridge is the best part of this song: "..sittin' all night at the bar".
  19. #217. Eminem - Like Toy Soldiers 1 week at #1 in 2005 (#10 of 25 for '05) lexLAjh8fPA This song is about the feuds going on in the rap community at the time. Most notably the one between 50 Cent and Ja Rule. And how Eminem didn't want to be involved in it, but they kept trying to drag him in anyway. I like the sample of Martika's "Toy Soldiers" in this, and I like the comparison being made (a soldier fighting someone else's battle.)
  20. #218. Shaggy - Boombastic 1 week at #1 in 1995 (#7 of 17 for '95) rrI0kTGuVA4 So from what I can tell, there are two versions of this song that were used. The one linked above with the more dancey beat, and the one with the Marvin Gaye sample. My radio station has only played the former, and I've never actually heard the latter outside of playing it on YouTube lol. The former is the better version anyway. That beat makes the song a jam.
  21. #219. Sigma - Nobody To Love 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#5 of 16 for '14) KD5fLb-WgBU I don't think I've had such a major turnaround with any other song this year. When I first heard this, I found it dull, and sounded like every other drum n bass song out there. It just didn't do anything for me. But it grew on me massively, and managed to go all the way to #2 on my personal chart, and has become of the songs that's defined my summer this year. It was that line "tired of loving with nobody to love" that really just stuck with me. It just rings so true. And then I listened to the full version and I love the intro. And I grew to love the production, along with the "oooooooooooooooooooooooooh weeeeeeeooooooooooooh."
  22. #220. Duffy - Mercy 5 weeks at #1 in 2008 (#6 of 20 for '08) y7ZEVA5dy-Y Amy Winehouse brought back this retro/soul sound and sold quite a few copies of "Back To Black" in the process. Adele and Duffy (among others) ran with this sound not long afterwards. And it sort of became a short-lived trend in 2008. Interestingly, "Mercy" and "Chasing Pavements" (#2) were released around the same time. Duffy seemed to be the breakout artist of 2008 (though Adele was no flop.) But then the success (or lack thereof) of their respective second albums had such drastically different results. I just really love the bassline in "Mercy", and I love her voice on this, and I do like the retro sound. Also this blocked Nickelback's "Rockstar" from going #1, so I'll forever be thankful for that.
  23. #221. One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful 1 week at #1 in 2011 (#12 of 30 for '11) QJO3ROT-A4E So this 1D's debut single; and Liam, Harry and Zayn get all the solos. Sorry Niall and Louis fans. Their #1's aren't their best songs, but this is one of their better songs. I remember when this was released on UK iTunes and went straight to #1 and I had no idea who these guys were or why there was so much hype. Then I watched the video and understood. But I really liked the pop-rock sound of this; it took me back to like 2008 (and then they kept rehashing this same sound.) It was catchy, although corny, and I've never been big on these songs about "girls needing their boyfriend to boost their self-esteem". And the lyrics are a bit oddly worded. But I still enjoyed it, and still do.
  24. #222. Calvin Harris - Summer 1 week at #1 in 2014 (#6 of 16 for '14) ebXbLfLACGM I'm sick of this song right now. But I was really into it when it came out. I just really loved the production for some reason, even if it's "basic"/"generic"/etc. And I loved hearing Calvin do vocals on his own song again. And I do like the "You act so innocent now; but you lied so soon" lyric.
  25. #223. Will Young - Leave Right Now 2 weeks at #1 in 2003 (#10 of 22 for '03) WbrSLLv0AlA His only decent #1, and the best Pop Idol-related #1. The story of the song is that he's meeting up with his ex again; he's contemplating getting back together with them; but he knows that it's a bad decision because he'll just get hurt again. He realizes it's best to just leave before anything happens.
