They questioned the appeal of the Spice Girls discography, it was not just an opinion on a song !1! The Spice Girls and Little Mix both make girl band pop music, more context would have went a long way and I don't think people having an opinion on this make them snobs or elitists at all.

So I shared an opinion on... a bunch of songs? I’m not the most articulate gal so perhaps my original phrasing was overly broad, especially since I’m only familiar their singles and I actually do like a few of their tracks. But equally, I shouldn’t be under any obligation to explain why I’m not a fan of their material. Replace my initial quote with say, Ed Sheeran, Anne Marie, or any of the other forum’s resident punching bags, and not a single soul would bat an eye lid. The notion that I, as a Little Mix fan, have to hold the Spice Girls in high regard because they’re both female and make pop music is absurd and honestly a bit... icky? I’m not even claiming that LM’s music is objectively better than SG’s — I’m well aware that a lot of their albums are patchy at best — but I have fonder memories associated with their tracks and just generally... prefer it?

I’m going to leave it at that, because your general demeanour has been dismissive from the off and it’s all getting a bit

    for my liking.

  2. I'm well aware of those posts and I agree, I think they went too far. I even mentioned it in my previous post - we can do better than resort to snobbery. We can debate opinions without resorting to that. My post simply took issue with the accusation you made towards Jay, and I'm glad you've cleared up that quoting his post was a mistake.

I don't appreciate your final paragraph though. I've been extremely proactive in management against the constant tirade of anti-Little Mix posts from said member, including issuing warnings, and I was the one who created an entirely separate user group to ban him from the Little Mix forum entirely. It's a very unfair remark to be made because there HAVE been repercussions even if they're perhaps not completely obvious to you right now.

That’s all very well and good, and I certainly appreciate not having him clog up the Little Mix threads, but he still spams every other topic forum-wide even when they’re not relevant to the discussion. It’s exhausting and the sole reason I don’t venture out the LM AF anymore. If it's a 'constant tirade' like you said, and it's so demanding to keep him in check... just ban him? Any other forum would’ve dispatched of him years ago.

Regardless of the past I just feel it’s not cute to lay into a poster who isn’t even here to defend himself.

I know I’m pretty irrelevant in this conversation but since you quoted my post as an example of ‘gaslighting’, I’ll say my post really wasn’t meant to be mean or mocking. I say things like ‘imagine stanning x over x’ all the time. But I haven’t really said anything here I guess so I’ll leave it there

Know what I don’t find cute? Paragraphs of unhinged rambling and unbridled misogyny at every turn. :):) Besides, his absence is entirely self-imposed because of some maniacal crusade against ‘salty mixers’, so I think I’ll sleep easy tonight.

  3. Gaslighting? Definitely not. This is merely a discussion about songs and how people react to them. Or at least it should be. I don’t understand why it’s become this heavy.

^ Jay's original post on the subject, for the record. I think it's pretty clear that it's Jay's own opinion and he was expressing his surprise that anyone could miss the beauty of the track (which is an opinion that's shared with a LOT of people! which naturally makes the dislike seem quite noticeable). There's no gaslighting, that's a VERY strong term to use

Yeah, both of you are being deliberately obtuse and singling out Jay's initial post (which I admittedly shouldn't have quoted, since indeed it was an opinion and a respectful one at that). It's these responses that I took exception to:

This has to be a joke!? You don't see the appeal of the Spice Girls but stan Little Mix? Make it make sense

The point being made is that someone stanning Little Mix who have strong powerful 'girl power' anthems and are full of personality but then says Spice Girls do nothing for them is incredibly ironic because let's face it Spice Girls are THE prototype for that kind of girl band.

No offence but imagine stanning Reggaeton Lento and hating Viva Forever

Ah I see you like basic... fair enough you never had a chance you poor poor thing

My comment was referring to Defaze "not seeing the appeal" in the Spice Girls music when they like Little Mix so much, nobody has said that they have to stan them or that it's frowned upon not to.

It is a really bizarre and ironic thing to say when the Spice Girls paved the way for Little Mix's sound and image, and are idolized by them. If you're going to make a bold statement on a forum full of people, you should be ready for the response and not cry "opinion police"

You appear to be taking this seriously though when all people did was question your reasons (or lack thereof)

This without any context but italics for emphasis is a bold statement from a Little Mix fan. If it wasn't, then there wouldn't be so many posters asking why?

    Like, c'mon:

    *shares opinion*

*gets ridiculed, called basic and have said opinion discredited because of the acts I enjoy*

    *retaliates*

'we're just sharing our opinion no need to get so serious!'

That's... literally gaslighting? But screaam at you getting sanctimonious at the phrase 'gaslighting' being banded about when the resident forum cockroach 'Meekul' (or whatever f***ed alias he's assumed) has been allowed to spout incessant bile for 7 years without repercussions. That's where we draw the line is it?

  4. If it’s not that serious, why are you being so serious?

Opinions are being shared, that’s all! I don’t think I strayed into personal territory by expressing the fact that it surprises me that Viva Forever could be so disliked. Then I gave my point of view about why I think it’s great. I’ve not said you’re wrong or that you’re not entitled to feel what you feel! Doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to find it surprising.

Also you’ve been highly defensive over Little Mix in the past, so I don’t think you can really criticise fans of other girl groups for the same behaviour.

Yeah, the first part is verging on gaslighting now. This whole thing stemmed from me sharing my opinion (that's all!!), which apparently I had to justify because 'omg coming from a Little Mix stan'. How is that not personal territory? Literally playground mentality (par for course for BJ though).

The last point is just flat-out untrue. I barely engage anyone on here because of incidents like this. I've took exception to one particular user calling them instagram tarts and puppets which, y'know, any reasonable human being should object to.

You really think you're doing something with the incessant mention of 'Little Mix fan', don't you?

Why would I need to provide context? It's literally there in the quote. I don't see the appeal because it does nothing for me; it just doesn't stir up any strong emotions one way or the other. I can definitely see where the hysteria has arisen from though -- I'll be more vigilant with my formatting in future. ^_^ ^_^

How is saying 'I don't see the appeal' even remotely a bold statement? It wasn't even intended to be provocative -- I was literally an innocuous comment justifying why I'd ranked it last in a list of otherwise stellar entries. I don't even '''disdain''' Viva Forever; I just... don't care for it.

There seems to be a very specific subset of this forum that won't hear a bad word said about their favourite act, and it coincides very closely with stans of now-defunct girl groups (exhibit A: rabid GA loon drive-bying Zara in last round's reflection thread). It really really ain't that serious.

Ah I see you like basic... fair enough you never had a chance you poor poor thing

    Gross.

I always feel incredibly bewildered when Viva Forever gets hated on (by the 4 people on the planet who feel this way, who all happen to be on BuzzJack funnily enough :o There’s no one else who feels the same xox). I just can’t imagine being unable to appreciate such a beautiful song! :( Or at least be able to tell that it’s a great song, even if it’s not really your thing. To think it’s outright bad and feel a passionate hatred towards it, well that completely mystifies me.

A generational thing is such a poor excuse tbh especially in this thread when you're supposed to listen to all the songs. The Spice Girls songs sound no more dated than Madge, Britney and Gaga songs do I mean Just Dance (as fab as it is) screams 2008/2009 and the early 80's Madonna stuff is incredibly dated but don't sound any less amazing.

The point being made is that someone stanning Little Mix who have strong powerful 'girl power' anthems and are full of personality but then says Spice Girls do nothing for them is incredibly ironic because let's face it Spice Girls are THE prototype for that kind of girl band. Without them the likihood of LM existing (as Simon used a Spice Girls format for them) is slim. And I say this as a huge Little Mix, Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Spice Girls fan I love a good girlband me

Jesus Christ, what is with ya'll trying to police someone's opinion? I grew up when the Spice Girls were at their peak so the 'generational excuse' is moot. I just wasn't a fan of their material as a kid and don't care for it now.

I don't see how the fact that I'm a Little Mix fan is even relevant? The mentality that I need to stan every girlband that preceded them is reductive as f***.

    1) Little Mix - Reggaetón Lento (w/ CNCO)

    2) Britney Spears - Everytime

    3) Lady Gaga - Alejandro

    4) P!nk - f***in Perfect

    5) Ariana Grande - breathin'

    6) Katy Perry - Wide Awake

    7) Madonna - La Isla Bonita

    8) Zara Larsson - Don’t Let Me Be Yours

    9) Kylie Minogue - The One

    10) Rihanna - Rehab

    11) Dua Lipa - IDGAF

    12) Taylor Swift - Delicate

    13) Spice Girls - Viva Forever

1-8 are all incredibly solid. IDGAF is overrated as all hell and probably Dua's worst single for me. Delicate is zzzzz and (like most of Spice Girls' discography) I just don't see the appeal of Viva Forever at all.

The fact that you put one of Little Mix's worst songs at #1 and called Viva forever terrible...  :o

    Okay but where's the lie?

  9. So satisfying to see this bop get the chart run it deserves. I’m pretty excited for single 2 now — here for it being the ‘Rain on Me’ to Break Up Song’s ‘Stupid Love’. I imagine the support will be greater off the bat now that this has smashed.
  10. I actually like GA and felt bad consistently ranking them bottom, but I found the last three entries incredibly weak (no shade to the GA mods ofc — none of the recent themes exactly played to their strengths). ‘Crocodile Tears’ absolutely deserved to come last.

Robbie/Take That making it this far is nice to see. I’m not exactly familiar with their discography, but I found myself pleasantly surprised most rounds.

  11. 1) Little Mix - Towers

    2) Taylor Swift - All Too Well

    3) Kylie Minogue - Fragile

    4) Lady Gaga - Is That Alright?

    5) Britney Spears - Unusual You

    6) Ariana Grande - ghostin'

    7) P!nk - Runaway

    8) Madonna - Intervention

    9) Zara Larsson - I Can't Fall In Love Without You

    10) Dua Lipa - Garden

    11) Robbie Williams - Singing For The Lonely

    12) Rihanna - Cold Case Love

    13) Katy Perry - Not Like The Movies

    14) Spice Girls - Naked

    15) Girls Aloud - Crocodile Tears

This round was my first exposure to all these tracks bar 'Towers', oops. Some absolute gems in there -- 'All Too Well' and 'Fragile' come to mind. Honestly, I quite liked all of them bar the last four.

  12. Their trickle sales are always really impressive. I can easily see BUS going Gold by the end of the year at this rate.

'Only You' getting Platinum would be kinda' wild considering it was widely seen as an underperformance at the time. And HYD getting any certificate is long overdue.

  13. Oh, I wasn't trying to discourage chart discussion by any means — it was more a clumsy way of saying that it's done well and served its purpose regardless of its performance in the coming weeks. Any extra top 20 weeks is a bonus at this stage.

I unironically really like 'Boys Will Be Boys'. The subject matter is bound to help it stand out a bit more compared to the usual ballad affair.

'Garden' would be the less polarising choice, but it's also just a bit... mediocre.

    1) Sixteen (I know its objectively shit but I still bop so hard)

    2) Close to Me (see above)

    3) Power (I've heard it once; it's kinda' just a lesser 'Be The One' for me at the minute but I'm sure it'll grow)

    4) Worry About Me (it actually crept up on me quite a bit. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but it's not as irredeemable as folk make out imo).

    5) Flux (zzz)

    6) Hate Me (this isn't even enjoyable like the rest of the trash from this era. Just putrid through and through).

I'm more than happy with either choice. I do think 'Monster In Me' is probably the more interesting track, but 'Towers' just about edges it for me. That chorus melody is undeniable.

    Power to the people

    Watch it win

We're saving 'Power' for a later round. x

So we're pretty torn with which ballad to send for AF Round 7. Our main two contenders are Towers and Monster In Me (I'm officially vetoing 'Love Me Or Leave Me' on the grounds that it's shit compared to the above two, sorry Lee):

    vs

    All votes appreciated. :)

  18. Is there really much point fretting over a top 20 position at this point? It's done its job.

Everything about this release has been very reminiscent of 'Never Really Over' imo, both in terms of chart performance and in terms of rebuilding goodwill with the fanbase/GP after a string of flops. Here's hoping they build upon that momentum with single 2 and don't completely squander it like Katy did with 'Small Talk'.
