I reckon for an artist of her stature it's hard to make that push without a remix because the whole thing has already been pored over track by track. Single pushes months after album release can only do so much so probably makes sense to just stick with a track whose baseline performance is already solid because it's proven to be liked.

Once again we must ponder if we have solved music with a #9 & #10 switch being the only change in the top 10. It's very much in keeping with what we would have gotten last year if all the Christmas music was omitted, for now the gaps between these songs are too pronounced, and the movement too slight and uniform to change anything. It's possible the general weirdness of New Year's Eve could cause an impact. I'm seeing "No Broke Boys" & "Abracadabra" pretty high up on the first NYE Spotify playlist I found. As far as songs moving up this week, Tyla has jumped into the top 20 now with "CHANEL" and it's a big week for EsDeeKid with all of his songs vaulting, including his simultaneous second & third top 50 hits. In accordance with the new rules, we have just one Christmas song in the chart this week, Fall Out Boy scoring their first lead artist entry in over a decade with their Spotify exclusive. I believe Laufey's "Santa Baby" should also be in the top 50 but it's missing. Speaking of which, It's never been a top 50 threat before, but Dave's "Raindance" is seeing serious second wind at the moment, so if it continues to be left out of the chart now, it'll start to be genuinely noticeable. Olivia Dean also scores another top 50 hit for good measure. I didn't realise it but last week the Bubbling Under chart did a funny thing. If you look at it now you'll see that "So Easy (To Fall In Love)" is the highest new song at the moment, which feels odd doesn't it? You're right to think that, because ARIA have prematurely shafted "The Fate of Ophelia", because it would seem that someone put the wrong date into the database. For the time being it means she gets a revolving door of new entries at the bottom of her allowed ration for the New Music chart, but it also means that should the song stick around for its entire allowed tenure (see you all in late 2027), I suspect it's going to be removed from the chart several weeks early. Given the nature of Taylor Swift streaming cycles, it'll probably depend on if she has another particularly big album that puts "The Life Of A Showgirl" into the ever expanding past region of her discography, just one of the bygone albums. This comment doesn't work very well while "The Tortured Poets Department" climbs into the top 10 but I suspect that's on the back of Christmas sales and not streams. Olivia Dean gets a 4th week at #1 on the album chart. This week the entire top 10 are #1 peaking albums. There are no debuts this week so all we can do is speculate which albums got given out on Christmas. I suspect a lot of excited unwrapping of Cold Chisel and Geese occurred this year, I wonder how much overlap there is in that audience. I feel like Jimmy Barnes & Cameron Winter have a similar approach to singing. That also wraps up this year's charts. I will return to this thread in a week or so when the Year End charts come out, but until then, thanks for reading, I'll see you in the new thread.

Also think this is an example of the way ACR makes everything seem old hat quicker than it probably should. There are like 10-15 songs max in the Spotify top 200 older than the Taylor Swift album. Let's put 95% of the chart on ACR and watch as it starts to look a lot like a chart without ACR
  4. It's best to temper expectation with in memorium climbs during Christmas, even if they're Christmas related. We're dealing with monumentally higher numbers than any other time of year and it's very difficult to disrupt the pre-established pecking order through deliberate searches. Even a very large 100K increase is going to look underwhelming when the top song is doing a million a day.

We'd be looking at a heck of a run at the top if it didn't spent 2 months getting blocked. In any case, the Spotify Wrapped effect is done, so now we can all enjoy an exciting chart with all that interesting movement that Christmas was robbing from us. Oh. Olivia Dean is #1 for a 3rd week. There's a bit more action here courtesy of a Pink Floyd re-issue, rest in piece to the burning man on the album cover. Boy & Bear also return with their latest album. I got an email from them asking to help them get a #1 album. If you count the Australian artist chart, then they did it! Unfortunately because of these two albums, 21 Savage's plead to Mike Skinner only enters at #23. Then we've got Jim Moginie entering at #26 for his first ever solo entry. He's the guitarist from Midnight Oil. Speaking of solo projects, sneaking in is Slowly Slowly's lead singer Benjamin Stewart.

It's a well that I seem to tap every six months. I wouldn't entirely call it proof because it's just a smaller specific subset of listeners, and the greater picture can reveal unusual results, but I am inclined to think last fm users are more active and on the pulse listeners than average (as well as receiving less new users per capita than streaming services), so the whole story would probably be one of less repeat plays, and more delayed discovery, to amplify the point. I suspect that there is maybe enough data given by Spotify in its daily play counts and monthly listener stats to discover some interesting info (eg. the different monthly listeners spike a new Taylor Swift album generates for her and the lucky artists who get to be featured on it), but I'm probably not the one to do it. 😄 For an update a year and a half later, "Mr. Brightside" is up to 13.5 scrobbles per listener (up from 12), while "BIRDS OF A FEATHER" is up to 25 scrobbles per listener (up from 15). Also roughly a third of listeners to the Billie track only first recorded it in the past year. I wish I could say what it is for The Killers but the Wayback Machine is down as I'm writing this. Let's pick some new song ratios to look at! 21 - Taylor Swift - The Fate of Ophelia 17 - KATSEYE - Gabriela 16 - sombr - back to friends 10 - Alex Warren - Ordinary 10 - Alex Warren - Eternity 10 - EsDeeKid - Century 10 - sombr - 12 to 12 9 - RAYE - WHERE IS MY HUSBAND! 8 - Olivia Dean - Man I Need 8 - Tyla - CHANEL 7.5 - Dave - Raindance 7 - Olivia Dean - So Easy (To Fall In Love) Not sure it correlates to much of anything! "Mood" by 24kGoldn is also just languishing ahead of the peloton at 10.5, a smash hit from 5 years ago!

I think in all seriousness if you want to talk about a paradigm shift through playlists for Christmas music, is there really an 'organic' way for it to happen? We're all talking about arbitrary (to us) songs benefitting over the original favourites. How did those songs get there in the first place? Probably radio stations decided to play them. For all we know, the current state of affairs should've always been what it was like but those older songs weren't given the proper chance. Now it's been going so long that there are young listeners who've only known the Bobby Helms revival era, and so forth. I agree there should be better regulations for local content quotas on playlists, but I don't think we can safely say these songs aren't genuinely popular just because they didn't have the correct rite of passage. I didn't know "Feliz Navidad" when I was a kid. I know it now, think it's great and will willingly listen to it. I'm sure there are many such cases. Just having a bit of fun! Christmas discourse in both senses of that phrase can get oddly heated lmao.

Can't believe the Australification of the charts. Kylie Minogue at #1, "Snowman" becoming an annual top 40 staple. Before you know it, all the disappointed cricket fans are gonna fly back after a month in Australia and start celebrating Gravy Day on the 21st of December next year😔

Haven't been able to watch as much as the first two tests (day games are not made for WA night owls 😅) but England looked a lot more threatening in this one. That missed catch on 99 for Head is a huge what-if that could've completely changed momentum. Also was thinking back to 2005 and thought they might be able to hold out and squeeze for a draw.

So under the radar that his label still haven't gotten around to putting in on the ARIA survey, so it's still not charting in Australia.

There's absolutely no competition so you can lock it in for next week as well. That would perhaps be considered the Christmas chart and in case you're wondering, "Man I Need" would certainly be #1 no matter what. Mariah Carey usually (though not always) climbed to #1 the week after, and I suspect if allowed on the chart, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" would be fighting a close battle for #2, and probably losing it. I was alerted to an curiosity that the top 3 singles & albums are the same artists in the same order, which might not have ever happened before. Otherwise, we're looking at the Spotify Wrapped chart this week, discovering what songs everyone listened to in January and February, and then forgot about. Only we've been reading these charts since at least that far back, so we already know what everyone was listening to then. "That's So True", "The Days - NOTION Remix" and "APT." are among the greatest gainers this week. Kendrick Lamar & Lady Gaga are also probably benefitting from this, but they've also been in Australia in this time frame so that's the other big thing. An amusing side effect of this is that "The Dead Dance" has finally reached the New Music chart for the first time, despite previously reaching the ARIA top 50 on release. The only new peak this week is for Tyla's "CHANEL", as most new songs are having a rough week. If you want my rough estimate, I think there should be about 6-7 Christmas songs in the top 50 this week. Ayy he said the thing, but genuinely that's what I think. I've already told you what happened on the album chart, but I will say that Olivia Dean has returned to #1 for the first time since debuting there. Potentially she's setting a pecking order with streaming though I suspect Taylor Swift's pure sales might contest her for a while yet. The two albums have 8 and 3 songs respectively in the Spotify top 200, but 7 and 12 songs respectively in the Apple Music top 200. Kylie Minogue's expanded Christmas album debuts at #4. The original version was a perennial re-charter that peaked at #7. Olivia Rodrigo keeps her charting discography covered in 1's, as she adds two more of them with her Glastonbury set. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds had a #47 charting live album back in 1993, and now they've gotten just a bit higher with another one at #22. Pepperidge Farm remembers when Alison Wonderland was more popular than Ninajirachi. Now she's got a guest spot on the new Alison Wonderland album, but it ends up debuting lower than "I Love My Computer" is this week.

I'll be honest, I don't even know if Amazon is a big wheel for the charts over here. It's not something I've ever felt the need to keep track of. Everything can always be largely explained through Spotify, Apple & YouTube. If such a radical force does exist, we won't see it until the last Christmas chart, because as it stands, there'd probably be only 6 or maybe 7 Christmas songs in the ARIA top 50 under normal circumstances this week. Takes a while to kick into gear.

Can I interest you in 0 debuts and 4 re-entries, where the newest one has spent roughly as many weeks in the top 50 than all 4 of the songs that dropped out combined? The demon of Christmas is no longer keeping us from what we all really want.

Don't expect that to change this year. It's abundantly clear that there will be no Christmas shenanigans on this watch, unless some new blood comes along, but it probably won't contend for the top spot. Our no Christmas policy has brought in that chart salvation that everyone has wanted I believe, 3 re-entries from 3 of the oldest possible hits that are still able to appear on the chart. Well we do also get Tyla getting a 3rd ever top 50 hit. We've missed out on the funny run of 08-out-out-09 with the return of "I Run" being marked as a new entry, but we get some other comedy as it seems like the "Golden" state of just chucking all the names in reverse alphabetical order has been enacted again. Congrats Kaitlyn Aragon on the lead artist hit.

Enjoying this match. England absolutely will be kicking themselves with all the missed opportunities. Makes me feel less certain of the result even if Australia are definitely in control for now.

To play devil's advocate, is the notion of songs getting sabotaged by Christmas even really true? I think we get a little side-tracked by the positions and don't look at the numbers, which I can bet is what the labels are doing. I see a pretty meagre dip that pales in comparison to what comes after in January when less people are listening to music anyway, if anything that's the thing that would be more pressing (I'm using this example because it's late enough in the year that I don't think Spotify Wrapped or any associated end of year festivities would be propelling this song, which might push it down some chart positions, but won't necessarily take many streams away from it) If there is a problem, it's not with Christmas, but just the end of the year, because I think we'd like to stop and smell the roses for a while and not perpetually feel obligated to cycle our music playlists 52 weeks a year for eternity. I love that things calm down a bit in December, and it lets me look back on the year that was, which again is more statistical noise that makes it feel like nothing's happening than Christmas. I welcome everyone to check out the ARIA Charts in a few weeks time where (I believe) there will be no Wham!, no Mariah, (maybe Laufey instead?), and look at how all the movement will be not just stagnant, but actively negative because all the kinda old songs will temporarily leap ahead of the newer ones. But then I guess I don't know what the general aim is. Do we want chart movement just cuz? Do we want to hear new music we like, except we're not content with it unless everyone else is also listening to it? Or is it just this petty annoyance that these weird exception cases that shouldn't count are ruining all kinds of interesting chart records without even trying? It sounds all well and good to want chart movement, but as someone whose interest in charts is predicated on letting accurate data do its thing (it's why we care more about the Official Chart than any 'fake' charts, right?), I find it hard to join the chart movement, movement.

Probably on the way down now, but so is everything else, so it's a wide chasm. Of most note this week is the massive arrival of Stray Kids, who score their first top 50 hit in style. The big physical sales they're known for are utilised with their "Do It" EP and send it soaring into the top 10. I don't think it'll last long, but Stray Kids have had a habit of maintaining better than you'd expect on the album chart, so anyone's guess where they are next week. Tate McRae also deluxes her way all over the chart, though you'd be forgiven for not noticing it on the album chart. EsDeeKid also scores his first ever top 50 hit in Australia, "Phantom" leading a growing pack of entries for him. The Wicked: For Good soundtrack hits #1. I don't even need to tell you how the first one went because there it is on the chart still, it peaked at #3. If the name didn't tip you off, SoSo, call themselves an 'aggressively average' pop punk band, possibly going for the Lewis Capaldi marketing. To a non-hellish extent, it's worked as they arrive in the top 5. Eventual main characters of my blog (they'll pop up like 5 or 6 times), The Smith Street Band score their 9th top 50 album this week. I didn't mention before but Stray Kids are partially Australian, and the same is true of Midnight Til Morning, who enter for the first time this week.

You'll have to forgive me, I'm not sure what you're talking about here? Is it just a matter of the occasional unexplained reset, or is there more?
  20. Dircadirca posted a post in a topic in UK Charts
I'd say it 'works' if the purpose is to give emerging hits a leg up, turning an otherwise #110 hit into a #40 hit and so on. Quirky edge cases don't necessarily stop the bigger picture. Maybe though it creates a chart environment where we might feel compelled to say so-and-so is overdue ACR, unwittingly creating villains of the chart. Not a big fan of the implementation (would be nice to have some clarity on the OCC website about what is/isn't on ACR on a given week, dropouts too, why not?)*, but I do think it does what it sets out to do. *Obviously do appreciate this as a resource when the chart gets posted here

Also, "Man I Need" has climbed to #1 some 2 months after first hitting #2. This is probably pretty expected at this point. I want to highlight the other quirk on the opposite end of the chart. The combination of Olivia Dean being in the country and being the zeitgeist, as well as Sam Fender being in the country, and we have to acknowledge the disappearance of one track of note from DSPs a week ago means that "Rein Me In" is able to sneak into the top 50. The sheer amount of things needed in its favour just shows how foreign the concept of Sam Fender having a top 50 single in Australia is. I am reminded of another UK act whose 2nd album houses their most famous hit which was unlucky not to reach the top 50, and then their 3rd album getting a very late top 50 hit. Yes, Sam Fender is the new Kaiser Chiefs. 5 Seconds Of Summer score their 6th #1 album, it's just what they do. They get in ahead of a re-issue from Jimmy Barnes, the album that has his most famous solo song on it, Australia's unofficial national anthem "Working Class Man". The ARIA Awards happened last week, though you won't see much happening on the charts from it because it's not nearly as publicised as it once was, and also it happens on a Wednesday night. Something to take away from it is that You Am I were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, now there's a fantastic band. They were the first Australian band to have 3 consecutive #1 debuts on the album chart. You might have heard of them if you've ever looked at the Wikipedia article for "Cathy's Clown" where it asks you if you might possibly have been looking for the You Am I song of the same name. Some 20 odd years ago, they released a compilation called the Cream & The Crock, and now they've expanded it with The Dollop & The Wallop. It includes some of their newer singles and a couple of older ones that weren't on the original collection. Check them out if you get the chance, I envy the possibility to listen to "Berlin Chair" for the first time ever.
  22. It does seem like in the pursuit of information, there's a game of telephone where any valid information gets mixed in with bad faith interpretations that exaggerate the truth because somewhere in the chain is someone who wants it to be true. In this case, not because they like the idea of an AI record, but the opposite, and so they want to smear every facet of the two together to associate a record they don't like with an unpopular buzz word. I always see people saying things that aren't true to justify disliking someone (because there aren't enough true reasons I guess?) and it's hard to tell if they know it's false or not. It's a big credibility blow to anyone I see parroting this stuff without regard. Similarly, I thought the very rapid rise around the world was unusual, but it didn't feel suspect to me. The climbs were always pretty uniform across different countries in a manner that's difficult to fake. I don't claim to know how the TikTok machine spins its wheels and how an unknown producer can make it there, but that kind of virality has existed since the early days of YouTube and before that. Things can spread very quickly, and this song's hook got stuck in my head very quickly too. Not a fan of deep fake voice impersonation filters if that's what it is, but maybe this can all be a blueprint for the way this is all treated in the future. It's very annoying to have to consider that someone can have a social media page and only be sure they're a real person because their posts date back to more than a year ago. It's the sheer 'name is mud' aspect that makes me think AI is gonna have a hard time getting past the 'tricking people into listening to it' angle after the current novelty has passed. I await the bubble burst.

This is feeling even more incredulous than last week, so unless you believe in the magic wizardry of the select few seemingly being always able to pull the necessary sales out of their pockets and testing the limits of plausible deniability...this surely has to be the last week. Olivia Dean is probably in Australia right now because she's going to be at the ARIA Awards tomorrow and doing a single show in Sydney on Thursday. She's asserted the role of the artist who is taking up all of the precious Fleetwood Mac & Teddy Swims real estate as she's now got 8 songs in the Spotify top 50, just gains across the board. No need to jump the gun though, because she's taken it slowly enough to secure the chart classic with a full run of 07s for "So Easy (To Fall In Love)". It was very early in my chart watching life that I witnessed Mumford & Sons and "Little Lion Man" land the incredulous 16 16 16 16, and I've been starved for something of that scale ever since, even with streaming providing a new avenue for these kinds of slow crawls, it just hasn't been matched. The other thing I should probably address is Haven. It was the first game released by The Game Bakers after the breakout success of Furi, which as many would know is the video game that I hold dozens and dozens of speedrunning world records in...oh wait this should say HAVEN.. You're probably familiar with the story, but for future scholars, let it be known that you are all very handsome and loved for your tireless efforts, and also let it be known that "I Run" vaulted up to a cosy #3 on the Spotify chart by the end of last week. No one yet knows how far it could have gone, because 2 days later it stopped being available to stream and looks likely to join luminaries like Francesca's "Way of the World", Nirvana's "About A Girl (Acoustic)", and triple j's "Christmas Number 1" as singles that have debuted in the top 10 and disappeared from the top 50 the week after. There is one note that I just want to add to this whole story: If you, like me, are an enjoyer of perusing the internet, potentially gathering information that you trust to be correct, you've got to return the favour. Don't go around presenting unsubstantiated information just because you heard it from someone else, or worse, you want it to be true to propel your point of view, so you delude yourself and others into believing it. I've heard no shortage of discussion around this HAVEN. track, about how it's Al generated. This could mean many different things. Sometimes it's just a vocal filter being used, when it's not specified it tends to imply the whole thing was generated from scratch, and I've even seen suggestion that HAVEN. himself does not exist. I'm not here to make a statement on what the truth is, because I don't know! Perhaps it'll come to light in the wash, but presenting vague telephoned statements provides nothing but noise surrounding the truth. It's why 13 years ago after a final inquest ruled her not guilty, you'll still find people who think that Lindy Chamberlain was involved in foul play back in 1980 when she said a dingo ate her baby. The reason I say this, is that if you truly despise the thought of a future world of Al music, don't give it power. There's too much performative over-reaction to what it's doing so far (I guess because clicks), but this is playing entirely into the Al tech bro's hand. What better coup than to prove that they were able to slip into instant virality and score a monster hit, only banished on a technicality. Consider the implication of your words, and don't make people waste time correcting you, fruitless to the impact they've already had, like a Community Note or appended tweet a day later. The damage is already done, and it'll only diminish your own credibility. Taylor Swift is #1 for a 6th week on the album chart. I think she's primed to be upended because the streaming margins are starting to get challenged by KPop Demon Hunters and Olivia Dean, and failing that, I think 5 Seconds Of Summer have historically been very good at scoring #1 albums. It hadn't even crossed my mind until I saw how far ahead they were in the UK midweeks and I figure Australia still has some love. On the other hand, if the Taylor Swift campaign couldn't move aside for an Australian legend like Paul Kelly, then maybe the same thing will happen next week. I should always note that despite being a pretty notable figure since the 1980s, Paul Kelly didn't get his first #1 album until the late 2010s, and he notched up 3 in quick succession. I've made a shocking revelation this week that enough people are invested in the sombr experience to buy vinyl and send the album back into the top 5. Also making a big splash this week is Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Their debut album landed in the top 10 a couple of years ago and netted them a Best New Artist ARIA Award. I'll likely have some good words to say about them on my blog at some point in the next 46 weeks. Rosalía makes the top 50 for the first time ever and leaves plenty of space on the tarmac. A big name in the early '90s, James Blundell once had a #2 single in Australia. He's now charting for the first time since 1995, living up to the album title. West Australian icon Stella Donnelly returns with her 3rd album and 3rd to make the top 50. Cosmic Psychos have released a few more albums than that but are also charting for the 3rd time. They had a beer coloured vinyl variant for this one.
