Dub Be Good To Me was good, happy to see it a hit, and Norman hip-hopping in to other genres, but it lacked the class and excitement of the SOS Band original just as Jam & Lewis were last-year's news as the UK dance scene moved on without them - despite classic tracks still getting released and huge hits in the USA. Black Box, meh, not in the same league as Ride On Time, but Lisa Stansfield proving she had a career ahead of her with another classy soul track. She very much appealed to older soul fans (like me) in a Barry White sort of vibe, but minus the White vocal style.

Love Will Tear Us Apart, acknowledged classic, and I liked it a lot when it came out, but after his death it became even darker for me. I wish there were cures for mental health problems, it's a curse for so many loved ones. 9/10. Bob Marley seemed to be alive and well when Could You Be Loved came out, and it was obviously one of his greatest tracks to that point. 9/10. I wish there were cures for all cancer too, another curse for so many loved ones. Babooshka was her most commercial single since Wuthering Heights, and the video was very popular with male students at Uni, def a big fave for me at the time, but not quite so mad on it these days 8/10. Joan Armatrading was always under-represented in the singles chart, but Me Myself I is a great catchy pop track, bangs along nicely 9/10. Wednesday Week is one of The Undertones best tracks, more wistful than they usually opt for 9/10. Yellow magic Orchestra was quite unusual at the time, it was quite good 7/10, but I dont know the other side, Firecracker. Phil's dark reference to Elvis was OK too, but preferred Lizzy, they have a real Killer coming up. 7/10. Neon Knights not exactly Paranoid, but then it set up said song for a hit re-issue so job done. 4/10. Change's double A, radio and me went for the Chic-channelling Lover's Holiday, 8/10. Glow Of Love I've never played much, and I bought the single! Emotional Rescue very much sounds like future Prince, but who influenced who?! I'm guessing earlier soul acts in both cases! 7/10. Lip Up Fatty another fun Bad Manners track, the sax is great. They were just warming up at this stage. 8/10. AC/DC's Whole Lotta Rosie is an older track finally hitting after Bon Scott died - at this point the band were more punk metal and Bon's vocals were great. 8/10. Gerard Kenny's Fantasy I never bought and recall it as a dull ballad but havent heard it in decades. 3/10. Bobby Vee had the original hit version in the UK and one of his great early 60's hits. He got his break after standing in for The Crickets when Holly died, so very appropriate he covered it, Leo's version is nice enough, but slowed down too much. 6/10. Leo is great in concert though, a bundle of enthusiastic energy. Detroit Spinners again on an un-needed mash-up, Cupid was covered reggae-style and way-better by Johnny Nash, keeping the Sam Cooke vibe. This was a little on the formulaic side. 6/10.

Sinead was and is a classic and deserved number one, head and shoulders over the rest of the top 10. Technotronic's is catchy dance fun but not as good as Jam, Lonnie Gordon is PWL tuneful but not one of their greats, Halo James poor-man's Johnny Hates Jazz, not a fave, Yell was a formula cover of a better record, Phil Collins was starting to get a bit samey and bland compared to some of his 80's hits, and Walk On By is a flawless song but the covers get worse with time. Dionne's is an all-time brilliance, love it dearly. The Stranglers had the next best version, and Sybil's rates about 3rd amongst the hit versions.

New Amsterdam is one of Elvis' best tunes, great melody, nice lyrics, 9/10. Had a proper record sleeve, unlike one of his previous that was deliberately inside out, plain white outside, picture inside (Accidents Will Happen). Xanadu is fabulous, 10/10, an unlikely collab that worked, and my fave single and number one as I left Uni for the last time - sad it was all over, and misery awaited for the next few years. No rose-tinted spectacles for me... The film is just a bit dull, by and large, as opposed to being bad as such. Gene Kelly's last fling really. Who Wants The World is decent Stranglers, 7/10, and we had no idea about the golden brown future. I've always found Play The Game a bit dull apart from the random synth bit 6/10. Splodgenessabounds though, the anthem of anyone that's been in a packed pub and can't get bloody served, great fun and amusing social observation 9/10 for Two Pints, Simon templar's a bit of fun and 7/10. 747 is Saxon's best record, Metalpop as it should be 9/10. A bit dangerous, a bit dark, a bit threatening, but catchy riffs and vocals. Bed's Too Big Without You is largely forgotten but the single version is pretty good, uptempo and urgent, 9/10. Waterfalls I adore, moving, atmospheric, synthy, minimalist 9/10. I also love that Paul's chosen singing style is emotional not pub singer. Jump To The Beat is great disco soul and better than subsequent cover versions. 9/10. There's a lot 9's in this bunch for me! Stacy did great for 13! I'm Not Your Steppin Stone is a comedy version from The Great Rock n Roll Swindle, I think, and they were scraping the very dead barrel by this stage but at least the song became a hit at last. The Monkees B side drips venom, ironically, and is a 10/10, while the Sex Pistols' is manufactured money-grabbing cash-in 6/10. That might seem the wrong-way round to some but it's true.... Odyssey's biggie is still popular, and a firm 8/10 from me, but they had classics before and after that were better, but not better-known. B.A.'s was quite sweet, he did enjoy his word-play, much like the Bard did, but I preferred the previous 3 bangers. Nice 7/10. My Way Of Thinking was a bit of a 4/10 snoozefest, but the Randy Newman cover was better, 6/10. Let's Hang On is not as good as The Four Seasons original, but it's OK as Darts career was about to fizzle. It is however better than a future Barry manilow version. 7/10. Rod's soul cover sucks all the soul out of it in favour of tedium. It was boring at the time, and it still is. 3/10 Makes Sailing and This Old Heart Of Mine, previous inferior attempts at covers, sound positively lively in comparison.

happy holiday Simon! I will not be using multi-hyphenate or any long words as I used to work for Local Government. "Keep it easy to understand" was the motto, before using many, many words like "Silo Culture" and starting sentences with "So". The former means not talking to colleagues across the organization about stuff and the latter means an attempt to sound smart while not sounding smart. So something to look forward to!

It's nice all these old songs and samples are hits for a new audience, but none of them have the quality of the originals, bar Sinead's drastic re-interpretation, which is a classic. Mantronix's is good, and the O'Jays sample is OK.

13th July 2025 It's a new number one as Loaded Honey's Tokyo Rain leapfrogs their single up to 3 - Don't Speak - and the darker album track Over up to 2. Jungle had multiple tracks in my charts many times, especially off Volcano, and what a fab album that was, but side-project Loaded Honey go one better grabbing the entire top 3. I just love the strings and laid-back melodic vibe, not entirely unlike (as AH Gold pointed out) Avalanche's Since I Met You from back in the day. All 3 of these tracks sort of following on from Jungle's album track chart-topper Good At Breaking Hearts with Lydia Kitto and J Lloyd both upfront and looking fabulous in the themed videos for tracks so far released. How rare is it for an act to hold the entire top 3 in my charts with new material? Very! ABBA's return with Voyage gave them 6 of the top 7 bar the number one spot in November 2021, and they had the entire top 3 entering on 7th Nov 2021. So this is only the second time it has ever been done. New entries this week, the highest is from Finn Forster, who I'd never heard of a week ago - I heard his track on Radio 2 and thought it was Teddy Swims. Broken Game is fab and in at 45. Rob Thomas has been absent for some time from my charts, solo or as part of Matchbox 20 - he topped my charts twice with Santana on Smooth and also with his band on Bent - sadly they never caught on in the UK in the late 90's and early 2000's. So it's a welcome return with the very upbeat and positive-sounding Hard To Be Happy at 62. The Jonas Brothers are back again just a few weeks after leaving the charts and while Joe Jonas is still charting at 28, this time it's a severe re-writing of The Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive and it's pretty good too, No Time To Talk at 66. I'm reading a bio of The Bee Gees written very well by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne - up to 8 this week themselves. Noah Cyrus gets a second dark ballad on the rundown, with Don't Put It All On Me entering at 75 in a collab with the AWOL Fleet Foxes, it's been a decade or so I reckon, but they suit the sombre mood of Noah Cyrus, and make it a little more melodic. I think this must be the first time that two sisters have charted 2 tracks each simultaneously in my charts! The Minogue Sisters almost certainly charted 1 each, though, many times. New at 84, The BossHoss return with added Arnold Schwarzenegger sampling and it's rather good! Yee-ha! I'll Be Back, indeed. Agnes isn't content with one top 10, she's trying for 2 with Milk. It's an odd word for song titles, and yet...Garbage, Doctor Feelgood with added Alcohol, and Milkshakes from Kelis and Go-Jo. Hi AH! 🙂 Well done on taking over the stereo at work, how can anyone not love saint etienne! I just bunged it on a CD of current stuff I love for one of my similar vintage friends who will prob enjoy most of it (like Loaded Honey) - I can usually guess what people will enjoy based on previous, and if they don't then they jolly well need to listen to it until they do!! 😄That's my motto, so boo on your workmates wanting the familiar but that's a common problem with ageing 😇 Talking of Loaded Honey, yes they are very like Avalanches, esp in the swirling strings/chords, and others of that era I also love. Sort of a cross between Jungle and Avalanches, with roots in 60's music thrown in to boot. Love 'em! Also fab you like Elliot, a friend put me on to him the other week, and I was very impressed, totally Chris Isaak. Roy Orbison. Yes, all very summer-sounding! Hello Jordan! 😎 Good chart as always, there's a few country tracks down the bottom end I havent heard yet, but lots to love. The US charts seems to be split four-ways these days: Pop hits especially those that never go away at the top end, rap, country and latin tracks, with a sprinkling here and there of Indie and dance. I'm guessing that's down to niche radio as much as streaming! Fab chart!😎

I certainly cant quibble with Good Vibrations as your Beach Boys fave - I was sweet 18 years old when that was a UK hit again and it topped my charts (and it's been back since) 😎Mystical Magical is Benson's best pop song I think, just joyous! Black-Eyed Peas I'm very happy that's back, it's my fave track by them and topped my charts - I even bought the album - and thought the video was stunning, shuffling along to it in Mykonos a video bar/club in Gran Canaria at the time with a beer in each hand (2 for 1 before 1am) 😄Mykonos is still there 15 years later, and the staff, but the videopicks not quite so great these days for me. Blessings is a dancefloor track, I dont really know Clementine that well but she is a good singer 👍 thanks for the picks and comments! 😎
