Odd one from the BBC tonight - the dead duck France v already eliminated Poland match will be on BBC One meanwhile the Netherlands v Austria match will be on BBC Two.

  3. Tories have finally suspended the two candidates involved in the betting scandal.
  4. Of Monsters and Men and Friendly Fires were on my long-list - I junked Friendly Fires cos I thought they hadn't had a Top 40 otherwise would have been a few points more there. Oh well. Find it insane the Traveling Wilburys only had 1 Top 40.
  5. This a common myth. Balfour wasn't Prime Minister going into the 1906 election, the opposition had already formed a government and Henry Campbell Bannerman was Prime Minister going into the election.

That's some very late drama!! Scotland out, same old story for them.

Mathematically they can still go through as a best third side on 2 points if other games go their way in the rest of match day 3. That's why they're saying it might - but they'd be leaving an awful lot to luck. Realistically they need the 4 points, but mathematically they can still go through on 2 points which is what the commentators are referring to. As they said though they'll be playing to win.

BBC commentator making a embarrassing blunder there. They only got 2 points for a win in that 1986 world cup. So it's not 'the same format' even if it had the same number of teams. It got changed to 3 points in 1994 at the worlds.

  13. He has to play a far more proactive style of football in this match. I'd much rather watch the team attack and lose than sit through a repeat performance of the Denmark matches ultra-negative football.
  14. No wonder Reform are suing the company they hired to vet candidates. BBC has a nice round up of some of the most offensive stuff they've said https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/crggy73m2ero

Between this and the earlier game it feels like the refs have been told to get more cards out. Things must have been two free-flowing and like proper football for UEFA's liking.
  16. So in the first of these you crowned Frank's Chacksfield's Little Red Monkey as the tune of the combined 1952-1953 chart years. Now we move on to the second full year of the chart. Indeed let's see who the forums think should join it on the Song of the Year list. This year includes tracks from Doris Day, Frankie Laine, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole. It also features the first charting hit for rock and roll outfit Bill Haley and His Comet's with Shake, Rattle and Roll preceding their first No 1 by nearly a year. Will be interesting to see what rises to the top here. Rules: The song must have charted as a New Entry on the UK Official Chart (NME for this era) between the first chart dated 1 January 1954 chart and the 31 December 1954 chart inclusive. I've used the OCC website as the source for the eligible songs list - if you find an error please let me know and I'll post it in the thread for everyone to know about. As there are only 84 eligible songs due to the chart being a Top 12 and extending to Top 20 in this era voters should submit their 10 favourite songs. The first 10 songs will be taken from any longer lists submitted.Votes should be submitted by PM to myself - please do not post them in the thread.Songs ranked No 1 will receive 10 points, No 2 will get 9 points and so on.The deadline to submit lists will be the 5th July 2024 at 23:59Results will then be published on the 6th/7th July 2024.List of Eligible Songs 08/01/1954 - 7 - Frankie Laine - Blowing Wild (12 Weeks - #2 Peak) 15/01/1954 - 12 - Ken Macintosh - The Creep (2 Weeks - #10 Peak) 22/01/1954 - 11 - Dean Martin - That’s Amore (11 Weeks - #2 Peak) 22/01/1954 - 10 - Obernkirchen’s Children's Choir - The Happy Wanderer (26 Weeks - #2 Peak) 22/01/1954 - 9 - Eddie Fisher - Oh! Could have been so different but now looks like Georgia might be going out after that shocking miss. They've made so they can't be mathematically out after the Turkey v Portugal match through the draw though if I've got it right. So avoids the situation of every team except Georgia and Poland knowing they're through already thankfully. You don't really fancy them to beat Portugal.

It was the one he gave to the sub coming on I was confused, apparently it was faulty/missing equipment. (no shin pads or something?) Also minor thing but why do the BBC insisted on calling Czechia the Czech Republic - it's like calling France the French Republic, nobody should be.

What the heck was that yellow for?
  20. Ramones are an excellent shout - great to see them picked by 2 people as well. Might have ended up on my list had they come to mind.

Disallowed goal for Czechia due to a handball.
  22. It is, I noticed the error while doing the list - the place numbers are still right. Just forgot to delete the mistake when moving it up.

They need to win, if they lose and Portugal beat Turkey they'll be the second team out. At the point the 3rd round of group matches is going to be incredibly boring as everybody will just be playing for position rather than any real jeopardy.
  24. Okay even I think Southgate needs to go now. The idea that players who are playing in the Bundesliga, the PL or La Liga 'aren't fit enough' is utterly for the birds. I he's saying this to the press in public then what's he saying to the players in private - no wonder they've seemed unmotivated in these first two games. https://www.theguardian.com/football/articl...areth-southgate
  25. Yes indeed. Those rest days are between the group and knockouts so definitely a way to tell were at the latter stages. Tbh I quite like the wall to wall football of the group stages even if it's become less interesting since the expansion to 24 teams.
