  1. At this rate it looks pretty likely Union J will be number 2. I don't think there's a chance of number 1 though, they're not as popular (or as good - never thought I'd be saying that but their song's terrible) as One Direction who got 150k with their first single, and Robin Thicke should be looking to be not far off that in his second week, so I don't think Union J have a chance.
  2. 819. Kodaline - Love Like This Come on, backing this all the way to the top 40! I don't care as long as it gets there next Sunday! I can see why people would be buying the EP instead of this though, it's fantastic!

True, I guess 2003 was a bad example, I meant a little earlier than that really. But back then, it seemed more common for a song to have MASSIVE sales than it does now, even though sales in general were lower. If a song had enough appeal, people seemed to all rush out and buy it in the same week when sales were mostly physical. Now, because there's no rush for singles as they don't stop selling them, songs are more likely to sell a lot over a long period of time. Although I admit I should have maybe said 2002 rather than 2003, even in 2003 there were as many weeks of the year (2) in which a song sold over 200k as in 2012 - and in the few years before that there were even more. That's all I'm saying, although sales were lower overall back then, it was more common for songs to have generally massive first week sales because people were more likely to rush out and buy them. :)

I love Now 42 purely for having Tender by Blur on it :D

Personally, I don't think these kinds of comparisons can really be made, as to choosing which songs "don't count" because of various reasons. There are always factors which affect a single's sales, and you're never going to get an accurate comparison unless you choose two songs which had no airplay, no performances, no exposure, no promotion and so on... Which let's face it, has never happened, because the whole reason singles get to number 1 is usually because of those things. Different songs get different levels of exposure and get different sales. Also, a few years ago it was a lot harder to get a song you liked for free than it is now, so I think high sales nowadays are more impressive than they used to be - I'd say Robin Thicke selling 180k in 2013 is a greater achievement than somebody selling 200k in 2003, so comparing them is a bit pointless. But then, I guess it gives people some pleasure to argue about it, so by all means carry on
  7. Really really hope Love Like This does well for Kodaline, it's such a great song! And a bit less "boring" than High Hopes so maybe it won't get so much hate on here (though I love that too). Anyway, I've had the EP and album on pre-order for months now, so glad they're finally coming out soon! :D Oh, for anyone that hadn't noticed, I like Kodaline.

Was really hoping Little Talks could get into the top 10 this week, a song that good never getting there is criminal (but then, pretty much every good song seems to miss the top 10, so why am I surprised?)... Anyway, at least it's looking to return to its original peak which is good :)

The albums chart update has been up on the official charts website for about 10 minutes, if it helps ;)

This new Jessie J song is AWFUL. She used to be "not too bad" in my eyes, but this is going to take some coming back from :(

I think it's got to be remembered how high pre-orders were for Blurred Lines - it was in the iTunes chart for a few weeks and got to number 11 before release, so I'd think at least 30k of its sales were pre-orders (might be wrong though)... So yeah, it'll probably still do 150k this week, but I doubt it'll be as much as some people are predicting. Time will tell though. I can't believe how much number 1 sales seem to be picking up this year! :)

I have the first Now album, as well as 8 and all of 37-84. I occasionally buy old ones from a shop near me which sells them, getting Now CDs from the 90s is a really nostalgic feeling! I don't know who it is that was on Now albums 28 years apart (surely that would mean they were on at least one between 2011 and 2013, and I've just checked all from 78 to 84 and can't see anyone obvious - unless this includes the spin-off albums as well, such as Now Love or Now Running) but Phil Collins was on both the first one in 1983 (with You Can't Hurry Love), and Now 68 in 2007 (with In The Air Tonight, it re-entered the chart after that Cadbury's gorrilla advert). A gap of 24 years. :) Edit: Ah, it was already answered, it's Brian May - sorry!
  13. 6 versions in the top 1500?! :o
  14. +5 La La La - Naughty Boy feat. Sam Smith +4 Get Lucky - Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams +3 Olly Murs - Dear Darlin' +2 Passenger - Let Her Go +1 Armin Van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie - This Is What It Feels Like -1 Rudimental feat. Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night -2 Chris Malinchak - So Good To Me -3 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton - Can't Hold Us -4 2 Chainz feat. Wiz Khalifa - We Own It -5 David Guetta feat. Ne-Yo & Akon - Play Hard I find it funny that the three songs which have left the top 10 this week are the three songs which entered it last week - not really a clearout at all!

Occasionally when I browse CDs I will take a closer look at something with a nice looking cover, and probably be more likely to be convinced to buy it, but I still won't if it's a kind of music I don't really like. I'll definitely say that it often happens that both covers and titles dissuade me from buying something - if I pick it up and think, that looks/sounds stupid, I won't buy it. However, this happens quite rarely seeing as whatever browsing I do, I usually only buy an album if it's either by an artist whose albums I always get, or if I've been listening to them a lot recently and have heard some songs from the album, so in general it's the music itself that I choose based on. Having said that I still get annoyed if someone I like comes out with an album that looks stupid
  16. Can't believe Robin Thicke is nearly in the top 10 on pre-orders! It's amazing how this year has gone from relatively slow in terms of singles sales, to massive, in the space of a few weeks! :D
  17. I was actually thinking about this a few days ago - based on the success of their previous singles I think this has a chance of going to number 1 but it seems a more likely top 3 hit to me. And if it follows their usual pattern, only two or three weeks max in the top 10. I do hope that the B.o.B feature actually helps this to do well - if not, it will annoy me even more that they've done this collaboration. I hate rappers and their meaningless features on otherwise good songs, and I'd actually consider buying this if not for him, as he pretty much ruins it for me. It's still a good song but as usual I believe it'd be better without him, and I fail to see what led them to collaborate with him (although as I'm aware, Andy did mention wanting to do a song with him in the past, but that could be their label telling them to make people think they're into it). I know Lawson have never been exactly a rock band or anything, and their music is more pop than anything, but at the same time I can't help feeling that it just doesn't suit. Maybe that's just me being overdramatic about the fact that someone I like has collaborated with someone I hate! Anyway, I would like this to do rather well because I think they as a band deserve it, and it had the potential to be another great song for them.
  18. +5 Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky +4 Passenger - Let Her Go +3 Rudimental feat. Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night +2 Armin Van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie - This Is What It Feels Like +1 Chris Malinchak - So Good To Me -1 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton - Can't Hold Us -2 Demi Lovato - Heart Attack -3 Sub Focus feat. Alex Clare - Endorphins -4 Wretch 32 feat. Shakka - Blackout -5 David Guetta feat. Ne-Yo & Akon - Play Hard
  19. I do like the Naughty Boy song quite a bit, but I want to see Daft Punk stay at number 1 for 5 weeks in a row before Robin Thicke (surely) overtakes next week. I think La La La will be number 1 on Wednesday and then fall behind later in the week, but it's anyone's guess - I'd say they'll both be over 100k! On another note, it looks as if we could get 7 weeks in a row where the number 1 sells over 100k! 21/4 Rudimental 107k 28/4 Daft Punk 155k 5/5 Daft Punk 163k 12/5 Daft Punk 123k 19/5 Daft Punk (110k?) 26/5 Daft Punk or Naughty Boy 2/6 Robin Thicke
  20. That's not quite right for Gotye. He had a week at number 1, then dropped down to #3, then returned to number 1 for 4 weeks. :)
  21. 15-19, but I think my music tastes aren't really average for my age group  I don't think there was a need to include a "prefer not to say" option though, if you don't want to divulge your age you don't have to vote!

I'm inclined to believe Daft Punk will sell over 100k again, with half that after only 3 days! They could well do it again next week too, with the album out. Five weeks over 100k is amazing, so I hope they do!

I really want Bad Blood (the song) to chart, but it's already been released and did nothing - though this was before Pompeii. (Speaking of which, do people realise that Laura Palmer is actually the fifth single from the album?)
  24. +5 Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams - Get Lucky +4 Passenger - Let Her Go +3 Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding - I Need Your Love +2 P!nk feat. Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason +1 Armin Van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie - This Is What It Feels Like -1 Rudimental feat. Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night -2 Chris Malinchak - So Good To Me -3 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton - Can't Hold Us -4 David Guetta feat. Ne-Yo & Akon - Play Hard -5 will.i.am feat. Justin Bieber - #thatPOWER This must be the first time in ages that there are only two songs in the top 10 that I really dislike :o
  25. Mirrors hasn't done as well as I expected it to after getting three weeks at number 1 :(
