Ailing music biz worried about glut of new albums
From Reuters Ailing music biz worried about glut of new albums Mon Aug 21, 2006 6:32 PM ET By Ed Christman LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - The avalanche of upcoming releases from stars like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Janet Jackson could make for one of the biggest fourth quarters in quite some time. But is it an embarrassment of poorly strategized riches, as some retailers claim? At first glance, it sounds like a great problem to have. Album sales are down 5.5% from last year and dropping, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and a bigger-than-usual fourth quarter could offset some of those losses. From September through the end of the year, albums expected to join the platinum parade are due from Clay Aiken, Alan Jackson, Ludacris, Beck, Evanescence, Jet, My Chemical Romance, Keith Urban and the Killers. There will also be plenty of big releases for the older demos from the likes of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Sting, the Who, Meat Loaf and Bob Seger. Most merchants, however, feel the release schedule is so strong that some titles may get lost in the shuffle; for years now, retail executives have lamented that the majors wait until the fourth quarter to release their big projects. "The release schedule is great, but where are we going to put it all?" asks Ron Lund, senior VP of product management and logistics at Handleman Co. "With all the competition from other forms of entertainment, I don't want any records to get left behind, but people only have so much money." Thuy Ngo, VP of purchasing for Super D, worries that the major labels have so much product coming out that they will only work albums for a month and move on to the next release. She urges the labels "not to just work an October new release that month, but to come back and work them in November and December." In fact, if recent sales trends are any indication, the biggest sellers during the holiday season are generally releases that come out in the first three quarters, not in the fourth. According to data presented by Nielsen SoundScan at the annual Natl. Assn. of Retail Merchants convention (NARM), only two of the top 10 best-selling albums of the SoundScan era (from May 1991 to the present) were released in the fourth quarter. That's why EMI Music Marketing president Ronn Werre says that in addition to working the company's fourth-quarter releases, the British parent company of the Capitol and Virgin labels will also chase sales on current albums from Corinne Bailey Rae, LeToya, OK Go, KT Tunstall, Korn, Ice Cube, 30 Seconds to Mars and the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Another retail concern is the competition that music sales face come the holiday season. At the recent NARM conference, Hastings Entertainment CEO John Marmaduke said the DVD and video game industries combined spent about half a billion dollars advertising their products in the fourth quarter. So while traffic is balanced all year with music getting its fair share, in the fourth quarter, store traffic switches heavily in favor of DVD and video games. That's why, he says, "it's suicide to hold (music) product until the fourth quarter." Meanwhile, there are questions about just how big the remainder of the year will be saleswise. Ngo says this year's weak sales environment may drag down the fourth-quarter releases. "So far, getting to the fourth quarter is questionable and quite depressing," she notes. "The releases are ramping up, but we have seen some disappointment, and the weekly SoundScan totals aren't responding." According to one senior distribution executive, this year's slate is heftier than usual because, for the first time since 2004, Sony BMG will be able to match Universal Music Group in bringing big sellers to market. EMI and WEA (the Warner Music-owned distributor of the Warners Bros., Elektra and Atlantic labels) also have stronger than usual schedules. The biggest wild card may ultimately be which albums actually get released in the fall and which wait until 2007. There were whispers at NARM about possible new albums from rappers Jay-Z and 50 Cent, for example. Sources close to the project say the latter's is more likely to come out in the new year. The industry is still awaiting details and street dates for a number of releases from big-name acts. "I want to be optimistic, but it's still too early to say how it will shape up because the vendors haven't committed to all the albums they say are coming," Trans World music division merchandise manager Jerry Kamiler says. Finally, there's always a sleeper album of the holiday selling season. This year, Ngo believes it will be from Yusuf Islam, who stopped recording as Cat Stevens in 1978. "Given the state of where we are with terrorism and everything that is happening around the 9-11 anniversary, people are completely scared, and it reminds me of the 1960s and 1970s, when people protested the war," she says. Ngo has heard some of the songs and adds, "(Islam's) record responds to those issues . . . and he is a real samaritan." LifeLight

Keep On at No......
The fact is not being desperate... but he's having it !!! It's not he would need to sell his soul to promote in Europe... just a couple of tv shows, some radio interviews and the will to have a proper promotion. The success of the RM cover came almost out of nowhere in Italy... then the real promotion started and that one was one of the most played song in the summer ! he had a success to build around a bigger one... it's quite sad he doesn't take the opportunity :( LifeLight

Paris an instant tanker ?
From NYPost HILTON'S CD IS INSTANT TANKER 2006 -- PARIS Hilton's career as a pop star is fizzling as quickly as one of her blink-and-you'll-miss-it relationships. In its first week out of the gate, Hilton's first CD is being widely seen as a certified flop. "Paris," which features the single "Stars Are Blind," sold a lackluster 75,000 copies in the United States - a pittance compared to Christina Aguilera's first-week sales of 320,000, according to Soundscan. And projected sales for next week are said to be a measly 30,000, which is a larger than normal second week drop. "Paris" is languishing at the bottom of Billboard's Hot 100 - so Hilton's label rushed out her second single, "Turn It Up," which isn't doing very well either. "The international outlook is not much better for her," one industry source told Page Six. "The international people are not inclined to do a big push since she can't back up the album with a tour. Obviously, she can't sing live." The source added that Hilton was advised a year ago to train her voice, work with choreographers and learn an instrument to prepare for a limited tour, but "obviously she didn't listen." Hilton's rep, Elliot Mintz, said, "To me, [the album] sounds huge. For a newcomer, this is incredibly impressive." Meanwhile, Hilton's reputation as a dirty girl put one of her former sex partners on edge after they'd been to bed together. Elijah Blue Allman, the hunky son of Cher and Gregg Allman, boasted to Howard Stern the other day that he had a fling with Hilton before she was famous - but he got nervous right afterward that he might have picked up a sexually transmitted disease from her. Allman says he was so worried, he raced downstairs and grabbed a household cleaning product to pour over his private parts and "disinfect" them. While Stern flipped over the tawdry tale, aired over his Sirius Satellite Radio raunchfest show, Hilton wasn't thrilled with the disclosure. "She's not happy about it," said a source, despite the fact Allman tried to lessen the low blow by noting she was a "sweet girl" nonetheless. From Post Chronicle Paris Hilton Celebrity CD "Paris" Headed For Certain Obscurity By Jack Ryan Aug 29, 2006 It just goes to show.. just because you have the name doesn't mean you have the talent. And Paris Hilton is learning yet another very public lesson -- celebrity isn't going to save her highly touted CD "Paris" from almost certain obscurity. "Paris" sales are being "widely seen as a certified flop" says Page Six. "Her career as a pop star is fizzling as quickly as one of her blink-and-you'll-miss-it relationships." Hilton reportedly worked hard to make this music CD (we saw her "struggle" through the grueling ordeal of picking out a sexy partner for her "Stars Are Blind" music video), but it seems the monotone nature of the single didn't thrill clubgoers. A second single "Turn It Up" was released as well, but it didn't stem the downward slide. First week sales were 75,000 copies, which are expected to drop by half that for the next week. In other Paris Hilton news, our favorite heir-head has also infuriated movie bosses recently by refusing to work with any of the leading men picked for her new film. The budding actress-and-singer has reportedly signed up to star in 'The Hottie and the Naughty', but has so far been unhappy with the prospective actors picked to appear opposite her. A film insider told Australia's New Weekly magazine: "They must have tried out over a dozen guys but still not one of them has been cast. A few have made it to a screen test with Paris but either the producers aren't happy or, more often, Paris has a problem with them. She is as picky with the men in her movies as she is in real life." Shooting on the movie is due to start later this year. Ah well.. the one talent the intrepid Ms. Hilton DOES have is garnering free publicity. And she did that in spades with this latest gig. :o :o :o LifeLight

Christina Aguilera happy with her three dogs
From People Christina Aguilera happy with her three dogs Christina Aguilera doesn't want to have children yet – because she is happy with her three dogs. The 'Ain't No Other Man' singer insists she and her husband, music executive Jordan Bratman, are planning to start a family but at present they have their hands full with their pooches. She said: 'One day we want to have the kids and start a family but I'm very focused on my career right now. Besides, we have three dogs so we already have a mini family to take care of.' Christina recently admitted she is sick of people asking her when she is going to have a baby. The 25-year-old, who tied the knot last November, said: 'Everyone's asking when I'm going to have children. I just tell them my new album, 'Back To Basics', is my child. I'm having twins! It's so exciting.' LifeLight

Well, a new single wouldn't have been huge work.... btw, I know I have to wait a lot this time... and it's quite strange cos KO was released a couple of months ago in Italy. No concerts, here... I really hope he's gonna release a live dvd ! Better than nothing ! :) Who Am I is such a song ! Far better than All Time Love... he sings it with true feelings... btw, I'm so happy he's so successful without any promotion :) :) :) I know this wait will be worth it... he's not milking his fans, he respects them. he releases something when he has something good and ready ! he's not "we have 4 good tracks, let's do 7 fillers and put an album out!". he's great because he makes us wait ;) (sort of ;) ) LifeLight
