With a record deal the artist gets a set amount of money as an advance to write/record/promote an album. If the album does not sell well the record company loses money. A distribution deal only does what it says on the tin.... Emma Bunton and Simon Fuller had a 3 way distribution deal with a record company. They financed the album themselves, the company distributed it and they split the profits 3ways.
