  1. Three of those tracks are from 1991, so you're certainly not older than me! (Pedantic note: I know the original version of 'Sit Down' was in the 80s, but you can't get that version any more).
  2. Does depend how specific you are about the question. I listen to a lot of music from before I was born but I'm so ancient that I'd acquired a lot of it before you even could buy downloads. And even now I don't download individual oldies that often, mostly I buy whole albums or compilations. Two I do definitely remember though are 'Woodstock' by Matthews Southern Comfort and 'Stardust' by David Essex. I wonder if I'm the first person ever to have mentioned either of those songs on Buzzjack?
  3. I might, but I don't particularly. I'd rather mention that the Isley Brothers employed Jimi Hendrix before he was famous.
  4. I MONSTER - Dean Honer was/is also a member of All Seeing I ICICLE WORKS - Chris Sharrock's name is misspelt the second time. He also drummed with The La's, Lightning Seeds, Oasis and Robbie Williams. Ian McNabb had some solo success. IDLEWILD - Allan Stewart also joined as second guitarist in 2005. FRANK IFIELD - Sometimes identified as an Australian, though he was UK-born IMAANI - Was also the vocalist on the hit by Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy, but I'm not sure she was an offical member of that act or not. IMPERIAL DRAG - Roger Manning (Jr) was also a member of Jellyfish. IMPERIAL TEEN - Roddy Bottum is also a member of Faith No More INDEPENDENTS - Mike Read was also a member of One World Project INTASTELLA - Spencer Birtwistle was also a member of the Fall for a while. INTERPOL - Paul Banks and Daniel Kessler were both born in the UK, though they grew up and formed the band in the US. ISLEY BROTHERS - The line-up on all the Sixties hits is Ronald, Rudolph and O'Kelly - the other three only joined after that. O'Kelly died in 1986. Great stuff otherwise. Especially as looking that up I discovered there's a new Idlewild album coming.
  5. Here's my notes for the rest of H: HERMAN'S HERMITS - Peter Noone also had one solo hit KRISTIN HERSH - Strings is an EP with the following tracks - A Loon; Velvet Days; Sundrops; Me And My Charms THE HIGH - Andy Couzens was a founding member of the Stone Roses HIGH FIDELTY - Sean Dickson was previously the frontman of the Soup Dragons LAURYN HILL - Is the daughter-in-law of Bob Marley (or would be if he was still alive) HILLMAN MINX - Were a vocal/instrumental group with a male lead singer (I know, I saw them live and have their one other single). HIM - Stands for His Infernal Majesty HOLE - Melissa Auf Der Maur also had solo hits and was nominally a member of the Smashing Pumpkins DAVID HOLMES - Title of his last hit is '69 Police' HONEYCOMBS - Honey Lantree's real name was Ann HOOSIERS - Martin Skarendahl is Swedish apparently. Extra trivia - the other two had the drummer from Sailor as their chemistry teacher at school. HOPE OF STATES - Original member Jimi Lawrence d. 15 Jan 04. NB, the original title of their debut hit was 'Enemies/Friends' but I agree that it would look like a double-A if you wrote it that way. HOT CHIP - X-ref to Joe Goddard's solo hit HOUSEMARTINS - Dave Hemingway only joined in 1987 (ie after their two biggest hits). Hugh Whittaker was the original drummer. HOXTONS - Were originally called Hoxton Whores until they had to clear the sample. HUNDRED REASONS - Correct title for the lead track on EP2 is 'Remmus' HURRICANE #1 - X-ref Andy Bell to Beady Eye, as well as his other acts. Second chart run of 'Step Into My World' was a remix - this was also the version that reached the higher peak. MARY HOPKIN - was formerly married to the producer Tony Visconti She was also a member of album chart act Oasis (obviously not the same one Andy Bell was in). Apart from that great stuff. I've learnt a lot.
  6. I don't think it was any better, it was just first.
  7. Buble hasn't got anything to promote this year though has he? I doubt he'd come all the way over here just to do X-Factor.
  8. Have you forgotten the classic that was 'Jingle Bells (Bass)' by Basshunter?
  9. Paul Weller might be flattered by the implication that he's that young though.
  10. I know that's what it's supposed to mean, but I do think that was a poor way to phrase it and I think the replacement was a good idea. Although you could argue (as indeed many people have) that the very title 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' is dubious in the context of most Africans not being Christians.
  11. Pop fact - my uncle knows somebody whose name is (presumably) in Tracey Emin's tent.
  12. But to be fair, there are plenty of people on the 1984 version who aren't stars any more, or who went into obscurity and came back to some extent. For younger listeners, Marilyn is also the ex-boyfriend of Gavin Rossdale, who was the lead singer of 90s band Bush and is now married to Gwen Stefani.
  13. Is it just my imagination or is that a bit of an arrogant-sounding title, even in places where she's actually had multiple hits?
  14. At least they gave you 18 months to get your money's worth from the original version. Most of these reissues only take about half that long.
  15. It's from the soundtrack to something. Hope it's better than 'Atlas'.
  16. I actually can imagine that there are people who've heard 'All Of Me' but weren't listening closely enough to realise who it was by until they saw him sing it on the telly. Oh, and would putting 'Red Right Hand' in an advert be any odder than using it in Dumb & Dumber?
  17. Was that intentional or a Freudian slip?
  18. Just realised I forgot to post my notes from last week's bit: PJ HARVEY - Her middle name is wrong on 'That Was My Veil' TONY HATCH - = Was married to Jackie Trent 1966-2002 ANNE HATHAWAY - Link hit to Les Miserables? CHESNEY HAWKES - Len Hawkes is better known as Chip RICHARD HAWLEY - His Top 40 hit 'Tonight The Streets Are Ours'. He also has a long association with Pulp, though he's officially a session musician on those hits he appears on. ISAAC HAYES - I think 'Shaft' in 2000 was a remix - can anyone confirm? HAZZARDS - Were formerly called Ukes Of Hazzard, until lawyers got involved. MAX HEADROOM - Spelling of 'Paranoimia' [not a real word, I know] HELL IS FOR HEROES - Spelling of Will McGonagle. He and Joe Birch were previously members of Symposium JIMI HENDRIX EXP - All three are now dead CASSIUS HENRY - Clarify when he was on Voice [ie that it was after his hits]? Will catch up with this week's later.
  19. Surely if 'Open Wide' was released before the album, that's effectively a single release though?
  20. Ne-Yo hasn't had his biannual one either.
  21. Speech Debelle wasn't a popular choice of winner but then neither were M-People (for almost directly opposite reasons admittedly). People used to know who'd been nominated, even if they didn't approve.
  22. And in the last couple of years I notice the whole prize has got a lot less attention than it used to. Basically, Alt-J have ruined it for everyone.
  23. Yeah, comparing sales over different months or even years is silly (though in fairness most people in this thread obviously know that and are just playing along) I suppose it's a song that sells more than the Number One singles in the weeks immediately before or after - or even both - that might fit better. Puretone is a good example of an unlucky one, although not because of the scheduling itself, but because of the leaks.
  24. Historical precedent is that they will play it with the minimum possible fuss - that's what happened with 'War' by The Ugly Rumours and 'Defenders Of The Land' By George Bowyer - I suspect I may be the only person who remembers that.
  25. Speaking of death, Marvin Hamlisch died 6-Aug-2012 [longer ago than I thought] George Hamilton IV died just over a month ago on 17 Sep 2014, though you may have this date already. Ashley Hamilton is an ex-stepson of Rod Stewart. I have to admit it was only when I looked it up that I realised George Hamilton (Ashley's father) wasn't the same person as George Hamilton IV.
