W/c 03-01-15 So kicks off another year, with a new number one from 17-year old Greyson Chance who removes Coldplay from #1 after four weeks. It is only the second appearance from Greyson following the success of Thrilla in Manila last year and in that time his voice has really matured. Coldplay however should not be too hung up as they achieve the title of the first act to have 5 songs inside the Top 40, and Everglow joins AOAL in the Top Ten! It being the beginning of the Year as usual a number of tracks are going back up the charts, while others re-enter from the outer reaches. Canadians Bob Moses gets the highest climber with Tearing Me Up (a lot like Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game') which finally takes them beyond the Top 30 while the highest **chart* entry comes from DJ/producer Grant Harris or Goldhouse with a superb track called 'Over'. The Top 100 Tracks of the Year Here is my Top 100 of the year based on listening stats...it's a mixed bunch...one noticeable thing to me is that a number of tracks carry an element of funk or jazz with appearances by Greyson Chance, Kwabs, Dornik, Shift K3Y, Miami Horror amongst others. Dance music makes its mark all over the chart again with the most listened to song of 2015 an understated deep house classic from a British DJ and Producer. Then there are appearances from established artists and bands (Fratellis, Tame Impala, Beck) as well as some presence from virtual unknowns (try googling Eons - you won't get much). Special mentions for Hurts who after several goes finally reached #1 in November, Citizens! with the brilliant 'Waiting for your Lover' an unexpected hit, as well as Cut Copy's Ben Browning who achieves a well-deserved runner up position (with an impressive 25-week chart run) with synthpop master 'Make it Easy'. 2015 best video award for me goes to OK Go for 'I Won't Let You Down' with its clever choreography (it was all done a lot slower apparently!) and best comeback to New Order for 'People On the High Line' - combining piano house with a funky bassline. I obviously cannot forget Mark Ronson whose 'I Can't Lose' got remixed by Duke Dumont into an absolutely banging tune and eclipsed the success of 'Uptown Funk' (which I'm sure everyone is bored to tears with). And I have to mention the other heroes - Miami Horror who have 3 tracks in the Top 100, and who had 11 of their songs enter the Top 75 during 2015 and had at least 1 song in the chart every week between 1st March and 15th November, as a consequence 'All Possible Futures' becomes the most listened to album for me. The impact of 'A Head Full of Music' is sure to be felt in the following weeks...the runner up falls to young Greyson Chance who only manages to edge up ahead of Hurts at 3. The biggest news stories of the week are for: LA synth band Pollyn who narrowly miss the Top 10 against Wretch 32 after only rising a few places last weekKylie Minogue who (expectedly) rockets 23 places up the chart with the only original Christmas song to make the Top 40 this year (although given it's a SAW remix you could quite easily have heard it 100 times already :P)Atlanta export Electric Sons who rise into the Top 20 with the excellent 'Into the Night'Duo Powers who storm into the chart at #30 with the superb 'Hot' - expecting this to be big (previous track from same EP 'Legendary' called 'Beat of My Drum' reached #27 in June). A shout out to Ben Browning who this week notches up 23 weeks in the Top 40 with 'Make it Easy' giving him the longest running song in the Chart and two favourite Christmas hits from yesteryear with Greg Lake achieving #28 and Jona Lewie reaching #39...next week likely to see the usual end-of-year slowdown and probably a few Christmas songs making a late appearance (by then)...

Instead Coldplay is my firm favourite for week 2 and it's Hurts who stay behind them after falling from number one last week...I'm expecting 'Wings' to make an appearance in the New Year. That said it's an absolute whopping climb for the 18-year old 'Paparazzi' star who continues to go virtually unnoticed in the UK. Behind him at 4 and also largely unknown is South London's rising star Jodie Abacus with his euphorically funky tune (a bit like the Jacksons' 'Dance and Shout')...and at 5 it's a second week for the brilliant 'Pray' by fellow Londoners Haelos. Frankmusik's latest stomp-along offering from his album 'For You' continues its storm up the charts and 'Magnets' by Disclosure with this time guest Lorde also ambles into the Top 10, Disclosure not yet living up to the success of 'Settle'. Worth a mention is Russian producer Kolomensky (formerly Dany Kole) holding steady at 10 with his third appearance this year...if you like early 90s house music worth checking out. Outside the top ten shout outs this week for The Knocks who have had numerous hits, facing somewhat of a slow-climb up the charts (the title puts me off a bit) with 'I Wish', Pollyn's 'Don't You Want My Love' with its whirling sounds, Duran Duran with 'Ordinary World' (part 2) :P and the only bit of Christmas so far from Kylie Minogue with a bit of help from SAW (other Christmas tunes are available just outside the Top 40)...

The Hozier run is impressive! Great to see all the Christmas tracks re-appearing.
