BUT.... they are NOT singles yet.... this is supposed to be a SINGLES chart. They are album tracks... The OCC needs to identify: what is a SINGLE...

Hardly a knee jerk statement; I think most people are genuinely horrified that our much beloved Singles chart has been corrupted by album tracks that are NOT singles. It's not about column inches, it's about preserving the integrity of the singles chart OR scrapping it for good and making it just a tracks chart, which few of us want. Either way, Sheeran's album tracks that WILL dominate the singles chart this week, but shouldn't be counted as any kind of new chart record, because artists like Madonna, Elvis, Jackson et al would have all done it before (thank-god they didn't) - my point is there isn't a level playing field anymore - so you can't compare this achievement to say The Beatles domination in the '60's or Madonna's in 1985 - as those singles had to be Physically released to dominate. They were proper singles, not album tracks. IMO the OCC should be ashamed for they way they've handled this fiasco and for destroying something once much-loved - now there will just be apathy for the chart as this will happen again and again now. It will just become dominated by the few.

I just emailed them, for what it's worth....

And anyone who says different is not true fan of the former British Singles Chart - whomever made this call at the OCC should be fired; they've failed to understand the ramifications of this. There has to have been a better route.
  5. HALLELUJAH!!!! Very well put!!!!

UM, it's not the SINGLES chart anymore, just a download of tracks chart...... and sadly most of those this week will be album tracks. RIP the SINGLES chart. Luckily this has happened only recently, I can imagine in 1994/5/6/7 that Oasis would have had the whole top 40!

The OCC calls it the Official Singles Chart Top 100 it's not a singles chart anymore; it's a most streamed/downloaded/purchased TRACKS chart - IF it's a singles chart, it should be just that, or else let's change the name - which is not what most of us want. I certainly don't want to see album tracks charting, clogging up the charts - why have an albums chart at all anymore????

Lana and indeed many other artists are missing out on Top 40 positions due to the insane OCC decision to allow album tracks to chart, thus clogging up the charts, with tracks that haven't been released as singles - and it's about to get a whole lot worse.

Gaga's Fame - UK sales approx 2,940,000 Gaga's Joanne - UK sales approx 100,000 That's quite a diminishing return! A combination of sales interest in Gaga plummeting (for multiple reasons) and the charts of 2017! Still, what should count is quality not sales, and Joanne is a fairly decent album.

It's pretty simple as I already mentioned: non singles (album tracks) should be ineligible unless they are official singles; the record company has to give a release date and the single cannot chart before then. If this doesn't happen, the singles chart will be over for good.

As I said in a previous post; to allow all album tracks to chart makes a joke of the singles chart - they should be ineligible unless they are singles; which begs the question, what is a single these days and what is an album? Surely the answer is that the record company have to officially designate a track as a single, meaning albums tracks only count towards album sales? Just like in the old days. The OCC could limit the amount of singles an artist could release over a month to say 3 (with 2 months scheduled release) , meaning album tracks couldn't be switched easily.
  12. L4L was a terrible choice for lead single, and so whatever she did at the BRITS, it was never going to have a massive impact on sales - the song is shite - however at least the fall got her some attention... SHOULDA been Ghosttown.
  13. This generation's Phil Collins.... beige!

God the UK charts have become sooooo boring. So little excitement these days; streaming has killed the charts and my interest in them (a chart-o-phile since 1987). There's so little movement; Sheeran's domination of the Top 2 and now Top 5 is beyond beige. I miss the days of a dynamic chart - perhaps being in my 30's means it's time for me to bow out of this forum; RIP UK music charts.
  15. Definitely a relative flop in the UK (in comparison to her past efforts), but doing well in the USA thanks to a decent Superbowl appearance.
