Expansive, existential, and beautiful, a slight hint of optimism amid a very introspective, melancholic record. This is Doves' second charting song from this album (after "Renegade", peak #5), and their fifth charting song overall, after "Carousels" (#1 for 2 weeks), "Prisoners" (#3), and "Broken Eyes" (#5) all from their previous album, 2020's 'The Universal Want'. 28 Cheekface - "Living Lo-Fi": I'd never heard of this band until my partner flipped the recommendation my way. Lots of fun lead single from their recently released fifth album, 'Middle Spoon'. A blend of Mountain Goats, Pavement, and Spoon is what I'm hearing. Album seemed kinda front-heavy, and such whimsical goofy jangle pop isn't usually my go-to, but I'm intrigued by this, their first charting track. 30 Royel Otis - "Oily Heart": This band was one of my favourite discoveries last year, and have been churning out banger after banger. A quirky, summery, ball of fuzz, it's a bit different from some of their previous tracks to have grabbed me, but I'm happy to chart it to see if it grows on me. (If not, might be a quick stay, as the bubbling under list is full of some heavy hitters). This non-album single is their fifth charting song, after "Heading for the Door" (#13), "Sofa King" (#1 for 3 weeks in April 2024), "Claw Foot" (#9) from their 2024 album 'Pratts & Pain', and the non-album "If Our Love Is Dead" (#1 for 2 weeks in December 2024). Someone on indieheads mentioned that their music makes them both happy and sad, and that seems to track. Hasn't hit me as hard as most of their previous singles. Previous charting tracks include: "A Hero's Death" (8th) and "Televised Mind (9th) from the 2020 'A Hero's Death'; "Skinty Fia" (4th) off of the 2022 release of the same name; and from the dynamite 'Romance' from 2024, "Starburster" (8th), "Favorite" (10th), and "Here's the Thing" (2nd, 2 weeks). 29 The Wombats - I Love America and She Hates Me : Their seventh charting track as well. I've enjoyed their work since catching them as an unknown to me at Osheaga Festival in 2016. Have given the new album a couple of listens this week and this is one of the standouts for me among the tracks not previously released as singles. A grower, and the second charting song from "Oh! The Ocean", after "Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want To Come" (22nd). This is their seventh song to chart, after "Lemon to a Knife Fight" (12th) and "Turn" (5th) off of 2018's 'Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life'; "Everything I Love is Going to Die" (19th), from the early 2022 'Fix Yourself, Not the World'; and "Is This What It Feels Like to Feel Like This" (22nd), "Dressed to Kill" (19th) from the late 2022 EP 'Is This What It Feels Like to Feel Like This'. So excited for this release, but a bit apprehensive as well. Loved "Renegade" but wasn't feeling "Cold Dreaming" as much, and "Saint Teresa" I'm still out on. Will be interesting to see if, with Jimi not going on tour with them this time out, this will also lead to his vocal contributions being walked back as well. I spin the first three records regularly ("Some Cities" and "Lost Souls" particularly draw me back), and their other two releases are both very solid. They've always been an "album" band rather than "singles" for me, so I can't wait to hear the finished product all the way through.

An art-pop banger and I'm loving the industrial aspects of it. My favourite of hers for quite a while. Understand that it's been a bit polarizing, and can definitely see how the nonsense can grow a bit tiresome, but it hasn't yet! 27 Japanese Breakfast - "Mega Circuit": The second single off of J-Brekkie's forthcoming fourth album 'For Melancholy Brunettes (and Sad Women). While "Orlando in Love" was a great introductory setting-the-scene track (which plays like a 'Jubilee' just-missed-the-cut song), "Mega Circuit" is more reminiscent of material from her second album, and hopefully indicative of what the rest of the project will resemble. "Mega Circuit" is her sixth charting song after "Essentially" (number one in July 2019), "Be Sweet" (a record-tying five weeks at number one in April-May 2021), "Posing in Bondage" (#6), "Savage Good Boy" (#12), and the still charting "Orlando in Love". 29 Ben Kweller (feat. Waxahatchee) - "Dollar Store": an emotional indie-Americana track of recovering from loss and despair, building to an emotional release. Beautiful harmonies in the chorus. This is Ben Kweller's first charting song, while Waxahatchee (in a supporting role here) has been a chart mainstay over the past few years. 'Saint Cloud' and 'Tigers Blood' were such fantastic records, and this song could have easily slid onto either. 30 Chloe Slater - "Sucker": This is the third single off of her recently-released EP 'Love Me Please', and her first charting song, a salty song of frustration in pushing back against blind faith in the American dream. Reminiscent of Courtney Barnett, Stella Donnelly, Wet Leg, and other such slacker-ethos indie songstresses. Gave the EP a listen yesterday and very much enjoyed it. Excited to hear more! Hey folks; this is my first attempt at posting a chart on BuzzJack. Been charting off-and-on since the mid-90s, with the current iteration dating back to November 2016. That means this is week 428! A gorgeous, ethereal ballad, the likes of which have done well previously. Hopeful for an album announcement to follow. - #28: Momma - "I Want You (Fever)" -- This is the fourth charting song from Momma, the most recent being the recently-departing-the-chart "Ohio All the Time", which peaked at 13. Previously, "Sunday" made it to #13 as well in the fall of 2023, while their highest charting song was "Bang Bang" which made it to #8 in he spring of 2023. (I was very late to the party for "Speeding '72", which is an absolute fuzzy banger.) This track took a week to grow on me but in the end I'm a sucker for 90s-era nostalgia sounds, and will always be drawn to acts like Momma. - #30: The Horrors - "More to Life" -- Surprisingly to me, this is their first entry into this iteration of the chart. They have had three different tracks bubbling under previously. I find that The Horrors are very hit or miss for me: the songs that hit, I run into the ground ("Still Life", "Change Your Mind") and those that don't I rarely revisit. An artist that I listen to individual songs rather than full albums. "More to Life" feels like it will fall into the former category. A few more listens will be in order. UNDER: Kind of like an under consideration list.
