Mellope's favourite Christmas songs! It's that time of the year folks! Get wrapped up in a blanket, play the tunes, eat the mince pies and be in company :) so I thought what I Wonderful Time (In Christmas spirit ofcourse) to share some of my favourite Christmas tracks! Starting with my favourite Christmas song ever... Rockin Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee Release year: 1958 US peak: 1 UK peak: 4 Released back In 1958 and hitting US number one for the first time in 2023 thanks to the new music video 'Rockin Around The Christmas Tree' is the most remembered out of Brenda Lee's list of multiple number ones, Lee recorded the rockabilly song at only 13 years old! It started building up sales 2 years later at 1960. Why is this the best Christmas track? It has a groove that can make any generation dance and is a timeless classic! It's festive, fun and its old jam makes it a universal hit single! Love it! One song that equally deserves a replay is... You're Christmas To Me - Sam Ryder Release date: 2023 US Peak: Didn't Chart UK peak: 2 Released as a amazon exclusive in 2023 before being added to Spotify in 2024 after featuring in the Christmas movie 'Your Christmas Or Mine 2' the song became Sam's joint highest peaking song in the UK with his Previous Eurovision smash hit 'Spaceman' (Released in 2022) 'You're Christmas To Me' is also Ryder's second Christmas song after 'Jingle Bells' Why it deserves a spot on the list? It's feel good feeling shines like any other and after Sam got robbed from winning eurovision he deserves another shot to hit number 1- which he failed again :( (He's rumoured to take part in eurovision 2024 so possibly a third shot) anyway, back to the point! It's fast paced and correctly paced rhythm is what makes the song something bound to go viral and it was a clear option for a hit! One which should be bigger is.... Snowman - Sia Release date: 2017 US peak: Didn't Chart UK peak: 27 Released as part of Sia's Christmas album 'Everyday Is Christmas' 'Snowman' first charted in 2020 (Three years after released) it ended up proving as a Christmas staple charting in the UK at 2021,22,23 and 2024 and due to its swift climb up this year it's already looking to reach a new peak! Why does I deserve a spot on the list? It has uniqueness and also showcases Sia's talent really well with how long she can hold her voice! It's also something that really sets the mood for a great Christmas! Underneath The Tree - Kelly Clarkson Release date: 2013 US peak: 11 UK peak: 12 Showing up as a Christmas classic, and still being relevant over a decade later 'Underneath the Tree' was the first of many other Christmas songs to Chart for Kelly. The song repeaked in the UK at the week of 6th-13th of December 2024 and could climb to a new peak! It deserves a spot because it has to be the most upbeat Christmas song that gives an unforgettable feel good feeling! All in Christmas spirit! One More Sleep - Leona Lewis Release date: 2013 US peak: didn't chart UK peak: 3 With 47 weeks in the UK charts the X-Factor singer launched herself yet another hit single, this one is timeless. It's festive feel reminds me of 'Underneath The Tree' with it's upbeat pop energy and a very catchy hook. Christmas Drillings - The Sidemen Release date: 2022 US peak: didn't chart UK peak: 3 The second charting Christmas song in the UK 'Christmas Drillings' is a meme-rap song, as much as this is a meme and more of a anti Christmas song it's still funny and very catchy! I'm surprised it hasn't charted again. Sausage Rolls For Everyone - Ladbaby/Elton John/Ed Sheeran Release date: 2021 US peak: 5 UK peak: 1 Hitting Christmas number one 'Sausage Rolls For Everyone' continues Ladbaby's yearlu charity Christmas song, it became Lad's 4th number one single. It has the essence of all three artists packed into one fun Christmas song that all ages can enjoy! I think this is amazing! Merry Christmas Everyone - Shakin Stevens Release date: 1985 US peak: didn't chart UK peak: 1 Officially spending 100 weeks in the UK charts 'Merry Christmas Everyone' became Stevens fourth chart topper and still serves as a radio favourite for Christmas today! Its pop-rock creative sound really worked well for Steven's career and continues to boost his relevancy in music for now and for possibly decades to come! Merry Christmas - Elton John/Ed Sheeran Release date: 2021 US peak: 42 UK peak: 1 A second entry both by Elton and Ed, released through Asylum and Atlantic records. 'Merry Christmas' funnily enough got knocked off number one by a parody song of it called 'Sausage Rolls For Everyone' by Ladbaby after spending two weeks at number one. For me it has a twinkle of hope in the song and really has that Christmas spirit which I love! It's a great accompany to have the two on a song and it showcases them well! As proved because it charts back top 10 every year.

Kendrick and Dody6's 'Hey Now' is new at 5. 'Wacced Out Murals' sees Kendrick see at 4. Lamar and SZA's 'Luther' enters at 3. This has a trap beat along with rushed rapping that feels like it could have had better cuts; this is sloppy, and the hook doesn't hook me in... it feels weak. I'm also not trying to get a permanent ban from some of the websites I'm on, so I won't go into the tracks deep dive. 95 - Ma Meilleure ennemie - Stromae/Pomme (7/10) Previous first listen: Even though I don't speak the song's language, I can still tell that it's a passionate song, and I would even call it special; it fits an emotional scene perfectly and has that deepness and passionate side to it that Stromae and Pomme bring out really well! As much as this wasn't bad, I really cannot get into musical songs with acting. This year had a massive dish out of rubbish music, and it can't even be covered in a single top 10! Despite that, here are the top 10 worst songs of the year that you should avoid at all costs. 10TH PLACE - A** On Da Bus - Hitkidd/DaBaby Off-topic from Hitkidd, what a career fall-off this is for DaBaby, and Hitkidd, as the main artist, should know better than to get a children's song with voices that sound like they were modified to sound like children, saying, "A** on the bus go round, round, round." Modern-day rap c**p has really affected our brains like parasites because this is no exception to the brain rot. Seeing the album cover and the title reading 'Hitkidd For President,' I can tell this album is far from good. Seeing how America is going so far, I'm sure a lot of people would vote Hitkidd for president. 9TH PLACE - ICE CREAM RMX - Lil Godd Wow, making jokes about dg a* (only in the music video) and blasphemy 🙄 Of course, when you're this bad at rapping, you gotta stir up some controversy. Half of me is convinced that this is a joke song due to how bad it is, but I feel someone actually tried at this... either way, this is screaming disguised as rap, and apparently, this portrays the struggles of being a dg a*** and that he needs to do m***, and he's close to d****. This is far from an emotional song and one that makes fun of serious, dark times... I'm shocked that this is at #9. 8TH PLACE - The Spark - Kabin Crew This song somehow went massively viral this year and got praised... multiple asylum-seeker children come together to apparently "rap about their creativity," according to Wikipedia. They don't get a pass because they're kids; this is still a whiny song that couldn't even make a kids' bop album. I'm not going to go into the real production elements (it's bad) because they're kids, but I will safely say that this is ear-splitting to the ears and should have never been taken seriously as a song. I went light on them because they're kids, but seriously, just delete this. 7TH PLACE - Karma - Jojo Siwa I had to hold up the comments section to hide the music video because it's so cringe... 20-year-old (now 21) Jojo Siwa sings in a mysterious tone about how she was a wild child and that they always knew it before getting on top of another girl in a questionable way in the music video. Jojo Siwa found fame as a child dancer who sold bows in Walmart and dressed in all pink before starting her gay bad girl era, which gave her TikTok success once again... aaaaand it's dg cp. The lyrics remind me of if she was told in class, "Jojo, write a mysterious story for a presentation," and the lyrics try to be dark but are like a child who can't fully swear, so they use lighter words to emphasise their emotions. Judging by the production and her recent AI covers, it's safe to say that Jojo is tight on money when it comes to her music; either that or she's saving up for Christmas. 6TH PLACE - Women's World - Katy Perry Written and produced by men, one accused of being a r****t, 'Women's World' is supposed to be a strong stand-up anthem for women, as the music video shows women in bikinis, se*ualised, and transgender women (FTM), causing backlash. I'm really not surprised this flopped because it really showcases that Katy doesn't know how to make a track for its purpose. This is feminism, folks. I can't believe someone actually wrote all this down and thought it would be good for a music video... Seeing it's from the same woman who wore an upside-down red cross on her at a performance, we already know she's delusional or an attention seeker, but this crosses new territory with its glitchy sound and mainstream pop garbage. 5TH PLACE - A-Town Girl - Usher/Latto This sounds like a song that would be sung at a kid's Christian choir if it was completely clean. I can't even compare this beat... it's worse than industry pop... worse than most rap c**p... worse than 'Baby Shark' and 'Barbie Girl.' It's cringey and a song that should definitely not be track 3 on an album or even on an album. The autotune is painfully clear, and Latto's rapping takes away even more from the song... I can't believe this is actually a real R&B song. 4TH PLACE - I Choose V**lence - Jax Singer Jax, who is known for songs such as 'Hk Tuah,' 'Barbara, Your Husband Is Gay,' and 'Estein Didn't K*** H******' comes back to talk about the fact that bears are apparently much safer than men. She uses "words" such as "cleverer" in the song (That's not even a word). As much as this small-brained individual claims they're trying to make a positive change, every time she gets one piece of criticism after saying the dumbest thing, she rushes to TikTok and records herself crying about how hurt she is. For people who aren't familiar, the "Would you rather pick a man or bear?" trend comes from women saying that men are unpredictable and always a lot more horrible than women. They often compare this to stories about women who have had stuff happen to them, and they say, "It's not all men, but always men," often garnering hundreds and thousands of likes. [i'm describing it in the most family-friendly way I can.] The point is, everyone doing that trend is a delusional person who needs to get their head checked, and Jax is one of them. It's also a poorly written and ragebait track (at least I hope it's bait). 3RD PLACE - HAHAHA - Lil Dicky With the American rapper and comedian who mocks Jesus, takes his clothes off, and creates poor music just for an attempt at a viral moment, I wasn't expecting anything better, and I was right! This is TERRIBLE. He can't write, produce, or have flavour, and apparently, the music video for this cost $1 million... wow, what a waste of money! He's like drill music but somehow more simplified... he can't even have a steady rhythm, and this showcases on his whole 'Penith' album. This is so bad it has to be a joke because I can't believe he's still going from 2015. He's a clout chaser and a crazy man. 2ND PLACE - Jail (Part 1) - Lil Dicky PART 1?! DON'T TELL ME WE'RE GONNA GET A PART 2 OF THIS 😭 Yeah... my ears and eyes need bleaching out after this!!! ASAP. The story of the song is that he shows indecent exposure to an all-age group and ends up in jail, to which—let's just stop it there; it's too bad to mention here. Even if this is comedic, it's not funny at all and frankly just weird. This is a zero-talent song and will always be! There's no need to dive more into the same drill rubbish like 'HAHAHA.' Small Changes - Michael Kiwanuka - Mellope album review OVERVIEW: This is definitely a strong point in music! The alternative-indie and the wide range of instrumentals shown in unique lights is what makes me want to listen again; it starts with an amazing song and ends with still a tonne of hope for future releases! The downside is that sometimes you can't hear the lyrics, so the messages can come across blurred, but I don't think this is down to production quality; rather, it's the way the artist sings. Despite that, messages are still being spread throughout the whole album, and it equates to something meaningful. This is a good listen and a break from all the mainstream pumped-out music; the soulful side really shines through too! Give this a listen 100%! TRACK-BY-TRACK REVIEW: 1. Floating Parade (8/10) 'Floating Parade' makes you feel a relaxed, controlled atmosphere that works as a soulful start to the album; Michael's alternative indie uses drum and bass to add to the well-composed feel. The song speaks about seeking comfort in an uncomfortable situation, and it definitely shows this well! As a keen listener of unique music with a feel, this was top-notch! 2. Small Changes (6/10) The electric guitar with the keyboard and drums created a solid pop base to support Kiwanuka's voice, along with the song having a real substance that keeps the album's feel. 3. One And Only (7/10) This once again highlights the genius of Michael, with the guitar and bass creating the gentle pattern across the song. This is well thought out and just skilled. Directed by Barack Obama's daughter, this shows creativity and the album. 4. Rebel Soul (6/10) The catchy repeated chorus is the part that makes this song thrive, along with the wide range of instrumentals and backing vocals. Just like track 2, this isn't perfect, but it fits into the album tracklist well and solidifies itself as a place in the album. 5 & 6. Lowdown (Part I and Part II) (7/10) These parts merged well together and were something that I found quite pleasant, as we live in a world mainly made up of TikTok music. It's good to see real artistic essence here, like the guitar solo and rhythm of the track feeling just right. The lowdown parts are something that has soul and character; this really reminded me of deep, passionate, and well-made music. 7. Follow Your Dreams (6.5/10) This has a very dreamy beat that works well with Kiwunuka, and the production and mixing serve as a strong point with the instrumentals timed correctly and at the right pitch. This is the type of song to sit down and get inspired to, and it spreads the messages as said in the title. Great song! 8. Live For Your Love (7/10) The guitar melody was so unique and catchy; it sounded like something you'd hear in a country setting! The synthesiser worked well, and Michael's voice could've had more emotion in it (just like the other tracks), but the way he sings isn't bad; it fits the meaningful, deep, stylish vibe it's supposed to be, especially with the instrumentals! 9. Stay By My Side (7/10) The light piano and drums with the electric guitar were an interesting choice for a background base to a song like this, but Kiwanaku made it work! It has depth and spreads a message of wanting someone to stay by your side! This follows similarly to the rest of the album while bonding another unique story. 10. The Rest Of Me (6.5/10) This really had the synthesiser put to good use! This is a steady, worthy album track that has a well-engineered sound and is very natural apart from the few synthesiser hints. 11. Four Long Years (6.5/10) With a strong end to the album, 'Four Long Years' has a softer piano and drumbeat to create a lighter tone but with more feel. Kiwanuka talks about someone moving on from love and the fact that it's a shame, and Michael tones this incredibly well; the only negative is that it's hard to understand his words. I think the actual sound and the fact that it didn't use the 'boom bap' beat saved the song. What a weird surprise. You get the pass this time, Lil Baby, but this still isn't good. 53: Running Wild - Jin (4/10) Previous first listen: Jin poorly attempts to try and create a song that he thinks will be a western hit; on certain lines he sounds like he's nervous and gives the completely wrong energy. This K pop-rock single is produced by Gary Barlow; I personally don't get how Gary could produce something so Bar-low quality. They add unnecessary autotune to Jin's voice that doesn't even mend the track! Added: Every time I listen to this with the music video, I can't help but think, "How can people actually like this?" 41 - 2 Hands - Tate Mcrae (5/10) Previous first listen: This wasn't bad, but it didn't have the infectious mood that 'It's ok, I'm ok' gave; instead, it fell flat and felt like a weak second song announcement for her upcoming album, which was announced to come out on February 21st, 2025, called 'So close to what,' but '2 Hands' has a beat very similar throughout and lacks the fun, pop era. This is supposed to be bouncy and fun but comes across in a tired way. I don't have much for this; accept that it needs a boost and that this isn't it. It's plain and boring. 34 - Que Pasaria... - Rauw Alejandro/Bad Bunny (5/10) Previous first listen: 'Que Pasaria...' features on Rauw's new album and is a Spanish pop song with Bad Bunny. This for me isn't memorable, but I respect how they are not continuing along the traditional reggaeton and Latin routes that get boring and instead aim for something new; instead, they give their song a pulse that goes outside of the genre's roots. I suspect that next week it'll be a tight race to see if Christmas songs will go top 10 or if Shaboozey can even hold no. 1 ('Die With A Smile' is close to catching that song to). Apart from that, Wizkid has a new album, which could possibly see some new entries. Also, a few foreign artists, such as Manuel Torizo and Quevedo, have dropped albums, which could also possibly make an entry. For the singles releases, expect Ariane Grande, Rosé, Jack Harlow, and possibly Lil Nas X, Tyla, and Jelly Roll (if he's lucky). GNX - Kendrick Lamar - Mellope album review OVERVIEW: This album shows a stronger, rougher side of Kendrick with production that's bold, clear, and experimental in ways. This album may show as a step for this decade of rap with some of the tracks, such as 'Sqaubble Up,' which has a Funk side and features multiple pop-R&B segments from SZA as well as from smaller LA rappers. This harsh, gritty, well-layered album shows Kendrick isn't afraid to speak out about what he wants to and that he can still make great music over a decade into his career. I thought this was a real hook for the end of 2024, and Lamar has once again taken the rap industry by storm; this has some memorable moments of the year. I have a lot more to say though in the... TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW: 1. Wacced Out Murals (7/10) Starting off with a rough, powerhouse of a song that immediately grabs attention and spreads Kendrick's harsh essence across the track, the track talks about legacy and speaks volumes, which I admire, and the production was bold and made it a great atmosphere to start off 'GNX.' What a wish for better. Instead of just using the boom-bap beat on the West Coast rap, it had more flavour instead of just sharpness. 2. Squabble Up (9/10) WOW!! 'Squabble Up' uses the same snippet that started the 'Not Like Us' music video to start this song, and this is an all-round flavour punch that infuses character, something new, and a bit of everything to make this a mega-catchy song. It has an old-school swing to it that adds to its catchiness while not making this a radio song but still making this extremely universal to listen to and setting new boundaries in rap music. This is a great follow-up to 'Wacced Out Murals' and really shows a strong point, not just in Kendrick but possibly in this decade of rap. 100% expect to see this in my most streamed. 3. Luther (6/10) 'Luther' is a conscious hip-hop/soul song with additional vocals and writing from R&B star SZA. The song follows the traditional boom-bap routes while having a nice landing for both Kendrick and SZA's vocals with strings and a structure that builds the song. The main problem for me is that the song doesn't do too much though and just follows a rhythm that doesn't sound like it has enough flavour, especially to be a main track. Nice try, Kendrick, but you can do better. 4. Man at the Garden (7/10) This poses as a song that makes you think and has meaning to it while fitting into the album structure; it's speaking out and taking leaps and risks to get you to the place you are, which is what Kendrick is doing today still. I admire this, and it makes the listeners think and really builds a new thought that 'Man at the Garden' shows. 5. Hey Now (7/10) With production from 'Not Like Us' producer Mustard 'Hey Now,' this is very experimental and provides a sound that can't easily be replicated or unheard of. This features vocals from LA rapper Dody 6, who gives a clean, fresh sound at the end of the track that doesn't merge the energy's wrongly but instead fits aside Kendrick and runs the rest of the track smoothly. 6. reincarnated (6.5/10) Sampling 'Made N*****' by 2Pac delves deeper into meaningful rap music. It starts with a Spanish poem to start the song and moves into a gritty main rap with plucks of a guitar in the background that sound unique and centre it out from other rap songs. With Kendrick continuing his wide range of sounds in his songs, it's safe to say the production level is continuing its peak with the raw, infused voice that is Kendrick Lamar. 7. TV Off (6/10) With its high, well-produced beat by Mustard, Kendrick continues his high, intense energy, as this shows that there's more to come. This is a good track but not an album highlight for me. 8. Dodger Blue (6/10) With vocals from Roddy Ricch and other rappers, 'dodger blue' continues the sharp lyrics with the 'gnx' album style. The features were well chosen, and this song works well. 9. Peekaboo (7/10) Bringing in some of that style that sounds a bit like 'Sqaubble Up,' Kendrick creates a hard-core song that combines Gangsta Funk to create something that has a real flow and creativity to it with a hook that gets stuck in your head within a single listen, 'Peekaboo' doesn't disappoint. 10. heart pt. 6 (7/10) Continuing his 'The Heart' series, Kendrick mixes his more conversational delivery with emotional rap, which works as a fitting side to the album. The series showcases Lamar's views on life at the moment, a strong song that says a lot. 11. gnx (7/10) Continuing his bold, fearless style, this track brings out the drums with quality soul-rap and showcases this album's style extremely well, once again another song that certainly didn't miss. 12. Gloria (6/10) With an alternative R&B kick from SZA, 'Gloria' delves into love and also marks SZA and Kendrick's 6th collaboration together. This ends the album on a slower moving song that hits the right notes and gives the right laid-back feel to end the album on; it didn't go above and beyond for me, but it definitely was clear and a good move to put here. 'Happy' - Jin - Mellope Album Review OVERVIEW: 'Happy' is an album that has very mediocre music and highly lacks anything new. This is a cheap, throwaway album that desperately tries to be something, but the k-pop/rock sounds like something made for children. Multiple times Jin's vocals don't feel connected to the audio, and the production feels incorrect or out of creativity. The most impressive thing here is a feature. As someone who likes a lot of BTS (solo careers and as a group), this very much was a disappointment and makes Jin a weaker link of the group's solo careers. This album is just another K-pop one and has a few compositions that make you feel like you're the only person who attended your own birthday party. It's a low-effort album. The music video is cringeworthy and then tries to have a fun edge to it, which isn't fun at all, and this honestly has no spark. I physically still feel the droopy, boring tone after I turned this off. Hearing this has ruined my day. Jin is a member of the famous south Korean k-pop band BTS (Bts members have had my most streamed song of 2022 and 2023), but this is really a miss for Jin; it's a poor attempt at trying to create an anthem that will be remembered as that number 1 moment when this'll be remembered as a flop. This had rock in it, but it still doesn't separate this from being like any other boring K-pop song, and I notice how he sings it like a poor actor; he's like someone in an advert who has to pretend they care about the product. Go on, attack me. BTS Army, what are you going to do? Chuck a purple heart cushion at me. Yeah, skip this and don't listen to this guys fanbase either; there are like Taylor Swift fans. And as much as this tries to make you feel loose and chill, it's honestly something that will make a blind person hurry to hit the off switch. 3 - Another Level (5/10) This went for a more booming atmosphere to make it a strong track, but the production sadly feels slightly off with its choices; the layers feel smudged, and the only thing here that's kind of good is the guitar rock solo. 4 - 네게 닿을 때까지 (falling) (5/10) This sounds very basic and really lacks anything that keeps the Army wanting more, so I'm shocked they do. Jin's melody gets so boring when his voice is the exact same way on every track, and yes, I know he changes up sometimes, but for the most part, I'm sick of this; it lacks energy and sounds like something you'd hear at the cheap children's event. 5: Heart On The Window Ft. Wendy (6/10) I liked the flow on this more; Wendy's female voice really added life to the song, and that's what made my score higher. This is something I wouldn't mind being put on. The background has a small kick to it, and the mixing feels clean and layered well! 6 - 그리움에 (I Will Come To You) (5.5/10) 'I Will Come To You' is a bittersweet piano song that showcases a more lower-pitched side of the album. The lyrics are touching and are delivered well, but I feel it goes nothing outside of Alright; he made all the necessary steps to a song, and this is acceptable, but it doesn't really have anything to make it go above and beyond. BEST: 'Heart On The Window' Ft. Wendy WORST: 'I'll Be There' ALBUM RATING: 3.5/10
