For the most part, this is not a novelty chart where we create fake #1 hits because we were sick of the old ones. Of course, "Man I Need" gained an extra week at #1 because of the Christmas shenanigans, but otherwise, we're in for the long haul. We see no halt in momentum, we see no contenders on the horizon, we embrace our Gold FM future. Showing the power of social media and TikTok in the 2020s, an event that I can't imagine a significant portion of young Australians actually watched (look I watched it, but I don't think I count) has resulted in a massive boon for Bad Bunny, scoring both his first solo top 50 entries, and his highest ever entry as "DtMF" leads the pack at #4. It previously came close to entering the top 50 a year ago. I'm going to also point out that "Titi Me Pregunto" was not included on the On Replay chart last week, so I'm not sure whether to expect it on the chart next week even though it passes all the requirements. At the same time, "Opalite" rushes back into the top 10 thanks to the video release. As far as I can tell, it's had no physical sales added to it, so we'll see if Australia is also subject to chicanery in the coming weeks, but they'd have to sell a ludicrous number of them over here to pull off the great steal. This is my way of saying that you should be incredibly suspicious if it becomes a #1 single in the future, returning to #2 probably wouldn't require suspension of disbelief. sombr debuts in the top 20 and is making fast moves to ruin the peak of the also still trying to climb "12 to 12". The JENNIE remix of "Dracula" also aids that to a slightly improved new peak. If it matters to you, it's still not outpeaking "The Less I Know The Better". I've decided to add a new contextualising feature for the Bubbling Under chart, an asterisk to indicate songs that haven't actually reached the top 50 before. There's probably a better way to present it but that's just what I came up with on the moment, as something that transfers easily from my Notepad file to here. Hopefully I just haven't forgotten which songs made the top 50 and which ones didn't. It's also an alarmingly big listing this week, with only 6 'new' singles in the top 50 this week. "Raindance" is one of those too which will be removed next week I believe. Perhaps Luke Combs or Bella Kay can swing the dial the other way though. On the album chart, Karnivool score their second #1 album to date. I've been writing these entries here since around the start of 2015, which means there's been no need for me to ever mention Karnivool. Their last album was released in 2013, and it also scored them their first #1 (previously they debuted at #2 releasing on the same week as The Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D."). Karnivool are a progressive metal band from Perth who are often compared to Tool, and that was before they both decided to take 13 years to release a new album. They have added notoriety because their lead singer Ian Kenny also fronts the Perth alt rock band Birds of Tokyo who achieved significant mainstream success in the 2010s including multi-platinum singles (one of which got to #3 on the charts) and also have two #1 singles. I've been pretty obsessed with both bands since I was in high school (and I didn't even live in Western Australia). When I had to make an IT project developing an info-portal about dinosaurs, I took it upon myself to include a hidden easter egg game where your mouse cursor gets chased by a dinosaur while the opening riff to Karnivool's cover of Gotye's "The Only Way" plays in the background. Probably one of the greatest things I ever did. I've since seen both bands live and I heartily recommend Karnivool to anyone who wants to hear incredibly delicately composed rock music that can be both intense and beautiful. The new album's got my tick of approval for sure. Also going on this week, Joji's new album enters at #3, just like his last one did, though the one before that went to #1. Once again he's performing better in Australia than elsewhere, so ARIA labelling him as an Australian artist must have some sort of sway in the public consciousness. Bad Bunny also climbs to a new peak of #4 on the album chart, just not from quite as steep a starting point. J. Cole enters at #7 which might feel fittingly like a fall-off, but in truth despite feeling like he's been unstoppably popular for ages, he's only ever had one #1 album in Australia, constantly at odds with his tendency to release at inopportune times for this market. ROLE MODEL climbs into the top 20 this week, which coincides with his Laneway appearance, and it looks like it'll be accompanied by his first top 50 single next week. Also benefitting from Laneway is Geese, who climb into the top 20 for the first time. PinkPantheress was also another draw card here, while Chappell Roan was headlining but doesn't have a new enough album to show for it. Djo was actually at Laneway last year, and just benefits from a physical release of his deluxe edition. I mentioned Tool earlier and funnily enough, we have the return of the Maynard side-project Puscifer, scoring their first top 50 entry since 2007, back when the only song of theirs I know was on the radio, can I get a hell yeah? I also want to highlight the new entry for Melbourne band Blusher, because it strangely bears the name of their prior EP, on the same week they released a similarly named album actually called "rager". I've got no idea.

The international social media machine rears its head again as we're proven to care considerably more about the GRAMMYs than the ARIA Awards or really anything happening in our own country even though there's no shot as many people actually saw them. It's given Olivia Dean another monster jolt and we'll have to wait for not next week but the week after that to see if she's ready to settle up top. For now she's pretty unbothered at the top to the extent that her closest competition is her own song, "So Easy" now hitting #2 for the first time. 'Where the hell is RAYE's #2 peak?', we ask for another week. Otherwise it's a relatively quiet week with just a new entry for Noah Kahan. Once again he has an extremely Spotify heavy audience and I'm not sure if the rest of the market will respond. If Olivia Dean hadn't won a GRAMMY, it would have been possible that "Rein Me In" would have a stat line of 20 20 20 20 and I am very disappointed to have missed this. I call this the Mumford & Sons record because "Little Lion Man" did this at #16. #16 is where "Rein Me In" has climbed, so they've tried to emulate Mumford & Sons but done it incorrectly, for shame. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for [I scroll back up a bit] an 8th week now. We're gonna have to see how many first week buyers from 2013 come back for a new album in 2026 to see if she can be toppled next week. Bad Bunny is probably also close to outpacing her now but I suspect he's too far behind to make the ground. Don Toliver pulls up at #4, his first time in the top 10 after three top 20 albums. I'd say it's the effect of having a sort of viral hit of late but it feels wrong to pretend that "No Pole" is as popular (or good) as "No Idea" or "After Party". Lily Allen's physical release (and tour announcement) sends her back to #6 which is exactly where she peaked last year. The new Stranger Things soundtrack arrives at #11, just a little behind the #8 peak the last one managed. As is often the case, EsDeeKid's arbitrary chart allowance means that he scores a rare 2nd week new peak. Next we have a punk band from Brisbane who did get all of their sales counted, as Radium Dolls score their first ever chart entry. I'll also admit to never having knowingly listened to Sydney's Velvet Trip but they're also charting for the first time.

Friday Chart Predictions
If you want to stretch the rules a bit, "AM" is a top 10 End Of Year album in 2013, exactly 10 years later and "I Wanna Be Yours" makes the End Of Year list for the first time (album makes the top 10 for the second time that year too).

Friday Chart Predictions
Evidently niche but I was hoping to see Karnivool a bit higher in the first mid-week, guess they won't be adding another country to their charting spreadsheet. Fantastic album though after a long wait. Their last album came out a week before I joined this forum 😅

More than ever, I feel like a big substantial effect will come from people who just search him up and it's his top song currently (especially if many aren't too fussed to pin down non-English song titles to whatever snippet they heard.

Should The UK Singles & Album Charts Have a Recurrent Rule where Older songs and Albums are disqualified from the charts
I feel like the denigrating 'effect' of having older entries on the chart feels exaggerated because it's an expression that can only be relayed through chart obsessives who are likely to share the feeling. The kinds of people who dig into every new entry immediately, wear it out and then become baffled that the rest of the country aren't already sick of these songs. The same way radio stations tend to stick with establish hits for seemingly unreasonable times, because in the interest of retaining listeners, they provide familiarity. I don't think a quick fix ever really suffices though because it never tackles the root cause of the situation, and you just create a chart where the gaps are bigger and the week by week tussles become less thrilling, because there are just less songs that are eligible. I used to run simulations of charts with specifically planned out chart run formulae (so you could have the parabola, the high debut that declines, the slow burner etc). One of my big takeaways from it is that without an influx of active hits, you get a drudging corpse of activity. Redacting the chart might create new hits, but they're ones that can't possibly compete with the biggies because the chart doesn't have that kind of influence. Whenever I look at the lower end of the UK Chart, I always see a bunch of songs that are only charting because of ACR displacement, and can't fall out because there's nothing to replace them, but they're never cracking the top 40 because they're increasingly far away from the mark. It's a bit like when Glee used to infiltrate the charts, or there was an influx of album tracks. They create statistical activity, but they're not part of the main top 40 conversation (usually) and so that just chugs along with its pre-ordained business.

Friday Chart Predictions
I'll concede it's probably not set to be his biggest hit or anything, but I think it is worth considering that there are times when the public really just aren't rushing towards new music, for whatever reason. I like comparing fellow new singles (ie less than 3-4 months old) because they don't have the same degree of ironed-on listeners and tend to start from scratch. Kinda like how Djo's "End of Beginning" is doing roughly as well now as it did 2 years ago. It's easier to do that because it has a baseline of around 1.5 million streams every day that it didn't last time around. In the same way Harry Styles has a lot of monthly listeners by happenstance, it's an example of the way older songs (whether of the "Boys Don't Cry" or the "Lush Life" variety) tend to outperform brand new hits with less promotional effort, both in terms of reaching surprisingly high peaks and also not collapsing quite as fast as the moment seems to end. All things considered, I think it's doing fine thus far and the big week 2 decline can just as easily be explained by the natural cooling on early repeat listens, as it is an irregularly high curiosity listen->bounce rate. We already know there's a second wind built into the album release day incoming so we'll see if that rejuvenates it. I'll leave it at that though because my social battery's pretty spent for the day 😌

Friday Chart Predictions
I absolutely understand how it works. My point is that the initial (new release window) audience reach for anyone is just too small to call it decisive. Long standing hits are the ones made by people who haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe they're not going to because the first burst of listeners aren't giving it the best vibe, but I think it's erroneous to suggest that a song underperforms because of listeners and not non-listeners, especially when it reflects a general audience trend against all new music. The only song released within the last few months even competing with it is Noah Kahan's, and Harry's already overtaken that one on DSPs. I'll admit I have an aversion to the observation of 'it flopped because bad', a tenet only used when it's convenient to our own narrative, but it's way too soon to call it anyway.
-
Friday Chart Predictions
I agree but inflated or not, it indicates a lot of potential listeners that haven't even clicked on the new song, which at the very least suggests it's not quite an all-encompassing 'event' single that everyone's moved on from.
-
Friday Chart Predictions
Counterpoint: Harry has 63 million monthly listeners on Spotify (up from 52 million just before the song dropped) and the song only has 55 million streams. I'd estimate somewhere around 10-20 million listeners total (it's a 5 plays per listener ratio on last fm), so the problem is that even among people who listen to Harry Styles, most of them have not heard it.

Back in 2012, One Direction released their single "Live While We're Young", the lead single to their second album following the massive success of the first one. It did absolutely bonkers. I forget the exact figures, but at a time when the #1 single would tend to move about 20-30,000 units in a week, One Direction managed somewhere north of 60,000. The highest weekly digital sales figure ever, and an amount that's only been surpassed by a small handful of Australian Idol singles and "Candle In The Wind 1997". "Live While We're Young" did not hit #1. It debuted at #2 because its release coincided with an even bigger monster on the charts, PSY's "Gangnam Style", which on its biggest ever week, moved around 70,000 units. A frighteningly unlucky result for One Direction though they would get their #1 hit a few years later. Anyhow, I suspect Harry Styles was gearing up for a #1 debut and I think he probably could have done it under normal circumstances, but didn't account for triple j's Hottest 100 falling on the same week of his release. Having a large swathe of the country's music fans glued to another piece of news immediately after the release can't be good for promotion, and to make matters worse, the winning song that got the biggest boost from the whole thing was Olivia Dean's "Man I Need". It's been 13 years and Harry has learnt nothing. At least he's already got some #1 hits though. The best he can do is play grinch to some other contenders, as RAYE & Olivia Dean's other single would have otherwise scored new peaks this week. As for the rest, as much as I would love to do a full deep dive on the fascinating history behind Playlunch's novelty hit "Keith" which landed at #4 in the Hottest 100, it hasn't quite cracked the top 50. Instead our big arrival comes from the #2 finisher, Keli Holiday's "Dancing2". If you are unsure of who this is, it's a solo singing persona of Adam from Peking Duk. If you're unsure of who they are, they're an electro-pop duo who scored numerous hits in the mid to late 2010s. Their biggest hit "High" actually landed at #2 in triple j's Hottest 100 for 2014, so it's his second time in the runner up position. "Dancing2" could best be described as an electro pop ballad dedicated to Adam's girlfriend Abbie Chatfield. She's a fairly famous influencer who came to the nation's attention years back as a contestant on The Bachelor, who got given a villain edit that made her look pretty dumb from the outset, and I suspect a lot of people are still holding onto this manipulation. Over the past 4-5 months, I have witnessed the mother of all algorithmic boosted smear campaigns as a bunch of people who dislike one or two of these people have been screaming to the rooftops about how it's the worst song ever made and how the industry is trying so hard to make it a thing. Facebook's algorithm keeps feeding any Keli Holiday related posts to these people and they keep signal boosting it beyond belief, all the while convinced in their echo chamber that they're putting it in its place. Since Peking Duk actually performed at the AFLW Grand Final late last year, it even gets thrown in as an excuse for anyone who hates women's sports to be gratified by the association. It's the new Tones And I where the outrage is so hyperbolic it makes anyone who thinks their additional grenades to associate themselves with the crowd look idiotic for thinking they are doing themselves or the explosions any favours. I can't help but think these people have made the song into a bigger hit, and I've never learnt what new music these people think we should be listening to instead. Angry online mobs are always so disorganised. Anyway, the song is now a top 30 hit, so congrats to all of them, tell me more about how people in their early 20s are so ignorant because they aren't intimately familiar with an LCD Soundsystem song that came out when they were wearing diapers and wasn't a hit (because that's not what they do). Also the less interesting Tame Impala song that finished at #3 got a new peak this week. Addison Rae finished at #20 but her rebound feels so isolated that I'm not sure it's fully attributed to this. In other news, "Beautiful Things" has been pushed to pasture and the Bubbling Under chart is very big this week. It's a monumental week on the album chart as Megadeth claim their first ever #1 album. I haven't had the opportunity to check, but with it being over 40 years since their debut came out, we might be looking at the longest ever wait to score a #1 album in Australia. I can't really claim the same spiel about Louis Tomlinson as he's only at #3, but he did score a #2 album when he released within a month of Taylor Swift back in 2022 which is always a silly prospect. Poppy makes a big splash this week with her first ever top 50 album coming in at #7, while local streaming juggernauts The Paper Kites reverse their recent fortune and debut at #13, their second highest ever position. I won't choose to take credit for this but I mentioned last week that EsDeeKid's album was missing from the chart, it isn't anymore! The Kiwi charts do not seem to have gotten the memo though. Spacey Jane & Ocean Alley are two more big performers in the Hottest 100 who see noticeable rebounds on the chart.

We arrive at the big question for the week, which is whether or not she can make it to 11 next week. I'll talk more on it next week but suffice to say, Harry Styles may have chosen a bad week to release his new single here. He had a highly impressive first day, the 8th highest Spotify count for any non-Christmas or Taylor Swift songs. He's receded considerably behind the pack in the days since, not helped by Australians being distracted by triple j's Hottest 100, Australia Day and the awful weather. As expected, Olivia Dean did come in at #1 for the Hottest 100 and that's gonna probably lock her for #1 this week, while possibly adding some curiosities to the chart next week. Given there are no Australian songs in the top 50, we could probably use the help. RAYE takes "WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!" to #3 this week, which means she's hit this peak position 3 times now, with "Escapism." & "Prada" previously. "Lush Life" continues to not be on the chart so Bruno Mars scores a probably fake top 10 hit. "Beautiful Things" hits 105 weeks on the chart so I believe it will be ousted next week. I forgot to mention Sienna Spiro debuting last week, but now she's into the top 20. Also making that move though from a little further back is PinkPantheress with the remix of "Stateside". I must admit as a massive fan of the original version, I don't like this one anywhere near as much, and it couldn't even pull the song into the Hottest 100 so I have no use for this. We get to witness the funny experience of delayed gratification on the upper UTC parts of the world, because while Zach Bryan's "Plastic Cigarettes" peaked on week 1 in most places, here it actually had a slightly improved second week and gets to climb into the top 50. Always keep these stunted debuts in mind when you find yourself wondering why Australia's charts don't have as many new entries as others do. I don't know what it's like around the rest of the world but the boomers seem to love YUNGBLUD. The token 'I don't listen to new music very often, but this guy gets it' demographic that can be very lucrative for word of mouth. He's managed to belatedly hit #1 with his latest album, which gives him two career #1's to date, his self-titled album managing to debut there back in 2022. Madison Beer fares a little better than her boyfriend did this month and scores her highest charting album by far at #3, previously only getting as high as #36 and also crowning her as the definitive Madison of the album chart (Madison Avenue got to #4). Don't trust anyone who doesn't acknowledged the poorly timed streaming & radio peaks for "Make You Mine" when they mock it for never making the Hot 100, imagine paying dust to an absolute banger because of chart eccentricities. In a similar vein to RAYE, A$AP Rocky also meets his peak position for the 3rd time, as "AT.LONG.LAST.A$AP" and "TESTING" both peaked at #5. Rihanna's last album also peaked at #5 but it would be unfair to pretend that I'm not selling it short with that description. ENHYPEN score their first ever album chart entry with their latest EP that has a lot of tracks per minute. Robbie Williams arrives at a modest #22 while we wait for the physical versions to come through. An album whose physical versions did come through this week was Lizzy McAlpine's re-packaged "Older (and Wiser)" set, which means that after several near misses and hovering around below the chart for nearly 2 years at this point, she's finally gotten her first ever top 50 album. I'm starting to think "Staying" won't be the smash hit of 2026 but you've gotta hand it to a song that with little promotion is just casually getting about 700,000 streams a day on Spotify. A hit without the chart credentials. Sleaford Mods are helped by the new chart rules to score their highest ever peak, they'd only ever had one top 50 album before this. Lastly we have what I believe to be a serious muck up, as the latest album by Brisbane's DZ Deathrays enters at #44. For context, this is a band who usually debut in the top 10, and this week they have a big vinyl & catalogue re-entry for their previous album, "R.I.F.F.". I'm positive that ARIA have attributed all their vinyl sales to the wrong album. They probably should have made the top 30 if not top 20. Mind you, EsDeeKid's album has just been missing from both Australia and NZ's charts and nothing looks to be done about this. What's worse, a missing position or one that's just wrong? There's (dis)advantages to both.

Streaming Services Chart Discussion; W/C 23/01/26
If we wanna draw the comparison, "Sign of the Times" was a risky song for the streaming market at the time, and it showed. Never hit the top 5 on Spotify, only spent a week at #1. Its chart run was buoyed by sales. In reality, the song has been a massive streaming hit. Just recently crossed 2 billion on Spotify, his 3rd most. It's just that there are two separate streaming demographics. You've got the people who are tuned into the top 40 and those who aren't, and there's a different scope for what they're into, the latter group evidently love it (or it's very algorithm friendly to them), while it doesn't fit the taste of the former as much. At the end of the day, he's gotten his cake and eaten it because the song was a #1 hit, and it's gone triple platinum. The fact that it only spent 13 weeks in the top 75 no longer feels relevant. I don't know if this is the future "Aperture" is primed for (just listening to it now for the first time), but I reckon if he gets the #1 spot*, that's all that matters for now. (and I took too long to type it up, Joseph's said basically the same thing 😄) *might have something to say about this when I do my Aus charts post though, potential oof

I am once again reporting that nothing is getting close, and even though we saw some notable declines on Spotify yesterday, I'm going to pre-emptively declare that "Man I Need" probably has triple j's Hottest 100 on lock. At a bare minimum it's gonna be top 3 and its closest competition I don't think are troubling the pointy end of the ARIA Chart, so she's got another couple weeks of free equilibrium at this stage. Only a big new entry could stop her I think. Djo has climbed back to his original 2024 peak of #3, giving us the first change in the top 3 in over 3 months, though technically we haven't had a new top 3 hit since Taylor Swift's album dropped. I wouldn't put it past RAYE to have a strong Hottest 100 performance to get her over the line. Maybe not as strong a factor in that (not impossible though), we've got a fast rising Dave and "Raindance" reaching the top 10. It's his 3rd top 10 hit from 4 top 50 entries (the other one is "Clash") which are pretty good innings, while it's also Tems' first ever top 10 hit as "WAIT FOR U" peaked at #12. Arriving just behind Dave is Bruno Mars who might be considered the king of second week climbs. Before "Die With A Smile" and "APT.", he'd never had a top 10 debut in his career, which includes an unfortunate coincidence when "Uptown Funk" debuted at #11 on the same week streaming was added to the charts (it would have been top 10 otherwise). So he's still never done it as a lead artist and has been denied it once more, though in fairness I still must note that "Lush Life" should probably be in the top 10. Pretty good on the debut front though he's never done it in the top 10 either, Luke Combs notches up yet another top 20 hit, instantly matching the peak of his very big hit "Ain't No Love In Oklahoma", though it'll be a tough time matching it for longevity. Our first Australian top 50 entry of 2026 has arrived courtesy of Sonny Fodera, who might be priming to have the biggest Australian hit of 2026 given that he managed it last year with "Somedays" despite a pretty unremarkable chart run on the surface (it peaked at #26 and spent 6 weeks in the top 50). Maybe triple j's Hottest 100 could net us some more soon as Playlunch & Keli Holiday discourse gets a shot in the arm. At the very least I'll have a rant to make if my blog doesn't get to it first. Our discourse is so bad. Olivia Dean makes it 7 weeks at #1 on the album chart. She's entered the world of party spoiling as she blocks The Kid LAROI from the top spot. It is at least a slight improvement on his previous album's peak of #2, and I suppose I should note that he does have a #1 album via "F*CK LOVE", but then that's not a studio album is it? Cake and the eating of it situation right here. Less in contention, Zach Bryan arrives at #4, his 3rd album to make the top 5, though he's never had a #1. YUNGBLUD has been in the country lately and getting a lot of publicity I assume from people who haven't been keeping up with new music but might discovery that this is their guy. Last week Fred again.. had a big re-entry I couldn't really explain, and now that he's at #14 for a second week, I have to conclude that he's had a track list update on the database that's propelling his incidental streams through the roof. I'll confess I hadn't heard of Steph Strings until her debut album appeared on my new album release schedules, but that lack of publicity has not stopped her from entering the top 20. Dry Cleaning chart in the top 50 for the first time ever. The Last Dinner Party also re-enter thanks to their local tour, and Alter Bridge appear incredibly low down the chart given their last album hit the top 10. I am not 100% certain their physicals were all distributed properly otherwise that's just a colossal drop off.

Australian Chart Thread - 16/02/2026
I suspect I'm going to be living on moment-to-moment best guesses based on the newest information. It's possible that the 10 year layoff is optional and to be discarded if something's made the top 30, or alternatively, they're only counting that for subsequent re-entries in an 'everyone gets one' kinda way. Maybe it's all just meaningless and labels can do what they want, because otherwise I have to pretend it's consistent when "Lush Life" isn't charting. Might nearly be top 10. 12/01/2026 Singles 01 01 21 01 MAN I NEED Olivia Dean 02 02 14 01 THE FATE OF OPHELIA Taylor Swift 03 03 29 01 GOLDEN Rei Ami, KPop Demon Hunters Cast, Huntrx, Ejae, Audrey Nuna 04 14 54 03 END OF BEGINNING Djo 05 06 16 05 WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! Again, it really could have been one for the record books if it got into gear a little sooner. Still absolutely blitzing the competition, though not with the sort of remarkable/unsustainable figures that suggest a collapse is on the way. Djo is attempting to validate the re-entry with a new peak though he'll have to overcome the reliably stopping all close-comers "The Fate of Ophelia". At the very least, we'll finally have a different song in the top 3 for the first time in 14 weeks. Speaking of new songs, we got them. It's a further feather in the cap of my theory that no attention seems to get paid until something makes the top 20 sometimes. After months of being ignored from the chart, Dave's "Raindance" finally arrives. It's actually only his 4th ever top 50 entry but that includes a #1 hit and another top 10 so he tends to seize his moment when he has it. He should climb further next week. Katseye have the exciting honour of having the first 2026 song on the chart thanks to "Internet Girl", and just behind them is Ella Langley scoring her first top 50 hit, though "you look like you love me" has hung around for so long it may as well have been one. Olivia Dean also re-enters with "I've Seen It". Perhaps she'll end You Am I's reign of obscure stats as "Mr. Milk" is the only song to ever peak at #50 for 3 weeks (because the chart was frozen for 2 weeks). Again I have to report that if you were hoping taking out Christmas music would provide new chart hits, you're now down to just EsDeeKid's "Century" as the only song that charted because of the omissions. Well, in about a month we're gonna see some of those 2024 songs start to retire from the chart, maybe that'll do it. Olivia Dean has the #1 album for a 6th time. Our pattern of the top 3 singles & albums being identical is interrupted as #2 & #3 switch places. Of note this week, Ninajirachi & ROLE MODEL score new peaks, the former thanks to a vinyl release, and the latter just continuing the general momentum of the past 8 months. Djo re-enters the top 50 a little bit higher than he debuted, as does Sam Barber, while Tyla very belatedly makes her first entry here. Yes, that's her album that came out nearly 2 years ago, and it's so old that the deluxe version doesn't even have "CHANEL" on it. She's a beneficiary of the tremendously lowered bar for entry since she released it, so it's a bit of a fake new peak, but she's done it with a couple months left on the ticker. I believe Shaboozey & Lizzy McAlpine are also trying to do the same with their nearing 2 year old albums.

Depending on your perspective, this is either the most meaningless EOY list, or the last one that has even a semblance of meaning. Based on my scientific study of just looking at it and hashing out vibes, I would say that the expected result has happened. We've got an EOY chart that just adheres to each weekly chart as they were seen, so there are still old entries here, but they're missing the last third of their data and are slightly languishing for it. Only not too much because that would require there being ample new hits to take their place and we didn't really get that at the end of the year. It serves as a great reality check for the end of the year, especially on the album chart, where for instance, Laufey's #2 peaking album from 4-5 months ago that's generally stayed within the top 50 since release is unable to crack the list. If you're somehow able to compare the chart runs of "Kids" by MGMT in 2008 (which made the list) and "Gabriela" by KATSEYE (which did not), you might find it elucidating. The luck is transferred though. Look at The Marias, making it all the way up to #61 with their song that never cracked the top 50 (but would have if the rules were around sooner). We've also got a first ever appearance for Drake's "Take Care", which might not have made the list if the rules stayed in place. It will probably be remarked upon in the future that Taylor Swift has taken the top album spot easily for the 4th time in a row with 4 different albums. The way 2026 is going, she may need another new one to do it again. It is perhaps fitting that in this dying gasp of the old chart rules that we get an appearance from a Flo Rida album that doesn't even exist on streaming services and barely exists at all. At the very least, I may have to change up my formatting a little next year because I expect overlaps to be a little rarer. That's 2027 Dirca's problem though.

"Man I Need" is #1 for a 7th week. Not only is there no threat to this on the horizon, but we must consider the looming Hottest 100 which I suspect can only help Olivia Dean when it comes down to it. The race for #2 is at least interesting though. I expect Taylor Swift to retain it, but Olivia Dean's second entry is making headway, as is the surprise re-entry for Djo. ARIA's initial briefing of the new rules suggested this was only allowed if a song has gone 10 years without charting, but in our first possible chance to witness it, they've allowed a song that last appeared on the chart about 6 months ago. Ironically, The Police's "Every Breath You Take" which hasn't charted in 40 years and would very likely be in the top 30 is also missing, as is Dave's "Raindance" which has finally propelled itself into the top 50 except it hasn't. I also think The Killers might have reached a new peak for "Mr. Brightside" which would have made it the highest charting song on "Hot Fuss", but I guess they'll have to wait until 2036. If you're one of those people glad to (almost) not have any Christmas songs on the chart because they might be blocking other entries, you might have an actual leg to stand on! On the other hand, if you were looking for gaining top 50 hits that aren't an EsDeeKid single and an Olivia Dean album track, I'm sorry because they're the only songs that hit the top 50 because of it, and there's every chance they might re-enter later and take that away too. Kehlani scores the only new peak across both charts this week. Olivia Dean is also #1 on the album chart for a 5th week. I'd have more to say here if there were debuts by artists who don't have awful, awful names that preclude me from ever wanting to acknowledge them.

2026 Cricket Thread
I feel the same can be said of both of them, right from the first innings at Perth, Starc just immediately demoralises England from the first over, and almost singlehandedly gets them all out in half a day's play. Then in Brisbane, England could be looking a bit better but he gets another 6 wickets in the first innings (3 ducks on his own) and when the middle order for Australia starts to slide and make England look a chance, he pulls out a cheeky 77 run effort from 9th to sink the morale once more. I'll admit though I'm not sure how these things usually go, but do dead rubbers figure as strongly when thinking about this? I know for instance in the AFL Grand Final last year, there was a player who dominated in the last quarter (when the game was already decided) and only got 1 vote out of a possible 15 for best on ground. One of the voters later said on a podcast that they put more focus on performance when the game's in the balance.

Definitely on the podium but I reckon Starc did it all to wrap it up in the first two tests

Thing is that it was already climbing before that, and has maintained its momentum well over a week later. (Bamonte wasn't in the band until a decade after that song came out anyway)

2025 Australian Chart Thread
My assumption is that they're just going to take the data directly from the published charts, so every chart point counts until you're kicked off. Can't see them retroactively applying the rules to the earlier charts unless they already had it developed in-house all year.
