Upcoming Exhibits Of Elvis Art By Betty Harper
http://www.elvisnews.com/images/various/expo-betty-harper.jpg Elvis artwork by Betty Harper will be showcased at The Center for Southern Folklore, located in Memphis, August 1, 2012 – October 19, 2012 and at the Birthplace of Elvis in Tupelo, Miss., November 1, 2012 – January 15, 2013. In observance of the 35th anniversary of Elvis' passing and in honor of the 40th anniversary of The Center for Southern Folklore, more than 100 pieces of Betty Harper's original Elvis artwork will be on display for fans around the world to enjoy. Since she was first entranced by the magic of Elvis in the 50's, Betty has created more than 10,000 portraits of the king, capturing every period of his life. Although Betty's artwork includes drawings of famous statesmen, entertainers and sports heroes, she has become most famous for her portraits of Elvis. With countless awards and ribbons by the time she graduated from Dreux American High School in France, Betty studied at the American Academy in Paris where she continued to develop as an artist with a style distinctly her own. “The subject matter of my art varies, but my first love has always been faces.” As she grew older, her interest in Elvis intensified. “There was something incredibly inspiring about him. He pushed right to the limit of his potential, always himself, always trying to be the best he could be.” “Every face has a story to tell,” said Betty. “Every time I draw him, I see another side, almost another person. Just when I think I've exhausted all the possibilities, have sketched every angle, every expression, I begin to draw and discover another.”

Items on display in this exhibit include Bono’s “MacPhisto” suit from U2’s Zooropa performances, Bob Dylan’s leather jacket that appears on the album cover "Real Live,” James Brown’s jumpsuit and vest worn in concert in the 1970s, along with artifacts from Elton John, Trisha Yearwood, Joan Jett, Wanda Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, The Beatles, Katy Perry and many others. Grammy award-winning artist Amy Grant, a well-known Elvis fan, gladly accepted the invitation to display her personal copy of lyrics for “Heartbreak Hotel,” handwritten for her by the songwriter, Mae Axton. “The ink is fading on the page, but the special memory of spending time with one of the great writers who gave Elvis a song to sing never will,” said Grant when asked about being included in the unique exhibit. Earlier in 2012, two additional exhibits opened at Graceland. "Elvis on Tour" celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Golden Globe award-winning documentary of the same name. The documentary takes an in-depth look at Elvis’ multi-city tour during April of that year. Artifacts from the exhibit include the producer’s Golden Globe award, jewelry and stage clothing worn by the king during the concerts, rarely-seen photos, videos and more. A new addition to the VIP Tour, "Elvis…Through His Daughter’s Eyes" opened on February 1, Lisa Marie Presley’s birthday, and highlights the relationship between Elvis and his only child. Presley was personally involved in the exhibit’s development and planning. Visitors will see numerous items including family photos and home movies that explore her experience of growing up at Graceland and the relationship with her famous father. Artifacts include Presley’s baby footprints, clothing, childhood tricycle, record player, crib, gold ID bracelet given to her by Elvis and much more. No 'Elvis Presley Airport'
No 'Elvis Presley Airport' Despite a petition, despite several requests, despite growing pressure on the Memphis Airport Authoroties, the 'Elvis Presley Airport' name switch is not likely to happen. Marty Lacker just got a very clear letter from Larry Cox the Director of the Memphis airport regarding the new campaign. The letter, published on the EER Website, states: "There are many people, Elvis Presley, Martin Luther King Jr., Danny Thomas, Fred Smith, E. W. “Ned” Cook and others, that have had major impacts on Memphis who are worthy to be considered if it is ever determined that the airport should be named for a person. The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Board of Commissioners have determined that the airport’s name should remain Memphis International Airport. Elvis Presley and the other distinguished individuals are recognized in other ways by the airport and the community." Well i think that's a mistake because they should name it Elvis Presley Airport. <_<

March 01, 1955 During the early part of March Elvis returned to Sun and recorded I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone, both as a slow blues and in the up-tempo country form in which it was written. " I guess I just can't bring it in like I used to", he said between shows. But then his spirits were lifted at the evening show by the great response from a crowd of 36,299 and according to the Los Angeles Times his performance was "masterful".
