  3. From Undercover Damon Albarn To Play First Gig With New Band by Daniel Zugna August 16 2006 Damon Albarn has announced that his new project - The Good, The Bad and The Queen - will make their debut performance in London on October 26. The ever-busy Albarn announced the new project in July, though he began working on it in 2002. It features The Clash bassist Paul Simonon, The Verve guitarist and keyboardist Simon Tong and Tony Allen, who has collaborated with the late African performer Fela Kuti. The performance will be at The Roundhouse as part of the BBC Electric Proms season. Says Albarn, "The Good The Bad and The Queen, it's... it's a story, it's not a band. I'm very very proud of this record and I think it's worth while putting it out. It's a very English record, it's the first time I've really written about home, since sort of 'Parklife'. I've always wanted to play the Roundhouse. You know, I love the idea that you have to be something that hasn't been heard before." The Electric Proms series is a full multimedia event, featuring workshops and intimate performances. It will also feature The Who's performance of their new mini rock-opera 'Wire & Glass'. The Good, The Bad and The Queen's debut record, produced by Danger Mouse, will be released in 2007. LifeLight
  4. From Billboard Beck Not Witholding On 'The Information' August 14, 2006, 7:00 PM ET Katie Hasty, N.Y. Beck's upcoming album, "The Information," will have more tracks than any of his other releases in the last dozen years. The 15-track set will be released Oct. 3 via Interscope; it will reportedly be bundled with a DVD featuring videos for every song. One clip, "We Dance Alone," is streaming on Beck's Web site, while others have already leaked online. As previously revealed, "The Information" was produced by Nigel Godrich, who helmed 1998's "Mutations" and 2002's "Sea Change." Other cuts set for inclusion are the echo-laden, psychedelic "Movie Theme," the bass-heavy, "Midnite Vultures"-esque "1000 BPM," the strummy "No Complaints" and the pounding, funky "Nausea," which will also appear on the skateboarding documentary "1st & Hope." That film is due on DVD Oct. 10 via Interscope and was directed by Brian Lotti and the Malloys. The 36-year-old songwriter is on tour in Europe through the end of the month; his lone upcoming U.S. show is Sept. 30 at the San Francisco-area edition of the Download Festival. Here is the track list for "The Information": "Elevator Music" "Think I'm In Love" "Cell Phone's Dead" "Nausea" "Soldier Jane" "Strange Apparition" "Dark Star" "Movie Theme" "We Dance Alone" "No Complaints" "1000 BPM" "Motorcade" "The Information" "New Round" "Horrible Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton" LifeLight

Christina Aguilera is on the cover of the new issue of NYC gay mag HX and girlfriend dishes the dirt. Christina Aguilera’s bringing sexy back - way back - with Back to Basics by Brandon Voss Whatever happened to Baby Jane? Turns out she’s the latest character channeled by Christina Aguilera on Back to Basics, the Grammy-winning pop diva’s ambitious double album out Aug 15 on RCA Records. With producers such as Linda Perry - with whom she collaborated on 2002’s Stripped - and DJ Premier, the artist formerly known as Xtina pays homage to the vintage blues, jazz and soul she fell in love with as a child. Although filled with love songs inspired by longtime beau and new husband Jordan Bratman - including the rousing first single “Ain’t No Other Man†- Aguilera’s third studio release proves she can still get nasty. The 26-year-old GLAAD honoree, vocal AIDS activist and ex- Mousekeeter dished us all the dirrt on her new look, her favorite gays and that bogus beef with Britney. HX: You took a lot of c**p for “Dirrty,†girl, but I hope you know the gays totally had your back on that one. Christina Aguilera: [Laughs] I know, it’s great! It’s funny sometimes, people’s conservative viewpoints on sexuality. What are we, a bunch of 70-year-olds? But at least I know the gay community supports an open mind on that. When did you become aware of your huge gay following? When I did my video for “Beautiful†and it had a visual of two gay men kissing, which I thought was important because “Beautiful†was about going against the grain and just being proud of who you are. The feedback was incredible. That’s when I knew that they got who I am. Are there a lot of gays in your life? Absolutely! A couple of back-up dancers - they give great energy on my videos - my hair and makeup team. And my best friend Steve. He tours with me on the road and we just have a blast together. He was in my wedding party - the only guy on the bridesmaid’s side! Lance Bass’ coming out. Let’s discuss. I’m shocked that it’s a big deal! I’m shocked that people are shocked. When I heard of it, I shrugged my shoulders and said, “Good for him!†Might you be a bit bisexual yourself? I’m not into labels whatsoever, but I do think the female body is beautiful, and sometimes I get more pleasure looking at a nude female body than a male’s, depending on who that is. It’s a very sensual thing, the female body, and I have an appreciation for it. Some fans are worried that you’re getting all wholesome on our asses. Completely not! While I was still recording the record, I’d open up a tabloid and see a cute picture of Jordan and I, but the headline would read “From Crass to Class†- or whatever their stupid clichés are. I was so turned off by that. As if I would ever change who I am for anyone, let alone a man in my life! So I wrote a song on my new album called “Still Dirrty,†just letting people know that I haven’t changed. Sexuality will always be a part of what I do, because it’s part of who I am as a woman, and I enjoy expressing that in a very empowering way. By no means do I ever feel objectified or put myself in an uncomfortable situation. What’s up with the new retro look? It reflects where I’m at musically. I’m a very visual artist, so it’s about creating this whole package that really takes people back in time to the era where you had those amazing screen sirens - your Jean Harlows, your Marlene Dietrichs, Marilyn, Veronica Lake. They knew how to beat their face! I love watching the old movies and getting into that whole world of old Hollywood glam. What appeals to you about the music from that era? When I pop in an old record from the ’20s, ’30s and ’40s - a Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughn or Pearl Bailey - these songs just speak to me as being so real. There’s a deep grittiness on these records - even the grainy imperfections are so beautiful. Also, there was a lot of turmoil in my house, with the abuse and whatnot, from the time I was born until about six or seven when my mom finally left my dad, so at a really young age I connected with the pain that comes across with old blues and soul music. There’s a lot of hurt in it, a lot of angst, a lot of raw emotion. Has “Xtina†been officially retired? I thought that was a cute nickname for the last record, but now the character for this record is “Baby Jane,†which is also a throwback to old Hollywood movies. Have all those piercings closed up? Yeah, just different time, different place, emotionally. They used to comfort me on the last record. It was exciting to get them, and it was kind of rewarding for me, but I’m not in that space in my life where they comfort me at all. I have other ways of comforting myself now. It’s thoughtful of you to give drag impersonators so many looks to choose from. What do they need to best capture your essence? Red lipstick, of course, and great lashes! Go buy my new album and get into it as you’re putting on your face! [Laughs] There are many different looks and still many more places to go. For the next album it will be something completely different. Another blonde bombshell drops her album a week after yours - Paris Hilton. Up for a little competition? [Laughs] It’s fine! There’s always going to be other records and other singers out there, and years from now I’m sure there’ll be the next Christina Aguilera coming up. I welcome it. Even though we do very different things, Paris and I, I think it’s great that she goes for what she wants. I’ve gotta give anyone credit for that. How does it feel when journalists pit you against Britney Spears, especially when they say that you’ve come out on top and that Britney’s a hot mess? I think it’s unfair to both of us, but it’s part of the business. As soon as we got on the scene, people saw blonde hair and navels and compared us. But I knew that eventually our bodies of work would differ. I think that she’s in a beautiful time in her life right now - she’s a mother, and I think it’s great. I’ve known her for a very, very long time, since we were on The New Mickey Mouse Club. Same with Justin [Timberlake]. It’s nice to grow up and see where all of our paths go. I don’t get involved in the negativity. I just try to focus, stick to my own game plan and keep on chugging along. Will you ever pull out the chaps again? [Laughs] When I’m 50 years old, hopefully I’ll still be able to get those suckers on. Christina Aguilera’s Back to Basics (RCA) is available Aug 15. http://64.78.33.181/features/index.cfm?id=...sub_page=weekly LifeLight
  6. From SoundGenerator Dido back for 2007 The singer recording her third album Dido Dido says she's "full steam ahead" with her new album, although don't expect to see anything until 2007. In a fan interview this week, the pop singer revealed recording sessions in LA for the follow-up to 2003's "Life For Rent" had been going well - and throwing up some unexpected results. "The process is a lot of fun this time, I'm experimenting a lot with different instruments and ways of making sounds etc," says Dido. "[i'm] really pushing myself into different directions as far as writing and recording (some of them work, some of them don't but I know that soon I'm going to want to get out of the studio and back on the road performing. "I think realistically it'll be next year now," she adds, touching on the new album. "I'm full steam ahead now, though. I've got tons of stuff I'm really proud of written and I'm in the studio every day here in LA recording. I'm actually dying to get stuff out there and play people things but because I'm doing things a little differently this time I don't want to rush it. From DigitalSpy Dido sells most albums in last 10 years Tuesday, August 15 2006, 11:30 BST - by David Cribb The top selling albums of this decade have been announced, with Dido featuring twice. Her album Life For Rent made fourth place, while No Angel sold just under 3 million copies over the past ten years, narrowly beating James Blunt into second place. The former army captain managed to make number two, despite recently being voted the fourth most annoying thing ever in a public survey. David Gray's White Ladder, and the Beatles' Greatest Hits album 1 came third and fifth respectively. here it is: Q. I've seen on your MySpace profile that there is no firm release date for your third album, but I just wanted to know how it was coming along. Go on give us something! Marcus Burscough, Fishguard Dido replies: I think realistically it'll be next year now. I'm full steam ahead now, though. I've got tons of stuff I'm really proud of written and I'm in the studio every day here in LA (there's not much else to do...) recording. I'm actually dying to get stuff out there and play people things but because I'm doing things a little differently this time I don't want to rush it. The process is a lot of fun this time, I'm experimenting a lot with different instruments and ways of making sounds etc... and really pushing myself into different directions as far as writing and recording (some of them work, some of them don't...:-) ) but I know that soon I'm going to want to get OUT of the studio and back on the road performing. I can feel the frustration of not doing shows already creeping up. LifeLight

  19. From MTV Christina Aguilera Old Soul — by Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by John Norris and Luc Edwards It didn't bother her until her wedding day, when she realized there was no one to give her away. Christina Aguilera wasn't the sort of girl who had dreamed of the perfect dress for her wedding, or floral arrangements or songs for the first dance. So it also hadn't occurred to her that not inviting her estranged father to the ceremony last November also meant she'd be walking down the aisle alone. "I was thinking, 'I'm a performer, I'll be fine, I can handle it on my own,' and I felt good about it," she recalls. "But then, all of a sudden, I was actually doing it and I just felt, 'Wow' — like, I finally got that whole 'daddy's girl' thing. It would have felt good to have that support right there next to you." She pauses, actually tearing up a little, then regains her composure. "I didn't think it was important before," she says. There seems to be a new Christina Aguilera on view these days — especially on her new double album, Back to Basics. She may have showed a lot of skin in the past, but she didn't let many people get beneath the surface. "I'm very protective of how much I let people see," she says, citing trust issues that she traces back to childhood abuse and unsavory early business experiences. So on her new album, she's finally breaking down the walls with a cycle of songs that actually deal with that childhood abuse ("Oh Mother"), lacking a father figure ("The Right Man"), and how true love can heal all wounds in the end. In fact, with tracks like "Understand," "Save Me From Myself," "Makes Me Wanna Pray," "On Our Way" and "Without You," Back to Basics is essentially a love letter to her new husband Jordan Bratman. Being with him, she says, has made it possible to "leave behind my past." "I'm excited about my future with my new husband," she continues. "Everybody needs that one person that takes you to the right place to see all the positives in your life. At 25 years old, I feel happier than I've ever been." She's still singing the blues, but because she wants to. The album's first disc, produced by DJ Premier, samples everything from songs by blues legend B.B. King and old-school New Orleans hitmaker Allen Toussaint to deeply obscure jazz tracks from the 1920s, '30s and '40s. Disc two, produced by Linda Perry (Pink, James Blunt, Christina's 2002 LP, Stripped), is different: It hardly has any samples, but a vintage sound was created with techniques like using vintage microphones muffled with cloth. These retrospective overtones — this interview even took place at Hollywood's historic Roosevelt Hotel, "the playground of luminaries including Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Marilyn Monroe," according to its Web site — are more than just a new commercial strategy. For Christina, the past is a place in which she's found refuge before. Ultimate Christina Aguilera From Christina to Xtina and beyond — the definitive collection of music videos from the pop diva's entire career. "I call it my fun music," she says of the unexpected sounds that crop up in her new songs. They date back to her childhood, when she was 7 or 8 years old and had just moved in with her grandmother to escape from her father, whom she claims was physically abusive. Grandma decided that little Christina needed some retail therapy, so together they made the rounds of Pittsburgh record stores, buying up vinyl albums by Etta James, Nina Simone, Otis Redding and Ray Charles. "I was just so drawn to that [kind of music], even at a very young age," Christina recalls. "Blues and soul and jazz music has so much pain, so much beauty of raw emotion and passion. It made me want to dance; it made me want to sing." And sing she did. Christina started performing some of the songs her grandmother had exposed her to at local block parties, then graduated to singing the national anthem at Pittsburgh Pirates games, and then to "Star Search," which she calls "the 'American Idol' of my time." She was embarrassed to be called "the little girl with the big voice," but the proverbial shoe fit. "I just opened my mouth, and when it came from the heart, it just came out." When she won a spot on the "Mickey Mouse Club" show — appearing alongside such other future stars as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Keri Russell — she felt she was home at last: "Like, finally, kids that enjoy doing the same things that I like to do." The bad old days with her father began to recede, although they never disappeared from her memory. "I think going through what I went through at a young age — the abuse that went on in my household — did affect me a lot," Christina says. "Domestic violence is a topic that is very hush-hush in society. People don't really want to talk about it or get involved — 'Oh, that's personal family business,' they say. But really, children's lives, real lives, are at stake. If someone was drowning in a pool, wouldn't you try to reach in and help them?" Christina realizes she was fortunate to be able to turn her internalized childhood trauma into music. "It's what's driven me," she says. "It's what made me stronger than I would be had I not gone through it. It gave me a purpose — to try to conquer whatever situation I'm in." However, she did lack a father figure — someone she could trust for both personal and professional guidance. When she moved to New York to start her recording career — at 15, with "certain people kinda there as a guardian or whatnot," but essentially on her own — she hoped to find one. But she kept getting entangled with people who were intent mainly on exploiting her. "There's some really gross people out there," she says. "Guys who are supposed to be your caretaker and look out for you but are hitting on you when you're a minor — guys 20 years your senior — and you're like, 'What is this?' It makes you grow up real fast." Behind The Scenes At Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" Video Set Christina Aguilera Performs In London, 07.20.2006 Christina Aguilera, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, More Arrive At The 2006 MTV Movie Awards Christina Aguilera: "Dirrty" Girl To Married Woman Maybe that's one reason why '50s R&B singer Etta James, one of Christina's musical inspirations and now a friend, calls her an "old soul." Those hard times will always inform the person she is. On a new song called "Understand," Christina sings, "I used to think that happiness/ Could only be something that happened to somebody else." Jordan Bratman changed all that. Had Bratman not entered Christina's life five years ago, "the lyrical content of the album would have been very different," she says. "Before I met Jordan, I felt that I was the only person who was really going to be there for me, besides maybe my immediate family. So I had to be strong, and I had all these walls up because I've been hurt so many times. And Jordan just came and swept that aside. He was seriously a breath of fresh air. He was so genuine, so sincere, so real." At its bawdy best, Basics celebrates that discovery — "Candyman" and "Nasty Naughty Boy" are bright, brassy tributes to love and lust. It's happy music, and Christina's clearly having fun with it — mimicking the 1940s-era swing standard "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and occasional burlesque club tunes before bringing in the strings for earnest expressions of her love. And with a real love in her life, Christina was, for the first time, confronted with the difficulty of writing real love songs. Not exactly a fan of the form, she looked for ways to make her love songs distinct. So on "Save Me From Myself," for instance, she recorded her voice in a way she'd never done before: "No belting, no vocal gymnastics, nothing crazy — I just wanted to make it super-simple and really raw. There's no reverb — and I'm a reverb queen — and no effects. Everything's stripped clean, super dry, very softly sung, up-close on the mic." Add an acoustic guitar and a tasteful string quartet, and "that's it," she says. "That's the entire song." Another new track, "The Right Man," is more orchestral and even includes a choir. Written from the perspective of herself about to walk down the aisle, it's a showstopper — half lament about the father who isn't there, half celebration of the man who is. "I'm all made up today/ A veil upon my face But no father stands beside me/ To give this bride away ... Here I leave behind my past/ By taking a chance I finally found the right man" ... "I'm looking ahead at this man that I'm about to marry," Christina says of the song, "and realizing that by taking that step, I'm kind of breaking the cycle. My future daughter is not going to go through what I did. I'm mending my past by marrying this amazing man." Now, she finally has the freedom to leave the past behind her. "Twenty-five years from now," she says, "there'll be a completely different me. But for now, I'm where I need to be. I'm definitely in a place where I feel good, I feel at peace. No drama — don't want any, don't need any. I can just look forward to the future and make it as bright as I can. I'm finding myself ... "... and I'm not done." LifeLight
  20. From EntertainmentWise Christina Aguilera Turns Down Reality TV Shows Clever girl... Email Article Print Article By: Lowri Williams on 8/11/2006 Pop star Christina Aguilera is constantly turning down requests to appear in her very own reality TV show with her new husband Jordan Bratman. Aguilera is currently gearing up for the release of her new album ‘Back to Basic’ and often finds that TV executives are puzzled over here rejection of their lucrative offers and follow in the footsteps of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Speaking to MTV Aguilera said: "We've been approached, actually, and it has been a question for some people, but my marriage and my relationship with my husband is something that I really want to protect". She added that she felt sorry for those stars who became a victim of the media: "My heart goes out to that whole situation. It's a whole different ballgame, I feel, when you do open yourself up to that whole thing, and it must be difficult. "You're open to all the judgment in the world. At least now I can say, `Well, you don't know my situation and it's very private and special and sacred to me.'" Compared to Britney, Christina seems like a seriously clued up lady… LifeLight

http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/music/r...icle1218243.ece Album: Christina Aguilera Back to Basics, RCA *** By Andy Gill Published: 11 August 2006 Christina Aguilera certainly has an unusual idea of getting "back to basics", which here involves not just the album you expect, full of shrill diva disco-pop, but an additional album on which she unveils her "new direction", full of simulated blues and big-band swing. Presumably, then, the album title is referring not to a stripped-down simplicity of approach, but to the roots, or "basics", of the R&B in which she plies her trade. Even the standard album features several tributes to her forerunners in the jazz and soul genres, notably "Back In The Day", built on a Jimmy Castor Bunch riff, before she even gets to the full-on jaaazz album. For the most part, though, it's business as usual, with the urgent discofied hysteria and vocal showboating of tracks like the single "Ain't No Other Man" and "Without You" interspersed with the overwrought sentimentality of the Madonna-esque "Oh Mother" and the concluding "Thank You", on which Aguilera's grateful vocal is punctuated with fans' answerphone tributes thanking Christina for her "guidance", a notion that truly beggars belief. In places her respect for her R&B ancestors pays welcome dividends, notably on the rolling horn-sample grooves of "Here To Stay" and "Slow Down Baby" and the gospelly "Makes Me Wanna Pray", built on a lift from Traffic's "Glad". But the shortcomings of the diva working method are plain on "On Our Way", whose chorus vocal jumps haphazardly about without establishing a coherent emotional tone. The touchstones for the "bold, set vision" of the second disc, she claims, are such as Billie Holiday, Otis Redding, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. Produced by Linda Perry, this set effectively finds Aguilera stealing the clothes off retro-swing-rapper Nellie McKay's back, calling out "come here big boy" over razzy big-band stripper music on "Nasty Naughty Boy", as if she were Madonna in "Hanky Panky" mode. The samples on this disc are more likely to be from an oompah or Marines brass band than funk or soul acts, though the album lurches towards an overbearingly maudlin, string-drenched conclusion with a clutch of impassioned big production numbers. And it's questionable whether the bogus Bessie Smith-style blues "I Got Trouble" is best served by the fake vinyl scratches and "antique" process through which her voice is filtered. But it's not quite the disrespectful farrago one might expect - and although it will rate few plays at the expense of the more mainstream material, she should, I suppose, be applauded for acknowledging her musical forebears. But it's not quite the disrespectful farrago one might expect - and although it will rate few plays at the expense of the more mainstream material, she should, I suppose, be applauded for acknowledging her musical forebears. http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,2...5006024,00.html CAMERON ADAMS talks with Nelly Furtado about her Coldplay mate Chris Martin. Your last album, Folklore, kind of disappeared after your debut Whoa Nelly was a massive hit. What do you learn from that? I learnt you can't take anything for granted. In the beginning I had all these opportunities, like winning a Grammy, opening for U2, playing Saturday Night Live, doing photo shoots for Vanity Fair . . . I just thought everybody had that kind of luck first time out. Now I see it was beginner's luck. With Folklore people weren't ready, it's a mixture of luck and fate and trends. It was such an intimate and personal album it was a stepping stone for me. I wanted to show people I wasn't just this cartoon character from the I'm Like a Bird video. I guess I'm a little bit guilty of being that selfish artist who uses their albums to work through things. It's a cult favourite, Folklore. It's the fan favourite. The people who like that album really, really like it. Whoa Nelly was like the big loud girl at the party who was in everyone's face. Folklore is the dark serious girl on the couch who wants to have a serious discussion with you in the corner. Loose is the whole party. Loose is a change in direction. It sounds weird, but it's almost like I was born again as a female with the birth of my daughter (Nevis). I feel like I'm claiming my femininity more on this album. You've got a more sexy image now. I've definitely changed that way. Before my closet was 90 per cent sneakers and 10 per cent fancy shoes, now it's all high heels and one pair of gym runners. When I had a baby my body changed . . . as an artist you have to challenge your fans, show them you're evolving. People are attracted to change, to vulnerability. You did a duet with Chris Martin on Loose's All Good Things, then his voice was removed. What happened there? That version is on the internet somewhere. It wasn't a traditional duet. Chris really wanted to come in and meet (producer) Tim(baland). Tim didn't want to make it a duet so he sampled his voice and it weaved in and out. It was so beautiful, it was actually quite groundbreaking the way he infused his vocal in it. It's still really good without the vocal, but at the last minute his label said "No, we can't do that" because his vocal was a little more raw than it sounds on a Coldplay record. It was unfortunate, maybe we can put it on a B-side album. I want to do a B-side album next year, there was a lot of stuff left over from Loose. So it was a mutual love-in between Chris and Timbaland? Oh yeah. Timbaland was jamming (Coldplay's) X&Y like mad. All Timbaland would talk about was Coldplay. He was like "That guy's the truth". He would play the CD and sing all the lyrics. Coincidentally I bumped into Chris backstage at the MTV Awards in Miami. We used to be friends when we were doing our first albums in England. He said "You're working with Timbaland, that's amazing, can I come by? I'd love to see how he works." I said "Tim would love to meet you, you don't understand . . ." When you say you used to be friends with Chris, is it true you were once 'special friends'? No! Everyone thinks that's true, but no, we were just friends. So how did Chris and Tim's meeting go? Chris was kind of humble and shy and nervous. Timbaland was the same. They were like schoolkids. I had to be the one to say "Tim, turn your keyboard on. Chris here's your guitar, sit down, get on with it." I don't think they would have made music otherwise. Once we got going it was like Chris had this inner James Brown he had to exorcise. Hang on: Chris Martin funky? Hey, at one point Chris was doing his own rendition of Jay-Z's Dirt Off Your Shoulders. It was brilliant! When HiT spoke to him Chris was coy about the rumours he's doing something solo with Timbaland. I think he might do a solo project in the future. It'd be great. Actually Timbaland and I are talking about doing a Gorillaz/Gnarls Barkley-style band collaborative effort. We found it quite freeing in the studio, it was really liberating to not have the pressure of being a solo artist. In the music business you get so busy promoting, but when you let yourself make music magical things happen. You said Timbaland is like 'ET on the boards'. Are you saying he's an extra-terrestrial? It seems like he beams in a sound from outer space. It's really interesting to watch. He really becomes the rhythm when he makes beats. You recorded a song, Crowd Control, with Justin Timberlake that hasn't ended up on either of your albums. He might put it out as a B-side or something. He's very funny and really talented. I didn't really understand how talented he is until I worked with him. He's full of ideas and concepts. And he's in your Maneater video. We invited him to shake his booty in the video. He was nervous, he was like "I'm the odd person out." So let's talk more about this band you and Timbaland are thinking about. How serious is it? We're even fooling around with band names, like the Awake. We were inspired by Eurythmics and Blondie. It'll be like the UNKLE project. When I was in the studio with Chris and Tim I felt I was watching something great happening. To tap into that intense energy is the reason I make music. You can't pay for those moments. So you wouldn't front the band? I'd be one of the singers, plus maybe Justin, Chris, Missy (Elliott) . . . it'd be neat if it was a real collective. Between your contacts and Timbaland's contacts . . . I think it'd be amazing. The idea is to shut off our Blackberrys and work for two weeks straight and call the album In Two Weeks. We'll see. 24. From NME The Thrills make 'best work to date' As they complete third album The Thrills have completed their third album which they have proclaimed is their 'best work to date'. The as yet untitled album will be the follow up to 2004's 'Let's Bottle Bohemia' and was recorded in Vancouver. It has been produced by Tony Hoffer. Posting on their myspace site on the final day of recording (August 5), singer Conor Deasy wrote: "It's the last night in the studio. We've been working from noon 'till 1 in the morning for a month and half with one day off a week. "I believe this record will be our best work to date. The songs have really risen to the occasion. There's only been one casualty. Maybe she'll turn up on another record. We recorded our first instrumental. Could be a good opener. We're going to go home for a week or so. Get some sleep and perspective, then regroup and mix it." A release date for the album has not been announced. MySpace entry: UPDATE : VANCOUVER NEWS - ALBUM RECORDING COMPLETE It's the last night in the studio. We've been working from noon 'till 1 in the morning for a month and half with one day off a week. I believe this record will be our best work to date. The songs have really risen to the occasion. There's only been one casualty. Maybe she'll turn up on another record. We recorded our first instrumental. Could be a good opener. We're going to go home for a week or so. Get some sleep and perspective, then regroup and mix it. There were visitors. Nick, our A&R guy, came over to inspect proceedings. However, he spent the lion's share of his time down by English Bay in The Soho Arms downing pints of bitter, wearing the new Liverpool strip. Guinness travels better. Tony's (The Producer) wife also visited. She got a part in Days Of Our Lives. We all tuned in. She was great in it. The setting was a bar on the wrong side of town. There was a brawl, a mysterious leather hand and the guy with a past suffering from amnesia with a patch over his eye. All in one scene. Max Dodson, our favorite photographer who directed our first video for One Horse Town, came over and took some shots of us playing in the studio. The proposed shoot on the roof of the studio had to be curtailed after Padraic and Ben simultaneously fouled Max in a truly horrific tackle during a friendly football game. Max couldn't walk let alone climb up to the roof. There was a distinct lack of sportsmanship about the incident given the friendly nature of the game and taking into account the sanctimonious lecturing these two individuals had given everyone about having a clean game beforehand. Ben also trampled over Tony's plane which just happened to be landing in the middle of the pitch mid game. Ben's reputation as hard hitter, despite his tender lady's man tendencies, still stands since The Florida Episode last year when he dislodged a bone in Padraic's hand, whose guitar playing style has never quite been the same since. Our model airplane fetish has escalated. The planes have once again been upgraded. We only realized at a later date that Padraic's model bore a close resemblance to a World War Two Nazi bomber. Bryan Adams, the owner of the studio, came down down to say hi. We boasted that we would be flying from and landing on the ten story car park across the street the next night. However, since it's our last night and we are running around like headless chickens trying to tie up loose ends, all planes have been grounded for the foreseeable future. In the last blog I mentioned how this studio is rumored to be haunted. Since we relocated to Studio One last week, we have had some first hand supernatural experiences. For example, there is a door in the basement that has a mind of its own. On various occasions members of the band have been locked in the basement despite the fact that the door is unlocked and the lock is visibly unhinged. Despite intense pushing from the outside and pulling from the inside, the door remains inexplicably shut tight as if by some magnetic force. One time the door suddenly swung open and hit an already rattled Padraic. We discovered a music store that rents instruments for a dollar and fifty cents a day. Canadian dollars. This has encouraged some flights of fancy. Daniel is currently doing a personal crash course on the violin and preparing to record a part. If he can't cut it, there's a busker outside the hotel who will get the gig. The new Sleepy Jackson album sounds beautiful. I'm very jealous. Tony and Todd want to see Snakes On A Plane even though they acknowledge there is no way it could live up to such a title. Last week the spectacular Vancouver Fireworks Festival was being held. Ben got a new computer. It makes Padraic's old computer look like some Fisher Price $h!t. Ben is reading The Art Of Happiness. Padraic is struggling with An Introduction To Buddhism. I am flicking through a biography of F Scott Fitzgerald. Kevin is recognizing himself in The Beautiful And Damned. Daniel is house hunting online. We've had a great time in Vancouver but our work is done and now it's time to go home. Conor. http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...20-9d33722378a4 LifeLight
