Polydor are saying that for extra sales but knowing full well Loreen is a quite long way off #1. It's not as if Ellie/Calvin are slowing down.

I think that rule applies to albums. If if was an issue for singles they wouldn't count multiple versions of the same song from iTunes/Amazon downloads in the first place because some artists beg their fans to buy them all  According to OCC a “free gift” is defined as any item which has a market value of its own, however small.

United Kingdom · Eurovision Song Contest 2023
I know some new releases take a while to get noticed and chart but this one had significant promotion and debuted at #30 then dropped like a stone. It's popularity wasn't that organic which is why it has dropped after the contest but it's still doing better than our songs before 2022. You could say it's the loud minority but a lot of people said they didn't like the song before the contest and a bad result isn't going to make them want to listen to it now. That's just what happens unfortunately.

United Kingdom · Eurovision Song Contest 2023
I don't think it would be a Top 20 hit without Eurovision. It had a boost when it was first released because people were curious but that dropped off quickly despite significant radio play and playlisting. You're right that people like success and people supported Sam whether they liked the song or not because he united the country and did something people thought was impossible.

There is no reason why he won't but I will be protesting outside the BBC if Lee Smithurst doesn't return to the UK Eurovision team following ESC 2022 and JESC 2022.

CHA CHA CHA CHA CHA CHA CHA He isn't far behind Loreen on Spotify :yahoo: He should be added to Hot Hits UK if he hasn't already.

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 · Grand Final
Kaarija benefited from being high in the betting odds for months which created momentum. Other entries that stormed the televote in the past didn't have that and the song being popular in Norway and Sweden would have helped get their jury 12pts. France was good but she wasn't the most charismatic singer and the performance was quite static. Australia doing so well in the juries and Germany doing so badly was a surprise but you could argue the former was more accessible.

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 · Grand Final
I'm more impressed that a Finnish song by an unknown singer is dominating the Spotify charts almost as much as Loreen. Yesterday Global streams were only 148,267 difference and Loreen has much better post-contest PR and playlisting. It will be a contest fan favourite for sure. When was the last time a song in 100% Finnish entered the UK chart?

The same record label that stopped PinkPantheress getting to #1 by not having signed CDs.

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 · Grand Final
However I don't think that is the problem. The issue is the songs these countries send are often worse than the ones that NQ in the semi-finals in the first place. When they send full package entries (Spain 2022, UK 2022, Germany 2018 and France 2021) they do well with the same format. This is the first year a lot of casual fans blamed the performance instead of politics because they saw what was possible last year with Sam and his performance in the final cemented that.

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 · Grand Final
The producer from SVT and Melodifestivalen personally invited Loreen to participate in Melodifestivalen and when the International Juries were chosen they eliminated the ones who were less likely to vote for her such as the UK one based on historical voting. It was one of the weakest Melfests in years and it was always said it was harder for Loreen to win Melfest than Eurovision. While Loreen deserved to be the winner it wasn't exactly transparent.

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 · Grand Final
Finland got a higher jury vote score than predicted because historically juries wouldn't vote for entries that. He wouldn't have been appreciated by Norway and Sweden if it wasn't a Nordic entry and wasn't a fan favourite to propell him up the betting odds. He would have been another Norway 2019 or Moldova 2022. Understandably people are upset because Loreen underperformed in the public vote with the lowest % score since 2011 for a winner. Finland got 18 x 12pts and 9 x 10pts (including ROTW) while Loreen got 0 x 12pts and 8 x 10pts and people feel their paid votes didn't matter after finding out Finland couldn't have won even if he got Ukraine's public vote in 2022. In fact the lowest public vote score he got was 6pts. Is that Loreen's fault? No but a handful of people decided the winner and none of them were going to not vote for Loreen. You didn't need a Crystal Ball to know she was going to win back in November. Loreen had no intention of returning until Christer Björkman from SVT (Melfest producer) asked her and by happy coincidence she was sent Tattoo... it was also one of the weakest Melfests ever... I wonder why? ;)

What you do is send a charismatic and competent live performer with an interesting and dynamic song. Sam Ryder with Space Man ticked all the boxes and the song was written 18 months before Eurovision. Noa Kirel and Alessandra had much better pop songs and Noa showed the world why she was Israel’s biggest female popstar.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying catchy fun entries and it already entered the Global Spotify so people are listening to it. It’s also my most listened to Eurovision song of 2023 by a country mile.
