I don't get how anyone can have this station as their top choice. Is their selection of old songs really that broad?

People who want to use them to sleep. A former co-presenter of mine had one as his top song on Spotify Wrapped last year :D don't think they count for the charts though

Blur vs Oasis, Spiller vs Victoria, Duke Dumont vs Ding Dong, pretty much any Christmas chart before 2013 are the ones that spring to mind. If you want to see chart battles today, just check the albums charts on busy weeks :D

End of year charts are all about the long game now. Songs that are available all year can rack up sales for all 52 weeks and if they are consistent (which most big hits are) they will do similar sales for much of the year allowing them to stay ahead. Newer releases have no chance unless they are giga-hits. The newest song on the 2024 YE chart is Taste released in August which spent more weeks at the top than any other song and is still only at 21. Also there are songs that just consistently do well no matter what which always beat out newer hits that have no longevity (see Dog Days Are Over and Naive)

Definitely not Cliff's finest work in terms of his Christmas number 2s, not fussed about them dropping out. Was going to give a point to Gordon but subbed him out for Bieber in the end. Aside from When I'm Dead... and the very underrated Floral Dance (a friend of mine is from Brighouse ^_^) I don't like any of the other dropouts!
