Top 100 Best Selling Singles Of The 1970s
It was rare to pick up picture sleeves in the 70s at all until the late 70s. They were mainly early incentives to buy a new single but the big retailers like Woollies were more into being a bit cheaper than proper record shops and generic label sleeves prob helped with their mass sales and margins. I'm guessing! I have quite a few picture sleeves from around 1974 but they were mostly flop singles that ended up in the bargain bin of a specialist store. My first treasured picture sleeve was gatefold Wizzard and their xmas classic. Its also the original version not the 1981 re record that charts every xmas. So i am glad i bought that one early as a Roy Wood fan. I also bought Forever his solo hit but that was generic Harvest label sleeve so i suspect they were just hoping to outdo Slade with the cover helping Wizzard. Another reason was demand for stock running out on popular hits suddenly popular so they imported from France with generic sleeves where the uk printing was picture or coloured vinyl. Im still bitter about the tattier sound quality of a Rat Trap imported copy that i bought which turned to be a French printing logo. Pah! Really enthusiastic to see these results im still baffled by sales lists for this decade outside the big ones. ๐คฉ I base my own "sales chart" ratios on a 1976 top 50 chart printed in a book about the uk music industry. They didnt give song or artist info but what i presume were based on panel sales data also mentioned previous week chart positions so i worked out it was one of the weeks that Fernando was at the top end. So i have that data i could repeat if i dig out the book. I doubt it would make much difference to your figures though!

john v's 9th Aug 2026 charts: The Game Of Love or straight from the Club?
9th August 2026 It's back on top for Michelle Branch singing The Game Of Love over decades on from doing it with Santana - but this time it's with New Radicals aka Gregg Alexander, who wrote the song, giving Gregg a second number one 27 years on from his previous and only a third charting hit, though his songs have topped my charts for Ronan Keating and Texas as well. Kylie & Madonna make the UK top 10 with a mix of Madge's Love Sensation, so they have been combined for chart purposes here and climb to 5. Olivia Rodrigo gets 2 top 10's off her latest album as The Cure climbs to 6, Jungle replace themselves in the top 10 for a 6th time as Someday, Somewhere climbs to 7, ANOTR and 54 Ultra get a first top 10, Francesco Gabbani also gets a first top 10, and The Rubettes take 1977's Baby I Know back into the top 10. Highest new entry and a chart debutante is Lily Meola at 23 with the cracking Sleeping With My Boots On, while in at 43, Etta James' version of Stormy Weather popped up in a TV series sweet spot and debuts with class and style, 14 years on from At Last topping my charts, the standard 1933 song was recorded by Etta definitively on the same At Last album in 1961, so only 65 years late! Lulu had a hit as a teen sensation with Shout in 1964 and is still going - I have my ticket for Salisbury in October - and the musical chameleon has been absent from new material for quite a while (11 years) but has charted for me in every decade since her chart debut I'm A Tiger in 1968. Her new dance track I'm In Love Again enters at 72, and makes it 7 consecutive decades of charting for my personal charts. No other female singer can claim that. William Orbit sadly died a short while ago, so his 1990 chart-topper Fascinating Rhythm is back at 79 in tribute, Shed Seven are back again with another banger, Stand Together new at 89 for 32 years of charting, Empire Of The Sun join themselves (sort of - PNAU) in debuting another FIFA song, the third on the chart, Llego at 90, for a 17th year of charting while Rev & The Makers grab another track off the new album at 95, in D Minor. Madonna is scattered across the chart, and drops another album track in at 97 with Fragile, and Ariana Grande gets a second off her new album Petal, at 98. That leaves Brandon Flower's solo Tiger's Blood at 100 to become his first solo entry since 2015. Sadly I was too late to get tickets to hear him perform (hopefully) the three fab chart-toppers in my charts in the 2010's. That's more than The Killers. 1 2 1 4 THE GAME OF LOVE - New Radicals & Michelle Branch 350200 2 1 1 7 CLUB TO YOUR ARMS - Rose Gray 890000 3 4 3 7 HONEYBEE - Olivia Rodrigo 239900 4 3 1 6 DON JUAN - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich 418500 5 7 5 9 LOVE SENSATION/AFTERHOURS RADIO EDIT - Madonna/Madonna & Kylie Minogue 217400 6 19 6 8 THE CURE - Olivia Rodrigo 136900 7 14 7 5 SOMEDAY, SOMEWHERE - Jungle 113700 8 12 8 12 TALK TO YOU - ANOTR featuring 54 Ultra 214800 9 15 9 3 BABY I KNOW - The Rubettes 84300 10 18 10 8 SUMMER FUNK - Francesco Gabbani 142600 11 17 11 2 THE LOVE BOAT - Lowdii Beats 60000 12 5 1 6 ZABADAK! It's a 21st for Rein Me In as The Reytons climb the album pinnacle
It's a 21st for Rein Me In as The Reytons climb the album pinnacle Boosted by all the media articles, the record-breaking keeps on going for Rein Me In with a 21st non-consecutive week on top of the single-track chart, and that 6 months total for Sam Fender and Olivia Dean is looking increasingly likely week on week. That the only serious contender continues to be the World Cup song after the competition has ended underlines how difficult other tracks find it to get the ball in the back of the net. Dai Dai sticks at 2 for Shakira and Burna Boy still clear of two contenders for runner-up in Movin' To The Sun at 4 (HUGEL, Imael Angel & Ultra Nate would make a great number one!) and Choosin' Texas at 3 again - the fixture ruling the US Charts has only 2 or 3 tracks ahead of Ella Langley's for total weeks on top there. That leaves Olivia Rodrigo's Stupid Song at 5 again. The highest new entry is trying to do its' best to hang onto a top 10 slot with varieties of purchase options - I've download the 59p radio mix version - but falls short of the top 5, but it's still great to see Madonna and Kylie Minogue revamping one of the best tracks off Confessions II in Love Sensation, giving Her Madgeness 3 top 40 tracks off an album, something she's not done since 2008's Hard Candy, and not to mention her 2nd top 10 of the 2020's and first top 10 as lead act since 2009 and her 61st top 10. Phew! Princess Kylie has her second of 2026 including the XMAS hangover from number one. Madonna is on 42 years of hits and Kylie a mere 38 years and 37 top 10's. I guarantee most people in the Eighties would not have put any money on that happening, and not even me. Well, maybe a pound on Madonna in 1989 on long-odds. Sienna Spiro climbs to a new peak of 7 with Great Expectation, Silva Bumpa keep that gradual climb ongoing as On 2nite sneaks in to the top 10 at 10. Stella Lefty (upper case name ignored here) goes back up to a new peak of 9 with the sweet Boston. I like to imagine it's about the town in my old stomping ground Lincolnshire, but the accent isn't quite right. 'Iyah Bostun! 'Iyah Lincun! Ey yup Nework! Malcolm Todd hangs his earrings up at 15, Temper City are up to 24 with Self Aware, and Tame Impala's Loser is up to a new peak of 14, great to see, and Alyssa Grace is up another few spots at 18 with Bloodstream. At 28 Ella Langley's Be Her at last breaks into the top 40 after 19 weeks of trying, a great song and record that one, and her 2nd top 40. Alex Warren has yet another new track debuting at 39 with Rescuer, he's been bunging 'em out at pace but Ordinary is still refusing to vacate the 40. This is his 10th top 40 since Carry You Home in 2024. Ella and Alex are not the only ones getting a second top 40 this week as HUGEL joins the club, with SOLTO (FR) on board - more shouty text please! - new at 34 with Jamaican (Bam Bam), and Steve Lacy is in at 23 with oh yeah? Chalk Spiderman: Brand New Day up for a second hit on top of Tame Impala. US musician Steve had a number 8 hit in 2022 with Bad Habit, so this is his 2nd top 40 in an Indie-style that seem to be getting better at cracking the charts. I like it! Sabrina Carpenter gets an anniversary vinyl boost to add to the swarm of oldies clogging up the chart 2 and a half years after first topping, with the fab Espresso back in at 26. I love seeing a classic oldie returning to the chart after years away. 2 years is the same as never leaving the chart though, and it's like getting nostalgic for that minty bar of chocolate you enjoyed a few weeks back. A sprinkling of a new peak for Audrey Hobert (Sue Me) at 29 among a sea of perma-charters, the award for this week's "Surely It's Out The Chart Now!" trophy is given to Midnight Sun, Zara Larsson for indirectly costing us 45 quid winnings in a pub quiz Monday cos I couldnt remember the title from the 2 lines of lyrics quoted from it. Doh! Brain-freeze is a terrible thing... Over in albums, it's a comfortable new entry at 1 for The Reyton's new album A Love Letter To A Broken Town, that is presumably home-town Rotherham, which I've been acquainted with over the years, along with Sheffield. The band have charted 2 EP's, a live album, and this is their 2nd studio number one from 4 in 5 years. I'm guessing a lot of the sales are from fans following their huge live gig at Clifton Park in 2024 playing to 20,000. FLO is nearest new runner-up at 5, with Therapy At The Club, the British Girl Group's previous album peaked at 3 (Access All Areas), and is pipped to 2 by Essential Michael Jackson, Olivia Rodrigo still seeming pretty sad at 3, and Ariana's Petal wilting already at 4. Role Model is another all caps singer, as is all the vogue these days, the US singer-songwriter is from Maine, not traditionally a deep well of famous male singers, and Chuck Timely & The Hourglass is the first of his 3 albums to crack the UK top 10 at 6, though he's been making more waves in the US for the last couple of years since his first album under his current name in 2022. There's a rush of new albums from little-known acts scattered throughout the top 40, starting with Overmono dropping in at 12 on Pure Devotion, Welsh brothers Tom & Ed Russell brand of electronic music previously peaked at 11 in 2023 with Good Lies. Kylie Minogue has brought out a batch of vinyl editions of several albums this week, one of them, X, has not previously been available in that format and duly enters the highest at 26. The other 3 fall short of the 40. Man/Woman/Chainsaw sound like a Rock Band, that'll be cos they are, the London schoolchum collective chart with their second album Cannonball at 33. Liverpool band Keyside debut at 38 with their eponymous album, having only previously dropped EP's, and have a buzz for their brand of jangle-indie-pop going on. Sounds promising! Finally a quick shout-out to Electric Callboy who just fell short of the top 40 at 62, annoyingly, with TANZNEID - the shouty hardcore-punk-ish German band have a fun sense of humour and appeared at Download this summer - my nieces and nephews were there - and Ive bought a couple of fun singles with The Offspring and Babymetal. That should be all from me for a bit, if my calendar-keeping is correct, as Suedey has a welcome return next week, raging wildfires across the nation permitting - it currently takes up to 2 hours to get from Poole to Southampton via back-roads after the New Forest caught fire and the main dual carriageway is still closed until at least next Thursday. Simon is near the seaside though so fingers-crossed all will be well. Yay!

John v's 2nd Aug 2026 charts: it's back on top for a club banger into my arms
Hi AH! ๐ Sorry to hear about the ongoing antibiotics and soreness what a palaver! Time you had a bit of good luck! Busy ol week here ta, hospital with my nephew sorting problems he developed, watched the eclipse got some good photos, pub quiz won the music round again ๐if i had a bigger conscience I would get some wrong on purpose and give other teams a chance...! ๐ Records getting a 2nd run on top arent that common for me in the same run but it does happen every few years or so - have to admit I cant remember the last one to do it though! ๐Yes that Tina Turner first version was an oddity, though it prob sounds OK too. Bubbling under is good enough for me๐, and Michelle Branch is great๐คฉ I'm still hoping Kylie n Madge hang on to the top 40 slot today, but yes its mostly actual sales not streaming I think. I love that Love Boat track, it's the vocal that makes me suspect AI, as it very much isnt Jack Jones or the TV version, but its a proper 70's sounding soul crooner hitting all the notes perfectly in a Lou Rawls-ish fashion, but the arrangement is way better than any previous versions. Forgetting to chart some tracks is easy when one's chart is chock a block all the time! ๐ Rein Me In has the record now so it should do the decent thing and let Dai Dai grab a week on top - but it aint going to happen! thanks as always for the pciks and comments! cheers! ๐

John v's 2nd Aug 2026 charts: it's back on top for a club banger into my arms
and Hello Jordan! Glad you like the New Radicals-isation of Gregg's classic song Game Of Love too - I always thought he should have recorded them all himself but he didnt like being a pop star and gave them all away! I hope he does some more! HUGEL is very catchy indeed, great that its gone big in the UK too, been buying some of his stuff before he finally broke through. Sugar sounds to me like it could have been a huge hit in the 90's, it has that vibe about it. Sonique had 3 massive bangers for me, Sky and Can't Make Up My Mind as well, all 3 topping my charts. I very much wasn't 8 years old in 2000 hah, thing is it still doesnt seem that long ago, yet it is! ๐ Aww glad you like Bonnie's oldie๐ I'm with you on Dai Dai, took me a lot of listens to click too, but it's fun in a way that Whenever Wherever was back in my clubbin' days. Many thanks for all the picks and comments! cheers ๐

John v's 2nd Aug 2026 charts: it's back on top for a club banger into my arms
Hey James!๐ Hope all is afb with you! It's not often tracks go back on top for me, but it does happen maybe once every 2 or 3 years, Club To Your Arms has got legs though, still sounds great! I think its my song of the year too so far ๐ฅฐThe Cure was just taking a rest as I wasnt in the right mood that day, but you will like the new chart move ๐Fate yes, bit of a quick fall really. I think I went big on the intro and the whole classical vibe but maybe that tune is just a bit too familiar long-term, been hearing it all my life - a bit of the original arrangement has literally by a quirk of fate indeed, just been played on Radio 2 as I type this! What are the chances!? ๐ฎ Katy Perry is a good track (much better than its chart position suggests) but there's just so much good stuff around oops! The best bit is the last minute or so after the build, I'd almost have been tempted to have that up front, then slowly move back up to it, teasing, for the climax ๐ cheers! ๐

RabbitFurCoat Ranks the 2012 #1s
Elbow's is a masterpiece of orchestral indierockpop, and Carly Rae's is a great pop record, that may well be the best so far to drop out, it's all so delighfully infectious, and she continues to make good records, though as you say hits elude her. Current-ish single On Wires is an interesting one, nothing like Call Me Maybe!

RabbitFurCoat Ranks the 2012 #1s
sweet nothing I dont recall as well as t'other one oddly, but I like it, I was still just able to shuffle about on a dance floor a bit at the time, so it prob popped up on holidays. Sounding good, still, and in 2012 I rated it as a number 34 - good but not a top fave. Maybe just short of the top 10 for me.
