John v's late 20th April 2025 charts - 2017 track vs 1985 cover again
Hi AH! π Never worry about commenting, it's all good, I just fancied having a peak at yours to see if the best current BJSC track that I can vote for was still on top π a week where an ex workfriend my age and a mate's mum passed away, both pretty suddenly, comes with the advancing years sadly, but two friends from college stopping tomorrow so that will be luvverly! Hope life with you is upbeat and stress-free! Hits radio like Beautiful People? That's good, Radio 2 has played it too, Guetta and Sia now officially not Radio 1 it had to happen, maybe thats why its not been a hit - to me it sounds as good as some of their older hits, but kids move on to newer "cooler" stuff as ever. Miley Cyrus, yes thats a great record, a shame its not been bigger, but I often love her stuff more than the general public does, and vice versa, all a bit bizarre! thanks as always for the detailed picks and compliments!π

POWER TOP 40 - WEEK 17 2025
Hey Sven! π Hope all is great! Good top 6, Miley and Ariana climbing inside the top 20, and Damiano entering the 40, I've just done that too, but lower down! Bubbling under, Ravyn Levae is sounding good, Jonas Brothers, Sugababes, Doobie Brothers too, plus Whitney, Shaboozey, Lizzo. Back in 1976 the weather starting to get warm ahead of the endless dry summer, with a batch of chart-toppers for me from Abba, Tina Charles, Four Seasons, Cliff Richard, Bellamy Brothers, and faves from Mike Oldfield, Silver Convention, John Miles, Roxy, Miracles, Walker Brothers, Billy Ocaen, bay City Rollers. I see Sandra of Sandra & Andres Eurovision entry back again too! Dont remember that one! great charts! π

Sergej's Personal Chart 25.04.2025
Hi Sergej! π One of the great things about holiday music is having a chart overhaul with all the stuff enjoyed elsewhere π My ch 20 years agoarts used to be very Florida-influenced back in the day, and there was bound to be some from my Belgium holiday but I would have to look those up these days, I can't remember now! Good to see Ed Sheeran and Damiano holding in the top 10 with all the inrushing of new/old stuff! Ordinary at a new peak π₯° Miley and Cyrus new peaks inside th 20, Rudimental & Tom Grennan up, great chart! π

The Gallup Years- Top 10 Sales- 1989
As per usual with popular boyband singles if I like them, they disappoint the core fanbase πI thought Too Much was more interesting than the last couple of singles from Bros. French Kiss I was never a fan of especially, i think i was still very much in the US Jam & Lewis dance vibe at the time. Jive Bunny. Well. On the one hand I was pleased to see old classics get a push for a new young generation. On the other hand they got very annoying very quickly, cheap n cheerful.

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
and back to the one before, for Amillionsons, I love Misty Blue, and it goes back even further than Dorothy Moore's hit version, I recently discovered an earlier soul cover version by Joe Simon which also worked. I just like the song in any version I think, including this one 8/10. Round Round is top Sugababes, what's not to like, 9/10! Daniel Bedingfield is all about his banging debut for me, but James Dean is his next best track 7/10. I agree Lasgo's didn't quite match Something but still good for me, 8/10. Hear'Say, I also ditto on this track, I thought it was far and away their best single, which in the world of teenypop appeal seems to be the kiss of commercial death, 8/10. I liked the Snap! remix as much as the original I think, 8/10, though to be fair I haven't heard it since and it might have sounded better in the club on the night. Mary J obv I like, have a 7/10 Mary! Still loving her bad-ass character from Umbrella Academy season 1. The only other track here that grabbed a rating was B2k - have a 3/10!

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
Not heard The Music track since it charted and I had no idea they were that young. One I rather like myself too, 8/10. I miss electric guitars spotlighting in the charts, though Pink Pony Club ends on one, which was great to see. Truth Hurts was decent too, a 7/10 and great to see Rakim back from his Paid In Full middle-eastern-vibes-ish 80's hit. Extreme Ways I have come to see as a Moby 10/10 classic thanks to the recent poundingly exciting dance revamp with Armin van Buuren, but at the time it was "merely" a 7/10 for me. I like it when records sound even better with time. Oakenfold's Starry Eyed Surprise was a big choon of then, irresistibly catchy and upbeat. Also a 7 from me. Milky I don't recall, but that's how I like my tea, coffee and hot chocolate. A 5/10 rating as per my charts, while Flaming Lips are usually good and Do You Realise is one that very much stays singable in the memory decades later, 8/10. I'm Alive is a very decent 7/10 for Celine, and I actually like the recent heavily revamped version by Majestic, mixed with The Whispers And The Beat Goes On, titled Set My Heart On Fire. That's even better than the original, though I have appreciation of that thanks to Stuart Little 2. As my mum's dementia progressed she got a lot of enjoyment out of the Stuart Little films, they made her feel a happy for a while, so I put them on a lot. In the Abs vs Blazin' Squad battle, it's a firm abs from me, and not just because I wish my mid-riff was less flabby, it's just a better pop record. I love Uptown Top Rankin' so that's not a bad format to poach, and Five were a cut above the average boyband. a strong 8/10, as opposed to Crossroads which scrapes a 3/10. I will stick with the original for both, of course.

The Gallup Years- Top 10 Sales- 1989
I also liked that Gloria ballad, a chart-topper for me, her hubbie and her were always basically the creative part of Miami Sound Machine whatever was on the label. The move towards Gloria solo will give them a boost for the new decade, especially with the bigger emphasis on ballads.

My record of the week 60 years ago
Happy birthday Rollo! The only one I dont know here is The Honeycombs'. That's decent enough, but forgettable. I think Herman's Hermits version of Wonderful World is probably the first one I knew, and I still have a soft spot for Peter Noone, but yes, Sam Cooke is the main one. I like the Cilla cover, and Randy Newman songs are always classy. Dylan's, oddly, I didn't really notice until i saw the video in the 80's as video TV took off. It's a goodie. The Drifters was also a 1972 hit for me too, no memories of it from the time. The Walker Brothers/Scott Walker are amazing, so I'm also inclined to go with Love Her, even though it's not one I know well, probably only heard it a few times. That ought to be remedied!

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
Royksopp are always good, Remind Me reminds me of The Bad Touch rhythm, and So Easy is lovely. Neither are familiar to me, having not heard them in 23 years, but they grabbed a double 7/10 from me at the time. ATC OTOH managed a mere 4/10, I do remember it from the time though, and am in favour of nicking Russian tunes (see Those Were The Days). In My Place was a biggie for me, the moment when Coldplay moved into the big league. I'd caught them in concert around this time, and bought the single. 9/10. Fascinated was OK, a 4/10 but Bowling For Soup ended up in the gutter at first throw, and Def Leppard could also only just grab a 4/10. Intenso Project, well I adored Dreadlock Holiday and 10CC, so I was bound to like this one I remember being a fan, so did the chart position match the memory? Yes, 8/10. Cam'ron had a 6 week run but fell short of the top 60 so that's a 4/10 from me, while Mad'House "could have been far worse" indeed π a generous 5/10, and also for for old times sakes for Quo. Sometimes the very familiar is reassuring - or annoying. One or the other! So that leaves Toploader hot off 2 number ones in my charts, and this single grabbed an 8/10 from me. Not that I remember it all, and I'm embarrassed to find I first listed it as Time Of Our Lives and never corrected it throughout its chart run. Oops my chance of ever getting a 3 in 10 for Toploader on Popmaster is quite low π Playing it now, bomps along reasonably well though the song isn't memorable, I think a borderline 7/10 is more realistic for me now!

Sergej's Charts from 1981
Hooray more 1981 nostalgia for me! π₯° Kim Carnes very much an iconic track so a long run on top is justified, I reckon! I think Ottawan doing about as well in my charts of the time too. Good climb for One Day In Your Life, and Elton too. Of the new entries, Elvira was a catchy tune, but never charted in the UK, and Marty Balin's track I dont remember but I have an inkling he was in Starship or a band like that. Playing it now, it's quite laid-back. Nice. George Harrison at 2, yay! π₯° Neil Diamond doing well with his movie song, I think it was. One Day In Your Life leaping too, still a classic to me, and you are still 40 years ahead of the love for Hall & Oates' as it nears the top 10. Modern Girl popping in, I still like that pop tune from Sheena, Kenny Rogers' I Don't Need You showing just how much my charts were based around the UK singles chart of the time, and whatever Radio One played, as this is another I dont remember. Another mellow pleasant tune. Believe It Or Not I do remember though, I think we got the TV series eventually, and I liked the track, though not a UK hit it was huge in the States. Chequered Love I loved, Kim showing she was here to stay. Banger. I was playing her latest album in the car only today, still got it! β€οΈ great charts!!

GraΕΎios Dainos - 90s decade : 1994

PopMaster & Ten To The Top II
oops missed the intro doing the 1989 thread. round 1: 21 one year out plus whatever I missed. round 2: 36 (big country and a bit of geography thrown in to boot) 3 in 10: people are people, see you, just cant get enough

The Gallup Years- Top 10 Sales- 1989
Sonia, she always gorra lotta stick but I like her, she was a decent singer but by this time SAW was starting to overload the charts. The song is OK, it's not classic SAW though. Ain't Nobody, the original, is pretty perfect, but this one didn't ruin it. On Our Own is better than the film, one of Bobby Brown's better big hits I thought. Bette Midler is an iconic singe and star, hugely entertaining on chat shows of the 70's and 80's, love her. Sadly I hate Wind Beneath My Wings. Opt for her cover of Youre Moving Out Today instead...

The Gallup Years- Top 10 Sales- 1989
never heard that unreleased Prince track, that could have worked. Licence To Kill is a good Bond theme and it was great Gladys having another chart shot, her 60's stuff and later 70's era were more to my taste but this gave her a chance to let rip and she's a flawless singer. D Mob's follow-up was much less annoying than Acieed, and Donna Allen was nice enough - it's not one that gets any radio exposure these days though. Queen's Breakthru is OK, never a major fave though. London Boys' is fun, catchy pop tune and obv I love It's Alright, amended a bit from the album version, a bit less in ya face than some Pet Shop Boys dance hits but classy. Patience I never liked tht much, GnR I prefer in rock mode for the most part.

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
always liked NERD stuff, and Rockstar is no exception, though a mere 7/10 as opposed to Shakira grabbing an 8/10, not quite up there with breasts like mountains. I always feel there's a hint of Cilla Black in the back of the throat-ness which will probably horrify! π Dirty Vegas I generally love, I entered 2014 flop Let The Night into BJSC as it was fab, and Ghosts is a definite 9/10 not quite up with Days Go By but a goodie. A Thousand Miles is hugely memorable and got a 7/10 from me, but I got a bit too much airplay of it over the years, which is ironic as most of the tracks from this era dont. Poor Darius still famous, as is Colourblind, though as I didnt watch Pop Idol I was never that fussed of the hits coming off the talent shows and rated this a mere 4/10. Narcotic Thrust dance choon though, dancefloor goodie and still sounds fab 9/10. Pretty much usually liked anything Will Smith from the 80's to the 00's, Men In Black II a fun film, still very watchable and Black Suits a fine 8/10. This mid-section is doing it for me, Doves a decent 7/10, Natalie Imbruglia and McAlmont/Butler (also a recent BJSC entry but not from me) both rate an 8 or 9/10, probably closer to 8. David McAlmont's voice is amazing when used on the right song, and the right song is Yes. Classic and stunning. The rest of the batch DNC bar Michelle Branch (3/10), Diddy (4/10) and George Michael's Human League revamp which I utterly loved. The video is hilarious, the sample terrific and yes there is no hook whatsoever, but I kinda like the animated journey and the teasing of thinking you are going to get a hook but don't really. 10/10.

Julian rates every 21st century Top 40 hit
Angie Stone classic β€οΈ 9/10. The original Backstabbers is 10/10, love it. Fischerspooner rings no electronic bell with me. Corner Of The Earth is very much a forgotten one with me not heard it since, but it got a top 30 rating from me (7/10) for Jamiroquai. Dee Dee I agree with an 8/10, though it's another I dont recall. It Just Won't Do was a dance club hit, though, so thats stayed with me, even though oddly it peaked lower (7/10 but it feels more like an 8/10 these days). Foolish I rated a lot, I liked Ashanti stuff for the most part and this one was the biggest, 9/10. Pet Shop Boys go a bit guitar-y shock album! This is my least-favourite of their albums (Release) and the singles were also a bit low-key, though obv they went top 10 for me. I Get Along gets an official 9/10 rating of the time, but TBH I'd knock it down to 7/10 I think. The video is much better than Home And Dry, though, rats roaming the Underground a truly bizarre choice. You can see them for free in any city if you go for a walk at night. I actually bought the video-DVD-version with the video for that one. The Gareth Gates/Beyonce and Bryan Adams tracks are all pleasant enough, I give 'em all a rating of 7/10, Bryan's the most forgettable with the Gareth Gates one the more memorable, I liked the tune. Alicia Keys, again pleasant enough but very much a 5/10 sort a thing. That leaves the also pleasant Darren Hayes for scraping a 6/10. That's a lot of mildly pleasant going on. The rest all DNC. π²

My record of the week 60 years ago
ahh my intro to Where Are You Now My Love is the 20 Golden Number Ones Of The 60's album I bought in late 1973, it's a good song, even if the record isn't necessarily a classic. I almost certainly would have liked the Freddie & The Dreamers track if I heard it, but it's not memorable. So, The Seekers' classic remains fresh as a daisy, very happy I caught the farewell tour with Judith's voice as pure as ever, still very fond of it.
