  1. I know a lot of people seem to favour it, but I just think requiring record companies to nominate singles in some way would be a retrograde step.
  2. U2 had Number One singles in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Steps announced their split on Boxing Day 2001. This is a boring factual post.
  3. If even she doesn't believe it, surely that's not so much revelation as speculation.
  4. 'Sonnet' was released as a limited-edition 12" single in the UK. I think it may have been officially ineligible but there were only 1000 copies anyway. It did indeed sneak into the Top 75 due to an import CD single so yes it's a fair bet that it would have been a significant hit had it been widely available. Incidentally, I also have an import 7" of 'Here's Where The Story Ends'. On the other hand, the Stone Roses weren't that big when their album came out so I doubt their album tracks would have made much impact.
  5. Half The World Away wasn't an album track, it was a B-side. And it became famous years later when it was used in the Royle Family so I don't know whether it would ever have had concentrated enough streams to go Top 10.
  6. Glen Ballard co-wrote all the music on Jagged Little Pill and co-produced it. I don't really approve of producers getting co-writing credits, but I know some of them do.
  7. But that's the point - lots of people, probably most people, aren't particularly interested in music. It's not compulsory.
  8. If by recently you mean "the last 65 years" then I completely agree with you.
  9. I have to admit Vid has some semblance of a point in that the singles from the Stormzy album are very much on the more aggressive, confrontational side side so I've seen a lot of people be surprised at how many ballads there are. I still don't really agree with his original point but I will acknowledge that.

Well, Clannad have more chance of getting on the playlist now.

Paul Weller's album is just a soundtrack though, I think there's only one actual song on it.
  12. I thought it already had.

The OCC don't run certifications though do they? The BPI do.
  14. I hate all their songs, but I remember Jeremy Vine getting into trouble for playing that one during a discussion on Radio 2 about a zoo feeding one of their giraffes to lions.
  15. To be fair, I suspect a lot of people are just buying the first version they see. Is the radio edit even on iTunes? I think it might have been a rather smaller hit if it didn't have that "lager lager lager" bit in it.
  16. Apparently when she heard that song she sent them all signed pictures. Which is quite sweet really.

The Essential Paul Simon changed record labels in 2012 (he moved all this solo catalogue from Warner to Sony) so presumably that's why they haven't been combined.
  18. Can't believe they made into a film. But I know Hollywood is short of ideas these days.
  19. Well I've gone ahead and done the playlist. Not everything is there but allowing for EPs and double A-sides I'm up to 422 tracks: https://open.spotify.com/user/nowthats/play...rxIdPNC8mwg9uXl I'll have to remember to take Little Mix off if they ever make the T40.
  20. I was going to mention 'Motorcycle Emptiness' but I don't want to pre-empt too much of a future thread.
  21. Oh, go on then: 99. THE XX- XX (37-59-70-72-83-95-99) 560,200 (T/S 603,100) 92. ONLY REVOLUTIONS- Biffy Clyro (26-39-49-59-71-87-92) 604,900 (T/S 728,700) 89. 22. I didn't know about If You Wanna Party, although I do know it's a re-recorded version of a song originally called 'Pass The Toilet Paper'. I remember Mark Goodier once playing the semi-clean version of 'Boom Boom Boom' on a chart show, though I think that was a one-off. I know another station got into trouble from Ofcom for playing the dirtiest version of that.
  23. I remember there was some confusion there because in the radio edit he says "kiss" instead of the d-word, but he also says "I've got some Thicke for you". On the other had I remember it took ages for somebody to notice and remove the f-word in 12:51 by the Strokes. And radio stations were playing the version of 'Who Are You' by The Who with an F-word for about 30 years before anyone noticed. Then there's 'Happy Talk' and 'Hey Jude' which have never been edited.
  24. Well, I've narrowed it down to a Top 12 so far: Jambalaya Fats Domino Letting Go - Paul McCartney & Wings Tempted - Squeeze Julie Ocean - Undertones Love Peak - John Lennon Flesh Of My Flesh - Orange Juice Patio Song - Gorky's Zygotic Mynci Lazy Line Painter Jane EP - Belle & Sebastian [Lazy Line Painter Jane; You Made Me Forget My Dreams; Photo Jenny; A Century of Elvis] Hip Hop - Dead Prez Real Great Britain - Asian Dub Foundation Be My Enemy - Departure
  25. Thanks. I'm trying to compile a Spotify playlist but I've only done the 60s so far.
