I was looking at one of those Youtube 'Biggest streaming tracks of 200x' videos yesterday and was shocked at how so many tracks that were niche back then had become huge in streaming. System of a Down had 3 tracks in the streaming top 50 for 2002. The Calling didn't even feature. I can't think of any time in music where popularity has been so warped compared to chart success. Maybe Mr Brightside is a big example of that. Biggest song ever, didn't go top 10 in 2004.

It matters for the careers of UK pop artists. Same as its ever been. If you aren't charting top 10 then what are you signed for? American artists have always had the advantage that their home market is so big that acts can be sustained with far less chart success but if a UK artist can't be successful here its pretty much over. Oddly I actually feel that the 00s had a lot more variety in the charts than now. You had massive pop records. You had mainstream heavier rock like MCR, Evanescence, Linkin Park etc You had Radio 1 pushing a big indie scene with Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. The US led with 'black music' (it was called Urban back then but I think that is probably inappropriate now), like Outcast, Ne-Yo, Usher. Then you had amazing Dance music bookending that decade. Well what do we have now? No harder rock, that is all nostalgia acts. The odd indie track pushed by TikTok. A more UK based black music scene but nothing new and exciting. If you asked me what the early 2020s music scene has been I'd say 'pop girls and tiktok songs with a strange country fad'. This year we've seen established artists hit strong and fade. But its not the end of the world. I think its sort of a generational thing. I always considered 2005-2008 to be dull because Millennial artists didn't know what they wanted to do. Then once Gaga,Kanye and Calvin hit in 2008 dance music was dominant for a decade. What do Gen Z artists want to do? They can't all be variations on Taylor Swift. Maybe they are just figuring it out? The money isn't in that though is it? Its in having a bank of tracks that they can tour.

I think there are multiple factors here -Fragmentation of the market. You can listen to any song ever made basically. You can have record consumption but they aren't listening to new stuff -Expansion of the audience base. Downloads came out and it was millennials on their PCs downloading from itunes. The chart was controlled by younger people for a LONG time. But streaming is really available to everyone from 10-60 now. That changes things. People with jobs and kids don't have as much time to find new music. They put on what they know and like. Music becomes background noise. -The streaming model being repetitive. You are charting how often things are listened to, even passively, rather than the active choice to buy. I don't see how we get around that. As for the charts maybe they need a rethink. Top 40 has always been the gold standard because that is what was considered to be what the market supported. In the US, its a bigger country, top 100. But with the diversification of the market and audience perhaps top 40 is a bit restrictive?
