Bono's Elevation firm takes a punt on Sonos speakers Gosh !! Mrs Merkels face tells a story , she obviously  Bono http://i62.tinypic.com/2n24boh.jpg Nick Webb Published 15/06/2014 I love your early work: Bono waves to Angela Merkel and Herman Van Rompuy. Photo: Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters U2 frontman Bono may be set for another massive technology score, as wireless speaker maker Sonos takes off. Bono is a partner in US venture capital firm Elevation, which has backed Facebook, Yep and other tech groups. It has also invested in Sonos, which saw revenues double to $535m (€395m) last year. The San Francisco firm, founded in 2002, allows users to wirelessly stream music from dozens of online services including Pandora, Spotify and iTunes. Elevation invested in the company in 2012 as part of a funding round that raised $145m. Investors included private equity titan Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and Redpoint Ventures. The company was blasted into public consciousness with a high-profile ad during the superbowl earlier this year. Elevation also invested in the US business magazine group Forbes. It was put up for sale last year, with Chinese conglomerate Fosun International widely seen as the front runner in a deal. It is thought that the media group could sell for around $250m – less than originally thought. Elevation paid $240m for a 45 per cent stake in the company back in 2005. Elevation partners have been extremely active in recent months, following a splurge of deals during the early days of the web 2.0 boom. Earlier this year, the venture capital outfit was part of a group that ploughed $17m into native advertising start-up Sharethrough. The other investors included Silver Creek, North Bridge and Floodgate Last month TPG Growth appointed Bono and The Edge to the board of iconic guitar maker Fender. irish Independent

Review: Robbie Williams still has the pull, if not the songs Robbie Williams played Odyssey Arena last night BY MICHAEL CONAGHAN – 14 JUNE 2014 The second decade of the 21st century has not been especially kind to those pop stars who came of age either side of the millennium. But Robbie Williams is a figure tailor-made for the big event, so despite the inevitable career stutters there is always a Jubilee, an Olympics or hey, a World Cup to hang on the coat-tails of. He still has a big star's pulling power, with a sell-out multi-hued crowd buzzing with anticipation at the Odyssey. You know the audience are up for it when the roadies get an unironic cheer. He duly emerged from beneath the stage in penguin suit and regulation cheeky grin with opening pop stomper Shine My Shoes. For all the pizzazz of the first part of the evening, there's no real sense of engagement with the classic American songbook that peppers the show, the dance routines are rather desperate and Robbie is more Freddy Starr than Fred Astaire. An exception was the subtly Brechtian Everyone Hates A Fat Pop Star, which saw our hero hoisted and stuffed by his own petard or someone else's, and despite the comedy, hinted at the self-loathing beneath the glitz. The Hollywood satire that was Swing Both Ways had genuine wit and invention, like 10cc at their most cinematic. Arch and knowing as he is, one senses that Williams believes in the cause of the great entertainer, perhaps because his own back catalogue has its longueurs. Robert Peter Williams, by all means let him entertain you, but Angels aside, it will always be more artifice than art. THREE STARS Belfast Telegraph
