U2 hotel owes €57k as city council waits for €4.8m in unpaid rates
DUBLIN City Council still hasn't found what it's looking for from U2's Clarence Hotel.
THE local authority revealed it is owed more than €57,000 by the top hotel, which was bought by Bono and The Edge in 1993. <_<
The council named Brushfield Ltd, trading as The Clarence, on a list of 50 companies which owe a combined €4.8m in outstanding commercial rates from last year.
The levy - payable by business owners for the provision of council services - is a key source of revenue for local authorities across the country.
Clarence general manager Clinton Attwell told the Herald: "The hotel has been in existence for a long time. In that time, we have always paid our rates.
Occasionally, a balance would go through to the next year. We have a long-term relationship with Dublin City Council which has always worked well."
The Clarence, on Wellington Quay, has an outstanding bill of €57,823.75 from 2011.
Brushfield Limited lists Bono and The Edge as directors.
Surprised
City officials said the top 50 companies owe a total of €4,885,831.34, with Tulane Business Management listed as having an unpaid bill of €892,956.08.
Tulane operates the hotels formerly run by developer Sean Dunne's MJBCH company in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
But Pat McCann of Dalata Hotel Group, as associate company of Tulane, told the Herald the sum is actually owed by MJBCH and not Tulane.
He pointed out Tulane only took over the operation of the business in January this year.
Fine Gael councillor Ray McAdam sought the information ahead of a meeting with City Manager John Tierney about the council's budget for 2013.
"To be honest, I was surprised there was that much outstanding," he told the Herald. "I want to know what the council is doing to accrue these outstanding rates."
The details show that NAMA owes the council €132,789.21 relating to 38-40 Grand Canal Street Lower.
Labour councillor Dermot Lacey called on the State loans agency to "pay its bills" to the local authority.

U2 on Schedule for 2013 Release
Pretty much since the early part of promotion for the ‘No Line on the Horizon’ album, U2 has hinted that there’s a wealth of material that could result in multiple projects, but so far there’s been no mention of an actual release date.
However, the band’s U.K. label Mercury Records let it slip that the group is on their release schedule for 2013. The U.K.’s Music Week reported the news in a pair of tweets. The first stated, “New Metallica, U2, Arcade Fire and Noah and the Whale album coming next year, Mercury Records has confirmed.”
The second tweet added a quote for Mercury’s U.K. label chief Jason Iley, who stated, “2013 could be one of the best years Mercury’s ever had.” Iley has a long-running relationship with U2, and lured them over to Mercury after the split with Island Records several years ago.
While fans wait for a new album, they recently had a hand in picking the music for a record that’s bridging the gap. The ‘U22‘ live disc was recently issued for fan club members, with the entire track listing being chosen by fans of the band’s following and taken from material performed on the ‘U2 360′ tour.
Fans should likely be able to forgive the band if they’ve been preoccupied in recent months. Guitarist The Edge has been mourning the death of his mother, and bassist Adam Clayton just ended a trial in which his former assistant was sentenced to jail for embezzling funds from him.

Do I have to do the next one? I've been listening to some Robbie lately! If it is me - I'm going to make mine as cryptic as I can!
Speaking of cryptic - I did a quiz last weekend for a 'Joining Jack' fundraiser! I made up some cryptic towns - would you like me to post some here?
Kath
Yes please do ..might as well be doing that seen as there's nothing else happening in Robbie ...
Maybe Ayda has had her baby, I doubt it though, Robbie is useless as keeping secrets unless they manage to sew his gob together

Bono and Wife Serenade Daughter With Duet of Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’
Ali Hewson, Bono
Let’s offer a big happy birthday to U2 singer Bono and wife Ali Hewson’s daughter Eve. She celebrated turning 21 Saturday in Las Vegas with a big night out with her parents that included dinner at Tao Las Vegas, a couple of magnums of Dom Perignon champagne delivered to a private table at 10ak at the Mirage — and Bono and Ali slipping the DJ there a CD of them singing Lady Gaga‘s ‘Telephone’ to accompany the champagne as Dad got on the mic to wish his daughter a special one.
We haven’t been able to find video of Bono’s speech — or, more importantly, footage of him and wife singing Gaga — but perhaps that’s not so surprising. They were, after all, at a posh club full of celebrities like wild child Wilmer Valderrama and Laker star Kobe Bryant, a place where such things as privacy are generally respected. We kind of doubt footage of this fantastic experience ever will get out, as much as we would like it to.
Eve, by the way, is the second oldest of Bono and Ali’s four children. She briefly attended New York University before dropping out to pursue an acting career, appearing in Paolo Sorrentino’s ‘This Must Be the Place’ in 2011.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’ Covered By Bono For Daughter’s Birthday Surprise
As if being U2‘s frontman is not notable enough, Bono attempted to impress one of his biggest fans this weekend, his daughter Eve.
Celebrating Eve’s birthday this past Sunday at 1OAK in Las Vegas, the Irish-born artist shocked the birthday beauty and partygoers alike by slipping the DJ a recorded track of a duet between he and his wife Ali Hewson.
The song was a unique version of Lady Gaga and Beyonce Knowles’ hit “Telephone”, the New York Post reports. The track has yet to be leaked. In addition to the recording, the music mogul dad sent two bottles of Dom Perignon Champage over to his daughter in celebration of her turning 21-years-old, the legal drinking age in the U.S.
The surprises did not stop there.
Rapper Fabulous also gave a special shout out to the birthday girl and dedicated a song in her honor. Eve tweeted a photo from the night, writing: “This Happened!”

NIKON CREATES ITS FIRST 3D AD
10 July, 2012
Camera brand Nikon is set to launch its first 3D cinema ad in Sydney later this week.
The cinema advert is a 3D version of the brand’s popular ‘I am Nikon’ campaign which features Stephanie Gilmore, Jamie Oliver and Robbie Williams.
The two-minute ad will be show during cinema ad-network Val Morgan’s pre-show program at all main Hoyts and Event Cinemas from July 12.
Nick Segger, senior marketing manager Nikon Australia, said: “Following the huge success of the ‘I am Nikon’ campaign on TV and in cinema, 3D animation was the logical next step, to bring this inspirations content to life.”
“Nikon is committed to the use of innovative, emerging technology in our cameras and lenses and we fell that the new 3D advertising is a reflection of this.
“Watching our two minute ad on the big screen with surround sound is a moving experience, seeing it in 3D will take it to the next level.”
The TVC was converted into 3D by New Zealand post production facility Park Road.
Dan Hill, Val Morgan’s national sales manager, added: “Savvy brands are understanding that cinema provides the ultimate audio visual platform for advertising.”
