AF IDOL 2.0 | Britney Spears DISCUSSION THREAD
'Boys' is another single that's a remix! I prefer it to '(You Drive Me) Crazy' personally. (I don't know 'Amnesia')

AF IDOL 2.0 • Ariana Grande Discussion
Oh no this was going to be the time for 'Touch It'??? (I tend to forget which 'Dangeous Woman' tracks were technically deluxe-only because Spotify just had the one edition) Sad to see her eliminated on such a great song. Not 'Beauty And The Beast' being a more successful song choice than 'God is a woman' :')

AF Idol • Your Voting Stats
I considered this but thought it'd make it very uneven if, say, #1 in round 1 is worth twice as much as #1 in round 8! So my points table goes the opposite way and gives 26 points to #1 each round :P My update: A long-awaited return for Katy (and Ariana) into my votes  Some non-favourites entered for Britney/Rihanna mean my top 4 are now all level on 7/9!

AF Idol 2.0: Round 9 • V O T E
1. P!nk - Who Knew 2. Madonna - Frozen 3. Kylie Minogue - All The Lovers 4. Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble 5. Ariana Grande - God is a woman 6. Katy Perry - Hot N Cold 7. Dua Lipa - Break My Heart 8. Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) 9. Little Mix - Black Magic 10. Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande - Rain On Me 11. Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There 12. Britney Spears - Oops!...I Did It Again This was actually easier than I expected before I saw the list as there's a clear 6 I love - if we'd ended up with, say, 'Disturbia', 'Move' and 'Spice Up Your Life' (from songs also considered) that would've been painful :drama: Wish I could vote Dua though as that's one of my favourites of hers. I looked through the whole thread to see if I had the exact same vote as anyone else since that felt possible with only 6 songs, but no :') Maybe next round. (I'd be tempted to spreadsheet the whole thing and see if there are sets of 6 songs numerous other people have in common but I won't intrude on the results :kink:)

'Stuck With U' as well, not bad but the weakest link here I feel.

AF Idol 2.0: Girls Aloud Discussion
One week later... Nicola's album has appeared on Spotify here for, I believe, the first time! :o I choose to believe it's somehow related :') Edit: oh actually, it was from the 'Pop Activism' twitter account for the record: @1266489897541677058

P!nk Singles Rate
I don't normally do artist rates but there's only a small handful of songs I lack familarity with and AF Idol has made this feel quite relevant so I'm interested! Can I make a case for Australian radio single 'Cuz I Can' to be worth including? :kink: It's not a minor technicality of having been 'sent to radio'; it reached #2 on the Australian airplay chart, and should've been a genuine chart hit but was prevented from charting. It charted 33-34-27-17-14-15-23-23-26-34-32-26-35-28-40 on the digital tracks chart, and this was after the album had spent 14 months straight in the top 10 (the reason it was excluded from the main chart was at first due to digital-only singles being ineligible, but that rule changed in its 2nd week; however, they left labels with the power to selectively deny songs from charting, which they often did for digital singles prior to physical release presumably so they'd get a higher debut, as well as random album tracks/old stuff that might've sold well for a week and so on, so 'Cuz I Can' was never let onto the chart anyway). I remember in the depths of my mind that when 'So What' premiered, they were playing it regularly on the radio throughout the day (either every hour or every few hours), and it didn't feel like a return to me because 'Cuz I Can' had such a presence not long before. Also it would be a frontrunner for my 11  'Ave Mary A' was also an Australian radio single (the 7th and final single from 'Funhouse') and did manage to reach #10 on the airplay chart, but I wouldn't try to claim it as relevant to anyone outside of Australia. 'Are We All We Are' was even less relevant, just scraping the airplay chart for a couple weeks in the space between 'Try' and 'Just Give Me A Reason' (presumably one radio network just wanted something to play while waiting for official word on the 3rd single) and reaching no higher than #99 on iTunes out of it, but Wikipedia claims it was sent to radio in 'select European countries' too and I presume that's why it considers it a single.

AF Idol • Your Voting Stats
Mine (with the eliminated artists now more clearly differentiated): From being subposted in the Spice Girls thread to 3 votes in a row now :o :kink: Maybe 'Spice Up Your Life' or 'I Turn To You' will be able to make it 4 (I have no idea what the next theme is obviously). That's a suprisingly long streak of vote misses Katy has been accumulating (though I would've liked to fit 'Wide Awake') but surely some of my favourites of hers will get their time soon.

AF Idol 2.0: Round 8 • V O T E
1. Lady Gaga - Alejandro 2. Madonna - La Isla Bonita 3. Rihanna - Rehab 4. Britney Spears - Everytime 5. Kylie Minogue - The One ^ My clear favourites (and I love that 'Rehab' is a highlight for enough other people to have it submitted here ) 6. CNCO & Little Mix - Reggaetón Lento 7. Spice Girls - Viva Forever 8. Taylor Swift - Delicate ☁️9. Katy Perry - Wide Awake 10. P!nk - F**kin' Perfect 11. Dua Lipa - IDGAF ^ I really like these and they're very close together; sad I don't have room for 'Delicate' 12. Ariana Grande - breathin (I like it but have never felt strongly about it, which in this round is enough to leave it stuck at 2nd last) 13. Zara Larsson - Don't Let Me Be Yours (clearly out of its league here lol, RIP Zara)
-
ROUND 1: Ariana UK Top 10 singles survivor
'needy', an unremarkable album track to me - and one that feels like it only charted highest due to tracklist order, but it's still one of the most streamed non-singles on the album so it must have its popularity.

AF Idol 2.0 • Kylie and Dannii Discussion Thread
Kylie's options for this round being so good that nobody even mentioned the equally strong 'Giving You Up' :cheeseblock: 'Please Stay' would've been another great one but I think 'Your Disco Needs You' would've counted as the final single through its Australian release!
-
CHEERS VS TE AMO VS REHAB
'Rehab' is my favourite, and I'm surprised / pleased to see how popular it is! I'd have guessed 'Te Amo' (which I love too) to be the most popular.

AF Idol 2.0 • Lady Gaga Discussion Thread
FYI that's only because 'Telephone' has split versions! The censored version has 358m views and the explicit has 100m (compared to 391m for 'Alejandro'). According to the current averages on Kworb, 'Telephone' is slowly catching up too (while the explicit version is gaining almost nothing, despite seemingly not being age-restricted like I thought it might be). 'Alejandro' does have some audio uploads with decent views (understandably given the video length) but so does 'Telephone'. Spotify tells the same story - 'Telephone' has 286m plays and 'Alejandro' has 172m, and the ratio has if anything been slightly growing over the years (in 2015 'Alejandro' was at 85% of 'Telephone', and in the last 3 years it's gradually slipped from 70% to 60%). I have a graph of her bigger 2008-2013 singles' Spotify playcounts over time, in proportion to 'Bad Romance', that I've made before for my own interest (and updated now): i.e. at the start of the graph 'Applause' had 135m plays and 'Bad Romance' had 131m (putting 'Applause' at 103% of 'Bad Romance'), and now they have 240m and 407m plays respectively (putting 'Applause' at 59%). 'Poker Face' did manage to overtake 'Bad Romance' at some point in 2019 after being just behind it for so long, but it was short-lived. Anyway, 'Marry The Night' is my favourite but they're both excellent options  I think 'Marry The Night' would have a slight chance of struggling whereas 'Alejandro' would be 100% guaranteed, but I expect 'Marry The Night' would likely be fine.

AF Idol decider poll
I prefer 'Family Portrait'! I'm indecisive about which would do better. 'F**kin' Perfect' has the benefit timeline-wise for sure, but I'm not sure how loved it is? I could see it being, like, a lot of people's 9th favourite or so. I think 'Family Portrait' stands out more, especially lyrically, and is the kind of song that could make an immediate impact for first-time listeners, but it would be risky to rely on first-time listeners in a round probably full of well-known songs.
-
AF Idol 2.0 • Madonna Discussion Thread
I feel it's my job to say this: 'Bye Bye Baby' is eligible again :cheeseblock: Otherwise, I'm not certain whether I prefer 'Jump' or 'La Isla Bonita', but the latter is the clear choice to me! If it was a bigger '00s hit it might be a safer idea, but it's a relatively minor '00s hit against one of her most loved '80s classics - I don't think there'd be many people who know the former but not the latter.
-
AF IDOL 2.0 | Britney Spears DISCUSSION THREAD
I don't know much about 'Outrageous' but it feels complicated because the physical singles market had been long since killed in the US by then (apart from things like American Idol singles), so basically any single was a radio-only single, especially post-album ones (since pre-album singles might've had a digital single release among the small numbers of iTunes users at the time). For example, the same scenario applies to, say, Lil' Kim's 'Magic Stick' and Nelly's 'Air Force Ones' - both were 'singles' in the US that were inevitably radio-only, and neither were released internationally - but they were #2 and #3 hits (and #20 and #40 year-end of 2003), meaning they're undeniably hit singles despite no physical releases anywhere (and 'Magic Stick' didn't even get a video!). 'Outrageous' was only a minor hit so it's easy to write off, but that brings up the question of where you draw the line, and if it's fair to factor success into the judgement. Anyway, I absolutely love 'Break The Ice' (and 'Radar') so that's my preference  But if 'Everytime' can't fit elsewhere (and is eligible) that's the obvious choice.

AF Idol 2.0 ● Beyonce Discussion
Beyoncé pumping out so many singles in non-clear chronologies that I'm not sure what would've actually been eligible for this round :cheeseblock: Wikipedia says Kelly Rowland's 'Dirty Laundry' was the last single from its album so that's my favourite and since this is only hypothetical it doesn't matter if nobody else cares about it :cheer: 'Jumpin', Jumpin'' and 'Naughty Girl' probably could've been decent options though (depending what the competition is like), as well as seemingly 'End Of Time' ('Pretty Hurts' wouldn't have counted because at the very least '7/11' was after it).

AF IDOL 2.0 • Ariana Grande Discussion
I expect I'm alone in this, but 'Everyday' is my favourite song in that list!

AF IDOL 2.0: ROUND 7 • R E F L E C T I O N
Oh wow Girls Aloud :o I know this theme didn't really play to their strengths but they're not alone in that, and I'm surprised their song was anyone's least favourite. A shame but at least they got to reach their full potential in the first game. I did expect Robbie's time was up and I'm surprised he got as many as 20 votes! I'm glad 'Rudebox' got to be submitted and I would've liked to see 'Feel' if a suitable round had come up. Zara with her discography of 1 international album managing to beat Beyoncé and Girls Aloud :cheeseblock:

AF Idol 2.0: Round 7 • V O T E
I only kind of knew... 3 of these songs (plus technically about 5 that I'd heard once when listening to their albums), none of which I particularly care about, and ballads are frequently not my thing, so I expected my interest in this round to be limited and my goal was just to find enough tracks at least both pleasant and non-boring. As it turns out, I was quite impressed by half of these! I like the sonic diversity in the list too - a good half of the songs sound totally distinct from both each other and typical ballad templates (as opposed to if it was just, like, 15 piano ballads about love, which would... probably be a bit much in one go). 1. Madonna - Intervention 2. Kylie Minogue - Fragile -- really like this top 2, great production on both and lovely ~~vibes~~ from Kylie 3. Rihanna - Cold Case Love -- this was one of only... 2.5 songs on the album I had no familiarity with (such a stacked album). The first 4 minutes are already quite nice on their own but I really like when it explodes with the endearingly late '00s production and guitar solo 4. Little Mix - Towers 5. P!nk - Runaway 6. Spice Girls - Naked -- this is the song I was most taken aback by because it sounds so unlike any of their singles! The spoken parts + bassline felt kind of like East 17's 'Deep' or even Madonna's 'Erotica' singles to me (both comparison points I love, but also, comparing the Spice Girls to 'Erotica' is the last thing I expected), while anytime they're singing it's so distinctively them, but with said bassline giving it a totally different feel. Thanks for choosing it. 7. Britney Spears - Unusual You 8. Taylor Swift - All Too Well 9. Girls Aloud - Crocodile Tears -- a clear gap between #8 and #9 (and this means I've lost my last 100%-voted artist standing, RIP) but I did like this one too 10. Dua Lipa - Garden 11. Ariana Grande - ghostin 12. Katy Perry - Not Like The Movies 13. Zara Larsson - I Can't Fall In Love Without You 14. Robbie Williams - Singing For The Lonely 15. Lady Gaga - Is That Alright?

Ariana Grande - UK Chart Runs, Sales & Discussion
I know this was a month ago, but I just saw this yesterday and was intrigued by it so I wanted to run the Spotify numbers to see if they tell the same story. 'My Everything' benefits a lot from having 5 big singles; when it comes to less-popular album tracks, 'Dangerous Woman' and 'Sweetener' are certainly doing better, but the 4th and 5th biggest 'My Everything' tracks are considerably ahead of the equivalents from the other 2: The curse of moving onto a new album era 3 months after the previous one. That was a real mess, but I don't think it would've made the top 5 without the rule. It only reached #6 on iTunes, and the week it spent in the top 10 there was split between chart weeks thanks to the mid-week release. It also only reached #11 on Spotify, and that was several weeks later. The big culprit is the release non-strategy - it was like they planned to hold it back (kind of understandably since 'Problem' was held back so long in the UK that 'Break Free' came out elsewhere only 4 days later), but then changed their mind halfway through - maybe because they felt it had gone too far when 'Bang Bang' was already out elsewhere and on pre-order in the UK by then - and dumped it out in the middle of a random week (and with no consideration to the chart rules; they surely could've kept 'Problem' as a separate single, in which case 'Break Free' would've been eligible as the one instant grat). Either releasing it immediately or committing to the hold-back surely would've been better. 'Best Mistake' was also affected, and it reached #7 on iTunes, but fell fast enough that it wouldn't have charted high anyway. I can't remember if 'Love Me Harder' lacked radio support, but I think it suffered from being... ahead of the curve in the transition from sales to streaming. It did better on streaming (it reached #24 on UK Spotify and spent months in the top 40), but sales were dominant and provided 5 new held-back releases each week to keep it down. It was similar in Australia (minus the held-back releases) where it reached #6 on Spotify but only #19 on the official chart. I imagine it would've done better a year later.

Spotify & Apple Music Chart Discussion
My personal theory is that Spotify apply a cap (though who knows what the amount is) to their charts, but not the total playcounts within the app. I mentioned it once before (in a random thread that probably hardly anyone saw): ('White Noise - 500 hz' now has as many as 332 million plays, putting it on equal par in 'popularity' with the likes of 'Dancing In The Moonlight', 'Song 2', 'Wake Me Up When September Ends', 'My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark' and 'Electric Feel'.) I believe they only count when you play at least 30 seconds because that's the point where they have to pay royalties.
