I have ordered my copies of the three 1980s books. The only question i have is why have they chosen to print the top 10 only of the compilation album chart as when it started in 1989 it was a top 20. Is this rectified in the later books?

Just to say i do have a recording of the last bit of this countdown, the Bruno Brooks show that counted down the last 16 albums and singles. I wish i could share this but (a) i am worried about infringing music rights and (b) i dont know how to convert a music file to a video file to post on a video sharing site. I am sure one or two people would be interested in hearing the recording and a little bit of history.
  4. I don't believe that 25 will sell as many for the simple reason it is not quite as good.

Thanks for that. Now 39 must surely be one of the strongest of all, with torn, never ever, angels, spice girls, steps, aqua, catatonic, verve, Louise, etc.

Just to point out that the 20th anniversary chart was part of a re-launch of Radio 1 which would begin broadcasting in stereo the next day, and broadcasting the 'correct' week's chart on the Sunday for the first time as well. As Radio 1 began broadcasting on 30 September 1967 this chart was (presumably) broadcast on Wednesday 30 September 1987. That means the chart broadcast on Sunday 4 October 1987 would have been the chart week ending Saturday 10 October 1987 (MARRS - Pump up the volume was at its second week at number 1). I wonder if the top 40 for w/e 3 October 1987 was ever broadcast therefore? Prior to this the singles chart had been released on a Tuesday not on a Sunday.

I couldn't find another thread on this but forgive me if I am duplicating. In 1987 for Radio 1's 20th anniversary they counted down the top 100 best selling singles and albums from the last 20 years (since Radio 1 had begun). After this you could send off a stamped addressed envelope and be sent the charts by post. Luckily I am a bit of a hoarder and in a recent house move I found these charts, would anyone be interested in me posting them? To be clear they are the Top 100 selling singles and 100 albums during the period Sept 1967- Sept 1987. On a related note I taped the last bit of the countdown on the Bruno Brookes show (the whole BB show not just the bit where he did the countdown), which was the top 16 albums and singles - and I still have the recording on cassette but with no means of playing it!

The album chart started on 28 July 1956 and this Sunday will be the 3,000th. Robbie Williams is currently the 1,000th number 1 album.
