how has your music taste changed?
I've gone through so many changes and honestly my tastes are all over the place. When I was 11 I was listening to System of a Down one moment, Britney Spears next, and then PJ Harvey right after without that feeling weird to me. At 22 now, I feel like I treat music the way chefs talk about food honestly — good food is all about a diversity of interesting flavors and pairings. I think people who are so bound into one "box" or "genre" are so boring 2 me, not that I don't have preferences of course - but the people I can really talk to and get into it w/ music all have really diverse taste. There's an excellent Bjork interview where she's talking about 2Unlimited and people who hate on pop music, and how she sees that as bullshit (and also makes a reference to food). I definitely went through a "Pitchfork"/"Blog" phase a couple of years back, though I was always still really interested in pop music. I slowly realized how that was sort of bullshit and also v untrue 2 myself — I would say my tastes right now are all over the place w/ a focus on pop music, video game OSTS, Nu-Metal, drum n bass, 2-step garage, 90s house, electronic, and dance music and a tendency towards LGBT or female vocalists. I've also really loved relooking at a lot of music that's really nostalgic to me that I sort of pushed to the side - Imogen Heap & Korn come to mind.

music criticism
Or your bias against it? If anything I feel like Pitchfork have a bias towards white straight dudes with guitars...though I will agree that w/ rap artists included, it's really just a bias towards straight male musicians. Reviews are slowly becoming irrelevant. Pitchfork is becoming irrelevant. I said this somewhere else recently, but Pitchfork will be seen in 20/30 years as NME + Rolling Stone is now — dated and out of touch (watch Vampire Weekend + Bon Iver continue to top their EOY charts in 2040). Not that I think there's no benefit to discussing music but I think the idea of a score is silly. I'm far more interested in Pitchfork's interviews, cover stories, and features moreso than the individual reviews. Reviews used to be useful as a way of discovering new music and getting a little "preview" of an album before buying it. In the age of Spotify and streaming, the best way to determine whether you will like something is just to preview it rather than read a review about it. There are way better sites right now that are killing it w/ their music discussion far more than Pitchfork as well - The Fader, Dummy, Fact, Bullet.

Broods 'Broods' EP
I think the Britney record is fairly weird though? Work Bitch is such a bizarrely aggressive song, productionwise, which is probably why it wasn't a chart topper. If it was just a standard EDM record I probably wouldn't care. I think there's being in the zeitgeist and then there's being a very surface response to a trend.

Kate Bush.
Her records are all pop records 2 me - I guess I just use that term fairly loosely. Very weird, intricate, beautiful pop music, but still pop music.

Kate Bush.
The best pop star of all time, hands down. Anyone who hasn't gotten into her yet is really doing themselves a disservice. I literally still get chills when I watch Running Up That Hill?

Results - TBO VI SF1
Literally so many forgettable/boring pop songs got through? The semis were sooo unbalanced in terms of quality. Semi 1 was filled with a lot really good/loved more left-field songs so of course the pop voters all went to the same songs (American Girl, etc). Semi 2 was filled with more of the pop songs but the qualifiers were far more "indie".
