Yay! The economy!
I’m in the process of applying for a mortgage. Fortunately, the bank have agreed to lock my rate in from July but the current situation is very worrying indeed. Interest rates are deffo going to increase much higher and inflation will remain high for several months. I have absolutely no confidence in the Tory government to manage this. They just haven’t a clue and will most likely make things worse if they continue with their current policies of tax cuts. Labour are 17 points ahead in a recent opinion poll. Bring on a general election is all I can say!

The Tory Liz and deceit thread Mk. II
There is a very interesting article in the Guardian today about what happened in the early 1970s when the government implemented big tax cuts to try and stimulate the economy during a period of high inflation. The only positive outcome was a labour minority government being elected. Could history repeat itself again? I can’t post the link as I’m a new member!

The Tory Liz and deceit thread Mk. II
The problem is the cuts will benefit the richest most - it has been estimated in the Guardian today that someone earning £1m a year will gain £55,220 pa but a worker on a salary of £20k pa will only benefit by £157 per year. Is this really fair? Will it help the economy recover? Think about it like this. Many workers on average salaries will see more money in their pay packets soon but all of this will be swallowed up by increased energy prices, rising mortgage payments and higher prices for goods so they will actually be less well off in the long run. The only thing this budget will do is help the rich and widen social inequalities further in this country.

The Tory Liz and deceit thread Mk. II
The pound has fallen below 1.10$ for the first time since 1985 in response to the governments tax cuts. The 1.10$ threshold is quite significant and suggests the market has no confidence in the government’s economic approach and as a result, we may well see further damage to the economy such as increased inflationary pressure and further rises in interest rates. This is the opposite of what everyone wants but when you have an incompetent government who don’t know what they are doing then what can we expect. It will be short term gains for long term pain.

The Tory Liz and deceit thread Mk. II
Their plan is not credible and was tried in the 1970s when we were in a bad situation and didn’t work then. None of the measures will help those who are most in need and will only excarbate existing inequalities in society. Also, there appears to be no additional funding or support for the NHS or social care which is on its knees after years of cuts and lack of investment. I am afraid the future in this country looks very bleak.

The Tory Liz and deceit thread Mk. II
I’m really worried by what’s been announced in the budget today. I think Truss & Co seem to have no real idea about what they are doing by making substantial tax cuts which are likely to benefit the richest most and do little to stimulate growth. You need proper investment for growth. And there appears to be no proper plan about where the money is coming from? While our public services remain in dire need and are likely to be subjected to further cuts in the future when the government realises their plan hasn’t worked. Scrapping bankers bonuses is almost the same as refusing to implement a windfall tax on energy companies. The bankers were in part at least responsible for the financial crash in 2008 and yet it is the public who ended up paying for their reckless errors through austerity.
