I had hoped that someone would be listening to it for the first time to bring a fresh perspective. Mine is definitely coloured by hearing it so much so I have a rather nostalgic fondness for it. I do think it has been buried somewhat by the other bands that were around them at the time such as The Replacements or R.E.M. having greater commercial and/or critical success.

I could never stand It's Different For Girls. I had it on some new wave/punk compilation and I used to groan everytime it came on.

FYI The Farmer's Boys were a mid-80s indie band whose closest brush with fame was a cover of In The Country which made #44 Uy_47WBfI1Y

The tunes are awesome and the lyrics absolutely chock full of teenage longing and lusting. Lyrically the closest I can get to is an American Buzzcocks although musically they sound nothing alike. The Femmes recorded a few albums after this but nothing came close to this. From Add It Up to Gone Daddy Gone this was ubiquitous in indie clubs even as late as the early 90s. Made up of members of various bands around Leeds like Hookworms, Sky Larkin, it sounds like a whale of a time was had recording the album. And a whale of a time can be had listening to it. Top notch. UFO were the first band I ever saw live but that really was a forgettable song. WTF was Richard Jobson on? Looking like the campest blitz kid doing so incredibly poor dad dancing. No wonder Stuart Adamson pissed off to form Big Country in the end.

Ultraviolence was a definite come down after the amazingness of Born To Die. Sure there are some good songs on there but it doesn't come close to BTD. Or Paradise for that matter.

While not nearly as anticipated as other reformations/new releases from other shoegaze-associated bands I have a certain soft spot for this lot. They always sounded more like late-80s guitar bands like Buffalo Tom than their floor fixated brethren and this is probably why they weren't as successful as some of the others.
